The AGN bolometric correction is a key element to understand BH demographics and compute accurate BH accretion histories from AGN luminosities. However, current estimates still differ from each other by up to a factor of two to three, and rely on extrapolations at the lowest and highest luminosities. Here we revisit this fundamental issue presenting general hard X-ray ($K_{X}$) and optical ($K_{O}$) bolometric corrections, computed combining several AGN samples spanning the widest (about 7 dex) luminosity range ever used for this kind of studies. We analysed a total of $\sim 1000$ type 1 and type 2 AGN for which a dedicated SED-fitting has been carried out. We provide a bolometric correction separately for type 1 and type 2 AGN; the two bolometric corrections results to be in agreement in the overlapping luminosity range and therefore, for the first time, a universal bolometric correction for the whole AGN sample (both type 1 and type 2) has been computed. We found that $K_{X}$ is fairly constant at $log(L_{BOL}/L_{\odot}) < 11$, while it increases up to about one order of magnitude at $log(L_{BOL}/L_{\odot}) \sim 14.5$. A similar increasing trend has been observed when its dependence on either the Eddington ratio or the BH mass is considered, while no dependence on redshift up to $z\sim3.5$ has been found. On the contrary, the optical bolometric correction appears to be fairly constant (i.e. $K_{O} \sim 5$) whatever is the independent variable. We also verified that our bolometric corrections correctly predict the AGN bolometric luminosity functions. According to this analysis, our bolometric corrections can be applied to the whole AGN population in a wide range of luminosity and redshift.
The masses of supermassive black holes in active galactic nuclei (AGN) can be derived spectroscopically via virial mass estimators based on selected broad optical/ultraviolet emission lines. These estimates commonly use the line width as a proxy for the gas speed and the monochromatic continuum luminosity as a proxy for the radius of the broad line region. However, if the size of the broad line region scales with bolometric rather than monochromatic AGN luminosity, mass estimates based on different emission lines will show a systematic discrepancy which is a function of the color of the AGN co…
The high-ionization mid-IR lines, excited in the Narrow Line Regions (NLR) of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), barely affected by stellar excitation and dust extinction, trace the AGN bolometric power. We used the complete 12 micron sample of Seyfert galaxies, for which 100/116 objects have reliable 2-10keV observations. The [NeV] and [OIV] mid-IR lines linearly correlate with several AGN bolometric indicators (intrinsic 2-10keV and observed 14-195keV X-ray emission, compact nuclear 12 micron emission, [OIII] 5007A line emission), both in terms of flux and luminosity. No evidence of systematic di…
Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are typically identified through radio, mid-infrared, or X-ray emission or through the presence of broad and/or narrow emission lines. AGN can also leave an imprint on a galaxy's spectral energy distribution (SED) through the re-processing of photons by the dusty torus. Using the SED fitting code ProSpect with an incorporated AGN component, we fit the far ultraviolet to far-infrared SEDs of $\sim$494,00 galaxies in the D10-COSMOS field and $\sim$230,000 galaxies from the GAMA survey. By combining an AGN component with a flexible star formation and metallicity imple…
We investigate the accretion rate, bolometric luminosity, black hole (BH) growth time and BH spin in a large AGN sample under the assumption that all such objects are powered via thin or slim accretion discs (ADs). We use direct estimates of the mass accretion rate, Mdot, to show that many currently used values of Lbol and Ledd are either under estimated or over estimated because they are based on bolometric correction factors that are adjusted to the properties of moderately accreting active galactic nuclei (AGN) and do not take into account the correct combination of BH mass, spin and accret…
The bolometric luminosity of active galactic nuclei (AGN) is difficult to determine and various approximations have been used to calibrate it against different observed properties. Here I combine theoretical calculations of optically thick, geometrically thin accretion disks, and observed X-ray properties of AGN, to provide new bolometric correction factors (\kbol) over a large range of black hole (BH) mass, accretion rate, and spin. This is particularly important in cases where the mass accretion rate cannot be determined from the observed spectral energy distribution, and in cases where lumi…
We present X-ray bolometric correction factors, $κ_{Bol}$ ($\equiv L_{Bol}/L_X$), for Compton-thick (CT) active galactic nuclei (AGN) with the aim of testing AGN torus models, probing orientation effects, and estimating the bolometric output of the most obscured AGN. We adopt bolometric luminosities, $L_{Bol}$, from literature infrared (IR) torus modeling and compile published intrinsic 2--10 keV X-ray luminosities, $L_{X}$, from X-ray torus modeling of NuSTAR data. Our sample consists of 10 local CT AGN where both of these estimates are available. We test for systematic differences in $κ_{Bol…
