Hybridization of surface-plasmon and dielectric waveguide whispering-gallery modes are demonstrated in a semiconductor microdisk laser cavity of sub-wavelength proportions. A metal layer is deposited on top of the semiconductor microdisk, the radius of which is systematically varied to enable mode hybridization between surface-plasmon and dielectric modes. The anti-crossing behavior of the two cavity mode types is experimentally observed via photoluminescence spectroscopy and optically pumped lasing action at a wavelength of 1.3 micron is achieved at room temperature.
Hybridized energies in rectangular nanoparticles may display an unusual behaviour. In some cases, they get separated with increasing distance between the particles. In this note this phenomenon is explained by an analytic method.
Surface plasmon resonances of metallic nanostructures offer great opportunities to guide and manipulate light on the nanoscale. In the design of novel plasmonic devices, a central topic is to clarify the intricate relationship between the resonance spectrum and the geometry of the nanostructure. Despite the many advances, the design becomes quite challenging when the desired spectrum is highly complex. Here we develop a new theoretical model for surface plasmons of interacting nanoparticles to reduce the complexity of the design process significantly. Our model is developed by combining plasmo…
The plasmon resonances (modes) of a metal nanostructure can be defined as a dipole, a quadrupole, or high-order modes depending on the surface charge distribution induced by the incident field. In a non-symmetrical environment or clusters, the modes can hybridize and exhibit different behavior and properties. In this work, we study experimentally and numerically the substrate-induced hybridization of plasmonic modes of a silver nanocylinder. The applications of plasmonic nanoparticles such as refractive index sensing and enhanced spectroscopies often rely on the sustained mode spectral positio…
The arrangement of plasmonic nanoparticles in a non-symmetrical environment can feature the far-field and/or near-field interactions depending on the distance between the objects. In this work, we study the hybridization of three intrinsic plasmonic modes (dipolar, quadrupolar and hexapolar modes) sustained by one elliptical aluminium nanocylinder, as well as behavior of the hybridized modes when the nanoparticles are organized in array or when the refractive index of the surrounding medium is changed. The position and the intensity of these hybridized modes were shown to be affected by the ne…

Plasmonic resonators have drawn more attention due to the ability to confine light into subwavelength scale. However, they always suffer from a low quality (Q) factor owing to the intrinsic loss of metal. Here, we numerically propose a plasmonic resonator with ultra-high Q factor based on plasmonic metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide structures. The resonator consists of a disk cavity surrounded by a concentric ring cavity, possessing an ultra-small volume. Arising from the plasmon hybridization between plasmon modes in the disk and ring cavity, the induced bonding hybridized modes have ultr…
We derive and present systematic relationships between the analytical formulas for calculation of the localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPR) of some plasmonic nano-structures which we have categorized as simple. These relationships, including some new formulas, are summarized in a tree diagram which highlights the core-shell plasmons as the generators of solid and cavity plasmons. In addition, we show that the LSPR of complex structures can be reduced to that of simpler ones, using the LSPR of a nanorice as a case study, in the dipole limit. All the formulas were derived using a combinati…
Polaritons can provide strong optical field enhancement allowing to boost light-matter interaction. Here, we experimentally observe enhancement of mid-infrared second-harmonic generation (SHG) using grating-coupled surface phonon polaritons of the 6H-SiC surface. In our experiment, we measure the SHG along the polariton dispersion by changing the incidence angle of the excitation beam. We observe hybridization between the propagating surface phonon polaritons and localized plasmon resonances in the gold grating, evidenced by the modification of the polariton dispersion as we change the area ra…
The plasmon hybridization theory is based on a quasi-electrostatic approximation of the Maxwell's equations. It does not take into account magnetic interactions, retardation effects, and radiation losses. Magnetic interactions play a dominant role in the scattering from dielectric nanoparticles. The retardation effects play a fundamental role in the coupling of the modes with the incident radiation and in determining their radiative strength; their exclusion may lead to erroneous predictions of the excited modes and of the scattered power spectra. Radiation losses may lead to a significant bro…
With the continuous emergence of molecular and cluster devices or systems, the relationship between the plasmonic properties of multiple clusters and molecular interactions and the properties of the original single cluster or molecule becomes more and more important. Similar to plasmonic nanoparticle hybridization, there is also a hybrid phenomenon between two molecules with plasmon excitation modes. Using linear response time-dependent density functional theory (LR-TDDFT) and real-time propagation time-dependent density functional theory (RT-TDDFT) and combining the plasmonicity index (PI) an…
Strong coupling between a single quantum emitter and an electromagnetic mode is one of the key effects in quantum optics. In the cavity QED approach to plasmonics, strongly coupled systems are usually understood as single-transition emitters resonantly coupled to a single radiative plasmonic mode. However, plasmonic cavities also support non-radiative (or "dark") modes, which offer much higher coupling strengths. On the other hand, realistic quantum emitters often support multiple electronic transitions of various symmetry, which could overlap with higher order plasmonic transitions -- in the …
We investigate exemplary the longitudinal optical (LO) mode order in compounds with a plasmon or plasmon-like phonon mode and additional phonon modes. When the oscillator strength of the plasmon or plasmon-like mode is gradually increased, a reordering of the modes takes place. Since it is not possible in crystals with orthorhombic or higher symmetry that a LO mode crosses a transverse optical (TO) mode's position, this reordering takes place via mode hybridization. During this mode hybridization, the plasmon or plasmon-like LO mode gradually becomes the originally higher situated LO mode whil…
