We discuss the current status of lepton flavour universality observables in semileptonic charged and neutral current $B$ meson decays. We recapitulate the current experimental situation. Assuming the current tensions with the SM are of beyond the Standard Model origin we present their implications for the effective theory couplings. Then we discuss general leptoquark models before finally focussing on the model with two scalar leptoquarks ($R_2$ and $S_3$) which have couplings connected by the underlying Grand Unified Theory framework. We present the viability of the model with regard to lepton flavour universality and present opportunities to search for this model in future high-intensity and high-energy experiments
We study the flavor universality of the lepton couplings with the W and Z bosons. Currently, it is constrained by the electroweak precision observables. We focus on the leptonic decay of the pion. It is shown that the decay is expected to have a comparable or better sensitivity to the lepton-flavor universality in the near future. Furthermore, it provides a complementary information in determining the Wlnu couplings without assuming new physics models. This result is applied to a model of the extra lepton.
The Standard Model requires the three known leptonic families to have identical couplings to the gauge bosons. The present experimental tests on lepton universality are reviewed, both for the charged and neutral current sectors. Our knowledge about the Lorentz structure of the $l^-\toν_l l'^-\barν_{l'}$ transition amplitudes is also discussed.
The supersymmetric one-loop contribution to the quark-lepton universality violation in the low-energy charged current weak interactions is studied. It is shown that the recent experimental data with the 1-$σ$ deviation from the universality may be explained by the existence of the light sleptons ($<220$GeV) and relatively light chargino and neutralinos ($<600$GeV) with significant gaugino components. The sign of the universality violation is briefly discussed.
We show that the observed anomalies in the lepton sector can be explained in extensions of the Standard Model that are natural and, therefore, resolve the Higgs sector hierarchy problem. The scale of new physics is around the TeV and Technicolor-like theories are ideal candidate models.
In this paper, we consider the Standard Model (SM) with one family of vector-like (VL) leptons, which couple to all three families of the SM leptons. We study the constraints on this model coming from the heavy charged lepton mass bound, electroweak precision data, the muon anomalous magnetic moment, lepton flavor violation, Higgs decay constraints and a recently measured lepton non-universality observable, $R_{K^{*0}}$. We find that the strongest constraints are coming from the muon $g-2, \ R_{μμ}=Γ(h\toμμ)/Γ(h\toμμ)_\text{SM}, \ R_{γγ}$ and $\text{BR}(μ\to eγ)$. Although VL leptons couple to…
We analyse the violations of lepton-flavour universality in the ratios B(P -> l nu)/B(P -> l' nu) using a general effective theory approach, discussing various flavour-symmetry breaking patterns of physics beyond the SM. We find that in models with Minimal Lepton Flavour Violation the effects are too small to be observed in the next generations of experiments in all relevant meson systems (P = Pi, K, B). In a Grand Unified framework with a minimal breaking of the flavour symmetry, the effects remain small in Pi and K decays while large violations of lepton-flavour universality are possible in …
Motivated by the prospects for an improved test of lepton universality in K -> l νdecays by the NA62 experiment at CERN, we study predictions for the possible lepton non-universality in K -> l νdecays in supersymmetric models. Violations of μ-e universality in this process may originate from mixing effects in the right-handed slepton sector, providing a unique window into this aspect of supersymmetric flavour physics in the large-\tanβregion. Minimal unification scenarios with universal soft supersymmetry-breaking terms at the GUT scale would predict negligible violation of lepton universality…
We present a proposal for detecting new physics at a B-factory running at the $Υ(3S)$ resonance by testing lepton universality to the few percent level in the leptonic decays of the $Υ(1S)$ and $Υ(2S)$ resonances tagged by the dipion in the chain decay: $Υ(3S) \to pi^+π^-Υ(1S,2S)$; $Υ(1S,2S) \to \ell^+\ell^-$, $\ell=e,μ,τ$.
