We experimentally study subradiance in a dilute cloud of ultracold rubidium (Rb) atoms where $n λ_a^3 \approx 10^{-2}$ ($n$: atomic density, $λ_a$ excitation wavelength) and the on-resonance optical depth of the cloud is of order unity. We show that in the strong excitation regime, the subradiant time-scales depend on the excitation fraction of the cloud; i.e., to the intensity of the excitation pulse. In this regime, the decay dynamics are highly complicated and there is not a single decay time-constant. Instead, the decay time constant varies during the dynamics. Specifically, we were able to observe signatures of superradiant-to-subradiant transition; i. e., initially the decay rate is faster than independent decay (superradiant emission), while at later times it transitions to slower (subradiant emission). We also discuss a theoretical model whose numerical results are in good agreement with the experiments.
In super- or subradiance, a quantum superposition of excited atoms collectively emits a photon much more or much less rapidly than an isolated atom. Superradiant and subradiant lifetimes have been derived for finite spheres of uniform media, either by simulating random samples or by expanding in spherical harmonics and analyzing Bessel functions. We introduce a simple regulator that applies to unbounded media, enabling trivial derivation and analysis of lifetimes via elementary Fourier techniques. The regulator can be interpreted as a correlation length for atomic positions; the regularized sy…
We develop a formalism for modelling exact time dynamics in waveguide quantum electrodynamics (QED) using the real-space approach. The formalism does not assume any specific configuration of emitters and allows the study of Markovian dynamics fully analytically and non-Markovian dynamics semi-analytically with a simple numerical integration step. We use the formalism to study subradiance, superradiance and bound states in continuum. We discuss new phenomena such as subdivision of collective decay rates into symmetric and anti-symmetric subsets and non-Markovian superradiance effects that can l…
Superradiance and subradiance are collective effects that emerge from coherent interactions between quantum emitters. Due to their many-body nature, theoretical studies of extended samples with length larger than the atomic transition wavelength are usually restricted to their early time behavior or to the few-excitation limit. We use herein a mean-field approach to reduce the complex many-body system to an effective two-atom master equation that includes all correlations up to second order and that can be numerically propagated in time. We find that three-dimensional and two-dimensional inver…
We investigate collective radiant properties of two separated atoms in X-type quantum states. We show that quantum correlations measured by quantum discord (QD) can induce and enhance superradiance and subradiance in the two-atom system even though in the absence of interatomic quantum entanglement. We also explore quantum statistical properties of photons in the superradiance and subradiance by addressing the second-order correlation function. In particular, when the initial state of the two separated atoms is the Werner state with non-zero QD, we find that radiation photons in the superradia…
Light-matter interacting quantum systems manifest strong correlations that lead to distinct cooperative spontaneous emissions of subradiance or superradiance. To demonstrate the essence of long-range correlations in such systems, we consider an atomic array under the resonant dipole-dipole interactions (RDDI) and apply an interpretable machine learning with the integrated gradients to identify the crossover between the subradiant and superradiant sectors. The machine shows that the next nearest-neighbor couplings in RDDI play as much as the roles of nearest-neighbor ones in determining the who…
We discuss a protocol for the analogue quantum simulation of superradiance and subradiance using a linear chain of N trapped qubit ions with a single sympathetic cooling ion. We develop a simple analytic model that shows the dynamics of the qubit subspace converge to those of a cloud undergoing Dicke superradiance and subradiance. We provide numerical simulations of the full ion chain and show that they converge to the dynamics predicted by our analytic model with no fitting parameters. We also map out the parameter regime needed to reach this convergence.
Recent work has shown that collective single photon emission from an ensemble of resonate two-level atoms, i.e. single photon superradiance, is a rich field of study. The present paper addresses the flip side of superradiance, i.e. subradiance. Single photon subradiant states are potentially stable against collective spontaneous emission and can have ultrafast readout. In particular it is shown how many atom collective effects provide a new way to control spontaneous emission by preparing and switching between subradiant and superradiant states.
