Recently the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration, with very-long baseline interferometric observations, resolved structure at the scale of $\sim5$ Schwarzschild radii about the center of M87$^*$, the supermassive black hole resident at the center of Messier 87. This important observation has paved the way for testing what is known as the "no-hair" theorem, stating that isolated black holes are described by the Kerr metric, parameterized only by their mass and spin. Generic, parameterized spacetimes beyond Kerr allow one to arbitrarily test the no-hair theorem for deviations from the Kerr result with no prior theoretical knowledge or motivation. In this paper, we present such a new general, stationary, axisymmetric and asymptotically flat black hole solution with separable geodesic equations (thus preserving symmetries of a Kerr black hole), extending the previous work of Johannsen. In this new metric, five free non-linear functions parameterically deviate from the Kerr result, allowing one to effectively transform to many alternative black hole solutions present in the literature. We then derive analytic expressions for the Keplerian and epicyclic frequencies, the orbital energy and angular momentum, and the location of the innermost stable orbit of circular equatorial particle orbits. We also compute the image of the photon rings in the new spacetime, which correspond to the boundary of the black hole shadow image taken by the Event Horizon Telescope. We finally compare each quantity for the Kerr result against various parameterizations of the metric, finding that, especially for highly rotating black holes, the two solutions disagree significantly. Such a metric parameterization allows one to perform the no-hair tests in a model-independent way, and finally map constraints to specific alternative theories of gravity.
We determine all spacetime flows which lead to a Hamiltonian dynamics in the space of general relativistic initial data sets with asymptotically Kerr-de Sitter ends. The corresponding Hamiltonians are calculated. Some implications for black-hole thermodynamics are pointed out.
We present our derivations for Kerr-deSitter metric in a proper comoving coordinate system. It asymptotically approaches to the deSitter metric in Robertson-walker form. This has been done by considring the stationary axially-symmetric spacetime in which motion of particle is integrable. That is the Hamilton-Jacobi and Klein-Gordon equations are separable. In this form it is asymptotically consistent with comoving frame.
We first review asymptotic twistor theory with its real subspace of null asymptotic twistors. This is followed by a description of an asymptotic version of the Kerr theorem that produces regular asymptotically shear free null geodesic congruences in arbitrary asymptotically flat Einstein or Einstein-Maxwell spacetimes.
The shadow of a black hole can be one of the strong observational evidences for stationary black holes. If we see shadows at the center of galaxies, we would say whether the observed compact objects are black holes. In this paper, we consider a formula for the contour of a shadow in an asymptotically-flat, stationary, and axisymmetric black hole spacetime. We show that the formula is useful for obtaining the contour of the shadow of several black holes such as the Kerr-Newman black hole and rotating regular black holes. Using the formula, we can obtain new examples of the contour of the shadow…
We obtain a characterization of the Kerr metric among stationary, asymptotically flat, vacuum spacetimes, which extends the characterization in terms of the Simon tensor (defined only in the manifold of trajectories) to the whole spacetime. More precisely, we define a three index tensor on any spacetime with a Killing field, which vanishes identically for Kerr and which coincides in the strictly stationary region with the Simon tensor when projected down into the manifold of trajectories. We prove that a stationary asymptotically flat vacuum spacetime with vanishing spacetime Simon tensor is l…
We investigate solutions $(\mathcal{M}, g)$ to Einstein's vacuum field equations with positive cosmological constant $Λ$ which admit a smooth past null infinity $\mathcal{J}^-$ à la Penrose and a Killing vector field whose associated Mars-Simon tensor (MST) vanishes. The main purpose of this work is to provide a characterization of these spacetimes in terms of their Cauchy data on $\mathcal{J}^-$. Along the way, we also study spacetimes for which the MST does not vanish. In that case there is an ambiguity in its definition which is captured by a scalar function $Q$. We analyze properties of th…
Gravitational waves from the explosive merger of distant black holes are encoded with details regarding the complex extreme-gravity spacetime present at their source. Famously described by the Kerr spacetime metric for rotating black holes in general relativity, what if effects beyond this theory are present? One way to efficiently test this hypothesis is to first obtain a metric which parametrically deviates from the Kerr metric in a model-independent way. Given such a metric, one can then predict the ensuing corrections to both the inspiral and ringdown portions of the gravitational waveform…
The Cardy-Verlinde formula is generalized to the asymptotically flat rotating charged black holes in the Einstein-Maxwell theory and low-energy effective field theory describing string by using some typical spacetimes, such as the Kerr-Newman, Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton-axion, Kaluza-Klein, and Sen black holes. For the Kerr-Newman black hole, the definition of the Casimir energy takes the same form as that of the Kerr-Newman-AdS$_4$ and Kerr-Newman-dS$_4$ black holes, while the Cardy-Verlinde formula possesses different from since the Casimir energy does not appear in the extensive energy. The E…
We prove a perturbative result concerning the uniqueness of Kerr-Newman family of black holes: given an asymptotically flat space-time with bifurcate horizons, if it agrees with a non-extremal Kerr-Newman space-time asymptotically flat at infinity and it is sufficiently close to the Kerr-Newman family, then the space-time must be one of the Kerr-Newman solutions. The closeness to the Kerr-Newman family is measured by the smallness of a pair of Mars-Simon type tensors, which were introduced by Wong in \cite{Wong_09} to detect the Kerr-Newmann family.