In high energy exclusive processes involving leptons, QED corrections can be sensitive to infrared scales like the lepton mass and the soft photon energy cut, resulting in large logarithms that need to be resummed to all order in $α$. When considering the ratio of the exclusive processes between two different lepton flavors, the ratio $R$ can be expressed in terms of factorized functions in the decoupled leptonic sectors. While some of the functional terms cancel, there remain the large logarithms due to the lepton mass difference and the energy cut. This factorization process can be universal…
We investigate whether the $2.6σ$ deviation from lepton flavour universality in $B^+\to K^+\ell^+\ell^-$ decays recently observed at the LHCb experiment can be explained in minimal composite Higgs models. We show that a visible departure from universality is indeed possible if left-handed muons have a sizable degree of compositeness. Constraints from $Z$-pole observables are avoided by a custodial protection of the muon coupling. The deficit in the invisible $Z$ width at LEP is explained in the same region of parameters.
Lepton Flavor Universality Violation (LFUV) in $b\rightarrow s l^+ l^-$ processes is investigated in the context of a 331 model. It is shown that in order to explain the experimentally observed deviations from the Standard Model in these FCNC transitions, a non-minimal version of the model has to be considered. We investigate the ability of this model in accomodating the model-independant scenarios currently favored by global fits.
We suggest the use of a universality-breaking observable based on lepton asymmetries as derived from the left-right asymmetry and the $τ$ polarization at the $Z$ peak, which can efficiently constrain the parameter space of unified theories. The new observable is complementary to the leptonic partial width differences and it depends critically on the chirality of a possible non-universal $Z$-boson coupling to like-flavour leptons. The LEP/SLC potential of probing universality violation is discussed in representative low-energy extensions of the Standard Model (SM) that could be derived by super…
A properly defined and suitably broken $U(2)$ flavour symmetry leads to successful quantitative relations between quark mass ratios and CKM angles. At the same time the intrinsic distinction introduced by $U(2)$ between the third and the first two families of quarks and leptons may support anomalies in charged and neutral current semi-leptonic $B$-decays of the kind tentatively observed in current flavour experiments. We show how this is possible by the exchange of the $(3,1)_{2/3}$ vector leptoquark in two $U(2)$-models with significantly different values of Lepton Flavour Universality violat…
High precision electroweak tests, such as deviations from the Standard Model expectations of the Lepton Flavor Universality breaking in K->lnu (with l= e or mu), represent a powerful tool to test the Standard Model and, hence, to constrain or obtain indirect hints of New Physics beyond it. We explore such a possibility within Supersymmetric theories. Interestingly enough, a process that in itself does not need lepton flavor violation to occur, i.e. the violation of mu-e non-universality in K_l2, proves to be quite effective in constraining not only relevant regions of SUSY models where lepton …
We analyze the one loop corrections to leptonic W and Z decays in an R-parity violating extension to the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). We find that lepton universality violation in the Z line-shape variables alone would strengthen the bounds on the magnitudes of the lambda' couplings, but a global fit on all data leaves the bounds virtually unchanged at |lambda'_{33k}| < 0.42 and |lambda'_{23k}| < 0.50 at the 2 sigma level. Bounds from W decays are less stringent: |lambda'_{33k}| < 2.4 at 2 sigma, as a consequence of the weaker Fermilab experimental bounds on lepton universalit…
We study a model with partial quark-lepton universality that can naturally arise in grand unified theories. We find that constraints on the model can be reduced to a single condition on the Dirac CP phase $δ$ in the neutrino sector. Using our current knowledge of the CKM and PMNS mixing matrices, we predict $-32.4^\circ < δ< 32.0^\circ$ at $2σ$.
We consider the $ν$MSM which is an extension of the Standard Model by three right-handed neutrinos with masses below the electroweak scale, in which the origins of neutrino masses, dark matter, and baryon asymmetry of the universe are simultaneously explained. Among three heavy neutral leptons, $N_2$ and $N_3$, which are responsible to the seesaw mechanism of active neutrino masses and the baryogenesis via flavor oscillation, can induce sizable contributions to various lepton universality in decays of charged mesons. It is then investigated the possible deviations of the universality in the $ν…
We present Standard Model predictions for lepton flavour universality ratios of inclusive $B\to X_{(c)} \ell \barν_\ell$. For the $\ell=μ,e$, these ratios are very close to unity as expected. For the $τ$ mode, we update the SM prediction for the branching ratio including power-corrections in the heavy-quark expansion up to $1/m_b^3$. These inclusive ratios serve as an important cross-check of the exclusive $B\to D^{(*)}\ell\barν_\ell$ modes, in which tensions exists between the predictions and measurements in those modes.