We report a time-resolved study of collective emission in dense ensembles of two-level atoms. We compare, on the same sample, the build-up of superradiance and subradiance from the ensemble when driven by a strong laser. This allows us to measure the dynamics of the population of superradiant and subradiant states as a function of time. In particular we demonstrate the build up in time of subradiant states through the superradiant dynamics. This illustrates the dynamics of the many-body density matrix of superradiant ensembles of two-level atoms when departing from the ideal conditions of Dick…
Super- and subradiance are usually described in the framework of Dicke collective states, which is an ``atomic picture'' in which the electromagnetic field only provides an effective interaction between the atoms. Here, we discuss a complementary picture, in which we describe the propagation and scattering of light in the atomic medium, which provides a complex susceptibility and scatterers. This ``optical picture'' is valid in the linear-optics regime for disordered samples and is mainly relevant at low density, when the susceptibility and scattering cross-section can be computed from simple …
Dicke superradiance has been observed in many systems and is based on constructive interferences between many scattered waves. The counterpart of this enhanced dynamics, subradiance, is a destructive interference effect leading to the partial trapping of light in the system. In contrast to the robust superradiance, subradiant states are fragile and spurious decoherence phenomena hitherto obstructed the observation of such metastable states. We show that a dilute cloud of cold atoms is an ideal system to look for subradiance in free space and study various mechanisms to control this subradiance…
The transversely confined propagating modes of an optical fiber mediate virtually infinite range energy exchanges among atoms placed within their field, which adds to the inherent free space dipole-dipole coupling. Typically, the single atom free space decay rate largely surpasses the emission rate into the guided fiber modes. However, scaling up the atom number as well as the system size amounts to entering a collective emission regime, where fiber-induced superradiant spontaneous emission dominates over free space decay. We numerically study this super- and subradiant decay of highly excited…
We study numerically the slow (subradiant) decay of the fluorescence of motionless atoms after a weak pulsed excitation. We show that, in the linear-optics regime and for an excitation detuned by several natural linewidths, the slow decay rate can be dominated by close pairs of atoms (dimers) forming superradiant and subradiant states. However, for a large-enough resonant optical depth and at later time, the dynamics is dominated by collective many-body effects. In this regime, we study the polarization and the spectrum of the emitted light, as well as the spatial distribution of excitation in…
We theoretically investigate the emission properties of a single-mode cavity coupled to a mesoscopic number of incoherently pumped quantum emitters. We propose an operational measure for the medium cooperativity, valid both in the bad and in the good cavity regimes. We show that the opposite regimes of subradiance and superradiance correspond to negative and positive cooperativity, respectively. The lasing regime is shown to be characterized by nonnegative cooperativity. In the bad cavity regime we show that the cooperativity defines the transitions from subradiance to superradiance. In the go…
Collectivity in ensembles of atoms gives rise to effects like super- and subradiance. While superradiance is well studied and experimentally accessible, subradiance remains elusive since it is difficult to track experimentally as well as theoretically. Here we present a new type of phase transition in the resonantly driven, open Dicke model that leads to a deterministic generation of subradiant states. At the transition the system switches from a predominantly superradiant to a predominantly subradiant state. Clear experimental signatures for the effect are presented and entanglement propertie…
Since Dicke's seminal paper on coherence in spontaneous radiation by atomic ensembles, superradiance has been extensively studied. Subradiance, on the contrary, has remained elusive, mainly because subradiant states are weakly coupled to the environment and are very sensitive to nonradiative decoherence processes. Here we report the experimental observation of subradiance in an extended and dilute cold-atom sample containing a large number of particles. We use a far detuned laser to avoid multiple scattering and observe the temporal decay after a sudden switch-off of the laser beam. After the f…
On the basis of a quantum microscopic approach we study the dynamics of the afterglow of a dilute Gaussian atomic ensemble excited by pulsed radiation. Taking into account the vector nature of the electromagnetic field we analyze in detail the angular and polarization distribution of single-photon superradiance of such an ensemble. The dependence of the angular distribution of superradiance on the length of the pulse and its carrier frequency as well as on the size and the shape of the atomic clouds is studied. We show that there is substantial dependence of the superradiant emission on the po…
Experiments in dense, ultracold gases of rubidium Rydberg atoms show a considerable decrease of the radiative excited state lifetimes compared to dilute gases. This accelerated decay is explained by collective and cooperative effects, leading to superradiance. A novel formalism to calculate effective decay times in a dense Rydberg gas shows that for these atoms the decay into nearby levels increases by up to three orders of magnitude. Excellent agreement between theory and experiment follows from this treatment of Rydberg decay behavior.