We obtain a geometrical condition on vacuum, stationary, asymptotically flat spacetimes which is necessary and sufficient for the spacetime to be locally isometric to Kerr. Namely, we prove a theorem stating that an asymptotically flat, stationary, vacuum spacetime such that the so-called Killing form is an eigenvector of the self-dual Weyl tensor must be locally isometric to Kerr. Asymptotic flatness is a fundamental hypothesis of the theorem, as we demonstrate by writing down the family of metrics obtained when this requirement is dropped. This result indicates why the Kerr metric plays such…
An accurate closed-form expression is provided to predict the bending angle of light as a function of impact parameter for equatorial orbits around Kerr black holes of arbitrary spin. This expression is constructed by assuring that the weak- and strong-deflection limits are explicitly satisfied while maintaining accuracy at intermediate values of impact parameter via the method of asymptotic approximants (Barlow et al, 2016 Q. J. Mech. Appl. Math., doi=10.1093/qjmam/hbw014). To this end, the strong deflection limit for a prograde orbit around an extremal black hole is examined, and the full no…
We generalize the bumpy black hole framework to allow for alternative theory deformations. We construct two model-independent parametric deviations from the Kerr metric: one built from a generalization of the quasi-Kerr and bumpy metrics and one built directly from perturbations of the Kerr spacetime in Lewis-Papapetrou form. We find the conditions that these "bumps" must satisfy for there to exist an approximate second-order Killing tensor so that the perturbed spacetime still possesses three constants of the motion (a deformed energy, angular momentum and Carter constant) and the geodesic eq…
We construct one-parameter families of solutions to the Einstein--Klein--Gordon equations bifurcating off the Kerr solution such that the underlying family of spacetimes are each an asymptotically flat, stationary, axisymmetric, black hole spacetime, and such that the corresponding scalar fields are non-zero and time-periodic. An immediate corollary is that for these Klein--Gordon masses, the Kerr family is not asymptotically stable as a solution to the Einstein--Klein--Gordon equations.
In this paper we argue that the well-known maximal extensions of the Kerr and Kerr-Newman spacetimes characterized by a specific gluing (on disks) of two asymptotically flat regions with ADM masses of opposite signs are physically inconsistent and actually non-analytic. We also discover a correct geometrical interpretation of the surface $r=0$, $t={\rm const}$ - a dicone in the case of the Kerr solution and a more sophisticated surface of non-zero Gaussian curvature in the case of the Kerr-Newman solution - which suggests that the problem of constructing the maximal analytic extensions for the…
We show that non-degenerate multiple black hole solution of Einstein- Maxwell equations in an asymptotically flat axisymmetric spacetime cannot be in stationary equilibrium. This extends the uniqueness of Kerr-Newman solution first proved by Bunting and Mazur in a much wider desirable class. Spin-spin interaction cannot hold the black hole aparts even with electromagnetic forces.
We consider Kerr-de Sitter spacetimes and evaluate their mass, angular momentum and entropy according to the boundary counterterm prescription. We provide a physicall interpretation for angular velocity and angular momentum at future/past infinity. We show that the entropy of the four-dimensional Kerr-de Sitter spacetimes is less than of pure de Sitter spacetime in agreement to the entropic N-bound. Moreover, we show that maximal mass conjecture which states any asymptotically de Sitter spacetime with mass greater than de Sitter has a cosmological singularity is respected by asymptotically de …
Aligned to the Kerr-Schild geometry electromagnetic excitations are investigated, and asymptotically exact solutions are obtained for the low-frequency limit.
