Audio-Visual Scene-Aware Dialog (AVSD) is a task to generate responses when chatting about a given video, which is organized as a track of the 8th Dialog System Technology Challenge (DSTC8). To solve the task, we propose a universal multimodal transformer and introduce the multi-task learning method to learn joint representations among different modalities as well as generate informative and fluent responses. Our method extends the natural language generation pre-trained model to multimodal dialogue generation task. Our system achieves the best performance in both objective and subjective evaluations in the challenge.

Lack of external knowledge makes empathetic dialogue systems difficult to perceive implicit emotions and learn emotional interactions from limited dialogue history. To address the above problems, we propose to leverage external knowledge, including commonsense knowledge and emotional lexical knowledge, to explicitly understand and express emotions in empathetic dialogue generation. We first enrich the dialogue history by jointly interacting with external knowledge and construct an emotional context graph. Then we learn emotional context representations from the knowledge-enriched emotional con…
Audio Visual Scene-aware Dialog (AVSD) is a task to generate responses when discussing about a given video. The previous state-of-the-art model shows superior performance for this task using Transformer-based architecture. However, there remain some limitations in learning better representation of modalities. Inspired by Neural Machine Translation (NMT), we propose the Transformer-based Modal Translator (TMT) to learn the representations of the source modal sequence by translating the source modal sequence to the related target modal sequence in a supervised manner. Based on Multimodal Transfo…
We propose CASPER (ChAt, Shift and PERform), a novel dialog system consisting of three types of dialog models: chatter, shifter, and performer. Shifter, which is designed for topic switching, enables a seamless flow of dialog from open-domain chat- to task-oriented dialog. In a user study, CASPER gave a better impression in terms of naturalness of response, lack of forced topic switching, and satisfaction compared with a baseline dialog system trained in an end-to-end manner. In an ablation study, we found that naturalness of response, dialog satisfaction, and task-elicitation rate improved co…

In a dialogue system pipeline, a natural language generation (NLG) unit converts the dialogue direction and content to a corresponding natural language realization. A recent trend for dialogue systems is to first pre-train on large datasets and then fine-tune in a supervised manner using datasets annotated with application-specific features. Though novel behaviours can be learned from custom annotation, the required effort severely bounds the quantity of the training set, and the application-specific nature limits the reuse. In light of the recent success of data-driven approaches, we propose …

In previous work, we have proposed the Audio-Visual Scene-Aware Dialog (AVSD) task, collected an AVSD dataset, developed AVSD technologies, and hosted an AVSD challenge track at both the 7th and 8th Dialog System Technology Challenges (DSTC7, DSTC8). In these challenges, the best-performing systems relied heavily on human-generated descriptions of the video content, which were available in the datasets but would be unavailable in real-world applications. To promote further advancements for real-world applications, we proposed a third AVSD challenge, at DSTC10, with two modifications: 1) the hu…
Target-guided response generation enables dialogue systems to smoothly transition a conversation from a dialogue context toward a target sentence. Such control is useful for designing dialogue systems that direct a conversation toward specific goals, such as creating non-obtrusive recommendations or introducing new topics in the conversation. In this paper, we introduce a new technique for target-guided response generation, which first finds a bridging path of commonsense knowledge concepts between the source and the target, and then uses the identified bridging path to generate transition res…

Understanding dynamic scenes and dialogue contexts in order to converse with users has been challenging for multimodal dialogue systems. The 8-th Dialog System Technology Challenge (DSTC8) proposed an Audio Visual Scene-Aware Dialog (AVSD) task, which contains multiple modalities including audio, vision, and language, to evaluate how dialogue systems understand different modalities and response to users. In this paper, we proposed a multi-step joint-modality attention network (JMAN) based on recurrent neural network (RNN) to reason on videos. Our model performs a multi-step attention mechanism…

There have been many attempts to build multimodal dialog systems that can respond to a question about given audio-visual information, and the representative task for such systems is the Audio Visual Scene-Aware Dialog (AVSD). Most conventional AVSD models adopt the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-based video feature extractor to understand visual information. While a CNN tends to obtain both temporally and spatially local information, global information is also crucial for boosting video understanding because AVSD requires long-term temporal visual dependency and whole visual information. I…
The recently proposed audio-visual scene-aware dialog task paves the way to a more data-driven way of learning virtual assistants, smart speakers and car navigation systems. However, very little is known to date about how to effectively extract meaningful information from a plethora of sensors that pound the computational engine of those devices. Therefore, in this paper, we provide and carefully analyze a simple baseline for audio-visual scene-aware dialog which is trained end-to-end. Our method differentiates in a data-driven manner useful signals from distracting ones using an attention mec…

Dialog systems need to understand dynamic visual scenes in order to have conversations with users about the objects and events around them. Scene-aware dialog systems for real-world applications could be developed by integrating state-of-the-art technologies from multiple research areas, including: end-to-end dialog technologies, which generate system responses using models trained from dialog data; visual question answering (VQA) technologies, which answer questions about images using learned image features; and video description technologies, in which descriptions/captions are generated from…

