The minimal Starobinsky supergravity with the inflaton (scalaron) and the goldstino in a massive vector supermultiplet is coupled to the dilaton-axion chiral superfield with the no-scale Kähler potential and a superpotential. The Kachru-Kallosh-Linde-Trivedi (KKLT)-type mechanism in the presence of a constant term in the superpotential is applied to stabilize the dilaton/axion during inflation, and it is shown to lead to an instability. The instability is cured by adding the alternative Fayet-Iliopoulos (FI) term that does not lead to the gauged $R$-symmetry. Other stabilization mechanisms, based on the Wess-Zumino (WZ)-type superpotential, are also studied in the presence of the FI term. A possible connection to a D3-brane is briefly discussed too.
We investigate the production of primordial black holes and their contribution to the presently observed dark matter in a dilaton two-field extension of Starobinsky's quadratic $f(R)$ model of inflation. The model features a multi-field amplification mechanism which leads to the generation of a sharp peak in the inflationary power spectrum at small wavelengths responsible for the production of primordial black holes. This mechanism is significantly different from single-field models and requires a stochastic treatment during an intermediate phase of the inflationary dynamics. We find that the …
Polonyi-Starobinsky (PS) supergravity is the N=1 supergravity model of Starobinsky inflation with spontaneous supersymmetry breaking (after inflation) due to Polonyi superfield, and inflaton belonging to a massive vector supermultiplet. The PS model is used for an explicit realization of the (super-heavy) gravitino dark matter scenario in cosmology. We find a potential instability in this model, and offer a mechanism for its removal by adding a Fayet-Iliopoulos (FI) term.
We find new realizations of Volkov-Akulov-Starobinsky supergravity, i.e. Starobinsky inflationary models in supergravity coupled to a nilpotent superfield describing Volkov-Akulov goldstino. Our constructions are based on the no-scale Kähler potential $K=-3\log(T+\bar{T})$ for the inflaton field, and can describe de Sitter vacuum after inflation where supersymmetry is broken by the goldstino auxiliary component. In fact, we show that a more general class of models with $K=-α\log(T+\bar{T})$ for $3\leqα\lesssim 6.37$ can accomodate Starobinsky-like inflation with the universal prediction $n_s\s…
We discuss how Starobinsky-like inflation may emerge from dilaton dynamics in brane cosmology scenarios based on string theory, in which our universe is represented as a three-brane. The effective potential may acquire a constant term from a density of effectively point-like non-pertubative defects on the brane. Higher-genus corrections generate corrections to the effective potential that are exponentially damped at large field values, as in the Starobinsky model, but at a faster rate, leading to a smaller prediction for the tensor-to scalar perturbation ratio r. This may be compensated partia…
We construct a supergravity model whose scalar degrees of freedom arise from a chiral superfield and are solely a scalaron and an axion that is very heavy during the inflationary phase. The model includes a second chiral superfield $X$, which is subject however to the constraint $X^2=0$ so that it describes only a Volkov - Akulov goldstino and an auxiliary field. We also construct the dual higher - derivative model, which rests on a chiral scalar curvature superfield ${\cal R}$ subject to the constraint ${\cal R}^2=0$, where the goldstino dual arises from the gauge - invariant gravitino field …
A general structure of effective action in new chiral superfield model associated with $N=1$, $D=4$ supergravity is investigated. This model corresponds to finite quantum field theory and does not demand the regularization and renormalization at effective action calculation. It is shown that in local approximation the effective action is defined by two objects called general superfield effective lagrangian and chiral superfield effective lagrangian. A proper-time method is generalized for calculation of these two effective lagrangians in superfield manner. Power expansion of the effective acti…
We present a model for cosmological inflation based on a no-scale supergravity sector with an SU(2,1)/U(1) Kahler potential, a single modulus T and an inflaton superfield Phi described by a Wess-Zumino model with superpotential parameters (mu, lambda). This model yields a scalar spectral index n_s and a tensor-to-scalar ratio r that are compatible with the Planck measurements for values of lambda simeq mu/3M_P. For the specific choice lambda = mu/3M_P, the model is a no-scale supergravity realization of the R+R^2 Starobinsky model.
