Spoken language identification (LID) technologies have improved in recent years from discriminating largely distinct languages to discriminating highly similar languages or even dialects of the same language. One aspect that has been mostly neglected, however, is discrimination of languages for multilingual speakers, despite being a primary target audience of many systems that utilize LID technologies. As we show in this work, LID systems can have a high average accuracy for most combinations of languages while greatly underperforming for others when accented speech is present. We address this by using coarser-grained targets for the acoustic LID model and integrating its outputs with interaction context signals in a context-aware model to tailor the system to each user. This combined system achieves an average 97% accuracy across all language combinations while improving worst-case accuracy by over 60% relative to our baseline.
Running automatic speech recognition (ASR) on edge devices is non-trivial due to resource constraints, especially in scenarios that require supporting multiple languages. We propose a new approach to enable multilingual speech recognition on edge devices. This approach uses both language identification and accent identification to select one of multiple monolingual ASR models on-the-fly, each fine-tuned for a particular accent. Initial results for both recognition performance and resource usage are promising with our approach using less than 1/12th of the memory consumed by other solutions.
In this paper, we describe SpeakerStew - a hybrid system to perform speaker verification on 46 languages. Two core ideas were explored in this system: (1) Pooling training data of different languages together for multilingual generalization and reducing development cycles; (2) A novel triage mechanism between text-dependent and text-independent models to reduce runtime cost and expected latency. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study of speaker verification systems at the scale of 46 languages. The problem is framed from the perspective of using a smart speaker device with inter…
Generating 3D speech-driven talking head has received more and more attention in recent years. Recent approaches mainly have following limitations: 1) most speaker-independent methods need handcrafted features that are time-consuming to design or unreliable; 2) there is no convincing method to support multilingual or mixlingual speech as input. In this work, we propose a novel approach using phonetic posteriorgrams (PPG). In this way, our method doesn't need hand-crafted features and is more robust to noise compared to recent approaches. Furthermore, our method can support multilingual speech …
A text-independent speaker recognition system relies on successfully encoding speech factors such as vocal pitch, intensity, and timbre to achieve good performance. A majority of such systems are trained and evaluated using spoken voice or everyday conversational voice data. Spoken voice, however, exhibits a limited range of possible speaker dynamics, thus constraining the utility of the derived speaker recognition models. Singing voice, on the other hand, covers a broader range of vocal and ambient factors and can, therefore, be used to evaluate the robustness of a speaker recognition system.…
We present progress towards bilingual Text-to-Speech which is able to transform a monolingual voice to speak a second language while preserving speaker voice quality. We demonstrate that a bilingual speaker embedding space contains a separate distribution for each language and that a simple transform in speaker space generated by the speaker embedding can be used to control the degree of accent of a synthetic voice in a language. The same transform can be applied even to monolingual speakers. In our experiments speaker data from an English-Spanish (Mexican) bilingual speaker was used, and the …

In this paper, we present SANE-TTS, a stable and natural end-to-end multilingual TTS model. By the difficulty of obtaining multilingual corpus for given speaker, training multilingual TTS model with monolingual corpora is unavoidable. We introduce speaker regularization loss that improves speech naturalness during cross-lingual synthesis as well as domain adversarial training, which is applied in other multilingual TTS models. Furthermore, by adding speaker regularization loss, replacing speaker embedding with zero vector in duration predictor stabilizes cross-lingual inference. With this repl…
Speaker Verification (SV) is a task to verify the claimed identity of the claimant using his/her voice sample. Though there exists an ample amount of research in SV technologies, the development concerning a multilingual conversation is limited. In a country like India, almost all the speakers are polyglot in nature. Consequently, the development of a Multilingual SV (MSV) system on the data collected in the Indian scenario is more challenging. With this motivation, the Indic- Multilingual Speaker Verification (I-MSV) Challenge 2022 has been designed for understanding and comparing the state-o…
We work to create a multilingual speech synthesis system which can generate speech with the proper accent while retaining the characteristics of an individual voice. This is challenging to do because it is expensive to obtain bilingual training data in multiple languages, and the lack of such data results in strong correlations that entangle speaker, language, and accent, resulting in poor transfer capabilities. To overcome this, we present a multilingual, multiaccented, multispeaker speech synthesis model based on RADTTS with explicit control over accent, language, speaker and fine-grained $F…
Recent advances in neural TTS have led to models that can produce high-quality synthetic speech. However, these models typically require large amounts of training data, which can make it costly to produce a new voice with the desired quality. Although multi-speaker modeling can reduce the data requirements necessary for a new voice, this approach is usually not viable for many low-resource languages for which abundant multi-speaker data is not available. In this paper, we therefore investigated to what extent multilingual multi-speaker modeling can be an alternative to monolingual multi-speake…

