We prove (in superspace) the equivalence between the higher-derivative N=1 supergravity, defined by a holomorphic function F of the chiral scalar curvature superfield, and the standard theory of a chiral scalar superfield with a chiral superpotential W, coupled to the (minimal) Poincare supergravity in four spacetime dimensions. The relation between the holomorphic functions F and W is found. It can be used as the technical framework for the possible scenario unifying the early Universe inflation and the present Universe acceleration. We speculate on the possible origin of our model as the effective supergravity generated by quantum superstrings, with a dilaton-axion field as the leading field component of the chiral superfield.
In this contribution we revisit higher curvature N=1 supergravity and discuss the quintessence phase that can appear due to the $R^4$ terms. In particular we focus on the bosonic supersymmetric completion within the old-minimal and the new-minimal formulations.
The evolution of the quintessence field during a phase of chaotic inflation is studied. The inflaton and the quintesssence field are described in a supergravity framework where the coupling between the inflaton and quintessence is induced by non-renormalisable operators suppressed by the Planck mass. We show that the resulting quintessence potential during inflation possesses a time--dependent minimum playing the role of an attractor. The presence of this attractor forces the quintessence field to be small during inflation. These initial conditions are such that the quintessence field is on tr…
We address the possibility of false vacuum decay in $N=1$ supergravity theories, including those corresponding to superstring vacua. By establishing a Bogomol'nyi bound for the energy density stored in the domain wall of the $O(4)$ invariant bubble, we show that supersymmetric vacua remain absolutely stable against false vacuum decay into another supersymmetric vacuum, including those from a Minkowski to an anti-deSitter (AdS) one. As a consequence, there are no compact static spherical domain walls, while on the other hand there exist planar domain walls interpolating between non-degenerate s…
We compute one-loop threshold corrections to R^4 terms in N= 5,6 supergravity vacua of Type II superstrings. We then discuss non-perturbative corrections generated by asymmetric D-brane instantons. Finally we derive generating functions for MHV amplitudes at tree level in N = 5, 6 supergravities.
We obtain a bosonization prescription that allows to represent the energy-momentum tensor and supersymmetry generators of non-critical superstring theories with minimal matter as those of topological supergravity. Superstrings with $N=1$ and $N=2$ world-sheet supersymmetry are considered. The topological symmetry associated with the topological supergravity representation is studied. It is shown, in particular, that the compatibility of this topological structure with the supersymmetry enhances the superconformal symmetry of the models concerned.
We extend the recently established Mellin correspondence of supergravity and superstring amplitudes to the case of arbitrary helicity configurations. The amplitudes are discussed in the framework of Grassmannian varieties. We generalize Hodges' determinant to a function of two sets of independent coordinates and show that tree-level supergravity amplitudes can be obtained by contour integrations of both sets in separate Grassmannians while in superstring theory, one set of coordinates is identified with string vertex positions at the disk boundary and Mellin transformed into generalized hyperg…
It was recently pointed out that the cosmological constant (even metastable one) belongs to the so-called "swampland" and hence cannot be obtained as the low-energy limit of string theory that requires $|\nabla V| > c V$. If true, the dark energy needs to be described by an evolving scalar field, i.e., quintessence with $w>-1$ within supergravity. However, the large hierarchy between the supersymmetry breaking scale and the energy scale of dark energy imposes a challenge on building quintessence models in supergravity as the quintessence field typically acquires a mass of order the gravitino m…
A review is given of the implications of supersymmetric black holes for the non-perturbative formulation of toroidally compactified superstrings, with particular emphasis on symmetry enhancement at special vacua and S-duality of the heterotic string.
The dual version of the D=10 N=1 supergravity (SUGRA) is considered in the superspace approach. The superstring (anomaly compensating) corrections are described by the 3-form superfield $A_{abc}$ . The complete set of dynamical equations for the $A$-field and for physical fields of the theory are presented. The solution of the $A$-field equations as a finite order polynomial in terms of curvature and graviphoton superfields is given. It makes possible to incorporate some of the superstring corrections in the dual supergravity in the explicit, supersymmetric and closed form.