We consider the quasilocal thermodynamics of rotating black holes in asymptotically flat and asymptotically anti de Sitter spacetimes. Using the minimal number of intrinsic boundary counterterms inspired by the AdS/CFT correspondence, we find that we are able to carry out an analysis of the thermodynamics of these black holes for virtually all possible values of the rotation parameter and cosmological constant that leave the quasilocal boundary well-defined, going well beyond what is possible with background subtraction methods. Specifically, we compute the quasilocal energy $E$ and angular mo…
This is the third paper in a series of papers adressing the characteristic gluing problem for the Einstein vacuum equations. We provide full details of our characteristic gluing (including the $10$ charges) of strongly asymptotically flat data to the data of a suitably chosen Kerr spacetime. The choice of the Kerr spacetime crucially relies on relating the $10$ charges to the ADM energy, linear momentum, angular momentum and the center-of-mass. As a corollary, we obtain an alternative proof of the Corvino-Schoen spacelike gluing construction for strongly asymptotically flat spacelike initial d…
We construct an asymptotic conserved charge for a current that has been defined using Killing-Yano tensors. We then calculate the corresponding conserved charges of of the Kerr and AdS-Kerr black holes, and their higher-dimensional generalizations, Myers-Perry and Gibbons-Lü-Page-Pope black holes. The new charges all turn out to be proportional to the angular momenta of their parent black holes.
We prove that the only four dimensional, stationary, rotating, asymptotically flat (analytic) vacuum black hole with a single degenerate horizon is given by the extremal Kerr solution. We also prove a similar uniqueness theorem for the extremal Kerr-Newman solution. This closes a longstanding gap in the black hole uniqueness theorems.
In recent joint work with Vasy, we analyze the low energy behavior of differential form-valued waves on black hole spacetimes. In order to deduce asymptotics and decay from this, one in addition needs high energy estimates for the wave operator acting on sections of the form bundle. The present paper provides these on perturbations of Schwarzschild-de Sitter spaces in all spacetime dimensions $n\geq 4$. In fact, we prove exponential decay, up to a finite-dimensional space of resonances, of waves valued in any finite rank subbundle of the tensor bundle, which in particular includes differential…
A geometrical invariant for regular asymptotically Euclidean data for the vacuum Einstein field equations is constructed. This invariant vanishes if and only if the data correspond to a slice of the Kerr black hole spacetime --thus, it provides a measure of the non-Kerr-like behavior of generic data. In order to proceed with the construction of the geometric invariant, we introduce the notion of approximate Killing spinors.
This note addresses quasinormal mode frequencies of four-dimensional asymptotically de Sitter rotating black holes. The main motivation is that Mathematica 12.1 has implemented a new family of special functions: Heun functions. Using the fact that Teukolsky's equations for Kerr-de Sitter black holes are mapped to Heun's equations, we are able to compute their quasinormal mode frequencies by the Heun function. In this approach, Mathematica normally evaluates these frequencies to arbitrary numerical precision in a few seconds. We further discuss an application to asymptotically flat rotating bla…
It was confirmed that the negative modes of the Euclidean section for asymptotically flat black holes reveal the thermodynamic instability of these black holes in the grand canonical ensemble (GCE). These include Schwarzschild, Reissner-Nordström, Kerr, and Kerr-Newman black holes. In this work, we develop the relation between thermodynamic instability in the GCE and tachyonic instability for asymptotically flat black holes, where the latter is the onset for obtaining black holes with scalar hair. This implies that the tachyonic instability of black holes when introducing scalar coupling to th…
We present a plausible counterexample to the weak cosmic censorship conjecture in the four-dimensional Einstein-Scalar theory with asymptotically flat boundary conditions. Our setup stems from the analysis of the massive Klein-Gordon equation on a fixed Kerr black hole background. In particular, we construct the quasinormal spectrum numerically, and analytically in the WKB approximation, then go on to compute its backreaction on the Kerr geometry. In the regime of parameters where the analytic and numerical techniques overlap we find perfect agreement. We give strong evidence for the existence…
We analytically investigate the shadows cast by rotating black holes in the asymptotically safe gravity (ASG) by deriving complete null geodesics and observables using the Hamilton-Jacobi equation and Carter separable method. It turns out that the apparent shape and size of the shadow depend on the ASG parameters ($ζ, γ$) in addition to other black hole parameters ($M, a$). The size of black hole shadows monotonically decreases and shadows get more distorted with increasing values of ASG parameters when compared with the Kerr black hole shadows. In turn, we use shadow observables to estimate b…
