We describe a Deep-Geometric Localizer that is able to estimate the full 6 Degree of Freedom (DoF) global pose of the camera from a single image in a previously mapped environment. Our map is a topo-metric one, with discrete topological nodes whose 6 DoF poses are known. Each topo-node in our map also comprises of a set of points, whose 2D features and 3D locations are stored as part of the mapping process. For the mapping phase, we utilise a stereo camera and a regular stereo visual SLAM pipeline. During the localization phase, we take a single camera image, localize it to a topological node using Deep Learning, and use a geometric algorithm (PnP) on the matched 2D features (and their 3D positions in the topo map) to determine the full 6 DoF globally consistent pose of the camera. Our method divorces the mapping and the localization algorithms and sensors (stereo and mono), and allows accurate 6 DoF pose estimation in a previously mapped environment using a single camera. With potential VR/AR and localization applications in single camera devices such as mobile phones and drones, our hybrid algorithm compares favourably with the fully Deep-Learning based Pose-Net that regresses pose from a single image in simulated as well as real environments.
We present an accurate and robust method for six degree of freedom image localization. There are two key-points of our method, 1. automatic immense photo synthesis and labeling from point cloud model and, 2. pose estimation with deep convolutional neural networks regression. Our model can directly regresses 6-DOF camera poses from images, accurately describing where and how it was captured. We achieved an accuracy within 1 meters and 1 degree on our out-door dataset, which covers about 2 acres on our school campus.

We propose a novel visual localization network when outside environment has changed such as different illumination, weather and season. The visual localization network is composed of a feature extraction network and pose regression network. The feature extraction network is made up of an encoder network based on the Generative Adversarial Network CycleGAN, which can capture intrinsic appearance-invariant feature maps from unpaired samples of different weathers and seasons. With such an invariant feature, we use a 6-DoF pose regression network to tackle long-term visual localization in the pres…

Machine learning techniques, namely convolutional neural networks (CNN) and regression forests, have recently shown great promise in performing 6-DoF localization of monocular images. However, in most cases image-sequences, rather only single images, are readily available. To this extent, none of the proposed learning-based approaches exploit the valuable constraint of temporal smoothness, often leading to situations where the per-frame error is larger than the camera motion. In this paper we propose a recurrent model for performing 6-DoF localization of video-clips. We find that, even by cons…
This technical report introduces CyberLoc, an image-based visual localization pipeline for robust and accurate long-term pose estimation under challenging conditions. The proposed method comprises four modules connected in a sequence. First, a mapping module is applied to build accurate 3D maps of the scene, one map for each reference sequence if there exist multiple reference sequences under different conditions. Second, a single-image-based localization pipeline (retrieval--matching--PnP) is performed to estimate 6-DoF camera poses for each query image, one for each 3D map. Third, a consensu…
Although a wide variety of deep neural networks for robust Visual Odometry (VO) can be found in the literature, they are still unable to solve the drift problem in long-term robot navigation. Thus, this paper aims to propose novel deep end-to-end networks for long-term 6-DoF VO task. It mainly fuses relative and global networks based on Recurrent Convolutional Neural Networks (RCNNs) to improve the monocular localization accuracy. Indeed, the relative sub-networks are implemented to smooth the VO trajectory, while global subnetworks are designed to avoid drift problem. All the parameters are j…

We propose a novel concept to directly match feature descriptors extracted from RGB images, with feature descriptors extracted from 3D point clouds. We use this concept to localize the position and orientation (pose) of the camera of a query image in dense point clouds. We generate a dataset of matching 2D and 3D descriptors, and use it to train a proposed Descriptor-Matcher algorithm. To localize a query image in a point cloud, we extract 2D keypoints and descriptors from the query image. Then the Descriptor-Matcher is used to find the corresponding pairs 2D and 3D keypoints by matching the 2…

We address the problem of ground-to-satellite image geo-localization, that is, estimating the camera latitude, longitude and orientation (azimuth angle) by matching a query image captured at the ground level against a large-scale database with geotagged satellite images. Our prior arts treat the above task as pure image retrieval by selecting the most similar satellite reference image matching the ground-level query image. However, such an approach often produces coarse location estimates because the geotag of the retrieved satellite image only corresponds to the image center while the ground …

We describe a light-weight, weather and lighting invariant, Semantic Bird's Eye View (S-BEV) signature for vision-based vehicle re-localization. A topological map of S-BEV signatures is created during the first traversal of the route, which are used for coarse localization in subsequent route traversal. A fine-grained localizer is then trained to output the global 3-DoF pose of the vehicle using its S-BEV and its coarse localization. We conduct experiments on vKITTI2 virtual dataset and show the potential of the S-BEV to be robust to weather and lighting. We also demonstrate results with 2 veh…
We present a real-time approach for image-based localization within large scenes that have been reconstructed offline using structure from motion (Sfm). From monocular video, our method continuously computes a precise 6-DOF camera pose, by efficiently tracking natural features and matching them to 3D points in the Sfm point cloud. Our main contribution lies in efficiently interleaving a fast keypoint tracker that uses inexpensive binary feature descriptors with a new approach for direct 2D-to-3D matching. The 2D-to-3D matching avoids the need for online extraction of scale-invariant features. …

Visual localization has become a key enabling component of many place recognition and SLAM systems. Contemporary research has primarily focused on improving accuracy and precision-recall type metrics, with relatively little attention paid to a system's absolute storage scaling characteristics, its flexibility to adapt to available computational resources, and its longevity with respect to easily incorporating newly learned or hand-crafted image descriptors. Most significantly, improvement in one of these aspects typically comes at the cost of others: for example, a snapshot-based system that a…
We tackle the problem of getting a full 6-DOF pose estimation of a query image inside a given point cloud. This technical report re-evaluates the algorithms proposed by Y. Li et al. "Worldwide Pose Estimation using 3D Point Cloud". Our code computes poses from 3 or 4 points, with both known and unknown focal length. The results can easily be displayed and analyzed with Meshlab. We found both advantages and shortcomings of the methods proposed. Furthermore, additional priors and parameters for point selection, RANSAC and pose quality estimate (inlier test) are proposed and applied.