We present a detailed study of ionized outflows in a large sample of ~650 hard X-ray detected AGN. Using optical spectroscopy from the BAT AGN Spectroscopic Survey (BASS) we are able to reveal the faint wings of the [OIII] emission lines associated with outflows covering, for the first time, an unexplored range of low AGN bolometric luminosity at low redshift (z~0.05). We test if and how the incidence and velocity of ionized outflow is related to AGN physical parameters: black hole mass, gas column density, Eddington Ratio, [OIII], X-ray, and bolometric luminosities. We find a higher occurrenc…
Multi-phase fast, massive outflows have been postulated to play a crucial role in galaxy evolution. The aim of this work is to constrain the nature and the fraction of outflowing gas in AGNs, as well as the nuclear conditions possibly at the origin of such phenomena. We present a large spectroscopic sample of X-ray detected SDSS AGNs at z <0.8. X-ray and optical flux ratio diagnostics are used to select the sample. Physical and kinematic characterisation are derived re-analysing optical (and X-ray) spectra. We derive the incidence of ionised (~40%) and atomic (< 1%) outflows covering a wide ra…
Several studies support the existence of a link between the AGN and star formation activity. Radio jets have been argued to be an ideal mechanism for direct interaction between the AGN and the host galaxy. A drawback of previous surveys of AGN is that they are fundamentally limited by the degeneracy between redshift and luminosity in flux-density limited samples. To overcome this limitation, we present far-infrared Herschel observations of 74 radio-loud quasars (RLQs), 72 radio-quiet quasars (RQQs) and 27 radio galaxies (RGs), selected at 0.9<z<1.1 which span over two decades in optical lumino…
Mass and spin are two fundamental properties of astrophysical black holes. While some established, indirect methods are adopted to measure both these properties of active galactic nuclei (AGN) when viewed relatively face-on, very few suggested methods exist to measure these properties when AGN are viewed highly inclined and potentially obscured by large amounts of gas. In this context, we explore the accuracy and performance of a recently proposed method to estimate the spin of AGN through fitting their accretion disk spectral energy distribution, when adapted for highly inclined and obscured …
To understand the impact of active galactic nuclei (AGN) on their host galaxies and large scale environment it is crucial to determine their total radiative power across all wavelengths (i.e., bolometric luminosity). In this contribution we describe how quasar accretion disk spectral energy distribution (SED) templates, parameterized by the black hole (BH) mass, Eddington ratio, and spin can be used to estimate their total radiated luminosity. To estimate the bolometric luminosity of AGN, we integrate the accretion disk SEDs from 1$μ$m to 10keV. Our approach self-consistently covers any gaps i…

The Swift/BAT 9-month catalogue of active galactic nuclei (AGN) provides an unbiased census of local supermassive black hole accretion, and probes to all but the highest levels of absorption in AGN. We explore a method for characterising the bolometric output of both obscured and unobscured AGN by combining the hard X-ray data from Swift/BAT (14-195keV) with the reprocessed IR emission as seen with the IRAS all-sky surveys. This approach bypasses the complex modifications to the SED introduced by absorption in the optical, UV and 0.1-10 keV regimes and provides a long-term, average picture of …
Hyper-luminous Quasi-Stellar Objects (QSOs) represent the ideal laboratory to investigate Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) feedback mechanism since their formidable energy release causes powerful winds at all scales and thus the maximum feedback is expected. We aim at deriving the mean Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) of a sample of 85 WISE-SDSS Selected Hyper-luminous (WISSH) quasars. Since the SED provides a direct way to investigate the AGN structure, our goal is to understand if quasars at the bright end of the luminosity function have peculiar properties compared to the bulk of the populati…
We have assembled a sample of 5 X-ray-absorbed and submm-luminous type 1 QSOs at $z \sim 2$ which are simultaneously growing their central black holes through accretion and forming stars copiously. We present here the analysis of their rest-frame UV to submm Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs), including new Herschel data. Both AGN (direct and reprocessed) and Star Formation (SF) emission are needed to model their SEDs. From the SEDs and their UV-optical spectra we have estimated the masses of their black holes $M_{BH}\sim 10^{9}-10^{10}\,M_{\odot}$, their intrinsic AGN bolometric luminositie…
