Charged particle production is calculated in a hybrid framework consisting of the IP-Glasma initial state, MUSIC viscous relativistic fluid dynamics, and the UrQMD microscopic hadronic cascade. Using one set of parameters, we compute observables for a large variety of collision systems. We compare to experimental data in p+p, p+Pb, Xe+Xe, Au+Au and Pb+Pb collisions at various energies, and make predictions for potential O+O runs at RHIC and LHC.
We show how the measurement of appropriately constructed particle-energy/momentum correlations allows access to the bulk viscosity of strongly interacting hadron matter in heavy ion collisions. This measurement can be performed by the LHC and RHIC experiments in events with high-particle multiplicity, following up on existing estimates of the shear viscosity based on elliptic flow.
We study the effects of bulk viscosity on pT spectra and elliptic flow in heavy ion collisions. For this purpose we compute the dissipative correction df to the single particle distribution functions in leading-log QCD, and in several simplified models. We consider, in particular, the relaxation time approximation and a kinetic model for the hadron resonance gas. We implement these distribution functions in a hydrodynamic simulation of Au + Au collisions at RHIC. We find significant corrections due to bulk viscosity in hadron pT spectra and the differential elliptic flow parameter v2(pT). Thes…
A theoretical framework for the calculation of shear and bulk viscosities of hadronic matter at finite temperature is presented. The framework is based on the quasi-particle picture. It allows for an arbitrary number of hadron species with point-like interactions, and allows for both elastic and inelastic collisions. Detailed balance is ensured. The particles have temperature dependent masses arising from mean field or potential effects, which maintains self-consistency between the equation of state and the transport coefficients. As an example, we calculate the shear and bulk viscosity in the…
Comparison of heavy-ion experiments to fluid dynamics simulations requires the conversion of the fluid to particles. Extending the approach in Molnar & Wolff, PRC 95, 024903 (2017), this work presents self-consistent bulk viscous corrections from kinetic theory for a one-component system with isotropic $2\to 2$ interactions. The phase space corrections are contrasted to the Grad ansatz and also to corrections obtained from the relaxation time approximation. In addition, the bulk viscosity of the system is calculated and compared with the Grad result, as well as the $ζ\propto (1 - 3 c_s^2)^2 η$…
We study the regularities in the multiparticle production data obtained from different types of collisions indicating the universality of the hadroproduction process. The similarities of such bulk variables like the charged particle mean multiplicity and the pseudorapidity density at midrapidity measured in nucleus-nucleus, (anti)proton-proton and e+e- interactions are analysed according to the dissipating energy of participants and their types. This approach shows a good agreement with the measurements in a wide range of nuclear collision energies from AGS to RHIC. The predictions up to the L…
We discuss transport properties of dynamical fluid composed of quasi-particles whose masses depend on temperature and charge chemical potentials. Based on the relativistic kinetic theory formulated under the relaxation time approximation, we derive a general expression for the bulk viscosity in the quasi-particle medium. We show that dynamically generated particle masses imply an essential modification of the fluid compressibility. As an application of our results we consider a class of quasi-particle models with the chiral phase transition belonging to O(4) and Z(2) universality class. Based …
We investigate particle spectra and elliptic flow coefficients in relativistic heavy ion collisions by taking into account the distortion of phase space distributions due to bulk viscosity at freezeout. We first calculate the distortion of phase space distributions in a multi-component system within the Grad's fourteen moment method. We find some subtle issues when one matches macroscopic variables with microscopic momentum distributions in a multi-component system and develop a consistent procedure to uniquely determine the corrections in the phase space distributions. Next, we calculate part…
In this paper we present two quantum field theoretical analyses on the shear and bulk relaxation times. First, we discuss how to find Kubo formulas for the shear and the bulk relaxation times. Next, we provide results on the shear viscosity relaxation time obtained within the diagrammatic approach for the massless $λϕ^4$ theory.
We introduce the Statistical Hadronization with Resonances (SHARE) suite of programs and perform a study of particle multiplicities as well as bulk thermodynamic quantities for the RHIC Au--Au reactions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=130$ GeV. We also show that the statistical hadronization model, with parameters fitted to match pion, proton and hyperon ratios, in turn correctly and consistently reproduces rapidity particle multiplicity.
A temperature dependent bulk viscosity coefficient is used in 3+1D hydrodynamic simulations. I study the effect of the increase of bulk viscosity around the critical temperature on the system dynamics in central Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2760$~GeV. With increasing bulk viscosity the life-time of the system increases slightly. Also the shape of the freeze-out hypersurface changes, the outer layers of the fireball live longer. This effect causes a small reduction of the ratio of two interferometry radii $R_{out}/R_{side}$, improving the agreement with experimental data.
