We study Reeb dynamics on the three-sphere equipped with a tight contact form and an anti-contact involution. We prove the existence of a symmetric periodic orbit and provide necessary and sufficient conditions for it to bound an invariant disk-like global surface of section. We also study the same questions under the presence of additional symmetry and obtain similar results in this case. The proofs make use of pseudoholomorphic curves in symplectizations. As applications, we study Birkhoff's conjecture on disk-like global surfaces of section in the planar circular restricted three-body problem and the existence of symmetric closed Finsler geodesics on the two-sphere. We also present applications to some classical Hamiltonian systems.
We show that there are Reeb flows on the standard, tight three-sphere that do not admit global surfaces of section with one boundary component. In particular, the Reeb flows that we construct do not admit disk-like global surfaces of section. These Reeb flows are constructed using integrable systems, and a connected sum construction that extends the integrable system.
We characterize which closed Reeb orbits of a dynamically convex contact form on the 3-sphere bound disk-like global surfaces of section for the Reeb flow, without any genericity assumptions. We show that these global surfaces of section come in families, organized as open book decompositions. As an application we obtain new global surfaces of section for the Hamiltonian dynamics on strictly convex 3-dimensional energy levels.
We prove that there exist periodic orbits on almost all compact regular energy levels of a Hamiltonian function defined on a twisted cotangent bundle over the two-sphere. As a corollary, given any Riemannian two-sphere and a magnetic field on it, there exists a closed magnetic geodesic for almost all kinetic energy levels.
We consider Reeb dynamics on the 3-sphere associated to a tight contact form. Our main result gives necessary and sufficient conditions for a periodic Reeb orbit to bound a disk-like global section for the Reeb flow, when the contact form is assumed to be non-degenerate.
We consider magnetic Tonelli Hamiltonian systems on the cotangent bundle of the 2-sphere, where the magnetic form is not necessarily exact. It is known that, on very low and on high energy levels, these systems may have only finitely many periodic orbits. Our main result asserts that almost all energy levels in a precisely characterized intermediate range $(e_0,e_1)$ possess infinitely many periodic orbits. Such a range of energies is non-empty, for instance, in the physically relevant case where the Tonelli Lagrangian is a kinetic energy and the magnetic form is oscillating (in which case, $e…
This paper gives an analysis of the movement of n vortices on the sphere. When the vortices have equal circulation, there is a polygonal solution that rotates uniformly around its center. The main result concerns the global existence of relative periodic solutions that emerge from this polygonal relative equilibrium. In addition, it is proved that the families of relative periodic solutions contain dense sets of choreographies.
We show that the existence of one simple closed Reeb orbit of a particular type (a symplectically degenerate maximum) forces the Reeb flow to have infinitely many periodic orbits. We use this result to give a different proof of a recent theorem of Cristofaro-Gardiner and Hutchings asserting that every Reeb flow on the standard contact three-sphere has at least two periodic orbits. Our methods are based on adapting the machinery originally developed for proving the Hamiltonian Conley conjecture to the contact setting.
We consider the space of degree $n\ge 2$ rational maps of the Riemann sphere with $k$ distinct marked periodic orbits of given periods. First, we show that this space is irreducible. For $k=2n-2$ and with some mild restrictions on the periods of the marked periodic orbits, we show that the multipliers of these periodic orbits, considered as algebraic functions on the above mentioned space, are algebraically independent over $\mathbb C$. Equivalently, this means that at its generic point, the moduli space of degree $n$ rational maps can be locally parameterized by the multipliers of any $2n-2$ …
We prove that every sectional Anosov flow (or, equivalently, every sectional-hyperbolic attracting set of a flow) on a compact manifold has a periodic orbit. This extends the previous three-dimensional result obtained in [Existence of periodic orbits for singular-hyperbolic sets].
We investigate the existence of periodic trajectories of a particle, subject to a central force, which can hit a sphere, or a cylinder. We will provide also a Landesman-Lazer type of condition in the case of a nonlinearity satisfying a double resonance condition. Afterwards, we will show how such a result can be adapted to obtain a new result for the impact oscillator at double resonance.
We introduce a new critical value $c_\infty(L)$ for Tonelli Lagrangians $L$ on the tangent bundle of the 2-sphere without minimizing measures supported on a point. We show that $c_\infty(L)$ is strictly larger than the Mañé critical value $c(L)$, and on every energy level $e\in(c(L),c_\infty(L))$ there exist infinitely many periodic orbits of the Lagrangian system of $L$, one of which is a local minimizer of the free-period action functional. This has applications to Finsler metrics of Randers type on the 2-sphere. We show that, under a suitable criticality assumption on a given Randers metric…
Let $f:S^2\to S^2$ be a continuous map such that $deg f = d, |d|>1$. Suppose $f$ has two attracting fixed points denoted $N$ and $S$ and let $A=S^2\setminus \{N,S\}$. Assume that if a loop $γ\subset f^{-1}(A)$ is homotopically trivial in $A$, then $f(γ)$ is also homotopically trivial in $A$. Then, for all $n$, $f$ has at least $|d^n -1|$ fixed points.