We discuss how the higher-derivative Starobinsky model of inflation originates from N=1 supergravity. It is known that, in the old-minimal supergravity description written by employing a chiral compensator in the superconformal framework, the Starobinsky model is equivalent to a no-scale model with F-term potential. We show that the Starobinsky model can also be originated within the so-called new-minimal supergravity, where a linear compensator superfield is employed. In this formulation, the Starobinsky model is equivalent to standard supergravity coupled to a massive vector multiplet whose …
The on-shell regularization of the one-loop divergences of supergravity theories is generalized to include a dilaton of the type occurring in effective field theories derived from superstring theory, and the superfield structure of the one-loop corrections is given. Field theory anomalies and quantum contributions to soft supersymmetry breaking are discussed. The latter are sensitive to the precise choice of couplings that generate Pauli-Villars masses, which in turn reflect the details of the underlying theory above the scale of the effective cut-off. With a view to the implementation the Gre…
The gauge-fixed action of a `spacetime-filling' D3-brane with dilaton-axion coupling is formulated in N=1 superspace. We investigate its symmetries by paying special attention to a possible non-linearly realized extra (hidden) supersymmetry, and emphasize the need of a linear superfield coupled to an abelian Chern-Simons superfield to represent a dilaton-axion supermultiplet in the off-shell manifestly supersymmetric approach.
We propose new supergravity models describing chaotic Linde- and Starobinsky-like inflation in terms of a single chiral superfield. The key ideas to obtain a positive vacuum energy during large field inflation are (i) stabilization of the real or imaginary partner of the inflaton by modifying a Kahler potential, and (ii) use of the crossing terms in the scalar potential originating from a polynomial superpotential. Our inflationary models are constructed by starting from the minimal Kahler potential with a shift symmetry, and are extended to the no-scale case. Our methods can be applied to mor…
An N=1 Poincare supergravity action, suitable for describing the Starobinsky inflation, is proposed. It extends f(R) gravity to supergravity in its old-minimal version. The action is parametrized by a single holomorphic potential and a single non-holomorphic potential, and can be dualized into the standard matter-coupled supergravity action, with the "matter" given by two chiral superfields. The action extends the earlier proposals for embedding the Starobinsky inflation into supergravity, and can be further generalized to include quantum corrections to the inflation. Our approach assumes the …
We present a novel realization of Starobinsky-type inflation within Supergravity using two chiral superfields. The proposed superpotential is inspired by induced-gravity models. The Kaehler potential contains two logarithmic terms, one for the inflaton T and one for the matter-like field S, parameterizing the SU(1,1)/U(1)x SU(2)/U(1) Kaehler manifold. The two factors have constant curvatures -m/n and 2/n2, where n, m are the exponents of T in the superpotential and Kaehler potential respectively, and 0<n2<=6. The inflationary observables depend on the ratio 2n/m only. Essentially they coincide…
We study three types of the old-minimal higher-derivative supergravity theories extending the $f(R)$ gravity, towards their use for the inflationary model building in supergravity, by using both superfields and their field components. In the curved superspace all those theories are described in terms of a single chiral scalar curvature superfeld $\mathcal{R}$. Each of those theories can be dualized into a matter-coupled supergravity without higher derivatives. The first type is parametrized by a single non-holomorphic potential $N(\mathcal{R},\bar{\mathcal{R}})$, and gives rise to the dual mat…
We study reheating processes and its cosmological consequences in the Starobinsky model embedded in the old-minimal supergravity. First, we consider minimal coupling between the gravity and matter sectors in the higher curvature theory, and transform it to the equivalent standard supergravity coupled to additional matter superfields. We then discuss characteristic decay modes of the inflaton and the reheating temperature $T_{\rm R}$. Considering a simple model of supersymmetry breaking sector, we estimate gravitino abundance from inflaton decay, and obtain limits on the masses of gravitino and…
We study production of gravitino and Polonyi particles in the minimal Starobinsky-Polonyi $\mathcal{N}=1$ supergravity with inflaton belonging to a massive vector supermultiplet. Our model has only one free parameter given by the scale of spontaneous SUSY breaking triggered by Polonyi chiral superfield. The vector supermultiplet generically enters the action non-minimally, via an arbitrary real function. This functon is chosen to generate the inflaton scalar potential of the Starobinsky model. Our supergravity model can be reformulated as an abelian supersymmetric gauge theory with the vector …

Recently an alternative description of 2d supergravities in terms of graded Poisson-Sigma models (gPSM) has been given. As pointed out previously by the present authors a certain subset of gPSMs can be interpreted as "genuine" supergravity, fulfilling the well-known limits of supergravity, albeit deformed by the dilaton field. In our present paper we show that precisely that class of gPSMs corresponds one-to-one to the known dilaton supergravity superfield theories presented a long time ago by Park and Strominger. Therefore, the unique advantages of the gPSM approach can be exploited for the l…
We discuss N=1 supergravity inflationary models based on two chiral multiplets, the inflaton and the goldstino superfield. Using superconformal methods for these models, we propose to replace the unconstrained chiral goldstino multiplet by the nilpotent one associated with non-linearly realized supersymmetry of the Volkov-Akulov type. In the new cosmological models, the sgoldstino is proportional to a bilinear combination of fermionic goldstinos. It does not acquire any vev, does nor require stabilization, and does not affect the cosmological evolution. We explain a universal relation of these…
We embed general $f(R)$ inflationary models in minimal supergravity plus matter, a single chiral superfield $Φ$, with or without another superfield $S$, via a Jordan frame Einstein+scalar description. In particular, inflationary models like a generalized Starobinsky one are analyzed and constraints on them are found. We also embed the related models of conformal inflation, also described as Jordan frame Einstein+scalar models, in particular the conformal inflation from the Higgs model, and analyze the inflationary constraints on them.
