Hybridized energies in rectangular nanoparticles may display an unusual behaviour. In some cases, they get separated with increasing distance between the particles. In this note this phenomenon is explained by an analytic method.
Plasmon hybridization between closely spaced nanoparticles yields new hybrid modes not found in individual constituents, allowing for the engineering of resonance properties and field enhancement capabilities of metallic nanostructure. Experimental verifications of plasmon hybridization have been thus far mostly limited to optical frequencies, as metals cannot support surface plasmons at longer wavelengths. Here, we introduce the concept of 'spoof plasmon hybridization' in highly conductive metal structures and investigate experimentally the interaction of localized surface plasmon resonances …
Hybridization of surface-plasmon and dielectric waveguide whispering-gallery modes are demonstrated in a semiconductor microdisk laser cavity of sub-wavelength proportions. A metal layer is deposited on top of the semiconductor microdisk, the radius of which is systematically varied to enable mode hybridization between surface-plasmon and dielectric modes. The anti-crossing behavior of the two cavity mode types is experimentally observed via photoluminescence spectroscopy and optically pumped lasing action at a wavelength of 1.3 micron is achieved at room temperature.
Within our recently proposed generalized nonlocal optical response (GNOR) model, we revisit the fundamental problem of an optically excited plasmonic dimer. The dimer consists of two identical cylinders separated by a nanometre-sized gap. We consider the transition from separated dimers via touching dimers to finally overlapping dimers. In particular, we focus on the touching case, showing a fundamental limit on the hybridization of the bonding plasmon modes due to nonlocality. Using transformation optics we determine a simple analytical equation for the resonance energies of the bonding plasm…
The coupling of resonant light and surface plasmons in metal layer coated optical microcavities results in the formation of hybrid photon-plasmon modes. Here, we comprehensively investigate the hybridization mechanism of photon-plasmon modes based on opto-plasmonic microtubular cavities. By changing the cavity structure and the metal layer thickness, weakly, moderately and strongly hybridized resonant modes are demonstrated depending on the photon-plasmon coupling strength. An effective potential approach is applied to illustrate the hybridization of photon-plasmon modes relying on the competi…
Surface plasmon resonances of metallic nanostructures offer great opportunities to guide and manipulate light on the nanoscale. In the design of novel plasmonic devices, a central topic is to clarify the intricate relationship between the resonance spectrum and the geometry of the nanostructure. Despite the many advances, the design becomes quite challenging when the desired spectrum is highly complex. Here we develop a new theoretical model for surface plasmons of interacting nanoparticles to reduce the complexity of the design process significantly. Our model is developed by combining plasmo…
The plasmon resonances (modes) of a metal nanostructure can be defined as a dipole, a quadrupole, or high-order modes depending on the surface charge distribution induced by the incident field. In a non-symmetrical environment or clusters, the modes can hybridize and exhibit different behavior and properties. In this work, we study experimentally and numerically the substrate-induced hybridization of plasmonic modes of a silver nanocylinder. The applications of plasmonic nanoparticles such as refractive index sensing and enhanced spectroscopies often rely on the sustained mode spectral positio…
We study the light scattering by plasmonic and dielectric symmetric trimers to investigate the existence of polarization-independent Fano resonances. Plasmonic hybridization theory is revealed to hide simple physics, and we instead provide a simplified model for hybridization to derive a plasmonic trimer's eigenmodes analytically. This approach is demonstrated to accurately recreate full wave simulations of plasmonic trimers and their Fano resonances. We are subsequently able to deduce the grounds for modal interference in plasmonic trimers and the related formation of Fano resonances. However…
The arrangement of plasmonic nanoparticles in a non-symmetrical environment can feature the far-field and/or near-field interactions depending on the distance between the objects. In this work, we study the hybridization of three intrinsic plasmonic modes (dipolar, quadrupolar and hexapolar modes) sustained by one elliptical aluminium nanocylinder, as well as behavior of the hybridized modes when the nanoparticles are organized in array or when the refractive index of the surrounding medium is changed. The position and the intensity of these hybridized modes were shown to be affected by the ne…