Developing Video-Grounded Dialogue Systems (VGDS), where a dialogue is conducted based on visual and audio aspects of a given video, is significantly more challenging than traditional image or text-grounded dialogue systems because (1) feature space of videos span across multiple picture frames, making it difficult to obtain semantic information; and (2) a dialogue agent must perceive and process information from different modalities (audio, video, caption, etc.) to obtain a comprehensive understanding. Most existing work is based on RNNs and sequence-to-sequence architectures, which are not v…
Spoken dialogue systems that assist users to solve complex tasks such as movie ticket booking have become an emerging research topic in artificial intelligence and natural language processing areas. With a well-designed dialogue system as an intelligent personal assistant, people can accomplish certain tasks more easily via natural language interactions. Today there are several virtual intelligent assistants in the market; however, most systems only focus on textual or vocal interaction. In this paper, we present HUMBO, a system aiming at generating dialogue responses and simultaneously synthe…
This paper introduces the Eighth Dialog System Technology Challenge. In line with recent challenges, the eighth edition focuses on applying end-to-end dialog technologies in a pragmatic way for multi-domain task-completion, noetic response selection, audio visual scene-aware dialog, and schema-guided dialog state tracking tasks. This paper describes the task definition, provided datasets, and evaluation set-up for each track. We also summarize the results of the submitted systems to highlight the overall trends of the state-of-the-art technologies for the tasks.
Visual question answering and visual dialogue tasks have been increasingly studied in the multimodal field towards more practical real-world scenarios. A more challenging task, audio visual scene-aware dialogue (AVSD), is proposed to further advance the technologies that connect audio, vision, and language, which introduces temporal video information and dialogue interactions between a questioner and an answerer. This paper proposes an intuitive mechanism that fuses features and attention in multiple stages in order to well integrate multimodal features, and the results demonstrate its capabil…

With the development of the Internet, more and more people get accustomed to online shopping. When communicating with customer service, users may express their requirements by means of text, images, and videos, which precipitates the need for understanding these multimodal information for automatic customer service systems. Images usually act as discriminators for product models, or indicators of product failures, which play important roles in the E-commerce scenario. On the other hand, detailed information provided by the images is limited, and typically, customer service systems cannot under…

Given an input video, its associated audio, and a brief caption, the audio-visual scene aware dialog (AVSD) task requires an agent to indulge in a question-answer dialog with a human about the audio-visual content. This task thus poses a challenging multi-modal representation learning and reasoning scenario, advancements into which could influence several human-machine interaction applications. To solve this task, we introduce a semantics-controlled multi-modal shuffled Transformer reasoning framework, consisting of a sequence of Transformer modules, each taking a modality as input and produci…

We introduce dGSLM, the first "textless" model able to generate audio samples of naturalistic spoken dialogues. It uses recent work on unsupervised spoken unit discovery coupled with a dual-tower transformer architecture with cross-attention trained on 2000 hours of two-channel raw conversational audio (Fisher dataset) without any text or labels. We show that our model is able to generate speech, laughter and other paralinguistic signals in the two channels simultaneously and reproduces more naturalistic and fluid turn-taking compared to a text-based cascaded model.
Training dialog policies for speech-based virtual assistants requires a plethora of conversational data. The data collection phase is often expensive and time consuming due to human involvement. To address this issue, a common solution is to build user simulators for data generation. For the successful deployment of the trained policies into real world domains, it is vital that the user simulator mimics realistic conditions. In particular, speech-based assistants are heavily affected by automatic speech recognition and language understanding errors, hence the user simulator should be able to s…

Understanding audio-visual content and the ability to have an informative conversation about it have both been challenging areas for intelligent systems. The Audio Visual Scene-aware Dialog (AVSD) challenge, organized as a track of the Dialog System Technology Challenge 7 (DSTC7), proposes a combined task, where a system has to answer questions pertaining to a video given a dialogue with previous question-answer pairs and the video itself. We propose for this task a hierarchical encoder-decoder model which computes a multi-modal embedding of the dialogue context. It first embeds the dialogue h…
In this work, we define barge-in verification as a supervised learning task where audio-only information is used to classify user spoken dialogue into true and false barge-ins. Following the success of pre-trained models, we use low-level speech representations from a self-supervised representation learning model for our downstream classification task. Further, we propose a novel technique to infuse lexical information directly into speech representations to improve the domain-specific language information implicitly learned during pre-training. Experiments conducted on spoken dialog data show…

Audio-Visual Scene-Aware Dialog (AVSD) is an extension from Video Question Answering (QA) whereby the dialogue agent is required to generate natural language responses to address user queries and carry on conversations. This is a challenging task as it consists of video features of multiple modalities, including text, visual, and audio features. The agent also needs to learn semantic dependencies among user utterances and system responses to make coherent conversations with humans. In this work, we describe our submission to the AVSD track of the 8th Dialogue System Technology Challenge. We ad…