The Dicke subradiance and superradiance resulting from the interaction between surface plasmons of a nanosphere and an ensemble of quantum emitters have been investigated using a Green function approach. Based on such an investigation, we propose a scheme for a deterministic multiqubit quantum phase gate. As an example, twoqubit, threequbit, and fourqubit quantum phase gates have been designed and analyzed in detail. Phenomena due to the losses in the metal are discussed. Potential applications of these phenomena to quantuminformation processing are anticipated.
We show that the onset of steady-state superradiance in a bad cavity laser is preceded by a dissipative phase transition between two distinct phases of steady-state subradiance. The transition is marked by a non-analytic behavior of the cavity output power and the mean atomic inversion, as well as a discontinuity in the variance of the collective atomic inversion. In particular, for repump rates below a critical value, the cavity output power is strongly suppressed and does not increase with the atom number, while it scales linearly with atom number above this value. Remarkably, we find that t…
We study the superradiant evolution of a set of $N$ two-level systems spontaneously radiating under the effect of phase-breaking mechanisms. We investigate the dynamics generated by non-radiative losses and pure dephasing, and their interplay with spontaneous emission. Our results show that in the parameter region relevant to many solid-state cavity quantum electrodynamics experiments, even with a dephasing rate much faster than the radiative lifetime of a single two-level system, a sub-optimal collective superfluorescent burst is still observable. We also apply our theory to the dilute excita…
Starting from the paradigmatic spin-boson model (SBM), we investigate the static and dynamical properties of a system of two distant two-level emitters coupled to a one-dimensional Ohmic waveguide beyond the rotating wave approximation. Employing static and dynamical polaron Ansätze we study the effects of finite separation distance on the behavior of the photon-mediated Ising-like interaction, qubit frequency renormalization, ground-state magnetization, and entanglement entropy of the two-qubit system. Based on previous works we derive an effective approximate Hamiltonian for the two-impurity…
Superradiance and subradiance concerning enhanced and inhibited collective radiation of an ensemble of atoms have been a central topic in quantum optics. However, precise generation and control of these states remain challenging. Here we deterministically generate up to 10-qubit superradiant and 8-qubit subradiant states, each containing a single excitation, in a superconducting quantum circuit with multiple qubits interconnected by a cavity resonator. The $\sqrt{N}$-scaling enhancement of the coupling strength between the superradiant states and the cavity is validated. By applying appropriat…
Weakly bound molecules have physical properties without atomic analogues, even as the bond length approaches dissociation. In particular, the internal symmetries of homonuclear diatomic molecules result in formation of two-body superradiant and subradiant excited states. While superradiance has been demonstrated in a variety of systems, subradiance is more elusive due to the inherently weak interaction with the environment. Here we characterize the properties of deeply subradiant molecular states with intrinsic quality factors exceeding $10^{13}$ via precise optical spectroscopy with the longe…
We study the quantum dynamics of two quantum dots (QDs) or artificial atoms coupled through the fundamental localized plasmon of a gold nanorod resonator. We derive an intuitive and efficient time-local master equation, in which the effect of the metal nanorod is taken into consideration self-consistently using a quasinormal mode (QNM) expansion technique of the photon Green function. Our efficient QNM technique offers an alternative and more powerful approach over the standard Jaynes-Cummings model, where the radiative decay, nonradiative decay, and spectral reshaping effect of the electromag…
