Kinetic-scale current sheets observed in the solar wind are frequently approximately force-free despite the fact that their plasma $β$ is of the order of one. In-situ measurements have recently shown that plasma density and temperature often vary across the current sheets, while the plasma pressure is approximately uniform. In many cases these density and temperature variations are asymmetric with respect to the center of the current sheet. To model these observations theoretically we develop in this paper equilibria of kinetic-scale force-free current sheets that have plasma density and temperature gradients. The models can also be useful for analysis of stability and dissipation of the current sheets in the solar wind.
In solar wind, magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) discontinuities are ubiquitous and often found to be at the origin of turbulence intermittency. They may also play a key role in the turbulence dissipation and heating of the solar wind. The tangential (TD) and rotational (RD) discontinuities are the two most important types of discontinuities. Recently, the connection between turbulence intermittency and proton thermodynamics has been being investigated observationally. Here we present numerical results from three-dimensional MHD simulation with pressure anisotropy and define new methods to identify an…
Using high resolution Cluster satellite observations, we show that the turbulent solar wind is populated by magnetic discontinuities at different scales, going from proton down to electron scales. The structure of these layers resembles the Harris equilibrium profile in plasmas. Using a multi-dimensional intermittency technique, we show that these structures are connected through the scales. Supported by numerical simulations of magnetic reconnection, we show that observations are consistent with a scenario where many current layers develop in turbulence, and where the outflow of these reconne…
The solar wind consists of charged particles ejected from the Sun into interplanetary space and towards Earth. Understanding the magnetic field of the solar wind is crucial for predicting future space weather and planetary atmospheric loss. Compared to large-scale magnetic events, smaller-scale structures like magnetic discontinuities are hard to detect but entail important information on the evolution of the solar wind. A lack of labeled data makes an automated detection of these discontinuities challenging. We propose Deep-SWIM, an approach leveraging advances in contrastive learning, pseudo…
The solar wind is a highly turbulent plasma for which the mean rate of energy transfer $\varepsilon$ has been measured for a long time using the Politano-Pouquet (PP98) exact law. However, this law assumes statistical homogeneity that can be violated by the presence of discontinuities. Here, we introduce a new method based on the inertial dissipation $\Dis$ whose analytical form is derived from incompressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD); it can be considered as a weak and {\it local} (in space) formulation of the PP98 law whose expression is recovered after integration is space. We used $\Dis$ …
We present a statistical analysis for the characteristics and spatial evolution of the interplanetary discontinuities (IDs) in the solar wind, from 0.13 to 0.9 au, by using the Parker Solar Probe measurements on Orbits 4 and 5. 3948 IDs have been collected, including 2511 rotational discontinuities (RDs) and 557 tangential discontinuities (TDs), with the remnant unidentified. The statistical results show that (1) the ID occurrence rate decreases from 200 events/day at 0.13 au to 1 events/day at 0.9 au, following a spatial scaling r-2.00, (2) the RD to TD ratio decreases quickly with the helioc…
In-situ observations of magnetic field fluctuations in the solar wind show a broad continuum in the power spectral density (PSD) with a power-law range of scaling often identified as an inertial range of magnetohydrodynamic turbulence. However, both turbulence and discontinuities are present in the solar wind on these inertial range of scales. We identify and remove these discontinuities using a method which for the first time does not impose a characteristic scale on the resultant time-series. The PSD of vector field fluctuations obtained from at-a point observations is a tensor that can in p…
Measurements of solar wind turbulence reveal the ubiquity of discontinuities. In this study, we investigate how the discontinuities, especially rotational discontinuities (RDs), are formed in magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence. In a simulation of the decaying compressive three-dimensional (3-D) MHD turbulence with an imposed uniform background magnetic field, we detect RDs with sharp field rotations and little variations of magnetic field intensity as well as mass density. At the same time, in the de Hoffman-Teller (HT) frame, the plasma velocity is nearly in agreement with the Alfvén speed,…
It is widely reported that the power spectra of magnetic field and velocity fluctuations in the solar wind have power law scalings with inertial-range spectral indices of -5/3 and -3/2 respectively. Studies of solar wind turbulence have repeatedly demonstrated the impact of discontinuities and coherent structures on the measured spectral index. Whether or not such discontinuities are self-generated by the turbulence or simply observations of advected structures from the inner heliosphere has been a matter of considerable debate. This work presents a statistical study of magnetic field and velo…
In this paper we use three-dimensional electromagnetic particle-in-cell simulations to investigate the interaction of a small-Larmor radius plasma cloud/jet with a transverse non-uniform magnetic field typical to a tangential discontinuity in a parallel geometry. The simulation setup corresponds to an idealized, yet relevant, magnetospheric configuration likely to be observed at the magnetopause during northward orientation of the interplanetary magnetic field. The numerical simulations are adapted to study the kinetic effects and their role on the transport and entry of localized plasma jets …