In the Standard Model extended by sterile neutrinos, modified W-l-nu couplings arise, which are able to induce a tree-level enhancement to lepton flavour universality violation in kaon decays. The additional mixing between the active neutrinos and the sterile ones can generate deviations from unitarity in the leptonic mixing matrix for charged currents. We reconsidered this idea in the context of the inverse seesaw and evaluated its impact on the well measured ratio $R_K$. We show that the current experimental bound can be saturated in agreement with the different experimental and observationa…
Present measurements of b->c tau nu and b->u tau nu transitions differ from the standard model predictions of lepton flavor universality by almost 4sigma. We examine new physics interpretations of this anomaly. An effective field theory analysis shows that minimal flavor violating models are not preferred as an explanation, but are also not yet excluded. Allowing for general flavor violation, right-right vector and right-left scalar quark currents are identified as viable candidates. We discuss explicit examples of two Higgs doublet models, leptoquarks as well as quark and lepton compositeness…
We describe a possibility to explain the $2.6σ$ deviation from lepton flavour universality observed by the LHCb collaboration in $B^+\to K^+\ell^+\ell^-$ decays in the context of minimal composite Higgs models. We find that a sizable degree of compositeness of partially composite muons can lead to a good agreement with the experimental data. Our construction predicts a new physics contribution to $B_s$-$\bar{B}_s$ mixing. Additionally, it accounts for the deficit in the invisible $Z$ width measured at LEP.
We study the model with three right-handed neutrinos which masses are smaller than the weak scale ${\cal O}(10^2)$ GeV (called as the $ν$MSM). The model can explain the origin of neutrino masses by the seesaw mechanism, offer a candidate of dark matter and realize the baryogenesis via neutrino oscillation. The seesaw mechanism at such energy scales can induce phenomenon which are observable by experiments. As an example, we discuss the lepton universality of charged kaon decays in this model. It is shown that the heavy neutral leptons accounting for the neutrino masses and the cosmic baryon as…
The recently observed lepton mixing angle $θ_{13}$ of the MNS mixing matrix is well incorporated in a universal mixing hypothesis between quark and lepton sectors. This hypothesis asserts that, in the charged lepton diagonal base, all other mass matrices for up- and down-type quarks and light neutrinos are diagonalized by the same unitary matrix except for the phase elements. It is expressed as $V_{CKM}= U_{MNS}(δ^\prime)^\dagger P U_{MNS}(δ)$ for quark mixing matrix $V_{CKM}$ and lepton mixing matrix $U_{MNS}(δ)$ in the phenomenological level. Here $P$ is a diagonal phase mass matrix. $δ^\pri…
Even though the LHC searches did not unveil the new physics particles so far, LHCb hints towards deviations from lepton flavor universality in exclusive decays based on the transition $b\to s\ell\ell$. In this proceeding, we present a new leptoquark model that can explain both $R_{K}^{\mathrm{exp}}<R_{K}^{\mathrm{SM}}$ and $R_{K^\ast}^{\mathrm{exp}}<R_{K^\ast}^{\mathrm{SM}}$ via loop effects, consistent with observations made by LHCb. We discuss the main predictions of this scenario that can be tested experimentally, which include the bounds on lepton flavor violating decays $\mathcal{B}(Z\toμ…
We investigate the constraint on the split fermions in extra dimensions by considering the universality of $W$ leptonic decays $W\to l_i ν_i$, the charged lepton decays $l_i \ra l_jν_i\barν_j$, and the lepton flavor violating process $l_i\ra \bar{l}_j l_k l_h$ where $l_i= e,μ$ or $τ$. For the Standard Model (SM) background of $W\ra l_i ν_i$, we extended the one loop quantum correction to include effects of order $m_l^2/M_W^2$ and the Higgs mass dependence. We find that in general the split fermion scenarios give rise to a 4D effective Yukawa matrix of the Kaluza-Klein Higgs bosons is misaligne…