We elaborate a full superfield description of the interacting system of dynamical D=4, N=1 supergravity and dynamical superstring. As far as minimal formulation of the simple supergravity is used, such a system should contain as well the tensor (real linear) multiplet which describes the dilaton and the two-superform gauge field whose pull-back provides the Wess-Zumino term for the superstring. The superfield action is given by the sum of the Wess-Zumino action for D=4, N=1 superfield supergravity, the superfield action for the tensor multiplet in curved superspace and the Green-Schwarz supers…
We develop off-shell formulations for ${\cal N}=1$ and ${\cal N}=2$ anti-de Sitter supergravity theories in three spacetime dimensions that contain gauge two-forms in the auxiliary field sector. These formulations are shown to allow consistent couplings of supergravity to the Green-Schwarz superstring with ${\cal N}=1$ or ${\cal N}=2$ spacetime supersymmetry. In addition to being $κ$-symmetric, the Green-Schwarz superstring actions constructed are also invariant under super-Weyl transformations of the target space. We also present a detailed study of models for spontaneously broken local super…
The connection between Superstring theory and the low--energy world is analyzed. In particular, the soft Supersymmetry--breaking terms arising in Supergravity theories coming from Superstrings are computed. Several solutions proposed to solve the $μ$ problem, and the $B$ soft term associated, are discussed. The issue of gauge coupling constants unification in the context of Superstrings is also discussed.
This text is a review of aspects of supergravity theories that are relevant in superstring cosmology. In particular, it considers the possibilities and restrictions for `uplifting terms', i.e. methods to produce de Sitter vacua. We concentrate on N=1 and N=2 supergravities, and the tools of superconformal methods, which clarify the structure of these theories. Cosmic strings and embeddings of target manifolds of supergravity theories in others are discussed in short at the end.
We consider the conditions necessary for obtaining perturbative maximal supergravity in d dimensions as a decoupling limit of type II superstring theory compactified on a (10 -- d)-torus. For dimensions d = 2 and d = 3 it is possible to define a limit in which the only finite-mass states are the 256 massless states of maximal supergravity. However, in dimensions d > 3 there are infinite towers of additional massless and finite-mass states. These correspond to Kaluza--Klein charges, wound strings, Kaluza--Klein monopoles or branes wrapping around cycles of the toroidal extra dimensions. We conc…
It has recently been shown that the ten-dimensional superstring can be quantized using the BRST operator $Q=\ointλ^αd_α$ where $λ^α$ is a pure spinor satisfying $λγ^m λ=0$ and $d_α$ is the fermionic supersymmetric derivative. In this paper, the pure spinor version of superstring theory is formulated in a curved supergravity background and it is shown that nilpotency and holomorphicity of the pure spinor BRST operator imply the on-shell superspace constraints of the supergravity background. This is shown to lowest order in $α'$ for the heterotic and Type II superstrings, thus providing a compac…
We derive from a general formulation of pure spinor string theory on type IIA backgrounds the specific form of the action for the AdS_4 x P^3 background. We provide a complete geometrical characterization of the structure of the superfields involved in the action.
At the tree level, the maximally helicity violating amplitudes of N gauge bosons in open superstring theory and of N gravitons in supergravity are known to have simple representations in terms of tree graphs. For superstrings, the graphs encode integral representations of certain generalized Gaussian hypergeometric functions of kinematic invariants while for supergravity, they represent specific kinematic expressions constructed from spinor-helicity variables. We establish a superstring/supergravity correspondence for this class of amplitudes, by constructing a mapping between the positions of…
The equations of motion (e.m.'s) of the N=1, D=10 anomaly free supergravity, obtained in the framework of the superspace approach, are analyzed. The formal equivalence of the usual and dual supergravities is discussed at the level of e.m.'s. The great simplicity of the dual formulation is established. The possibillity of the lagrangian formulation of the dual supergravity is pointed out. The bosonic part of the lagrangian is constructed including anomaly compensating superstring corrections.
We review our recent work on the existence of a new independent R^4 term, at one loop, in the type IIA and heterotic effective actions, after reduction to four dimensions, besides the usual square of the Bel-Robinson tensor. We discuss its supersymmetrization.