In this paper we study the dynamical billiards on a convex 2D sphere. We investigate some generic properties of the convex billiards on a general convex sphere. We prove that $C^\infty$ generically, every periodic point is either hyperbolic or elliptic with irrational rotation number. Moreover, every hyperbolic periodic point admits some transverse homoclinic intersections. A new ingredient in our approach is that we use Herman's result on Diophantine invariant curves to prove the nonlinear stability of elliptic periodic points for a dense subset of convex billiards.
We prove that every finitely-generated group of homeomorphisms of the 2-dimensional sphere all of whose elements have a finite order which is a power of 2 and so that there exists a uniform bound for the order of group elements is finite. We prove a similar result for groups of area-preserving homeomorphisms without the hypothesis that the orders of group elements are powers of 2 provided there is an element of even order.
We establish some new existence results for global surfaces of section of dynamically convex Reeb flows on the three-sphere. These sections often have genus, and are the result of a combination of pseudo-holomorphic curve methods with some elementary ergodic methods.
We study chaotic plane sections of some particular family of triply periodic surfaces. The question about possible behavior of such sections was posed by S. P. Novikov. We prove some estimations on the diffusion rate of these sections using the connection between Novikov's problem and systems of isometries - some natural generalization of interval exchange transformations. Using thermodynamical formalism, we construct an invariant measure for systems of isometries of a special class called the Rauzy gasket, and investigate the main properties of the Lyapunov spectrum of the corresponding suspe…
In the present paper we construct a Z^{3}-periodic surface in R^{3} whose almost all plane sections of a certain direction consist of exactly one connected component. This question originates from a problem of Novikov on the semi- classical motion of an electron in strong magnetic field. Our main tool is the Rips machine algorighm for band complexes.
Some years ago, V. Markovic proved that there is no section of the Mapping Class Group for a closed surface of genus g larger than 5 (in the case of homeomorphims) and more recently generalized this result with D. Saric to the case where g is larger than 1. We will state a periodicity criterion and will use it to simplify some of the arguments given by Markovic and Saric in the proof of their theorem. The periodicity criterion tells us that a homeomorphism of a connected surface must be periodic if the set of connected periodic open sets generates the topology of the surface.
We introduce and prove numerous new results about the orbits of the $T$-fractal billiard. Specifically, in Section 3, we give a variety of sufficient conditions for the existence of a sequence of compatible periodic orbits. In Section 4, we examine the limiting behavior of particular sequences of compatible periodic orbits and, more interesting, in Section 5, the limiting behavior of a particular sequence of compatible singular orbits. The latter seems to indicate that the classification of orbits may not be so straightforward. Additionally, sufficient conditions for the existence of particula…
The paper consists of two sections. In Section 1, we give a short review of KAM theory with an emphasis on Whitney smooth families of invariant tori in typical Hamiltonian and reversible systems. In Section 2, we prove a KAM-type result for non-autonomous reversible systems (depending quasi-periodically on time) within the almost unexplored reversible context 2. This context refers to the situation where dim Fix G < (1/2) codim T, here Fix G is the fixed point manifold of the reversing involution G and T is the invariant torus one deals with.
In this paper we study the global dynamics of piecewise smooth vector fields defined in the two dimensional torus and sphere. We provide conditions under these families exhibits periodic and dense trajectories and we describe some global bifurcations. We also study its minimal sets and characterize the chaotic behavior of the piecewise smooth vector fields defined in torus and sphere.
We show that all GL(2, R)-equivariant point markings over orbit closures of primitive genus two translation surfaces arise from marking pairs of points exchanged by the hyperelliptic involution, Weierstrass points, or the golden points in the golden eigenform locus. As corollaries, we classify the holomorphically varying families of points over orbifold covers of genus two Hilbert modular surfaces, solve the finite blocking problem on genus two translation surfaces, and show that there is at most one nonarithmetic rank two orbit closure in the minimal stratum in genus four.
In this paper, we show that any topologically transitive Anosov flow on a closed three-dimensional manifold with the orientable weak stable and unstable foliations turns into an R-covered one by a Goodman-Fried surgery along periodic points. When a Birkhoff section of the Anosov flow is given, we can choose the periodic points from the boundary of the Birkhoff section.
We expand the cross section of the geodesic flow in the tangent bundle of the modular surface given by Series to produce another section whose return map under the geodesic flow is a double cover of the natural extension of the Farey map. We use this cross section to extend the correspondence between the closed geodesics on the modular surface and the periodic points of the Gauss map to include the periodic points of the Farey map. Then, analogous to the work of Pollicott, we prove an equidistribution result for the periodic points of the Farey map when they are ordered according to the length…
A group $Γ$ is said to be periodic if for any $g$ in $Γ$ there is a positive integer $n$ with $g^n=id$. We first prove that a finitely generated periodic group acting on the 2-sphere $\SS^2$ by $C^1$-diffeomorphisms with a finite orbit, is finite and conjugate to a subgroup of $\mathrm{O}(3,\R)$ and we use it for proving that a finitely generated periodic group of spherical diffeomorphisms with even bounded orders is finite. Finally, we show that a finitely generated periodic group of homeomorphisms of any orientable compact surface other than the 2-sphere or the 2-torus (which is the purpose …