Peculiar ring gap modes on the surface of disk close to the metallic thin film are excited in the visible light regime. We apply plasmon hybridization method to illustrate the ring gap modes arising from the interaction between localized disk plasmons and continuum surface plasmons, which cannot be easily excited by the plane wave with polarization parallel to the film interface. In the coupled system, the hybrid modes energy and the surface charge distribution of nanoparticle are investigated both in simulation and hybridization method, showing consistence with each other. The excitation of r…
Here we demonstrate a novel smart magnetoplasmonic heterostructure for efficient control of light. It consists of gold nanoparticles embedded in a thin magnetic film covered with a gold layer pierces with periodic nanoslit array. Unique feature of the proposed structure is that it supports four different types of optical modes in the same frequency range including localized and propagating surface plasmons along with waveguide modes. A peculiar magneto-optical response appears at the frequencies of the mode hybridization. The most prominent result comes from hybridization of the localized and …
Surface lattice resonance (SLR) is the collective excitation of nanoparticle resonances arising from the hybridization between localized surface plasmons (LSPs) and propagating Rayleigh anomalies (RAs). When comparing with the corresponding LSPs, SLRs exhibit much higher quality factor. In fact, as the quality factor depends on the constituting resonances and their hybridization, how one can parametrize it in an analytic form is an important issue. We have studied the SLRs arising from 2D Au monopartite nanoparticle arrays by angle- and polarization-resolved reflectivity spectroscopy, temporal…
In recent years, the hybridization of hyperbolic van der Waals heterostructures with plasmonic two-dimensional nano-materials is one of the interesting research areas at THz frequencies due to the coupled features of the hybrid structure. This article investigates the propagation of tunable surface phonon-plasmon polaritons in grounded hybrid graphene-hexagonal Boron Nitride (hBN) heterostructures. An analytical model is presented for the proposed structure, by applying the boundary conditions for the electromagnetic components in the various regions, to derive an exact dispersion relation. Th…
Microwave absorption spectra of a single square of two-dimensional electrons (2DES) have been investigated using an optical detection technique. Fundamental dipole and harmonic quadrupole plasmon modes have been identified and compared to those in the disk geometry. In the square-shaped 2DES, a strong interaction is discovered between the neighboring plasmon modes, whereas no such hybridization is observed in the disk-shaped geometry. We establish a rigid theoretical platform to analytically describe the magneto-optical response of confined two-dimensional systems. The developed theory provide…
In nanoscale photonic devices, the demand for multifunctionality from metasurface 2D optics increases rapidly. To explore fine-tuning in the design metric, we reinvestigated the trapezoid shape copper metasurface with Finite-Difference Time-Domain simulation for efficiently using linearly polarized light for two different functionalities. From the plasmonic band structure, we see how the degree of asymmetry in geometry affects the efficient resonance coupling of the traveling plasmonic modes, along with different types of mode hybridization profiles related to the nanoantenna's geometric shape…
The hybridization of hyperbolic Polaritonics with THz Plasmonics has attracted immense attention due to its fascinating applications in this region. However, to effectively enhance the performance of these coupled modes, one way is the usage of smart materials in the heterostructures. Here, we introduce a symmetric graphene-based structure containing hexagonal Boron Nitride (hBN) layers, where two nonlinear layers have been utilized as claddings to improve the confinement of Hybrid Surface Phonon-Plasmon-Polaritons. A new analytical model is derived. A set of nonlinear equations are solved num…
This study investigated spectral changes in the absorption cross-sections of single strong coupling systems composed of single silver nanoparticle dimers and a few dye molecules during the quenching of surface-enhanced resonant Raman scattering (SERRS). The absorption cross-section was obtained by subtracting the scattering cross-section from an extinction cross-section. The spectral changes in these cross-sections were evaluated using a classical hybridization model composed of a plasmon and a molecular exciton including a molecular multi-level property. The changes in the scattering and exti…
The observation of the electrically tunable and highly confined plasmons in graphene has stimulated the exploration of interesting properties of plasmons in other two dimensional materials. Recently, hyperbolic plasmon resonance modes are observed in exfoliated WTe2 films, a type-II Weyl semimetal with layered structure, providing a platform for the assembly of plasmons with hyperbolicity and exotic topological properties. However, the plasmon modes were observed in relatively thick and small-area films, which restrict the tunability and application for plasmons. Here, large-area (~ cm) WTe2 f…
This work presents numerical and experimental results of plasmonic Metal-Insulator optical nano-cavities. The systems are composed of Silver as metal, polyvinylpyrrolidone or indium tin oxide or zinc oxide as insulator. The proposed nano-cavities exhibit extraordinary effects as colors changing in function of the incident/view angles, enhancement of the experimental real and imaginary parts of the pseudo dielectric constant, an extraordinary transmission of 50$\%$ and zero reflection for both polarizations at the resonant wavelengths. These results lead to the formation and propagation of surf…
Graphene plasmons have attracted significant attention due to their tunability, potentially long propagation lengths and ultracompact wavelengths. However, the latter characteristic imposes challenges to light-plasmon coupling in practical applications, generally requiring sophisticated coupling setups, extremely high doping levels and/or graphene nanostructuting close to the resolution limit of current lithography techniques. Here, we propose and theoretically demonstrate a method for alleviating such a technological strain through the use of a practical substrate whose low and negative diele…