We have newly identified a substantial number of type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGN) featuring weak broad-line regions (BLRs) at z < 0.2 from detailed analysis of galaxy spectra in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7. These objects predominantly show a stellar continuum but also a broad H-alpha emission line, indicating the presence of a low-luminosity AGN oriented so that we are viewing the central engine directly without significant obscuration. These accreting black holes have previously eluded detection due to their weak nature. The new BLR AGNs we found increased the number of kno…

The SINFONI survey for Unveiling the Physics and Effect of Radiative feedback (SUPER) aims at tracing and characterizing ionized gas outflows and their impact on star formation in a statistical sample of X-ray selected Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) at z$\sim$2. We present the first SINFONI results for a sample of 21 Type-1 AGN spanning a wide range in bolometric luminosity (log $\mathrm{L_{bol}}$ = 45.4-47.9 erg/s). The main aims of this paper are determining the extension of the ionized gas, characterizing the occurrence of AGN-driven outflows, and linking the properties of such outflows with …
We present initial results from a Hubble Space Telescope snapshot imaging survey of the host galaxies of Swift-BAT active galactic nuclei (AGN) at z<0.1. The hard X-ray selection makes this sample sample relatively unbiased in terms of obscuration compared to optical AGN selection methods. The high-resolution images of 154 target AGN enable us to investigate the detailed photometric structure of the host galaxies, such as the Hubble type and merging features. We find that 48% and 44% of the sample is hosted by early-type and late-type galaxies, respectively. The host galaxies of the remaining …
The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Galaxy Zoo project has revealed a number of spectacular galaxies possessing Extended Emission-Line Regions (EELRs), the most famous being Hanny's Voorwerp galaxy. We present another EELR object discovered in the SDSS endeavor: the Teacup Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN), nicknamed for its EELR, which has a handle like structure protruding 15 kpc into the northeast quadrant of the galaxy. We analyze physical conditions of this galaxy with long-slit ground based spectroscopy from Lowell, Lick, and KPNO observatories. With the Lowell 1.8m Perkin's telescope we too…
We present and analyse quasi-simultaneous multi-epoch spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of seven reverberation-mapped AGNs for which accurate black hole mass measurements and suitable archival data are available from the 'AGN Watch' monitoring programs. We explore the potential of optical-UV and X-ray data, obtained within 2 days, to provide more accurate SED-based measurements of individual AGN and quantify the impact of source variability on key measurements typically used to characterise the black hole accretion process plus on bolometric correction factors at 5100 Å, 1350 Å and for the …
We utilize mid-infrared multi-epoch data from Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) over a $\sim10$-year period in W1 (3.4$μ$m) and W2 (4.6$μ$m) bands to investigate the structure of dusty torus in low-redshift ($0.15<z\le 0.4$) active galactic nuclei (AGN). We calculate a Spearman correlation coefficient ($r_{12}$) between W1 magnitude and W1$-$W2 color based on the light curve in individual objects. Interestingly, $r_{12}$ spans a broad range from $-1$ to $1$, and is detected to be correlated with mean W1$-$W2 color and AGN bolometric luminosity, in the sense that objects with blue W1$-…
We present new estimates of AGN accretion and star-formation luminosity in galaxies obtained for the local 12-$μ$m sample of Seyfert galaxies (12MGS), by performing a detailed broad-band spectral energy distribution (SED) decomposition including the emission of stars, dust heated by star formation and a possible AGN dusty torus. Thanks to the availability of data from the X-rays to the sub-millimetre, we constrain and test the contribution of the stellar, AGN and star-formation components to the SEDs. The availability of Spitzer-IRS low resolution mid-infrared (mid-IR) spectra is crucial to co…
We have determined the relation between the AGN luminosities at rest-frame 6 μm associated to the dusty torus emission and at 2-10 keV energies using a complete, X-ray flux limited sample of 232 AGN drawn from the Bright Ultra-hard XMM-Newton Survey. The objects have intrinsic X-ray luminosities between 10^42 and 10^46 erg/s and redshifts from 0.05 to 2.8. The rest-frame 6 μm luminosities were computed using data from the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer and are based on a spectral energy distribution decomposition into AGN and galaxy emission. The best-fit relationship for the full sample …
We perform a systematic X-ray spectroscopic analysis of 57 local ultra/luminous infrared galaxy systems (containing 84 individual galaxies) observed with Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array and/or Swift/BAT. Combining soft X-ray data obtained with Chandra, XMM-Newton, Suzaku and/or Swift/XRT, we identify 40 hard ($>$10 keV) X-ray detected active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and constrain their torus parameters with the X-ray clumpy torus model XCLUMPY (Tanimoto et al. 2019). Among the AGNs at $z < 0.03$, for which sample biases are minimized, the fraction of Compton-thick ($N_{\rm H} \geq 10^{24}$…