Probing the solar corona is crucial to study the coronal heating and solar wind acceleration. However, the transient and inhomogeneous solar wind flows carry large-amplitude inherent Alfven waves and turbulence, which make detection more difficult. We report the oscillation and propagation of the solar wind at 2.6 solar radii (Rs) by observation of China Tianwen and ESA Mars Express with radio telescopes. The observations were carried out on Oct.9 2021, when one coronal mass ejection (CME) passed across the ray paths of the telescope beams. We obtain the frequency fluctuations (FF) of the spac…
Solar wind plasma at the Earth's orbit carries transient magnetic field structures including discontinuities. Their interaction with the Earth's bow shock can significantly alter discontinuity configuration and stability. We investigate such an interaction for the most widespread type of solar wind discontinuities - rotational discontinuities (RDs). We use a set of in situ multispacecraft observations and perform kinetic hybrid simulations. We focus on the RD current density amplification that may lead to magnetic reconnection. We show that the amplification can be as high as two orders of mag…
Switchbacks -- rapid, large deflections of the solar wind's magnetic field -- have generated significant interest as possible signatures of the key mechanisms that heat the corona and accelerate the solar wind. In this context, an important task for theories of switchback formation and evolution is to understand their observable distinguishing features, allowing them to be assessed in detail using spacecraft data. Here, we work towards this goal by studying the influence of the Parker spiral on the evolution of Alfvénic switchbacks in an expanding plasma. Using simple analytic arguments based …
Several studies in the near-Earth environment show that intermittent structures are important sites of energy dissipation and particle energization. Recent Parker Solar Probe (PSP) data, sampled in the near-Sun environment, have shown that proton heating is concentrated near coherent structures, suggesting local heating of protons by turbulent cascade in this region. However, whether electrons exhibit similar behavior in the near-Sun environment is not clear. Here, we address this question using PSP data collected near the Sun during the first seven orbits. We use the partial variance of incre…
Erroneous GNSS positioning, failures in spacecraft operations and power outages due to geomagnetically induced currents are severe threats originating from space weather. Having knowledge of potential impacts on modern society in advance is key for many end-user applications. This covers not only the timing of severe geomagnetic storms but also predictions of substorm onsets at polar latitudes. In this study we aim at contributing to the timing problem of space weather impacts and propose a new method to predict the solar wind propagation delay between Lagrangian point L1 and the Earth based o…
The origin of switchbacks in the solar wind is discussed in two classes of theory that differ in the location of the source being either in the transition region near the Sun or in the solar wind, itself. The two classes of theory differ in their predictions of the switchback rate as a function of distance from the Sun. To test these theories, one-hour averages of Parker Solar Probe data were summed over orbits three through seven. It is found that: 1. The average switchback rate was independent of distance from the Sun. 2. The average switchback rate increased with solar wind speed. 3. The sw…
The S-shaped magnetic structure in the solar wind formed by the twisting of magnetic field lines is called a switchback, whose main characteristics are the reversal of the magnetic field and the significant increase in the solar wind radial velocity. We identify 242 switchbacks during the first two encounters of Parker Solar Probe (PSP). Statistics methods are applied to analyze the distribution and the rotation angle and direction of the magnetic field rotation of the switchbacks. The diameter of switchbacks is estimated with a minimum variance analysis (MVA) method based on the assumption of…
Our current capability of space weather prediction in the Earth's radiation belts is limited to only an hour in advance using the real-time solar wind monitoring at the Lagrangian L1 point. To mitigate the impacts of space weather on telecommunication satellites, several frameworks were proposed to advance the lead time of the prediction. We develop a prototype pipeline called "Helio1D" to forecast ambient solar wind conditions (speed, density, temperature, tangential magnetic field) at L1 with a lead time of 4 days. This pipeline predicts Corotating Interaction Regions (CIRs) and high-speed s…
A canonical description of a corotating solar wind high speed stream, in terms of velocity profile, would indicate three main regions:a stream interface or corotating interaction region characterized by a rapid flow speed increase and by compressive phenomena due to dynamical interaction between the fast wind flow and the slower ambient plasma;a fast wind plateau characterized by weak compressive phenomena and large amplitude fluctuations with a dominant Alfvénic character;a rarefaction region characterized by a decreasing trend of the flow speed and wind fluctuations dramatically reduced in a…
Hot flow anomalies (HFAs) are studied using observations of the FGM magnetometer and the CIS plasma detector aboard the four Cluster spacecraft. Previously we studied several specific features of tangential discontinuities on the basis of Cluster measurements in February-April 2003 and discovered a new condition for forming HFAs that is the solar wind speed is higher than the average. However during the whole spring season of 2003, the solar wind speed was higher than average. In this study we analyse HFAs detected in 2007, the year of solar cycle minimum. Our earlier result was confirmed: the…