Lepton Flavor Universality Violation (LFUV) in $B$ decays in both neutral $b\rightarrow s l^+ l^-$ and charged $b\rightarrow cl\barν_{l}$ processes observed in the ratios $R_{K^{(*)}}$ and $R_{D^{(*)}}$ is investigated in the framework of a model based on the extended symmetry gauge $SU(3)_{C}\otimes SU(3)_{L}\otimes U(1)_{X}$ whose leptonic sector consists of five triplets. It is shown that in order to explain the experimentally observed deviations from the Standard Model in these flavor changing transitions, a non-minimal version of the model has to be considered. We investigate the ability …
In this work we examine the possible existence of new physics beyond the standard model which could modify the branching fractions of the leptonic (mainly tauonic) decays of bottomonium vector resonances below the $B\bar{B}$ threshold. The decay width is factorized as the product of two pieces: a) the probability of an intermediate pseudoscalar color-singlet $b\bar{b}$ state (coupling to the dominant Fock state of the Upsilon via a magnetic dipole transition) and a soft (undetected) photon; b) the annihilation width of the $b\bar{b}$ pair into two leptons, mediated by a non-standard CP-odd Hig…
Motivated by recent experimental measurements on flavour physics, in tension with Standard Model predictions, we perform an updated analysis of New Physics violating Lepton Flavour Universality, by using the effective Lagrangian approach and in the Z' and S_3 leptoquark models. We explicitly analyze the impact of considering complex Wilson coefficients in the analysis of B-anomalies, by performing a global fit of R_K and R_K*0 observables, together with ΔMs and A_CP^mix. The inclusion of complex couplings provides a slightly improved global fit, and a marginally improved ΔMs prediction.
We consider a tree-level enhancement to the violation of lepton flavour universality in light meson decays arising from modified $W \ell ν$ couplings in the standard model minimally extended by sterile neutrinos. Due to the presence of additional mixings between the active (left-handed) neutrinos and the new sterile states, the deviation from unitarity of the leptonic mixing matrix intervening in charged currents might lead to a tree-level enhancement of $R_{P} = Γ(P \to e ν) / Γ(P \to μν)$, with $P=K, π$. We illustrate these enhancements in the case of the inverse seesaw model, showing that o…
We derive the time-reversal modified universality for both quark and gluon Sivers function from the parity and time-reversal invariance of QCD. We calculate the single transverse-spin asymmetry of inclusive lepton from the decay of $W$ bosons in polarized proton-proton collision at RHIC, in terms of the Sivers function. We find that although the asymmetry is diluted from the $W$ decay, the lepton asymmetry is at the level of several percent and is measurable for a good range of lepton rapidity at RHIC. We argue that this measurable lepton asymmetry at RHIC is an excellent observable for testin…
In this talk I will present the work that we did in \cite{1}\cite{2}\cite{3}\cite{4}\cite{5} related to observed lepton universality violation by Babar, Belle and LHCb in R($D^{(*)}$) and $R_{K^{(*)}}$ as well as the reported deviation in muon (g-2) by BNL. We had shown that all these anomalies as well as Baryon-genesis, Dark-matter and small neutrino masses could be explained by introducing new exotic scalars, leptons and scalar-leptoquarks only. It turn out that some of these models have very peculiar signatures such as prediction of existence of heavy stable charged particle \cite{1}\cite{2…
The evidence for Lepton Flavour Universality (LFU) violation in semileptonic $B$-decays has been rising over the past few years. Relying on generic effective field theory (EFT) results, it has been shown that models addressing the $B$-anomalies necessarily lead, at one-loop, to deviations from LFU in $τ$ decays at the few per-mil level. Once a (renormalizable) UV model is specified, the leading-log EFT result receives finite corrections from the matching at the UV scale. We discuss such corrections in a motivated class of models for the B-anomalies, based on an extended $SU(4) \times SU(3) \ti…
In the Standard Model (SM), the coupling of the electroweak gauge bosons to the leptons is lepton flavour universal. Tests of this property constitute sensitive probes for new physics models that violate lepton flavour universality. Recent tests of lepton universality in rare $b\to s\ell\ell$ decays and semileptonic $b\to cτ\barν_τ$ transitions have shown some tensions with the precise SM predictions. These proceedings summarise the latest results on lepton flavour universality from the LHCb experiment.