In this work, we present a study of 207 quasars selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey quasar catalogs and the Herschel Stripe 82 survey. Quasars within this sample are high luminosity quasars with a mean bolometric luminosity of $10^{46.4}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The redshift range of this sample is within $z<4$, with a mean value of $1.5\pm0.78$. Because we only selected quasars that have been detected in all three Herschel-SPIRE bands, the quasar sample is complete yet highly biased. Based on the multi-wavelength photometric observation data, we conducted a spectral energy distribution (SED) fit…
Enhanced emission from the dense gas tracer HCN (relative to HCO$^+ $) has been proposed as a signature of active galactic nuclei (AGN). In a previous single-dish millimeter line survey we identified galaxies with HCN/HCO$ ^+ $ (1-0) intensity ratios consistent with those of many AGN but whose mid-infrared spectral diagnostics are consistent with little to no ( $\lesssim15\% $) contribution of an AGN to the bolometric luminosity. To search for putative heavily obscured AGN, we present and analyze \nustar hard X-ray (3-79 keV) observations of four such galaxies from the Great Observatories All-…
We present luminosity functions derived from a spectroscopic survey of AGN selected from Spitzer Space Telescope imaging surveys. Selection in the mid-infrared is significantly less affected by dust obscuration. We can thus compare the luminosity functions of the obscured and unobscured AGN in a more reliable fashion than by using optical or X-ray data alone. We find that the AGN luminosity function can be well described by a broken power-law model in which the break luminosity decreases with redshift. At high redshifts ($z>1.6$), we find significantly more AGN at a given bolometric luminosity…
We present ALMA observations of the inner 1' (1.2 kpc) of the Circinus galaxy, the nearest Seyfert. We target CO (1-0) in the region associated with a well-known multiphase outflow driven by the central active galactic nucleus (AGN). While the geometry of Circinus and its outflow make disentangling the latter difficult, we see indications of outflowing molecular gas at velocities consistent with the ionized outflow. We constrain the mass of the outflowing molecular gas to be 1.5e5 -5.1e6 solar masses, yielding a molecular outflow rate of 0.35-12.3 solar masses per year. The values within this …
Reverberation mapping (RM) of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) has been used over the past three decades to determine AGN broad-line region (BLR) sizes and central black-hole masses, and their relations with the AGN's luminosity. Until recently the sample of objects with RM data was limited to low-luminosity AGNs ($L_{\rm opt} \lesssim 10^{46}$ ergs s$^{-1}$) and low redshifts ($z \lesssim 0.5$). Here we present results from a reverberation-mapping project of some of the most luminous and highest redshift quasars that have been mapped to date. The study is based on almost twenty years of photomet…

As part of the QUADROS project to quantify the impact of AGN-driven outflows in rapidly evolving galaxies in the local universe, we present observations of 8 nearby ULIRGs ($0.04 < z < 0.2$) taken with the ISIS spectrograph on the \textit{William Herschel Telescope} (WHT), and also summarise the results of the project as a whole. Consistent with \cite{Rose2018}, we find that the outflow regions are compact (0.08 < $R_{[OIII]}$ < 1.5 kpc), and the electron densities measured using the [SII], [OII] trans-auroral emission-line ratios are relatively high (2.5 < log n$_{e}$(cm$^{-3}$) < 4.5, median…

We report new detections and limits from a NOEMA and ALMA CO(1-0) search for molecular outflows in 13 local galaxies with high FIR surface brightness, and combine with results from the literature. CO line ratios and outflow structure provide some constraints on the conversion from observables to quantities such as molecular mass outflow rates. Ratios between outflow emission in higher J CO transitions and in CO(1-0) typically are consistent with excitation Ri1<~1. For IRAS 13120-5453, however, R31=2.10 indicates optically thin CO in the outflow. Like much of the outflow literature, we use alph…

(Abridged) We present simultaneous optical--to--X-ray spectral energy distributions (SEDs) from Swift's X-ray and UV--optical telescopes (XRT and UVOT) for a well-selected sample of 26 low-redshift (z<0.1) AGN from the Swift/BAT 9-month catalogue, the largest well-studied, hard X-ray selected survey of local AGN to date. Our subsample consists of AGN with low intrinsic X-ray absorption (N_H<10^22 cm^-2) and minimal spectral complexity, to more accurately recover the intrinsic accretion luminosity in these sources. We perform a correction for host galaxy contamination in all available UVOT filt…
