In this paper we show that a Brownian Gibbsian line ensemble is completely characterized by the finite-dimensional marginals of its top curve, i.e. the finite-dimensional sets of the its top curve form a separating class. A particular consequence of our result is that the Airy line ensemble is the unique Brownian Gibbsian line ensemble, whose top curve is the Airy$_2$ process.
In this paper we show that an $H$-Brownian Gibbsian line ensemble is completely characterized by the finite-dimensional marginals of its lowest indexed curve for a large class of interaction Hamiltonians $H$. A particular consequence of our result is that the KPZ line ensemble is the unique line ensemble that satisfies the $H_1$-Brownian Gibbs property with $H_1(x) = e^x$ and whose lowest indexed curve is equal to the Hopf-Cole solution to the narrow wedge KPZ equation.
Consider a sequence of Gibbsian line ensembles, whose lowest labeled curves (i.e., the edge) have tight one-point marginals. Then, given certain technical assumptions on the nature of the Gibbs property and underlying random walk measure, we prove that the entire spatial process of the edge is tight. We then apply this black-box theory to the log-gamma polymer Gibbsian line ensemble which we construct. The edge of this line ensemble is the transversal free energy process for the polymer, and our theorem implies tightness with the ubiquitous KPZ class $2/3$ exponent, as well as Brownian absolut…
A Bernoulli Gibbsian line ensemble $\mathfrak{L} = (L_1, \dots, L_N)$ is the law of the trajectories of $N-1$ independent Bernoulli random walkers $L_1, \dots, L_{N-1}$ with possibly random initial and terminal locations that are conditioned to never cross each other or a given random up-right path $L_N$ (i.e. $L_1 \geq \cdots \geq L_N$). In this paper we investigate the asymptotic behavior of sequences of Bernoulli Gibbsian line ensembles $\mathfrak{L}^N = (L^N_1, \dots, L^N_N)$ when the number of walkers $N$ tends to infinity. We prove that if one has mild but uniform control of the one-poin…
A discrete Gibbsian line ensemble $\mathfrak{L} = (L_1,\dots,L_N)$ consists of $N$ independent random walks on the integers conditioned not to cross one another, i.e., $L_1 \geq \cdots \geq L_N$. In this paper we provide sufficient conditions for convergence of a sequence of suitably scaled discrete Gibbsian line ensembles $f^N = (f_1^N,\dots,f_N^N)$ as the number of curves $N$ tends to infinity. Assuming log-concavity and a KMT-type coupling for the random walk jump distribution, we prove that under mild control of the one-point marginals of the top curves with a global parabolic shift, the f…
We consider the ASEP and the stochastic six vertex model started with step initial data. After a long time, $T$, it is known that the one-point height function fluctuations for these systems are of order $T^{1/3}$. We prove the KPZ prediction of $T^{2/3}$ scaling in space. Namely, we prove tightness (and Brownian absolute continuity of all subsequential limits) as $T$ goes to infinity of the height function with spatial coordinate scaled by $T^{2/3}$ and fluctuations scaled by $T^{1/3}$. The starting point for proving these results is a connection discovered recently by Borodin-Bufetov-Wheeler…
We develop a black-box theory, which can be used to show that a sequence of Gibbsian line ensembles is tight, provided that the one-point marginals of the lowest labeled curves of the ensembles are tight and globally approximate an inverted parabola. Our theory is applicable under certain technical assumptions on the nature of the Gibbs property and the underlying random walk measure. As a particular application of our general framework we show that a certain sequence of Gibbsian line ensembles, which naturally arises in the log-gamma polymer, is tight in the ubiquitous KPZ class $1/3: 2/3$ sc…
We consider Canonical Gibbsian ensembles of Euler point vortices on the 2-dimensional torus or in a bounded domain of R 2 . We prove that under the Central Limit scaling of vortices intensities, and provided that the system has zero global space average in the bounded domain case (neutrality condition), the ensemble converges to the so-called Energy-Enstrophy Gaussian random distributions. This can be interpreted as describing Gaussian fluctuations around the mean field limit of vortices ensembles. The main argument consists in proving convergence of partition functions of vortices and Gaussia…