Recent years have seen a surge in finding association between faces and voices within a cross-modal biometric application along with speaker recognition. Inspired from this, we introduce a challenging task in establishing association between faces and voices across multiple languages spoken by the same set of persons. The aim of this paper is to answer two closely related questions: "Is face-voice association language independent?" and "Can a speaker be recognised irrespective of the spoken language?". These two questions are very important to understand effectiveness and to boost development …
This paper presents a study on discriminative artificial neural network classifiers in the context of open-set speaker identification. Both 2-class and multi-class architectures are tested against the conventional Gaussian mixture model based classifier on enrolled speaker sets of different sizes. The performance evaluation shows that the multi-class neural network system has superior performance for large population sizes.
In this paper we explore speaker identification using electroencephalography (EEG) signals. The performance of speaker identification systems degrades in presence of background noise, this paper demonstrates that EEG features can be used to enhance the performance of speaker identification systems operating in presence and absence of background noise. The paper further demonstrates that in presence of high background noise, speaker identification system using only EEG features as input demonstrates better performance than the system using only acoustic features as input.

This work examines the content and usefulness of disentangled phone and speaker representations from two separately trained VQ-VAE systems: one trained on multilingual data and another trained on monolingual data. We explore the multi- and monolingual models using four small proof-of-concept tasks: copy-synthesis, voice transformation, linguistic code-switching, and content-based privacy masking. From these tasks, we reflect on how disentangled phone and speaker representations can be used to manipulate speech in a meaningful way. Our experiments demonstrate that the VQ representations are sui…

Speaker identification systems in a real-world scenario are tasked to identify a speaker amongst a set of enrolled speakers given just a few samples for each enrolled speaker. This paper demonstrates the effectiveness of meta-learning and relation networks for this use case. We propose improved relation networks for speaker verification and few-shot (unseen) speaker identification. The use of relation networks facilitates joint training of the frontend speaker encoder and the backend model. Inspired by the use of prototypical networks in speaker verification and to increase the discriminabilit…
Even human intelligence system fails to offer 100% accuracy in identifying speeches from a specific individual. Machine intelligence is trying to mimic humans in speaker identification problems through various approaches to speech feature extraction and speech modeling techniques. This paper presents a text-independent speaker identification system that employs Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC) for feature extraction and k-Nearest Neighbor (kNN) for classification. The maximum cross-validation accuracy obtained was 60%. This will be improved upon in subsequent research.

Speaker identification models are vulnerable to carefully designed adversarial perturbations of their input signals that induce misclassification. In this work, we propose a white-box steganography-inspired adversarial attack that generates imperceptible adversarial perturbations against a speaker identification model. Our approach, FoolHD, uses a Gated Convolutional Autoencoder that operates in the DCT domain and is trained with a multi-objective loss function, in order to generate and conceal the adversarial perturbation within the original audio files. In addition to hindering speaker ident…
We propose an end-to-end speaker-attributed automatic speech recognition model that unifies speaker counting, speech recognition, and speaker identification on monaural overlapped speech. Our model is built on serialized output training (SOT) with attention-based encoder-decoder, a recently proposed method for recognizing overlapped speech comprising an arbitrary number of speakers. We extend SOT by introducing a speaker inventory as an auxiliary input to produce speaker labels as well as multi-speaker transcriptions. All model parameters are optimized by speaker-attributed maximum mutual info…
We present a multispeaker, multilingual text-to-speech (TTS) synthesis model based on Tacotron that is able to produce high quality speech in multiple languages. Moreover, the model is able to transfer voices across languages, e.g. synthesize fluent Spanish speech using an English speaker's voice, without training on any bilingual or parallel examples. Such transfer works across distantly related languages, e.g. English and Mandarin. Critical to achieving this result are: 1. using a phonemic input representation to encourage sharing of model capacity across languages, and 2. incorporating an a…
Adversarial attack approaches to speaker identification either need high computational cost or are not very effective, to our knowledge. To address this issue, in this paper, we propose a novel generation-network-based approach, called symmetric saliency-based encoder-decoder (SSED), to generate adversarial voice examples to speaker identification. It contains two novel components. First, it uses a novel saliency map decoder to learn the importance of speech samples to the decision of a targeted speaker identification system, so as to make the attacker focus on generating artificial noise to t…
While neural methods for text-to-speech (TTS) have shown great advances in modeling multiple speakers, even in zero-shot settings, the amount of data needed for those approaches is generally not feasible for the vast majority of the world's over 6,000 spoken languages. In this work, we bring together the tasks of zero-shot voice cloning and multilingual low-resource TTS. Using the language agnostic meta learning (LAML) procedure and modifications to a TTS encoder, we show that it is possible for a system to learn speaking a new language using just 5 minutes of training data while retaining the…
We propose a new feature, namely, pitchsynchronous discrete cosine transform (PS-DCT), for the task of speaker identification. These features are obtained directly from the voiced segments of the speech signal, without any preemphasis or windowing. The feature vectors are vector quantized, to create one separate codebook for each speaker during training. The performance of the PS-DCT features is shown to be good, and hence it can be used to supplement other features for the speaker identification task. Speaker identification is also performed using Mel-frequency cepstral coefficient (MFCC) fea…
The audio data is increasing day by day throughout the globe with the increase of telephonic conversations, video conferences and voice messages. This research provides a mechanism for identifying a speaker in an audio file, based on the human voice biometric features like pitch, amplitude, frequency etc. We proposed an unsupervised learning model where the model can learn speech representation with limited dataset. Librispeech dataset was used in this research and we were able to achieve word error rate of 1.8.