We formulate the variational problem for AdS gravity with Dirichlet boundary conditions and demonstrate that the covariant counterterms are necessary to make the variational problem well-posed. The holographic charges associated with asymptotic symmetries are then rederived via Noether's theorem and `covariant phase space' techniques. This allows us to prove the first law of black hole mechanics for general asymptotically locally AdS black hole spacetimes. We illustrate our discussion by computing the conserved charges and verifying the first law for the four dimensional Kerr-Newman-AdS and th…
We examine solutions to semilinear wave equations on black hole backgrounds and give a proof of an analog of the blow up part of the John theorem, with $F_p(u)=|u|^{p}$, on the Schwarzschild and Kerr black hole backgrounds. Concerning the case of Schwarzschild, we construct a class of small data, so that the solution blows up along the outgoing null cone, which applies for both $F_p(u)=|u|^{p}$ and the focusing nonlinearity $F_p(u)=|u|^{p-1}u$. The proof suggests that the black hole does not have any essential influence on the formation of singularity, in the region away from the Cauchy horizo…
As with any black hole, asymptotically anti-de Sitter Kerr black holes are described by a small number of parameters, including a "mass parameter" $M$ that reduces to the AdS-Schwarzschild mass in the limit of vanishing angular momentum. In sharp contrast to the asymptotically flat case, the horizon area of such a black hole increases with the angular momentum parameter $a$ if one fixes $M$, this appears to mean that the Penrose process in this case would violate the Second Law of black hole thermodynamics. We show that the correct procedure is to fix not $M$ but rather the "physical" mass $E=…
We describe conditions assuring that the Kerr--Schild type solutions of Einstein equations with pure radiation fields are asymptotically flat at future null infinity. Such metrics cannot describe ``true'' gravitational radiation from bounded sources--it is shown that the Bondi news function vanishes identically. We obtain formulae for the total energy and angular momentum at scri+. As an example we consider non-stationary generalization of the Kerr metric given by Vaidya and Patel. Angular momentum and total energy are expressed in closed form as functions of retarded time.
A radial deformation of the Kerr metric is studied which leads to the appearance of wormholes in certain cases. {\bf These wormholes can be thought of as being formed by two distinct but identical asymptotically non-flat spacetimes joined at the throat}. The status of energy conditions are discussed in details. The components of the energy-momentum tensor of the spacetime and its eigenvalues are explicitly given. It is shown that the resulting spacetime, represents a family of exact anisotropic fluid solutions.
A class of exact solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations is presented which describes an accelerating and rotating charged black hole in an asymptotically de Sitter or anti-de Sitter universe. The metric is presented in a new and convenient form in which the meaning of the parameters is clearly identified, and from which the physical properties of the solution can readily be interpreted.
We study the global dynamics of free massive scalar fields on general, globally stationary, asymptotically AdS black hole backgrounds with Dirichlet-, Neumann- or Robin- boundary conditions imposed on $ψ$ at infinity. This class includes the regular Kerr-AdS black holes satisfying the Hawking Reall bound $r_+^2 > |a|l$. We establish a suitable criterion for linear stability (in the sense of uniform boundedness) of $ψ$ and demonstrate how the issue of stability can depend on the boundary condition prescribed. In particular, in the slowly rotating Kerr-AdS case, we obtain the existence of linear…
By applying a set of Hassan-Sen transformations and string dualities to the Kerr-Godel solution of minimal D=5 supergravity we derive a four parameter family of five dimensional solutions in type II string theory. They describe rotating, charged black holes in a rotating background. For zero background rotation, the solution is D=5 Kerr-Newman; for zero charge it is Kerr-Godel. In a particular extremal limit the solution describes an asymptotically Godel BMPV black hole.
The calculation of conserved charges of black holes is a rich problem, for which many methods are known. Until recently, there was some controversy on the proper definition of conserved charges in asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS) spaces in arbitrary dimensions. This paper provides a systematic and explicit Hamiltonian derivation of the energy and the angular momenta of both asymptotically flat and asymptotically AdS spacetimes in any dimension D bigger or equal to 4. This requires as a first step a precise determination of the asymptotic conditions of the metric and of its conjugate momentu…
We briefly review how to compute the mass and angular momenta of rotating, asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravity using superpotentials derived from standard Noether identities. The calculations depend on the asymptotic form of the metrics only and hence take no account of the source of the curvature. When the source of curvature is a black hole, the results can be checked using the first law of black hole thermodynamics.