In this paper we introduce a framework to prove tightness of a sequence of discrete Gibbsian line ensembles $\mathcal{L}^N = \{\mathcal{L}_k^N(x), k \in \mathbb{N}, x \in \frac{1}{N}\mathbb{Z}\}$, which is a collection of countable random curves. The sequence of discrete line ensembles $\mathcal{L}^N$ we consider enjoys a resampling invariance property, which we call $(H^N,H^{RW,N})$-Gibbs property. We also assume that $\mathcal{L}^N$ satisfies technical assumptions A1-A4 on $(H^N,H^{RW,N})$ and the assumption that the lowest labeled curve with a parabolic shift, $\mathcal{L}_1^N(x) + \frac{x^…
We consider the Mean Field limit of Gibbsian ensembles of 2-dimensional point vortices on the torus. It is a classical result that in such limit correlations functions converge to 1, that is, point vortices decorrelate: we compute the rate at which this convergence takes place by means of Gaussian integration techniques, inspired by the correspondence between the 2-dimensional Coulomb gas and the Sine-Gordon Euclidean field theory.
We prove tightness and limiting Brownian-Gibbs description for line ensembles of non-colliding Brownian bridges above a hard wall, which are subject to geometrically growing self-potentials of tilted area type. Statistical properties of the resulting ensemble are very different from that of non-colliding Brownian bridges without self-potentials. The model itself was introduced in order to mimic level lines of (2+1)-dimensional discrete Solid-On-Solid random interfaces above a hard wall.
We study the linear statistics of the circular $β$-ensemble with a Stein's method argument, where the exchangeable pair is generated through circular Dyson Brownian motion. This generalizes previous results obtained in such a way for the CUE and provides a novel approach for studying linear statistics of $β$-ensembles. This approach allows studying simultaneously a collection of linear statistics whose number grows with the dimension of the ensemble. Also this approach requires estimating only low order moments of the linear statistics.
The Airy line ensemble is a positive-integer indexed system of random continuous curves whose finite dimensional distributions are given by the multi-line Airy process. It is a natural object in the KPZ universality class: for example, its highest curve, the Airy$_2$ process, describes after the subtraction of a parabola the limiting law of the scaled energy of a geodesic running from the origin to a variable point on an anti-diagonal line in such problems as Poissonian last passage percolation. The ensemble of curves resulting from the Airy line ensemble after the subtraction of the same para…
We show that the squared maximal height of the top path among $N$ non-intersecting Brownian bridges starting and ending at the origin is distributed as the top eigenvalue of a random matrix drawn from the Laguerre Orthogonal Ensemble. This result can be thought of as a discrete version of K. Johansson's result that the supremum of the Airy$_2$ process minus a parabola has the Tracy-Widom GOE distribution, and as such it provides an explanation for how this distribution arises in models belonging to the KPZ universality class with flat initial data. The result can be recast in terms of the prob…
Consider N Brownian bridges B_i:[-N,N] -> R, B_i(-N) = B_i(N) = 0, 1 <= i <= N, conditioned not to intersect. The edge-scaling limit of this system is obtained by taking a limit as N -> infinity of these curves scaled around (0,2^{1/2} N) horizontally by a factor of N^{2/3} and vertically by N^{1/3}. If a parabola is added to each limit curve, an x-translation invariant process sometimes called the multi-line Airy process is obtained. We prove the existence of a version of this process (which we call the Airy line ensemble) in which curves are a.s. everywhere continuous and non-intersecting. T…
We access the edge of Gaussian beta ensembles with one spike by analyzing high powers of the associated tridiagonal matrix models. In the classical cases beta=1, 2, 4, this corresponds to studying the fluctuations of the largest eigenvalues of additive rank one perturbations of the GOE/GUE/GSE random matrices. In the infinite-dimensional limit, we arrive at a one-parameter family of random Feynman-Kac type semigroups, which features the stochastic Airy semigroup of Gorin and Shkolnikov [13] as an extreme case. Our analysis also provides Feynman-Kac formulas for the spiked stochastic Airy opera…
For general $β\geq 1$, we consider Dyson Brownian motion at equilibrium and prove convergence of the extremal particles to an ensemble of continuous sample paths in the limit $N \to \infty$. For each fixed time, this ensemble is distributed as the Airy$_β$ random point field. We prove that the increments of the limiting process are locally Brownian. When $β>1$ we prove that after subtracting a Brownian motion, the sample paths are almost surely locally $r$-H{ö}lder for any $r<1-(1+β)^{-1}$. Furthermore for all $β\geq 1$ we show that the limiting process solves an SDE in a weak sense. When $β=2…