We propose improved Lepton Flavor Universality (LFU) ratios in semileptonic $P\to V \ell \barν$ decays, when comparing $μ$ and $τ$ modes, that minimize the theoretical form-factor uncertainties. These optimized ratios are obtained with simple cuts or reweighting of the dilepton mass distributions, which imply a minimum loss of signal on the rare tauonic modes while maximizing the cancellation of theoretical uncertainties among the two modes. We illustrate the usefulness of these observables in $B_c\to J/ψ$, $B_c\to ψ(2S)$, $B\to D^\ast$ and $B_s\to D_s^\ast$ transitions, showing that in all ca…
331 models constitute an extension of the Standard Model (SM) obtained by enlarging the SM gauge group $SU(3)_\text{C}\times SU(2)_\text{L}\times U(1)_Y$ to the group $SU(3)_\text{C}\times SU(3)_\text{L}\times U(1)_X$. We investigate how a non-minimal 331 model may embed lepton flavour universality violating contributions to $b\to s\ell\ell$ processes without introducing lepton flavour violation, as suggested by the recent LHCb measurements of the ratios $R_K$ and $R_{K^*}$. We discuss the model-independent scenarios of New Physics in $b\to s\ell\ell$ currently favoured by the data that could …
We analyse the new physics implications of theoretically clean $b \to s$ observables in a model-independent approach and compare their coherence with the implications of other rare $B$-decays. A statistical comparison is done between the New Physics explanation and hadronic contributions as the source of the anomalies in angular observables of the $B\to K^*μμ$ decay. We make projections for future measurements that indicate that LHCb will be in the position to discover lepton non-universality via a single observable using the Run 3 data. The global fit of rare $B$-decays is given within a mult…
Semileptonic $b \rightarrow s\ell \ell$ processes constitute a good probe for new physics phenomena: new particles contributing to the loops could affect branching fractions and angular distributions, and have different couplings to different lepton families, thus violating lepton flavour universality. Recent results from the LHCb experiment are reviewed.
The persisting anomalous data in semileptonic B-decays point towards New Physics models exhibiting large sources of Lepton Flavour Universality Violation. In this work we generalise previous studies by considering frameworks which include an enlarged set of semileptonic four-fermion operators invariant under the SM gauge group, with New Physics affecting mainly the third generation. We derive the low-energy effective Lagrangian including the leading electroweak corrections, mandatory to obtain reliable predictions. As a particularly interesting case, we analyse the scenario where the dominant …
We present a new class of models of lepton flavor in the composite Higgs framework. Following the concept of minimality, they lead to a rich phenomenology in good agreement with the current experimental picture. Because of a unification of the right-handed leptons, our scenario is very predictive and can naturally lead to a violation of lepton-flavor universality in neutral current interactions. We will show that, in particular, the anomaly in $R_K= {\cal B}(B \to K μ^+ μ^-)/{\cal B}(B \to K e^+ e^-)$, found by LHCb, can be addressed, while other constraints from quark- and lepton-flavor physi…
We propose a gauge model where quark-lepton universality is an accidental symmetry which is only approximate, in analogy to the well-accepted notion that strong isospin is accidental and approximate. This is a natural framework for explaining possible small deviations of quark-lepton universality which is applicable to the recently reported apparent nonunitarity of the quark mixing matrix. As a result, small departures from quark-lepton universality are expected in Z decays as well as in the recent neutrino data of the NuTeV collaboration and in future low-energy experiments. New physics is pr…
We study rare four-body decays of the Z-boson involving at least one neutrino and one charged lepton. Large destructive interferences make these decays very sensitive to the Z couplings to neutrinos. As the identified charged leptons can determine the neutrino flavors, these decays probe the universality of the Z couplings to neutrinos. The rare four-body processes could be accurately measured at future lepton colliders, leading to percent level precision.