The twisted local magnetic field at the front or rear regions of the magnetic clouds (MCs) associated with interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) is often nearly opposite to the direction of the ambient interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). There is also observational evidence for magnetic reconnection (MR) outflows occurring within the boundary layers of MCs. In this paper a MR event located at the western flank of the MC occurring on 2000-10-03 is studied in detail. Both the large-scale geometry of the helical MC and the MR outflow structure are scrutinized in a detailed multi-point st…
We provide a simple geometric explanation for the source of switchbacks and associated large and one-sided transverse flows in the solar wind observed by Parker Solar Probe. The more radial, Sub-Parker Spiral structure of the heliospheric magnetic field observed previously by Ulysses, ACE, and STEREO is created within rarefaction regions where footpoint motion from the source of fast into slow wind at the Sun creates a magnetic field line connection across solar wind speed shear. Conversely, when foot-points move from the source of slow wind into faster wind, a Super-Parker Spiral field struct…
Hot flow anomalies (HFAs) are studied using observations of the RAPID suprathermal charged particle detector, the FGM magnetometer, and the CIS plasma detector aboard the four Cluster spacecraft. Previously, we studied several specific features of tangential discontinuities on the basis of Cluster measurements in February-April 2003. In this paper, we confirm the following results: the angle between the Sun direction and the tangentional discontinuity (TD) normal is larger than 45° during HFAs, the magnetic field directional change is large. We then present evidence for a new necessary conditi…

Martian bow shocks, the solar wind interacting with an unmagnetized planet, are studied. We theoretically investigated how solar parameters, such as the solar wind dynamic pressure and the solar extreme ultraviolet (EUV) flux, influence the bow shock location, which is still currently not well understood. We present the formula for the location of the bow shock nose of the unmagnetized planet. The bow shock location, the sum of the ionopause location and bow shock standoff distance, is calculated in the gasdynamics approach. The ionopause location is determined using thermal pressure continuit…
We perform the first statistical study of the effects of the interaction of suprathermal electrons with narrow-band whistler mode waves in the solar wind. We show that this interaction does occur and that it is associated with enhanced widths of the so called strahl component. The latter is directed along the inter- planetary magnetic field away from the Sun. We do the study by comparing the strahl pitch angle widths in the solar wind at 1AU in the absence of large scale discontinuities and transient structures, such as interplanetary shocks, interplanetary coronal mass ejections, stream inter…
Spacecraft observations have shown that the proton temperature in the solar wind falls off with radial distance more slowly than expected for an adiabatic prediction. Usually, previous studies have been focused on the evolution of the solar-wind plasma by using the bulk speed as an order parameter to discriminate different regimes. In contrast, here, we study the radial evolution of pure and homogeneous fast streams (i.e. well-defined streams of coronal-hole plasma that maintain their identity during several solar rotations) by means of re-processed particle data, from the HELIOS satellites be…
Electric field measurements of the Time Domain Sampler (TDS) receiver, part of the Radio and Plasma Waves (RPW) instrument on board Solar Orbiter, often exhibit very intense broadband wave emissions at frequencies below 20~kHz in the spacecraft frame. In this paper, we present a year-long study of electrostatic fluctuations observed in the solar wind at an interval of heliocentric distances from 0.5 to 1~AU. The RPW/TDS observations provide a nearly continuous data set for a statistical study of intense waves below the local plasma frequency. The on-board and continuously collected and process…
Hot flow anomalies (HFAs) are studied using observations of the magnetometer and the plasma instrument aboard the four Cluster spacecraft. We study several specific features of tangential discontinuities on the basis of Cluster measurements from the time periods of February-April 2003, December 2005-April 2006 and January-April 2007, when the separation distance of spacecraft was large. The previously discovered condition (Facsko et al., 2008) for forming HFAs is confirmed, i.e. that the solar wind speed and fast magnetosonic Mach number values are higher than average. Furthermore, this constr…
Hot flow anomalies (HFAs) were first discovered in the early 1980s at the bow shock of the Earth. In the 1990s these features were studied, observed and simulated very intensively and many new missions focused the attention to this phenomenon again. Many basic features and the HFA formation mechanism were clarified observationally and using hybrid simulation techniques. We described previous observational, theoretical and simulation results in the research field of HFAs. We introduced HFA observations performed at the Earth, Mars, Venus and Saturn in this paper. We share different observation …
The Parker or field line tangling model of coronal heating is studied comprehensively via long-time high-resolution simulations of the dynamics of a coronal loop in cartesian geometry within the framework of reduced magnetohydrodynamics (RMHD). Slow photospheric motions induce a Poynting flux which saturates by driving an anisotropic turbulent cascade dominated by magnetic energy. In physical space this corresponds to a magnetic topology where magnetic field lines are barely entangled, nevertheless current sheets (corresponding to the original tangential discontinuities hypothesized by Parker)…