The Airy line ensemble is a central object in random matrix theory and last passage percolation defined by a determinantal formula. The goal of this paper is to provide a set of tools which allow for precise probabilistic analysis of the Airy line ensemble. The two main theorems are a representation in terms of independent Brownian bridges connecting a fine grid of points, and a modulus of continuity result for all lines. Along the way, we give tail bounds and moduli of continuity for nonintersecting Brownian ensembles, and a quick proof of tightness for Dyson's Brownian motion converging to t…
We study the ultrametric random matrix ensemble, whose independent entries have variances decaying exponentially in the metric induced by the tree topology on $\mathbb{N}$, and map out the entire localization regime in terms of eigenfunction localization and Poisson statistics. Our results complement existing works on complete delocalization and random matrix universality, thereby proving the existence of a phase transition in this model. In the simpler case of the Rosenzweig-Porter model, the analysis yields a complete characterization of the transition in the local statistics. The proofs are…
The goal of this paper is to establish a relation between characteristic polynomials of $N\times N$ GUE random matrices $\mathcal{H}$ as $N\to\infty$, and Gaussian processes with logarithmic correlations. We introduce a regularized version of fractional Brownian motion with zero Hurst index, which is a Gaussian process with stationary increments and logarithmic increment structure. Then we prove that this process appears as a limit of $D_N(z)=-\log|\det(\mathcal{H}-zI)|$ on mesoscopic scales as $N\to\infty$. By employing a Fourier integral representation, we use this to prove a continuous anal…
We investigate the construction of diffusions consisting of infinitely numerous Brownian particles moving in $\mathbb{R}^d$ and interacting via logarithmic functions (two-dimensional Coulomb potentials). These potentials are very strong and act over a long range in nature. The associated equilibrium states are no longer Gibbs measures. We present general results for the construction of such diffusions and, as applications thereof, construct two typical interacting Brownian motions with logarithmic interaction potentials, namely the Dyson model in infinite dimensions and Ginibre interacting Bro…
The two-dimensional Brownian loop-soup is a Poissonian random collection of loops in a planar domain with an intensity parameter c. When c is not greater than 1, we show that the outer boundaries of the loop clusters are disjoint simple loops (when c>1, there is almost surely only one cluster) that satisfy certain conformal restriction axioms. We prove various results about loop-soups, cluster sizes, and the c=1 phase transition. Combining this with the results of another paper of ours on the Markovian characterization of simple conformal loop ensembles (CLE), this proves that these outer boun…
This paper seeks a quantitative comparison between the curves in the KPZ line ensemble [CH16] and a standard Brownian bridge under the $t^{1/3}$ vertical and $t^{2/3}$ horizontal scaling. The estimate we obtained is parallel to the one established in [Ham1], where the Airy line ensemble was studied. Our main tool is the soft Brownian Gibbs property enjoyed by the KPZ line ensemble. In view of the Gibbs property, the KPZ line ensemble differs from the Airy line ensemble mainly due to the intersecting nature of its curves, which results in the main technical difficulty in this paper. We develop …
The perturbed GUE corners ensemble is the joint distribution of eigenvalues of all principal submatrices of a matrix $G+\mathrm{diag}(\mathbf{a})$, where $G$ is the random matrix from the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE), and $\mathrm{diag}(\mathbf{a})$ is a fixed diagonal matrix. We introduce Markov transitions based on exponential jumps of eigenvalues, and show that their successive application is equivalent in distribution to a deterministic shift of the matrix. This result also leads to a new distributional symmetry for a family of reflected Brownian motions with drifts coming from an arith…
In this paper, we establish the ergodicity of the Airy line ensemble. This shows that it is the only candidate for Conjecture 3.2 in [3], regarding the classification of ergodic line ensembles satisfying a certain Brownian Gibbs property after a parabolic shift.