We propose the unified models of cosmological inflation, spontaneous SUSY breaking, and the dark energy (de Sitter vacuum) in $N=1$ supergravity with the dilaton-axion chiral superfield $T$ in the presence of an $N=1$ vector multiplet with the alternative Fayet-Iliopoulos term. By using the Kähler potential as $K=-α\log(T+\bar{T})$ and the superpotential as a sum of a constant and a linear term, we find that viable inflation is possible for $3\leqα\leqα_{\rm max}$ where $α_{\rm max}\approx 7.235$. Observations of the amplitude of primordial scalar perturbations fix the SUSY breaking scale in o…
We discuss how: (i) a dilaton/axion superfield can play the role of a Barbero-Immirzi field in four-dimensional conformal quantum supergravity theories, (ii) a fermionic component of such a dilaton/axion superfield may play the role of a Goldstino in the low-energy effective action obtained from a superstring theory with F-type global supersymmetry breaking, (iii) this global supersymmetry breaking is communicated to the gravitational sector via the supergravity coupling of the Goldstino, and (iv) such a scenario may be realized explicitly in a D-foam model with D-particle defects fluctuating …
We prove (in superspace) the equivalence between the higher-derivative N=1 supergravity, defined by a holomorphic function F of the chiral scalar curvature superfield, and the standard theory of a chiral scalar superfield with a chiral superpotential W, coupled to the (minimal) Poincare supergravity in four spacetime dimensions. The relation between the holomorphic functions F and W is found. It can be used as the technical framework for the possible scenario unifying the early Universe inflation and the present Universe acceleration. We speculate on the possible origin of our model as the eff…
The formulation of 2d-dilaton theories, like spherically reduced Einstein gravity, is greatly facilitated in a formulation as a first order theory with nonvanishing bosonic torsion. This is especially also true at the quantum level. The interpretation of superextensions as graded Poisson sigma models is found to cover generically all possible 2d supergravities. Superfields and thus superfluous auxiliary fields are avoided altogether. The procedure shows that generalizations of bosonic 2d models are highly ambiguous.
$N=2$ string theories are formulated in space-times with 2 space and 2 time dimensions. If the world-sheet matter system consists of 2 chiral superfields, the space-time is Kahler and the dynamics are those of anti-self-dual gravity. If instead one chiral superfield and one twisted chiral superfield are used, the space-time is a hermitian manifold with torsion and a dilaton. The string spectrum consists of a scalar, which is a potential $K$ determining the metric, torsion and dilaton. The dynamics imply that the curvature with torsion is anti-self-dual, and an action is found for the potential…
We propose a general mechanism for stabilizing the dilaton against runaway to weak coupling. The method is based on features of the effective superpotential which arise for supersymmetric gauge theories which are not asymptotically free. Consideration of the 2PI effective action for bilinear operators of matter and gauge superfields allows one to overcome the obstacles to constructing a nonvanishing superpotential.