According to the no-hair theorem, the Kerr-Newman black hole solution represents the most general asymptotically flat, stationary (electro-) vacuum black hole solution in general relativity. The procedure described here shows how this solution can indeed be constructed as the unique solution to the corresponding boundary value problem of the axially symmetric Einstein-Maxwell equations in a straightforward manner.
The Kerr-Newman metric describes a very special rotating, charged mass and is the most general of the asymptotically flat stationary 'black hole' solutions to the Einstein-Maxwell equations of general relativity. We review the derivation of this metric from the Reissner-Nordstrom solution by means of a complex transformation algorithm and provide a brief overview of its basic geometric properties. We also include some discussion of interpretive issues, related metrics, and higher-dimensional analogues.
The low-temperature thermodynamics of near-extremal rotating black holes has recently been revisited to incorporate one-loop contributions that are dominant in this regime. We discuss these quantum corrections to the gravitational path integral for asymptotically Anti de-Sitter black holes in four and five dimensions. In four dimensions we explicitly consider Kerr-AdS$_4$, Kerr-Newman-AdS$_4$ and the rotating black hole in ${\cal N}=4$ gauged supergravity with two scalars and two electric charges turned on. In five dimensions we explicitly address the asymptotically flat Myers-Perry black hole…
We use a recent result by Cabezas et al. to build up an approximate solution to the gravitational field created by a rigidly rotating polytrope. We solve the linearized Einstein equations inside and outside the surface of zero pressure including second-order corrections due to rotational motion to get an asymptotically flat metric in a global harmonic coordinate system. We prove that if the metric and their first derivatives are continuous on the matching surface up to this order of approximation, the multipole moments of this metric cannot be fitted to those of the Kerr metric.
We obtain the Kerr-anti-de-sitter (Kerr-AdS) and Kerr-de-sitter (Kerr-dS) black hole (BH) solutions to the Einstein field equation in the perfect fluid dark matter background using the Newman-Janis method and Mathematica package. We discuss in detail the black hole properties and obtain the following main results: (i) From the horizon equation $g_{rr}=0$, we derive the relation between the perfect fluid dark matter parameter $α$ and the cosmological constant $Λ$ when the cosmological horizon $r_Λ$ exists. For $Λ=0$, we find that $α$ is in the range $0<α<2M$ for $α>0$ and $-7.18M<α<0$ for $α<0$…
We show that a stationary asymptotically flat electro-vacuum solution of Einstein's equations that is everywhere locally "almost isometric" to a Kerr-Newman solution cannot admit more than one event horizon. Axial symmetry is not assumed. In particular this implies that the assumption of a single event horizon in Alexakis-Ionescu-Klainerman's proof of perturbative uniqueness of Kerr black holes is in fact unnecessary.
Recently it was shown that the conserved charges of asymptotically anti de Sitter spacetimes can be written in an explicitly gauge-invariant way in terms of the linearized Riemann tensor and the Killing vectors. Here we employ this construction to compute the mass and angular momenta of the D dimensional Kerr-AdS black holes, which is one of the most remarkable Einstein metrics generalizing the four dimensional rotating black hole.

A new proof of the uniqueness of the Kerr-Newman black hole solutions amongst asymptotically flat, stationary and axisymmetric electro-vacuum spacetimes surrounding a connected Killing horizon is given by means of an explicit construction of the corresponding complex Ernst potentials on the axis of symmetry. This construction, which makes use of the inverse scattering method, also works in the case of a degenerate horizon.
We consider the Dirac equation on the Kerr-Newman-AdS black hole background. We first perform the variable separation for the Dirac equation and define the Hamiltonian operator $\hat H$. Then we show that for a massive Dirac field with mass $μ\geq \frac{1}{2l}$ essential selfadjointness of $\hat H$ on $C_0^{\infty} ((r_+,\infty) \times S^2)^4$ is obtained even in presence of the boundary-like behavior of infinity in an asymptotically AdS black hole background. Furthermore qualitative spectral properties of the Hamiltonian are taken into account and in agreement with the existing results concer…