In view of recent experimental indications of violations of Lepton Flavor Universality (LFU) in $B$ decays, we analyze constraints and implications of LFU interactions, both using an effective theory approach, and an explicit dynamical model. We show that a simple dynamical model based on a $SU(2)_L$ triplet of massive vector bosons, coupled predominantly to third generation fermions (both quarks and leptons), can significantly improve the description of present data. In particular, the model decreases the tension between data and SM predictions concerning: i) the breaking of $τ$-$μ$ universal…
Experimental hints for lepton-flavor universality violation in the muon's magnetic moment as well as neutral- and charged-current $B$-meson decays require Standard-Model extensions by particles such as leptoquarks that generically lead to unacceptably fast rates of charged lepton flavor violation and proton decay. We propose a model based on a gauged $U(1)_{L_μ-L_τ}$ that eliminates all these unwanted decays by symmetry rather than finetuning and efficiently explains $(g-2)_μ$, $R_{K^{(*)}}$, $R_{D^{(*)}}$, and neutrino masses. The $U(1)_{L_μ-L_τ}$ furthermore acts as a stabilizing symmetry fo…
A unified description of fermionic mixing is proposed which assumes that in certain basis ($i$) a single complex unitary matrix $V$ diagonalizes mass matrices of all fermions to the leading order, ($ii$) the SU(5) relation $M_d=M_l^T$ exists between the mass matrices of the down quarks and the charged leptons, and ($iii$) $M_d^\dagger=M_d$. These assumptions automatically lead to different mixing patterns for quarks and leptons: quarks remain unmixed to leading order ($i. e. V_{CKM}=1$) while leptons have non-trivial mixing given by a symmetric unitary matrix $V^0_{PMNS} = V^T V$. $V$ depends …
It has been known that $R_b$ can be enhanced in the two Higgs doublet model if $\tan β$ is large. We point out that a similar enhancement in $Γ(Z \to τ^+ τ^-)$ is large enough to place a constraint on such a possibility. We obtain a 95% CL upper bound $ΔR_b/R_{b} < 0.73%$ in this model for the $\overline{MS}$ mass $m_{b} (m_{Z}) = 3.0$ GeV. The 1996 world average is $ΔR_{b}/R_{b}$ = $0.97% \pm 0.51%$. We used the $m_{b}(m_{Z})$ to determine the bottom Yukawa coupling instead of $m_b(m_{b})$ unlike in previous analyses, and also an improved experimental test of the lepton universality in $Z$ de…
In previous studies we found that models with flavor-universal suppression of the neutrino-gauge couplings are compatible with NuTeV and Z-pole data. In this paper we expand our analysis to obtain constraints on flavor-dependent coupling suppression by including lepton universality data from W, tau, pi and K decays in fits to model parameters. We find that the data are consistent with a variety of patterns of coupling suppression. In particular, in scenarios in which the suppression arises from the mixing of light neutrinos with heavy gauge singlet states (neutrissimos), we find patterns of fl…
The Belle Collaboration presented three recent Belle analyses: The search for $B\rightarrow lνγ$ ($l = e, μ$) with improved hadronic tagging, the search for $B\rightarrow μν_μ$ with inclusive tagging and the test of lepton universality in $B\rightarrow K^*ll$ ($l = e, μ$) decays.