We propose a new construction of the supergravity inflation as an UV completion of the Higgs-$R^2$ inflation. In the dual description of $R^2$-supergravity, we show that there appear dual chiral superfields containing the scalaron or sigma field in the Starobinsky inflation, which unitarizes the supersymmetric Higgs inflation with a large non-minimal coupling up to the Planck scale. We find that a successful slow-roll inflation is achievable in the Higgs-sigma field space, but under the condition that higher curvature terms are introduced to cure the tachyonic mass problems for spectator singl…
We describe in superspace a classical theory of two dimensional $(1,1)$ cosmological dilaton supergravity coupled to a massive superparticle. We give an exact non-trivial superspace solution for the compensator superfield that describes the supergravity, and then use this solution to construct a model of a two-dimensional supersymmetric black hole.
We elaborate a full superfield description of the interacting system of dynamical D=4, N=1 supergravity and dynamical superstring. As far as minimal formulation of the simple supergravity is used, such a system should contain as well the tensor (real linear) multiplet which describes the dilaton and the two-superform gauge field whose pull-back provides the Wess-Zumino term for the superstring. The superfield action is given by the sum of the Wess-Zumino action for D=4, N=1 superfield supergravity, the superfield action for the tensor multiplet in curved superspace and the Green-Schwarz supers…
We analyze the possibility of constructing a supersymmetric invariant that contains the $R^4$ term among its components as a superpotential term in type IIB on-shell superspace. We consider a scalar superpotential, i.e. an arbitrary holomorphic function of a chiral scalar superfield. In general, IIB superspace does not allow for the existence of chiral superfields, but the obstruction vanishes for a specific superfield, the dilaton superfield. This superfield contains all fields of type IIB supergravity among its components, and its existence is implied by the solution of the Bianchi identitie…
We examine duality transformations of supersymmetric and $κ$-symmetric Dp-brane actions in a general type II supergravity background where in particular the dilaton and the axion are supposed to not be zero or a constant but a general superfield. Due to non-constant dilaton and axion, we can explicitly show that the dilaton and the axion as well as the two 2-form gauge potentials transform as doublets under the $SL(2,R)$ transformation from the point of view of the world-volume field theory.
The formalism of graded Poisson-sigma models allows the construction of N=(2,2) dilaton supergravity in terms of a minimal number of fields. For the gauged chiral U(1) symmetry the full action, involving all fermionic contributions, is derived. The twisted chiral case follows by simple redefinition of fields. The equivalence of our approach to the standard second order one in terms of superfields is presented, although for the latter so far only the bosonic part of the action seems to have been available in the literature. It is shown how ungauged models can be obtained in a systematic way and…
Old-minimal $R+R^2$ supergravity has a $U(1)$ R-symmetry which rotates the chiral curvature superfield. We gauge this R-symmetry and study new interactions involving the gauge multiplet in the context of inflation and supersymmetry breaking. We construct models where supersymmetry and the R-symmetry are spontaneously broken during and after Starobinsky inflation, and one-loop gauge anomalies are cancelled by the Green--Schwarz mechanism which can also generate Standard Model gaugino masses. The hierarchy between the auxiliary fields, $\langle F\rangle\gtrsim\langle D\rangle$, leads to split ma…
We investigate the cosmological inflation in a class of supergravity models that are generalizations of non-supersymmetric $R^2$ models. Although such models have been extensively studied recently, especially after the launch of the PLANCK and BICEP2 data, the class of models that can be constructed has not been exhausted. In this note, working in a supergravity model that is a generalization of Cecotti's model, we show that the appearance of new superpotential terms, which are quadratic in the superfield $\, Λ$ that couples to the Ricci supermultiplet, alters substantially the form of the sca…
We shall develop a general technique to obtain the super heat kernel coefficients of an arbitrary second order operator in $N=1$ superspace. We focus on the space of conformal supergravity here but the method presented is equally applicable for other types of superspace. The first three coefficients which determine the one-loop divergence of the corresponding quantum theory will be calculated. As an application we shall present the one-loop logarithmic divergence of super Yang-Mills theory coupled to a string dilaton $S$. This is the first superfield calculation for SYM with a non-trivial gaug…
We describe in superspace a theory of a massive superparticle coupled to a version of two dimensional N=1 dilaton supergravity. The (1+1) dimensional supergravity is generated by the stress-energy of the superparticle, and the evolution of the superparticle is reciprocally influenced by the supergravity. We obtain exact superspace solutions for both the superparticle worldline and the supergravity fields. We use the resultant non-trivial compensator superfield solution to construct a model of a two-dimensional supersymmetric black hole.