We investigate the possibility of false vacuum decay in $N=1$ supergravity theories. By establishing a Bogomol'nyi bound for the energy density stored in the domain wall of the $O(4)$ invariant bubble, we show that supersymmetric vacua remain absolutely stable against false vacuum decay into another supersymmetric vacuum. This conforms with and completes the previous perturbative analysis of Weinberg. Implications for dynamical supersymmetry breaking and decompactification instabilities in superstring theory are discussed. In addition, we show that there are no compact static spherical domain …
We derive the equations of motion of type II 4D supergravity in superspace. This is achieved by coupling the Type II Berkovits' hybrid superstring to an N=2 curved background and requiring that the sigma-model has N=(2,2) superconformal invariance at one loop. We show that there are no anomalies in the fermionic OPE's and the complete set of compensator's equations is derived from the energy-momentum tensor. The equations of motion describe a hypertensorial and vectorial multiplet coupled to a U(1)\times U(1) N=2 Poincarè Supergravity.
We present a consistent theory of N=1 supergravity in twelve-dimensions with the signature (10,2). Even though the formulation uses two null vectors violating the manifest Lorentz covariance, all the superspace Bianchi identities are satisfied. After a simple dimensional reduction to ten-dimensions, this theory reproduces the N=1 supergravity in ten-dimensions, supporting the consistency of the system. We also show that our supergravity can be the consistent backgrounds for heterotic or type-I superstring in Green-Schwarz formulation, by confirming the kappa-invariance of the total action. Thi…
We present the Green-Schwarz $\s\-$model coupled to the $N=1$ {\it {supersymmetric}} Yang-Mills and supergravity in a four-dimensional space-time with the indefinite signature $(+,+,-,-)$. We first confirm the $\k\-$invariance of the Green-Schwarz action, and show that all the $\b\-$functions for the backgrounds vanish consistently after the use of their superfield equations. Subsequently, we inspect the supersymmetric {\it self-duality} conditions, that have been developed in our previous paper on the Yang-Mills and supergravity backgrounds. Remarkably, the Majorana-Weyl spinor dictating the …
The four six-dimensional ``little string'' theories are all described in the infinite momentum frame (IMF) as matrix theories by non-trivial 1+1 dimensional infra-red fixed points. We characterize these fixed points using supergravity. Starting from the matrix theory definition of M5-branes, we derive an associated dual supergravity description of the fixed point theories, arising as the near horizon geometry of certain brane configurations. These supergravity solutions are all smooth, and involve three dimensional Anti-de Sitter space AdS_3. They therefore provide a complete description of th…
We study the low-lying excitations of Type IIA superstring theory in a plane wave background with 24 supersymmetries. In the light-cone gauge, the superstring action has ${\cal N}=(4,4)$ supersymmetry and is exactly solvable, since it is quadratic in superstring coordinates. We obtain explicitly the spectrum of the Type IIA supergravity fluctuation modes in the plane wave background and give its correspondence with the spectrum of string states from the zero-mode sector of the light-cone superstring Hamiltonian.
In the context of quintessence, the concept of tracking solutions allows to address the fine-tuning and coincidence problems. When the field is on tracks today, one has $Q\approx m_{\rm Pl}$ demonstrating that, generically, any realistic model of quintessence must be based on supergravity. We construct the most simple model for which the scalar potential is positive. The scalar potential deduced from the supergravity model has the form $V(Q)=\frac{Λ^{4+α}}{Q^α}e^{\fracκ{2}Q^2}$. We show that despite the appearence of positive powers of the field, the coincidence problem is still solved. If $α\…
Inspired by the stringy quintessence F-term problem we highlight a generic contribution to the effective moduli masses that arises due to kinetic mixings between the moduli and the quintessence sector. We then proceed to discuss few supergravity toy models that accommodate such effect, and point out possible shortcomings. Interestingly, in the standard 2-derivative supergravity action there is no term to mediate the supersymmetry breaking from the kinetic quintessence sector to the gaugini and generate Majorana masses. Therefore we also propose a 2-derivative supersymmetric invariant that play…
The status of exponential scalar potentials in supergravity is reviewed, and updated. One version of N=8 D=4 supergravity with a positive exponential potential, obtainable from a `non-compactification' of M-theory, is shown to have an accelerating cosmological solution that realizes `eternal quintessence'. Some implications for a de Sitter version of the domain wall/QFT correspondence are discussed.