Several authors have claimed that the less luminous active galactic nuclei (AGN) are not capable of sustaining the dusty torus structure. Thus, a gradual re-sizing of the torus is expected when the AGN luminosity decreases. Our aim is to confront mid-infrared observations of local AGN of different luminosities with this scenario. We decomposed about ~100 IRS/Spitzer spectra of LLAGN and powerful Seyferts in order to decontaminate the torus component from other contributors. We have used the affinity propagation (AP) method to cluster the data into five groups within the sample according to tor…
X-ray luminosity functions (XLFs) of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) trace the growth and evolution of supermassive black hole populations across cosmic time, however, current XLF models are poorly constrained at redshifts of z>6, with a lack of spectroscopic constraints at these high redshifts. In this work we \redit{place limits} on the bright-end of the XLF at z=5.7-6.4 using high-redshift AGN identified within the Extragalactic Serendipitous Swift Survey (ExSeSS) catalogue. Within ExSeSS we find one serendipitously X-ray detected z>6 AGN, ATLAS J025.6821-33.4627, with an X-ray luminosity of $…
We use mid-infrared spectroscopy of unobscured active galactic nuclei (AGNs) to reveal their native dusty environments. We concentrate on Seyfert 1 galaxies, observing a sample of 31 with the Infrared Spectrograph aboard the Spitzer Space Telescope, and compare them with 21 higher-luminosity quasar counterparts. Silicate dust reprocessing dominates the mid-infrared spectra, and we generally measure the 10 and 18 micron spectral features weakly in emission in these galaxies. The strengths of the two silicate features together are sensitive to the dust distribution. We present numerical radiativ…
The AGN. I examine the average spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of two samples of the most powerful, unobscured QSOs at 2<z<3.5, with rest frame optical luminosities in the 46.2<log vLv(5100Ang)<47.4 range, corresponding to the tail of the 2<z<4 QSO optical luminosity function. I find that the AGN could potentially account for the entire broad-band emission from the UV to the submm, on the basis that the SEDs of these sources are similar to the intrinsic AGN SEDs derived for lower power, lower redshift QSOs. Although this does not preclude substantial star-formation in their host galaxies,…

In this paper, we provide updated constraints on the bolometric quasar luminosity function (QLF) from $z=0$ to $z=7$. The constraints are based on an observational compilation that includes observations in the rest-frame IR, B band, UV, soft and hard X-ray in past decades. Our method follows Hopkins et al. 2007 with an updated quasar SED model and bolometric and extinction corrections. The new best-fit bolometric quasar luminosity function behaves qualitatively different from the Hopkins et al. 2007 model at high redshift. Compared with the old model, the number density normalization decreases…
Within the MOJAVE VLBA program (Monitoring of Jets in AGN with VLBA Experiments), we have accumulated observational data at 15 GHz for hundreds of jets in $γ$-ray bright active galactic nuclei since the beginning of the Fermi scientific observations in August 2008. We investigated a time delay between the flux density of AGN parsec-scale radio emission at 15 GHz and 0.1$-$300 GeV Fermi LAT photon flux, taken from constructed light curves using weekly and adaptive binning. The correlation analysis shows that radio is lagging $γ$-ray radiation by up to 8 months in the observer's frame, while in …
In the unified scheme of active galactic nuclei, a dusty torus absorbs and then reprocesses a fraction of the intrinsic luminosity which is emitted at longer wavelengths. Thus, subject to radiative transfer corrections, the fraction of the sky covered by the torus as seen from the central source (known as the covering factor $f_c$) can be estimated from the ratio of the infrared to the bolometric luminosities of the source as $f_c=L_{\rm torus}/L_{\rm Bol}$. However, the uncertainty in determining $L_{\rm Bol}$ has made the estimation of covering factors by this technique difficult, especially…
The discovery of 3C 273 in 1963, and the emergence of the Kerr solution shortly thereafter, precipitated the current era in astrophysics focused on using black holes to explain active galactic nuclei (AGN). But while partial success was achieved in separately explaining the bright nuclei of some AGN via thin disks, as well as powerful jets with thick disks, the combination of both powerful jets in an AGN with a bright nucleus, such as in 3C 273, remained elusive. Although numerical simulations have taken center stage in the last 25 years, they have struggled to produce the conditions that expl…
We report the discovery of an exceptional MIR flare in a Type 2 AGN, SDSS J165726.81+234528.1, at $z=0.059$. This object brightened by 3 mag in the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) $W1$ and $W2$ bands between 2015 and 2017 (and is fading since 2018), without significant changes ($\lesssim$ 0.2 mag) in the optical over the same period of time. Based on the WISE light curves and near-IR imaging, the flare is more significant at longer wavelengths, suggesting an origin of hot dust emission. The estimated black hole mass ($\sim 10^{6.5}\,M_\odot$) from different methods places its peak b…