We study $n$ non-intersecting Brownian motions, corresponding to the eigenvalues of an $n\times n$ Hermitian Brownian motion. At the boundary of their limit shape we find that only three universal processes can arise: the Pearcey process close to merging points, the Airy line ensemble at edges and a novel determinantal process describing the transition from the Pearcey process to the Airy line ensemble. The three cases are distinguished by a remarkably simple integral condition. Our results hold under very mild assumptions, in particular we do not require any kind of convergence of the initial…
We study the distribution of the maximal height of the outermost path in the model of $N$ nonintersecting Brownian motions on the half-line as $N\to \infty$, showing that it converges in the proper scaling to the Tracy-Widom distribution for the largest eigenvalue of the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble. This is as expected from the viewpoint that the maximal height of the outermost path converges to the maximum of the $\textrm{Airy}_2$ process minus a parabola. Our proof is based on Riemann-Hilbert analysis of a system of discrete orthogonal polynomials with a Gaussian weight in the double scalin…
We show that the transition probability of the Markoc chain $(G(j,1),...,G(j,n))_{j\ge 1}$, where the $G(i,j)'s$ are certain directed last-passage times, is given by a determinant of a special form. An analogous formula has recently been obtained by Warren in a Brownian motion model. Furthermore we demonstrate that this formula leads to the Meixner ensemble when we compute the distribution function for $G(m,n)$. We also obtain the Fredholm determinant representation of this distribution, where the kernel has a double contour integral representation.
We study the line ensembles of non-crossing Brownian bridges above a hard wall, each tilted by the area of the region below it with geometrically growing pre-factors. This model, which mimics the level lines of the $(2+1)$D SOS model above a hard wall, was studied in two works from 2019 by Caputo, Ioffe and Wachtel. In those works, the tightness of the law of the top $k$ paths, for any fixed $k$, was established under either zero or free boundary conditions, which in the former setting implied the existence of a limit via a monotonicity argument. Here we address the open problem of a limit und…
We show that Sine$_β$, the bulk limit of the Gaussian $β$-ensembles is the spectrum of a self-adjoint random differential operator \[ f\to 2 {R_t^{-1}} \left[ \begin{array}{cc} 0 &-\tfrac{d}{dt} \tfrac{d}{dt} &0 \end{array} \right] f, \qquad f:[0,1)\to \mathbb R^2, \] where $R_t$ is the positive definite matrix representation of hyperbolic Brownian motion with variance $4/β$ in logarithmic time. The result connects the Montgomery-Dyson conjecture about the Sine$_2$ process and the non-trivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function, the Hilbert-Pólya conjecture and de Brange's attempt to prove the …
We show that the Dyson Brownian Motion exhibits local universality after a very short time assuming that local rigidity and level repulsion hold. These conditions are verified, hence bulk spectral universality is proven, for a large class of Wigner-like matrices, including deformed Wigner ensembles and ensembles with non-stochastic variance matrices whose limiting densities differ from the Wigner semicircle law.