We present the complete supersymmetric and $κ$--symmetric action for the 4-dimensional interacting system of open supermembrane, dynamical supergravity and 3--form matter multiplets. The cases of a single 3-form matter multiplet and a quite generic model with a number of nonlinear interacting double 3-form multiplets are considered. In all cases the fermionic parameter of the $κ$-symmetry is subject to two apparently different projection conditions which suggests that the ground state of the system, in particular a domain junction, might preserve at most 1/4 of the spacetime supersymmetry. The…
A covariant closed superstring field theory, equivalent to classical ten-dimensional Type II supergravity, is presented. The defining conformal field theory is the ambitwistor string worldsheet theory of Mason and Skinner. This theory is known to reproduce the scattering amplitudes of Cachazo, He and Yuan in which the scattering equations play an important role and the string field theory naturally incorporates these results. We investigate the operator formalism description of the ambitwsitor string and propose an action for the string field theory of the bosonic and supersymmetric theories. …
We construct supergravity backgrounds for the integrable eta-deformations of the AdS2 x S2 x T6 and AdS5 x S5 superstring sigma models. The eta-deformation is governed by an R-matrix that solves the non-split modified classical Yang-Baxter equation on the superisometry algebra of the model. Such R-matrices include those of Drinfel'd-Jimbo type, which are constructed from a Dynkin diagram and the associated Cartan-Weyl basis. Drinfel'd-Jimbo R-matrices associated with inequivalent bases will typically lead to different deformed backgrounds. For the two models under consideration we find that th…
We derive the Free Differential Algebra for type IIA supergravity in 10 dimensions in the string frame. We provide all fermionic terms for all curvatures. We derive the Green-Schwarz sigma model for type IIA superstring based on the FDA construction and we check its invariance under kappa-symmetry. Finally, we derive the pure spinor sigma model and we check the BRST invariance. The present derivation has the advantage that the resulting sigma model is constructed in terms of the superfields appearing in the FDA and therefore one can directly relate a supergravity background with the correspond…
In a previous article we have shown the existence of a new independent R^4 term, at one loop, in the type IIA and heterotic effective actions, after reduction to four dimensions, besides the usual square of the Bel-Robinson tensor. It had been shown that such a term could not be directly supersymmetrized, but we showed that was possible after coupling to a scalar chiral multiplet. In this article we study the extended (N=8) supersymmetrization of this term, where no other coupling can be taken. We show that such supersymmetrization cannot be achieved at the linearized level. This is in conflic…
The hybrid formalism is used to quantize the superstring compactified to two-dimensional target-space in a manifestly spacetime supersymmetric manner. A quantizable sigma model action is then constructed for the Type II superstring in curved two-dimensional supergravity backgrounds which can include Ramond-Ramond flux. Such curved backgrounds include Calabi-Yau four-fold compactifications with Ramond-Ramond flux, and new extremal black hole solutions in two-dimensional dilaton supergravity theory. These black hole solutions are a natural generalization of the CGHS model and might be possible t…
The supersymmetric action of type IIA D=10 superstring in N=2a, D=10 supergravity background can be derived by double dimensional reduction of the action of supermembrane coupled to D=11 supergravity. We demonstrate that the background Ramond-Ramond fields appear in the resulting superstring action with an extra factor of exponential of the dilaton.
We review the origin of soft supersymmetry-breaking terms in N=1 supergravity models of particle physics. We first consider general formulae for those terms in general models with a hidden sector breaking supersymmetry at an intermediate energy scale. The results for some simple models are given. We then consider the results obtained in some simple superstring models in which particular assumptions about the origin of supersymmetry breaking are made. These are models in which the seed of supersymmetry breaking is assumed to be originated in the dilaton/moduli sector of the theory.