We propose a scheme to study the nonlinear propagation properties of nonlinear surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in a three level $Λ$ type electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) system with modulation of a rectangular barrier. Based on the multi scale method, the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) describing nonlinear propagation of SPPs is derived, and the rectangular barrier affecting propagation of nonlinear SPPs is provided by an off-resonance Stark field. For the single nonlinear SPPs incident case, by adjusting the height and half width of the barrier, we can realize transmiss…
Sharp metal corners and tips support plasmons localized on the scale of the curvature radius -- superlocalized plasmons. We analyze plasmonic properties of nanoparticles with small and sharp corner- and tip-shaped surface perturbations in terms of hybridization of the superlocalized plasmons, which frequencies are determined by the perturbations shape, and the ordinary plasmons localized on the whole particle. When the frequency of a superlocalized plasmon gets close to that of the ordinary plasmon, their strong hybridization occurs and facilitates excitation of an optical hot-spot near the co…

Pyramidal metamaterials are currently developed for ultra-broadband absorbers. They consist of periodic arrays of alternating metal/dielectric layers forming truncated square-based pyramids. The metallic layers of increasing lengths play the role of vertically and, to a less extent, laterally coupled plasmonic resonators. Based on detailed numerical simulations, we demonstrate that plasmon hybridization between such resonators helps in achieving ultra-broadband absorption. The dipolar modes of individual resonators are shown to be prominent in the electromagnetic coupling mechanism. Lateral co…
The plasmon hybridization theory is based on a quasi-electrostatic approximation of the Maxwell's equations. It does not take into account magnetic interactions, retardation effects, and radiation losses. Magnetic interactions play a dominant role in the scattering from dielectric nanoparticles. The retardation effects play a fundamental role in the coupling of the modes with the incident radiation and in determining their radiative strength; their exclusion may lead to erroneous predictions of the excited modes and of the scattered power spectra. Radiation losses may lead to a significant bro…
We reveal new aspects of the interaction between plasmons and phonons in 2D materials that go beyond a mere shift and increase in plasmon width due to coupling to either intrinsic vibrational modes of the material or phonons in a supporting substrate. More precisely, we predict strong plasmon splitting due to this coupling, resulting in a characteristic avoided crossing scheme. We base our results on a computationally efficient approach consisting in including many-body interactions through the electron self-energy. We specify this formalism for a description of plasmons based upon a tight-bin…
With the continuous emergence of molecular and cluster devices or systems, the relationship between the plasmonic properties of multiple clusters and molecular interactions and the properties of the original single cluster or molecule becomes more and more important. Similar to plasmonic nanoparticle hybridization, there is also a hybrid phenomenon between two molecules with plasmon excitation modes. Using linear response time-dependent density functional theory (LR-TDDFT) and real-time propagation time-dependent density functional theory (RT-TDDFT) and combining the plasmonicity index (PI) an…
Nanostructured graphene on SiO2 substrates pave the way for enhanced light-matter interactions and explorations of strong plasmon-phonon hybridization in the mid-infrared regime. Unprecedented large-area graphene nanodot and antidot optical arrays are fabricated by nanosphere lithography, with structural control down to the sub-100 nanometer regime. The interaction between graphene plasmon modes and the substrate phonons is experimentally demonstrated and structural control is used to map out the hybridization of plasmons and phonons, showing coupling energies of the order 20 meV. Our findings…
Here we demonstrate a novel smart magnetoplasmonic heterostructure for efficient control of light. It consists of gold nanoparticles embedded in a thin magnetic film covered with a gold layer pierces with periodic nanoslit array. Unique feature of the proposed structure is that it supports four different types of optical modes in the same frequency range including localized and propagating surface plasmons along with waveguide modes. A peculiar magneto-optical response appears at the frequencies of the mode hybridization. The most prominent result comes from hybridization of the localized and …