Consider a system of $N$ non-intersecting Brownian bridges in $[0,1]$, and let $\mathcal M_N(p)$ be the maximal height attained by the top path in the interval $[0,p]$, $p\in[0,1]$. It is known that, under a suitable rescaling, the distribution of $\mathcal M_N(p)$ converges, as $N\to\infty$, to a one-parameter family of distributions interpolating between the Tracy-Widom distributions for the Gaussian Orthogonal and Unitary Ensembles (corresponding, respectively, to $p\to1$ and $p\to0$). It is also known that, for fixed $N$, $\mathcal M_N(1)$ is distributed as the top eigenvalue of a random m…
The random walk loop soup is a Poissonian ensemble of lattice loops; it has been extensively studied because of its connections to the discrete Gaussian free field, but was originally introduced by Lawler and Trujillo Ferreras as a discrete version of the Brownian loop soup of Lawler and Werner, a conformally invariant Poissonian ensemble of planar loops with deep connections to conformal loop ensembles (CLEs) and the Schramm-Loewner evolution (SLE). Lawler and Trujillo Ferreras showed that, roughly speaking, in the continuum scaling limit, ``large'' lattice loops from the random walk loop sou…
Let $\{U^N_t\}_{t\ge 0}$ be a standard Brownian motion on $\mathbb{U}(N)$. For fixed $N\in\mathbb{N}$ and $t>0$, we give explicit bounds on the $L_1$-Wasserstein distance of the empirical spectral measure of $U^N_t$ to both the ensemble-averaged spectral measure and to the large-$N$ limiting measure identified by Biane. We are then able to use these bounds to control the rate of convergence of paths of the measures on compact time intervals. The proofs use tools developed by the first author to study convergence rates of the classical random matrix ensembles, as well as recent estimates for th…
For each $t\geq 1$ we construct an $\mathbf{N}$-indexed ensemble of random continuous curves with three properties: 1. The lowest indexed curve is distributed as the time $t$ Hopf-Cole solution to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) stochastic PDE with narrow wedge initial data; 2. The entire ensemble satisfies a resampling invariance which we call the $\mathbf{H}$-Brownian Gibbs property (with $\mathbf{H}(x)=e^{x}$); 3. Increments of the lowest indexed curve, when centered by $-t/24$ and scaled down vertically by $t^{1/3}$ and horizontally by $t^{2/3}$, remain uniformly absolutely continuous (i.e. …
We consider an ensemble of $n$ nonintersecting Brownian particles on the unit circle with diffusion parameter $n^{-1/2}$, which are conditioned to begin at the same point and to return to that point after time $T$, but otherwise not to intersect. There is a critical value of $T$ which separates the subcritical case, in which it is vanishingly unlikely that the particles wrap around the circle, and the supercritical case, in which particles may wrap around the circle. In this paper, we show that in the subcritical and critical cases the probability that the total winding number is zero is almos…
Experimental methods based on single particle tracking (SPT) are being increasingly employed in the physical and biological sciences, where nanoscale objects are visualized with high temporal and spatial resolution. SPT can probe interactions between a particle and its environment but the price to be paid is the absence of ensemble averaging and a consequent lack of statistics. Here we address the benchmark question of how to accurately extract the diffusion constant of one single Brownian trajectory. We analyze a class of estimators based on weighted functionals of the square displacement. Fo…
In this paper, we construct the Bessel line ensemble, a countable collection of continuous random curves. This line ensemble is stationary under horizontal shifts with the Bessel point process as its one-time marginal. Its finite dimensional distributions are given by the extended Bessel kernel. Furthermore, it enjoys a novel resampling invariance with respect to non-intersecting squared Bessel bridges. The Bessel line ensemble is constructed by extracting the hard edge scaling limit of a collection of independent squared Bessel processes starting at the origin and never being conditioned to i…