We revisited the formalism of 11D polarized scattering equation by Geyer and Mason from the perspective of spinor frame approach and spinor moving frame formulation of the 11D ambitwistor superstring action. In particular, we rigorously obtain the equation for the spinor function on Riemann sphere from the supertwistor form of the ambitwistor superstring action, write its general solution and use it to derive the polarized scattering equation. We show that the expression used by Geyer and Mason to motivate their ansatz for the solution of polarized scattering equation can be obtained from our …
Montonen and Olive's conjecture in 1977 that some theories possess a duality symmetry that interchanges the electrically charged particle with that of negatively charged t' Hooft-Polyakov monopoles which relates strong coupling to weak coupling. This will be nearly the same as Shapere et al, who showed that the equation of motion of the coupled Einstein-Maxwell-axion dilaton system, occurs in low energy in String theory, is invariant under electromagnetic duality transformation; that also interchanges the strong and weak coupling limit of the theory. These ideas have been persued in the $SO(6)…
We describe the constraints imposed on quantum maximal supergravity theories in perturbation theory by the two duality frameworks: S-duality in superstring theory and the AdS/CFT holographic correspondence between IIB superstring theory and N=4 super Yang-Mills theory.
Mason and Skinner recently constructed a chiral infinite tension limit of the Ramond-Neveu-Schwarz superstring which was shown to compute the Cachazo-He-Yuan formulae for tree-level d=10 Yang-Mills amplitudes and the NS-NS sector of tree-level d=10 supergravity amplitudes. In this letter, their chiral infinite tension limit is generalized to the pure spinor superstring which computes a d=10 superspace version of the Cachazo-He-Yuan formulae for tree-level d=10 super-Yang-Mills and supergravity amplitudes.
We discuss the connection between Weyl$^2$ supergravity and superstrings and further discuss holography between 4-dimensional, ${\cal N}=4$ superconformal Weyl$^2$ supergravity and ${\cal N}=8$, higher spin-four theory on $AdS_5$. The Weyl$^2$ plus Einstein supergravity theory is a special kind of a bimetric gravity theory and consists of a massless graviton multiplet plus an additional massive spin-two supermultiplet. Here, we argue that the additional spin-two field and its superpartners originate from massive excitations in the open string sector; just like the ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills…
We derive the T-duality transformations that transform a general d=10 solution of the type-IIA string with one isometry to a solution of the type-IIB string with one isometry and vice versa. In contrast to other superstring theories, the T-duality transformations are not related to a non-compact symmetry of a d=9 supergravity theory. We also discuss S-duality in d=9 and d=10 and the relationship with eleven-dimensional supergravity theory. We apply these dualities to generate new solutions of the type IIA and type IIB superstrings and of eleven-dimensional supergravity.
We present the {\it canonical} set of superspace constraints for self-dual supergravity, a ``self-dual'' tensor multiplet and a self-dual Yang-Mills multiplet with $~N=1~$ supersymmetry in the space-time with signature $(+,+,-,-)$. For this set of constraints, the consistency of the self-duality conditions on these multiplets with supersymmetry is manifest. The energy-momentum tensors of all the self-dual ``matter'' multiplets vanish, to be consistent with the self-duality of the Riemann tensor. In particular, the special significance of the ``self-dual'' tensor multiplet is noted. This result…
We find an exact type IIB supergravity solution that represents a one-parameter deformation of the T-dual of the AdS_5 x S^5 background (with T-duality applied in all 6 abelian bosonic isometric directions). The non-trivial fields are the metric, dilaton and RR 5-form only. The latter has remarkably simple "undeformed" form when written in terms of a "deformation-rotated" vielbein basis. An unusual feature of this solution is that the dilaton contains a linear dependence on the isometric coordinates of the metric precluding a straightforward reversal of T-duality. If we still formally dualize …
We determine the constraints imposed on the 10d target superspace geometry by the requirement of classical kappa-symmetry of the Green-Schwarz superstring. In the type I case we find that the background must satisfy a generalization of type I supergravity equations. These equations depend on an arbitrary vector X_a and imply the one-loop scale invariance of the GS sigma model. In the special case when X_a is the gradient of a scalar ϕ(dilaton) one recovers the standard type I equations equivalent to the 2d Weyl invariance conditions of the superstring sigma model. In the type II case we find a…