Search for the conjectured QCD critical point is one of the major scientific goals for the Beam Energy Scan program at RHIC. The growth of the correlation length is a universal feature for systems near criticality, and bulk viscosity exhibits the strongest dependence on the correlation length. We investigate its effects using a relativistic hydrodynamic model to find that rapidity distributions of charged particles and net baryon number are visibly modified if the fireball passes through the vicinity of the QCD critical point on the phase diagram. We also discuss how critical modification of d…
The bulk viscosity determines dissipation during hydrodynamic expansion. It vanishes in scale invariant fluids, while a nonzero value quantifies the deviation from scale invariance. For the dilute Fermi gas the bulk viscosity is given exactly by the correlation function of the contact density of local pairs. As a consequence, scale invariance is broken purely by pair fluctuations. These fluctuations give rise also to logarithmic terms in the bulk viscosity of the high-temperature nondegenerate gas. For the quantum degenerate regime I report numerical Luttinger-Ward results for the contact corr…
In this work, we study the arising of correlations among some isoscalar ($K_o$, $Q_o$, and $I_o$) and isovector ($J$, $L_o$, $K_{sym}^o$, $Q_{sym}^o$, and $I_{sym}^o$) bulk parameters in nonrelativistic and relativistic hadronic mean-field models. For the former, we investigate correlations in Skyrme and Gogny parametrizations, as well as in the nonrelativistic (NR) limit of relativistic point-coupling models. We provide analytical correlations among bulk parameters for the NR limit, discussing the conditions in which they are linear ones. Based on a recent study [B. M. Santos et al., Phys. Re…
We study the propagation of heavy quarks (HQs) in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) by means of a relativistic Boltzmann transport (RBT) approach. The non-perturbative interaction between heavy quarks and light quarks is described by means of a quasi-particle approach able to describe simultaneously the experimental data for the nuclear suppression factor $R_{\rm AA}$ and the elliptic flow $v_2(p_T)$ of D mesons from RHIC to LHC energies. In the same framework we predict the B meson nuclear modification factor at LHC. Finally, we discuss the relevance of initial state fluctuations that allows to ex…
We derive a system of moment-based dynamical equations that describe the 1+1d space-time evolution of a cylindrically symmetric massive gas undergoing boost-invariant longitudinal expansion. Extending previous work, we introduce an explicit degree of freedom associated with the bulk pressure of the system. The resulting form generalizes the ellipsoidal one-particle distribution function appropriate for massless particles to massive particles. Using this generalized form, we obtain a system of partial differential equations that can be solved numerically. In order to assess the performance of t…
Bulk and single-particle properties of hot hyperonic matter are studied within the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approximation extended to finite temperature. The bare interaction in the nucleon sector is the Argonne V18 potential supplemented with an effective three-body force to reproduce the saturating properties of nuclear matter. The modern Nijmegen NSC97e potential is employed for the hyperon-nucleon and hyperon-hyperon interactions. The effect of the temperature on the in-medium effective interaction is found to be, in general, very small and the single-particle potentials differ by at most 25…
The present work starts by providing a clear identification of correlations between critical parameters ($T_c$, $P_c$, $ρ_c$) and bulk quantities at zero temperature of relativistic mean-field models (RMF) presenting third and fourth order self-interactions in the scalar field $σ$. Motivated by the nonrelativistic version of this RMF model, we show that effective nucleon mass ($M^*$) and incompressibility ($K_o$), at the saturation density, are correlated with $T_c$, $P_c$, and $ρ_c$, as well as, binding energy and saturation density itself. We verify agreement of results with previous theoret…
In order to compare theoretical calculations of thermal fluctuations of conserved quantities, such as charge susceptibilities or the specific heat, to experimentally measured correlations and fluctuations in heavy ion collisions, one must confront the reality of changing conditions within the collision environment, and transport of conserved quantities within the finite duration of the expansion and dissolution of the reaction. In previous work, fluctuations of conserved charges from lattice calculations, where charge is allowed to fluctuate within the designated volume consistent with the gra…
The particle spectra and Hanbury-Brown Twiss (HBT) radius of Au+Au collisions at RHIC energy are investigated by a hydrodynamical expanding source with both shear and bulk viscosities ($ζ$). With a large width of the ratio of $ζ$ to entropy density $s$, both the particle transverse momentum spectra and the ratio $R_{out}/R_{side}$ of HBT radii in the direction of the total transverse momentum of detected two particles ($R_{out}$) and perpendicular to both this direction and the beam direction ($R_{side}$) become a little steeper.