Surface lattice resonance (SLR) is the collective excitation of nanoparticle resonances arising from the hybridization between localized surface plasmons (LSPs) and propagating Rayleigh anomalies (RAs). When comparing with the corresponding LSPs, SLRs exhibit much higher quality factor. In fact, as the quality factor depends on the constituting resonances and their hybridization, how one can parametrize it in an analytic form is an important issue. We have studied the SLRs arising from 2D Au monopartite nanoparticle arrays by angle- and polarization-resolved reflectivity spectroscopy, temporal…
When two or more metallic nanoparticles are in close proximity, their plasmonic modes may interact through the near field, leading to additional resonances of the coupled system or to shifts of their resonant frequencies. This process is analogous to atom-hybridization, as had been proposed by Gersten and Nitzan and modeled by Nordlander et al. The coupling between plasmonic modes can be in-phase (symmetric) or out-of-phase (anti-symmetric), reflecting correspondingly, the "bonding" and "anti-bonding" nature of such configurations. Since the incoming light redistributes the charge distribution…
Plasmon coupling and hybridization in complex nanostructures constitutes a fertile playground for controlling light at the nanoscale. Here, we present a semi-analytical model to describe the emergence of hybrid plasmon modes guided along 2D nano-slits. In particular, we find two new coupled plasmonic resonances arising from symmetric and antisymmetric hybridizations of the edge plasmons of the constituent half-sheets. These give rise to an antibonding and a bonding mode, lying above and below the energy of the bare edge plasmon. Our treatment is notably generic, being able to account for slits…
We present theoretical studies of the nature of the collective plasmon resonances of surfaces upon which ordered lattices of spherical metallic particles have been deposited. The collective plasmon modes, excited by light incident on the surface, are explored for both square and rectangular lattices of particles. The particular resonances excited by an incident beam of light depend on the frequency, polarization, and angles of incidence. We show that one can create surfaces for which the polarization of the reflected light is frequency dependent. The form of the polarization dependent spectra …
We present an analytic theory for the optical properties of ellipsoidal plasmonic particles covered by anisotropic molecular layers. The theory is applied to the case of a prolate spheroid covered by chromophores oriented parallel and perpendicular to the metal surface. For the case that the molecular layer resonance frequency is close to being degenerate with one of the particle plasmon resonances strong hybridization between the two resonances occur. Approximate analytic expressions for the hybridized resonance frequencies, their extinction cross section peak heights and widths are derived. …
This study investigated spectral changes in the absorption cross-sections of single strong coupling systems composed of single silver nanoparticle dimers and a few dye molecules during the quenching of surface-enhanced resonant Raman scattering (SERRS). The absorption cross-section was obtained by subtracting the scattering cross-section from an extinction cross-section. The spectral changes in these cross-sections were evaluated using a classical hybridization model composed of a plasmon and a molecular exciton including a molecular multi-level property. The changes in the scattering and exti…
We present an ab-initio study of the hybridization of localized surface plasmons in a metal nanoparticle dimer. The atomic structure, which is often neglected in theoretical studies of quantum nanoplasmonics, has a strong impact on the optical absorption properties when sub-nanometric gaps between the nanoparticles are considered. We demonstrate that this influences the hybridization of optical resonances of the dimer, and leads to significantly smaller electric field enhancements as compared to the standard jellium model. In addition we show that the corrugation of the metal surface at a micr…
We develop a quantum theory of plasmon polaritons in chains of metallic nanoparticles, describing both near- and far-field interparticle distances, by including plasmon-photon Umklapp processes. Taking into account the retardation effects of the long-range dipole-dipole interaction between the nanoparticles, which are induced by the coupling of the plasmonic degrees of freedom to the photonic continuum, we reveal the polaritonic nature of the normal modes of the system. We compute the dispersion relation and radiative linewidth, as well as the group velocities of the eigenmodes, and compare ou…