We discuss a number of strategies to reduce the $\mathcal B(B^0_s \to \ell^{+} \ell^{-} γ)$ theoretical error, and make such a measurement a new probe of the interactions that are interesting in the light of present-day flavor discrepancies. In particular, for low di-lepton invariant mass we propose to exploit the close parenthood between $\mathcal B(B^0_s \to \ell^{+} \ell^{-} γ)$ and the measured $\mathcal B(B^0_s \to ϕ(\to K^+ K^-) γ)$. For high $q^2$, conversely, we exploit the fact that the decay is dominated by two form-factor combinations, plus contributions from broad charmonium that w…
The most recent measurements of the observables $R_{D^{(*)}}$ are in tension with the Standard Model offering hints of New Physics in $b\rightarrow c \ell \barν_{\ell}$ transitions. Motivated by these results, in this work we present an analysis on their $b\rightarrow u \ell \barν_{\ell}$ counterparts (for $\ell=e, ~μ, ~τ$). Our study has three main objectives. Firstly, using ratios of branching fractions, we assess the effects of beyond the Standard Model scalar and pseudoscalar particles in leptonic and semileptonic $B$ decays ($B^-\rightarrow \ell^- \barν_{\ell}$, $\bar{B}\rightarrow π\ell …
We address the recent anomalies in semi-leptonic $B$-meson decays using a model of fermion masses based on the $U(2)$ flavor symmetry. The new contributions to $b \to s \ell \ell$ transitions arise due to a tree-level exchange of a $Z^\prime$ vector boson gauging a $U(1)$ subgroup of the flavor symmetry. They are controlled by a single parameter and are approximately aligned to the Standard Model prediction, with constructive interference in the $e$-channel and destructive interference in the $μ$-channel. The current experimental data on semi-leptonic $B$-meson decays can be very well reproduc…
There are some slight tensions with the SM predictions within the latest LHCb measurements. Besides the known anomaly in one angular observable of the rare decay B -> K* mu+ mu-, another small discrepancy recently occurred. The ratio R_K = BR(B+ -> K+ mu+ mu-) / BR(B+ -> K+ e+ e-) in the low-q^2 region has been measured by LHCb showing a 2.6 sigma deviation from the SM prediction. In contrast to the anomaly in the rare decay B -> K* mu+ mu- which is affected by power corrections, the ratio R_K is theoretically rather clean. We analyse all the b -> s ll data with global fits and in particular e…
We suggest a new class of tests for searching for lepton flavor non-universality (LFNU) using ratio observables and based on correlations among the underlying LFNU new physics (NP) effects in several (seemingly independent) di-lepton and single lepton + jet(s) processes. This is demonstrated by studying the effects generated by LFNU 4-Fermi interactions involving 3rd generation quarks. We find that the sensitivity to the scale ($Λ$) of the LFNU 4-Fermi operators significantly improves when the correlations among the various di-lepton +jets and single-lepton + jets processes are used, reaching …
The coupling of the electroweak gauge bosons of the Standard Model (SM) to leptons is flavour universal. Extensions of the SM do not necessarily have this property. Rare decays of heavy flavour are suppressed in the SM and new particles may give sizeable contributions to these processes, therefore, their precise study allows for sensitive tests of lepton flavour universality. Of particular interest are rare b to sll decays that are well accessible at the LHCb experiment. Recent results from LHCb on lepton flavour universality in rare b to sll decays are discussed.
I show that the neutral pion decay in $B \to K^{(*)} π^0 γ$, with $π^0 \to ee γ$, might generate large sources of lepton flavor universality violation (LFUV) in measurements of the ratios, $R_{K^{(*)}}$: If the photons in the $K^{(*)} e e γγ$ final state are reconstructed as Bremsstrahlung, the recovered electron-positron invariant mass can be pushed into the $1$-$6$ GeV$^{2}$ signal region, artificially enhancing the measured $B \to K^{(*)} e e$ branching ratio compared to $B \to K^{(*)} μμ$. I present a conservative estimate and simulation of the $B \to K π^0 γ$ LFUV background at LHCb, that…
Several measurements of tree- and loop-level b-hadron decays performed in the recent years hint at a possible violation of Lepton Universality. This article presents an experimental and theoretical overview of the current status of the field.
A recent proposal for explaining discrepancies in angular observables in the rare decay B --> K*mu+mu- with a gauged L_mu - L_tau current carried with it the prediction of lepton flavor universality violation in related B-meson decays. This prediction gained empirical support with a subsequent hint for lepton flavor universality violation in the B --> K l+l- decay by LHCb. In this short paper we fully quantify the prediction including the associated uncertainties. We also provide new predictions for a variety of additional observables sensitive to lepton flavor universality violation in B-meso…
In this work we extend the SM by introducing only exotic scalars and leptons and show that within the reasonable error limits, both the observed anomalies in $R(D^{(*)})$ and $R_{K^{(*)}}$ can be explained along with satisfying all the constrains from nuetral meson oscillations, precision Z-pole data etc. In a trivial extension of our model with addition of three heavy right handed neutrinos, explaining the small masses of neutrinos and generation of Baryon excess via leptogenesis is possible as well. The disagreement between SM prediction and experimental data in muon (g-2) measurements can b…