Models with anomalous U(1) gauge symmetry contain various superfields which can have nonzero supersymmetry breaking auxiliary components providing the origin of soft terms in the visible sector, e.g. the U(1) vector superfield, the modulus or dilaton superfield implementing the Green-Schwarz anomaly cancellation mechanism, U(1)-charged but standard model singlet matter superfield required to cancel the Fayet-Iliopoulos term, and finally the supergravity multiplet. We examine the relative strength between these supersymmetry breaking components in a simple class of models, and find that various…
We compute the component field 4-dimensional N=1 supergravity Lagrangian that is obtained from a superfield Lagrangian in the U(1)_K formalism with a linear dilaton multiplet. All fermionic terms are presented. In a variety of important ways, our results generalize those that have been reported previously, and are flexible enough to accomodate many situations of phenomenological interest in string-inspired effective supergravity, especially models based on orbifold compactifications of the weakly-coupled heterotic string. We provide for an effective theory of hidden gaugino and matter condensa…
We discuss duality between the linear and chiral dilaton formulations, in the presence of super-Yang-Mills instanton corrections to the effective action. In contrast to previous work on the subject, our approach appeals directly to explicit instanton calculations and does not rely on the introduction of an auxiliary Veneziano-Yankielowicz superfield. We discuss duality in the case of an axion that has a periodic scalar potential, and find that the bosonic fields of the dual linear multiplet have a modified interpretation. We note that symmetries of the axion potential manifest themselves as sy…
We consider N=1 supersymmetric renormalization group flows of N=4 Yang-Mills theory from the perspective of ten-dimensional IIB supergravity. We explicitly construct the complete ten-dimensional lift of the flow in which exactly one chiral superfield becomes massive (the LS flow). We also examine the ten-dimensional metric and dilaton configurations for the ``super-QCD'' flow (the GPPZ flow) in which all chiral superfields become massive. We show that the latter flow generically gives rise to a dielectric 7-brane in the infra-red, but the solution contains a singularity that may be interpreted…
We study a special class of higher derivative F-terms of the form $F_{g,n}W^{2g}(Πf)^{n}$ where W is the N=2 gravitational superfield and $Π$ is the chiral projector applied to a non-holomorphic function $f$ of the heterotic dilaton vector superfield. We analyze these couplings in the heterotic theory on $K3\times T^2$ , where it is found they satisfy an anomaly equation as the well studied $F_{g,0}$ terms. We recognize that, near a point of SU(2) enhancement, a given generating function of the leading singularity of the $F_{g,n}$ reproduces the free energy of a c=1 string at an arbitrary radi…
We calculate gaugino masses in string-derived models with hidden-sector gaugino condensation. The linear multiplet formulation for the dilaton superfield is used to implement perturbative modular invariance. The contribution arising from quantum effects in the observable sector includes the term recently found in generic supergravity models. A much larger contribution is present if matter fields with Standard Model gauge couplings also couple to the Green-Schwarz counter term. We comment on the relation of our Kähler U(1) superspace formalism to other calculations.
We propose a novel model of the modified (Starobinsky-like) old-minimal-type supergravity coupled to a chiral matter superfield, that can {\it simultaneously} describe multi-field inflation, primordial black hole (PBH) formation, dark matter (DM), and spontaneous supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking after inflation in a Minkowski vacuum. The PBH masses in our supergravity model of double slow-roll inflation, with a short phase of "ultra-slow-roll" between two slow-roll phases, are close to $10^{18}$ g. We find that a significant PBH fraction in the allowed mass window can be supplemented by spontaneo…
This article is based on my PhD thesis and covers the following topics: Holographic meson spectra in a dilaton flow background, the mixed Coulomb-Higgs branch in terms of instantons on D7 branes, and a dual description of heavy-light mesons. Moreover, in a second part the conformal anomaly of four dimensional supersymmetric quantum field theories coupled to classical N=1 supergravity is explored in a superfield formulation. The complete basis for the anomaly and consistency conditions, which arise from cohomological considerations, are given. Possible implications for an extension of Zamolodch…
At the component-level we study the `beta-function-favored constraint' (bffc) formalism, suggested in 1988 as the most natural formulation for supergravity derived from more fundamental theories. We begin with the suggestion that \bffc supergravity be identified with new minimal supergravity together with an additional chiral compensator multiplet. After $U_{\rm A}(1)$symmetry breaking, the non-propagating axion 2-form of new minimal supergravity becomes the propagating axion 2-form required by string theory. The final form of the theory is seen to uniquely allow four simultaneous features: (i…