Augmented reality devices require multiple sensors to perform various tasks such as localization and tracking. Currently, popular cameras are mostly frame-based (e.g. RGB and Depth) which impose a high data bandwidth and power usage. With the necessity for low power and more responsive augmented reality systems, using solely frame-based sensors imposes limits to the various algorithms that needs high frequency data from the environement. As such, event-based sensors have become increasingly popular due to their low power, bandwidth and latency, as well as their very high frequency data acquisi…

Advanced visual localization techniques encompass image retrieval challenges and 6 Degree-of-Freedom (DoF) camera pose estimation, such as hierarchical localization. Thus, they must extract global and local features from input images. Previous methods have achieved this through resource-intensive or accuracy-reducing means, such as combinatorial pipelines or multi-task distillation. In this study, we present a novel method called SuperGF, which effectively unifies local and global features for visual localization, leading to a higher trade-off between localization accuracy and computational ef…
Image-based localization is a core component of many augmented/mixed reality (AR/MR) and autonomous robotic systems. Current localization systems rely on the persistent storage of 3D point clouds of the scene to enable camera pose estimation, but such data reveals potentially sensitive scene information. This gives rise to significant privacy risks, especially as for many applications 3D mapping is a background process that the user might not be fully aware of. We pose the following question: How can we avoid disclosing confidential information about the captured 3D scene, and yet allow reliab…
We propose a novel keypoint voting scheme based on intersecting spheres, that is more accurate than existing schemes and allows for fewer, more disperse keypoints. The scheme is based upon the distance between points, which as a 1D quantity can be regressed more accurately than the 2D and 3D vector and offset quantities regressed in previous work, yielding more accurate keypoint localization. The scheme forms the basis of the proposed RCVPose method for 6 DoF pose estimation of 3D objects in RGB-D data, which is particularly effective at handling occlusions. A CNN is trained to estimate the di…

Camera geo-localization from a monocular video is a fundamental task for video analysis and autonomous navigation. Although 3D reconstruction is a key technique to obtain camera poses, monocular 3D reconstruction in a large environment tends to result in the accumulation of errors in rotation, translation, and especially in scale: a problem known as scale drift. To overcome these errors, we propose a novel framework that integrates incremental structure from motion (SfM) and a scale drift correction method utilizing geo-tagged images, such as those provided by Google Street View. Our correctio…

This paper studies the task of any objects grasping from the known categories by free-form language instructions. This task demands the technique in computer vision, natural language processing, and robotics. We bring these disciplines together on this open challenge, which is essential to human-robot interaction. Critically, the key challenge lies in inferring the category of objects from linguistic instructions and accurately estimating the 6-DoF information of unseen objects from the known classes. In contrast, previous works focus on inferring the pose of object candidates at the instance …
Visual (re)localization addresses the problem of estimating the 6-DoF (Degree of Freedom) camera pose of a query image captured in a known scene, which is a key building block of many computer vision and robotics applications. Recent advances in structure-based localization solve this problem by memorizing the mapping from image pixels to scene coordinates with neural networks to build 2D-3D correspondences for camera pose optimization. However, such memorization requires training by amounts of posed images in each scene, which is heavy and inefficient. On the contrary, few-shot images are usu…
Visual localization is one of the most important components for robotics and autonomous driving. Recently, inspiring results have been shown with CNN-based methods which provide a direct formulation to end-to-end regress 6-DoF absolute pose. Additional information like geometric or semantic constraints is generally introduced to improve performance. Especially, the latter can aggregate high-level semantic information into localization task, but it usually requires enormous manual annotations. To this end, we propose a novel auxiliary learning strategy for camera localization by introducing sce…

In this paper, we introduce an approach to tracking the pose of a monocular camera in a prior surfel map. By rendering vertex and normal maps from the prior surfel map, the global planar information for the sparse tracked points in the image frame is obtained. The tracked points with and without the global planar information involve both global and local constraints of frames to the system. Our approach formulates all constraints in the form of direct photometric errors within a local window of the frames. The final optimization utilizes these constraints to provide the accurate estimation of …

In complex environments, low-cost and robust localization is a challenging problem. For example, in a GPSdenied environment, LiDAR can provide accurate position information, but the cost is high. In general, visual SLAM based localization methods become unreliable when the sunlight changes greatly. Therefore, inexpensive and reliable methods are required. In this paper, we propose a stereo visual localization method based on the prior LiDAR map. Different from the conventional visual localization system, we design a novel visual optimization model by matching planar information between the LiD…

Our implementation of DOF is memory-efficient, data-efficient, and computationally cheap so that it can be computed in real-time for use in an MPC framework. The suggested Pix…
Compared to LiDAR-based localization methods, which provide high accuracy but rely on expensive sensors, visual localization approaches only require a camera and thus are more cost-effective while their accuracy and reliability typically is inferior to LiDAR-based methods. The approach consists of two deep networks trained on visual odometry an…
