We report $^{51}$V NMR, $μ$SR and zero applied field $^{63,65}$Cu NMR measurements on powder samples of Sr-vesignieite, SrCu$_3$V$_2$O$_8$(OH)$_2$, a $S = 1/2$ nearly-kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet. Our results demonstrate that the ground state is a $\mathbf{q} = 0$ magnetic structure with spins canting either in or out of the kagome plane, giving rise to weak ferromagnetism. We determine the size of ordered moments and the angle of canting for different possible $\mathbf{q} = 0$ structures and orbital scenarios, thereby providing insight into the role of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction in this material.
We report results of magnetic susceptibility and 51V- and 63,65Cu-NMR measurements on a high-quality powder sample of vesignieite BaCu3V2O8(OH)2, a candidate for the spin-1/2 kagome antiferromagnet. We observed a twostep magnetic transition: the appearance of spatially inhomogeneous static moments below 13 K and a long-range order below 9 K. The NMR data indicate a Q = 0 magnetic structure at 1.4 K with the in-plane spin components of three sublattices oriented at nearly 120 degrees to each other and the magnitude of the ordered moments of at least 0.6 muB
We report an electron spin resonance investigation of the geometrically frustrated spin-1/2 kagome antiferromagnet vesignieite, BaCu$_3$V$_2$O$_8$(OH)$_2$. Analysis of the line widths and line shifts indicates the dominance of in-plane Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya anisotropy that is proposed to suppress strongly quantum spin fluctuations and thus to promote long-range ordering rather than a spin-liquid state. We also evidence an enhanced spin-phonon contribution that might originate from a lattice instability and discuss the origin of a low-temperature mismatch between intrinsic and bulk susceptibilit…
In this Letter, we identify a noncoplanar chiral spin texture on the distorted kagomé-lattice antiferromagnets induced by the presence of a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the distorted kagomé plane. The noncoplanar chiral spin texture has a nonzero scalar spin chirality similar to a chiral quantum spin liquid with broken time-reversal symmetry. In the noncoplanar regime we observe nontrivial topological magnetic excitations and thermal Hall response through the emergent field-induced scalar spin chirality in contrast to collinear ferromagnets in which the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) sp…
The spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ kagome antiferromagnet is an archetypal frustrated system predicted to host a variety of exotic magnetic states. We show using neutron scattering measurements that deuterated vesignieite BaCu$_{3}$V$_{2}$O$_{8}$(OD)$_{2}$, a fully stoichiometric $S=1/2$ kagome magnet with $<$1% lattice distortion, orders magnetically at $T_{\mathrm{N}}=9$K into a multi-k coplanar variant of the predicted triple-k octahedral structure. We find this structure is stabilized by a dominant antiferromagnetic 3$^{\mathrm{rd}}$-neighbor exchange $J_3$ with minor 1$^{\mathrm{st}}$- or 2$^{\mathrm…
We report the study of high quality samples of the frustrated S = 1/2 kagome antiferromagnet vesignieite, Cu3Ba(VO5H)2. Neutron powder diffraction measurements evidence the high quality of the kagome lattice and show no sign of a transition to long-range order. A kink in the susceptibility below T = 9 K is matched to a reduction in paramagnetic-like correlations in the diffraction data and a slowing of the spin dynamics observed by MuSR. Our results point to an exotic quantum state below 9 K with coexistance of both dynamical and small frozen moments \sim 0.1 \muB. We propose that Dzyaloshinsk…
The magnetization of two spin-1/2 kagome antiferromagnets, volborthite and vesignieite, has been measured in pulsed magnetic fields up to 68 T. A magnetization plateau is observed for each compound near the highest magnetic field. Magnetizations at saturation are approximately equal to 0.40Ms for both compounds, where Ms is the fully saturated magnetization, irrespective of a difference in the distortion of the kagome lattice between the two compounds. It should be noted that these values of magnetizations are significantly larger than Ms/3 predicted theoretically for the one-third magnetizati…
The intrinsic magnetic susceptibility and local magnetization of the near-kagome quantum magnet vesignieite, Cu3BaV2O8(OH)2, are presented as measured using 51V NMR. The NMR line shift gives an accurate measurement of the intrinsic susceptibility of the kagome sites which closely resembles that of the quantum spin liquid herbertsmithite [A. Olariu et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 087202 (2008)]. It is therefore surprising that, at Tc ~ 9 K, a transition to a heterogeneous ground state is observed. A gradual wipeout of half the NMR intensity indicates a slowly fluctuating spin liquid component and …
A polycrystalline sample of vesignieite BaCu3V2O8(OH)2 comprising a nearly ideal kagome lattice composed of Cu2+ ions carrying spin 1/2 has been synthesized and studied by magnetization and heat capacity measurements. Magnetic susceptibility shows a neither long range order, a spin glass transition nor a spin gap down to 2 K, in spite of a moderately strong antiferromagnetic interaction of J/kB = 53 K between nearest-neighbor spins. A broad peak observed at a temperature corresponding to 0.4J in intrinsic magnetic susceptibility indicates a marked development of the short-range order. The grou…
We investigate the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of the newly synthesized mineral barlowite Cu4(OH)6FBr which contains Cu2+ ions in a perfect kagome arrangement. In contrast to the spin-liquid candidate herbertsmithite ZnCu3(OH)6Cl2, kagome layers in barlowite are perfectly aligned due to the different bonding environments adopted by F- and Br- compared to Cl-. We perform density functional theory calculations to obtain the Heisenberg Hamiltonian parameters of Cu4(OH)6FBr which has a Cu2+ site coupling the kagome layers. The 3D network of exchange couplings together with a sub…