In this paper we discuss the relevance of bandwidth extension for speaker identification tasks. Mainly we want to study if it is possible to recognize voices that have been bandwith extended. For this purpose, we created two different databases (microphonic and ISDN) of speech signals that were bandwidth extended from telephone bandwidth ([300, 3400] Hz) to full bandwidth ([100, 8000] Hz). We have evaluated different parameterizations, and we have found that the MELCEPST parameterization can take advantage of the bandwidth extension algorithms in several situations.
Deep embedding based text-independent speaker verification has demonstrated superior performance to traditional methods in many challenging scenarios. Its loss functions can be generally categorized into two classes, i.e., verification and identification. The verification loss functions match the pipeline of speaker verification, but their implementations are difficult. Thus, most state-of-the-art deep embedding methods use the identification loss functions with softmax output units or their variants. In this paper, we propose a verification loss function, named the maximization of partial are…

A novel text-independent speaker identification (SI) method is proposed. This method uses the Mel-frequency Cepstral coefficients (MFCCs) and the dynamic information among adjacent frames as feature sets to capture speaker's characteristics. In order to utilize dynamic information, we design super-MFCCs features by cascading three neighboring MFCCs frames together. The probability density function (PDF) of these super-MFCCs features is estimated by the recently proposed histogram transform~(HT) method, which generates more training data by random transforms to realize the histogram PDF estimat…

Emotional state of a speaker is found to have significant effect in speech production, which can deviate speech from that arising from neutral state. This makes identifying speakers with different emotions a challenging task as generally the speaker models are trained using neutral speech. In this work, we propose to overcome this problem by creation of emotion invariant speaker embedding. We learn an extractor network that maps the test embeddings with different emotions obtained using i-vector based system to an emotion invariant space. The resultant test embeddings thus become emotion invar…

In this paper we evaluate the relevance of the model size for speaker identification. We show that it is possible to improve the identification rates if a different model size is used for each speaker. We present an approach to tackle the speaker recognition problem using Triplet Neural Networks. Currently, the $i$-vector representation with probabilistic linear discriminant analysis (PLDA) is the most commonly used technique to solve this problem, due to high classification accuracy with a relatively short computation time. In this paper, we explore a neural network approach, namely Triplet Neural Networks (TNNs), to built a latent space for different classifiers to solve the Multi-Target Speaker Detection and Identification Challenge Evaluation 2018 (MCE 2018) dataset. This paper examines the speaker identification potential of breath sounds in continuous speech. Speech is largely produced during exhalation. In order to replenish air in the lungs, speakers must periodically inhale. When inhalation occurs in the midst of continuous speech, it is generally through the mouth. Intra-speech breathing behavior has been the subject of much study, including the patterns, cadence, and variations in energy levels. However, an often ignored characteristic is the {\em sound} produced during the inhalation phase of this cycle. Intra-speech inhalation is rapid and energet…

Due to a constantly increasing amount of speech data that is stored in different types of databases, voice privacy has become a major concern. To respond to such concern, speech researchers have developed various methods for speaker de-identification. The state-of-the-art solutions utilize deep learning solutions which can be effective but might be unavailable or impractical to apply for, for example, under-resourced languages. Formant modification is a simpler, yet effective method for speaker de-identification which requires no training data. Still, remaining intonational patterns in formant…

We propose a new method for speaker diarization that can handle overlapping speech with 2+ people. Our method is based on compositional embeddings [1]: Like standard speaker embedding methods such as x-vector [2], compositional embedding models contain a function f that separates speech from different speakers. In addition, they include a composition function g to compute set-union operations in the embedding space so as to infer the set of speakers within the input audio. In an experiment on multi-person speaker identification using synthesized LibriSpeech data, the proposed method outperform…