Magnetization, specific heat, and neutron scattering measurements were performed to study a magnetic transition in jarosite, a spin-5/2 kagome lattice antiferromagnet. When a magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the kagome plane, magnetizations in the ordered state show a sudden increase at a critical field H_c, indicative of the transition from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic states. This sudden increase arises as the spins on alternate kagome planes rotate 180 degrees to ferromagnetically align the canted moments along the field direction. The canted moment on a single kagome plane …
We study the two-dimensional kagome-ice model derived from a pyrochlore lattice with second- and third-neighbor interactions. The canted moments align along the local $\langle 111 \rangle$ axes of the pyrochlore and respond to both in-plane and out-of-plane external fields. We find that the combination of further-neighbor interactions together with the external fields introduces a rich phase diagram with different spin textures. Close to the phase boundaries, metastable $\textit{"snake"}$ domains emerge with extremely long relaxation time. Our kinetic Monte Carlo analysis of the magnetic-field…
We introduce $\mathrm{Nd_{3}Sb_{3}Mg_{2}O_{14}}$ with ideal kagome lattices of neodymium ions in ABC stacking. Thermodynamic measurements show a Curie-Weiss temperature of $Θ_{CW}=-0.12~$K, a Nd$^{3+}$ spin-1/2 Kramers doublet ground state, and a second order phase transition at $T_N=0.56(2)~$K. Neutron scattering reveals non-coplanar scalar chiral ${\bf k} =0$ magnetic order with a correlation length exceeding 400 Å= 55 $a$ and an ordered moment of $1.79(5)~μ_B$. This order includes a canted ferromagnetic component perpendicular to the kagome planes favored by Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactio…
We report bulk magnetization, and elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements under an external magnetic field, $H$, on the weakly coupled distorted kagome system, Cu_{2}(OD)_3Cl. Our results show that the ordered state below 6.7 K is a canted antiferromagnet and consists of large antiferromagnetic $ac$-components and smaller ferromagnetic $b$-components. By first-principle calculations and linear spin wave analysis, we present a simple spin hamiltonian with non-uniform nearest neighbor exchange interactions resulting in a system of coupled spin trimers with a single-ion anisotropy t…
We investigate the antiferromagnetic canting instability of the spin-1/2 kagome ferromagnet, as realized in the layered cuprates Cu$_3$Bi(SeO$_3)_2$O$_2$X (X=Br, Cl, and I). While the local canting can be explained in terms of competing exchange interactions, the direction of the ferrimagnetic order parameter fluctuates strongly even at short distances on account of frustration which gives rise to an infinite ground state degeneracy at the classical level. In analogy with the kagome antiferromagnet, the accidental degeneracy is fully lifted only by non-linear 1/S corrections, rendering the sel…
We have experimentally identified a new magnetic ground state for the kagome lattice, in the perfectly hexagonal Fe2+ (3d6, S = 2) compound Fe4Si2Sn7O16. Representational symmetry analysis of neutron diffraction data shows that below T_N = 3.5 K, the spins on 2/3 of the magnetic ions order into canted antiferromagnetic chains, separated by the remaining 1/3 which are geometrically frustrated and show no long-range order down to at least T = 0.1 K. Moessbauer spectroscopy confirms that there is no static order on the latter 1/3 of the magnetic ions - i.e., they are in a liquid-like rather than …
We study the effects of an in-plane Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction under an external magnetic field in the highly frustrated kagome antiferromagnet. We focus on the low-temperature phase diagram, which we obtain through extensive Monte-Carlo simulations. We show that, given the geometric frustration of the lattice, highly non trivial phases emerge. At low fields, lowering the temperature from a cooperative paramagnet phase, the kagome elementary plaquettes form non-coplanar arrangements with non-zero chirality, retaining a partial degeneracy. As the field increases, there is a transition fr…
The hexagonal swedenborgite, CaBaCo$_2$Fe$_2$O$_7$, is a chiral frustrated antiferromagnet, in which magnetic ions form alternating Kagome and triangular layers. We observe a long range $\sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3}$ antiferromagnetic order setting in below $T_N = 160$ K by neutron diffraction on single crystals of CaBaCo$_2$Fe$_2$O$_7$. Both magnetization and polarized neutron single crystal diffraction measurements show that close to $T_N$ spins lie predominantly in the $ab$-plane, while upon cooling the spin structure becomes increasingly canted due to Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. The or…

Applying a magnetic field in the hexagonal plane of YMn$_6$Sn$_6$ leads to a complex magnetic phase diagram of commensurate and incommensurate phases, one of which coexists with the topological Hall effect (THE) generated by a unique fluctuation-driven mechanism. Using unpolarized neutron diffraction, we report on the solved magnetic structure for two previously identified, but unknown, commensurate phases. These include a low-temperature, high-field fan-like phase and a room-temperature, low-field canted antiferromagnetic phase. An intermediate incommensurate phase between the fan-like and fo…
We study in detail the transport properties of a model of conducting electrons in the presence of double-exchange between localized spins arranged on a 2D Kagome lattice, as introduced by Ohgushi, Murakami, and Nagaosa (2000). The relationship between the canting angle of the spin texture $θ$ and the Berry phase field flux per triangular plaquette $ϕ$ is derived explicitly and we emphasize the similarities between this model and Haldane's honeycomb lattice version of the quantum Hall effect (Haldane, 1988). The quantization of the transverse (Hall) conductivity $σ_{xy}$ is derived explicitly f…