AdS/CFT predicts that the value of the on-shell action for type IIB Supergravity (SUGRA) on $AdS_5 \times S^5$ background must be a non-zero number completely determined from the boundary theory. We examine this statement within Sen's formalism for type IIB SUGRA and find that consistency with AdS/CFT requires us to add a specific boundary term to the action. We contrast our resolution with two other resolutions recently proposed in the literature in the context of different approaches to type IIB SUGRA. We explain how our resolution presents a strong benchmark for the possible boundary term o…
The positive potential energy required for inflation spontaneously breaks supersymmetry and in general gives any would-be inflaton an effective mass of order the inflationary Hubble parameter thus ruling it out as an inflaton. In this paper I give simple conditions on the superpotential that eliminate some potential sources for this mass, and derive a form for the Kahler potential that eliminates the rest. This reduces the problem of constructing a model of inflation in supergravity to that of constructing one in global supersymmetry with the extra conditions $W=W_φ=ψ=0$ during inflation (wher…
It is known that, in string sigma-model metric, the `extreme' fivebrane solution of D=10 supergravity interpolates between D=10 Minkowski spacetime and a supersymmetric $S^3$ compactification to a linear dilaton vacuum. We show here that, in {\it fivebrane} sigma-model metric, the extreme string solution of D=10 supergravity interpolates between Minkowski spacetime and a hitherto unknown supersymmetric $S^7$ compactification of d=10 supergravity to a three-dimensional anti-de Sitter generalization of the linear dilaton vacuum, which may be invariantly characterized in terms of conformal Killin…
A discussion of the number of degrees of freedom, and their dynamical properties, in higher derivative gravitational theories is presented. The complete non-linear sigma model for these degrees of freedom is exhibited using the method of auxiliary fields. As a by-product we present a consistent non-linear coupling of a spin-2 tensor to gravitation. It is shown that non-vanishing $(C_{μναβ})^{2}$ terms arise in $N=1$, $D=4$ superstring Lagrangians due to one-loop radiative corrections with light field internal lines. We discuss the general form of quadratic $(1,1)$ supergravity in two dimension…
Using the pure spinor formalism, a particular superstring scattering amplitude involving one closed string and $N$ open string vertex operators in $\mathrm{AdS}{}_5 \times \mathrm{S}^5$ is studied. It is shown that the tree-level amplitude containing one supergravity state and $N$ super-Yang-Mills states located on D3-branes near the AdS${}_5$ boundary can be expressed as a $d=4$ ${\cal N}=4$ harmonic superspace integral in terms of the supergravity and super-Yang-Mills superfields.
At the component-level we study the `beta-function-favored constraint' (bffc) formalism, suggested in 1988 as the most natural formulation for supergravity derived from more fundamental theories. We begin with the suggestion that \bffc supergravity be identified with new minimal supergravity together with an additional chiral compensator multiplet. After $U_{\rm A}(1)$symmetry breaking, the non-propagating axion 2-form of new minimal supergravity becomes the propagating axion 2-form required by string theory. The final form of the theory is seen to uniquely allow four simultaneous features: (i…
We study the origins of the five ten-dimensional ``matrix superstring'' theories, supplementing old results with new ones, and find that they all fit into a unified framework. In all cases the matrix definition of the string in the limit of vanishingly small coupling is a trivial 1+1 dimensional infra-red fixed point (an orbifold conformal field theory) characterized uniquely by matrix versions of the appropriate Green-Schwarz action. The Fock space of the matrix string is built out of winding T-dual strings. There is an associated dual supergravity description in terms of the near horizon geo…
The ${\cal R}^2$ scale invariant gravity theory coupled to conformally invariant matter is investigated. We show that in the non-supersymmetric case the conformally coupled scalars belong to an $SO(1, 1+n)/SO(1+n)$ manifold, while in the supersymmetric case the scalar manifold becomes isomorphic to the Kählerian space ${\cal M}_n$=$SU(1, 1+n)/ U(1)\times SU(1+n)$. In both cases when the underlying scale symmetry is preserved the vacuum corresponds to de Sitter space. Once the scale symmetry is broken by quantum effects, a transition to flat space becomes possible. We argue that the scale viola…
It is argued that the type IIA 10-dimensional superstring theory is actually a compactified 11-dimensional supermembrane theory in which the fundamental supermembrane is identified with the the solitonic membrane of 11-dimensional supergravity. The charged extreme black holes of the 10-dimensional type IIA string theory are interpreted as the Kaluza-Klein modes of 11-dimensional supergravity and the dual sixbranes as the analogue of Kaluza-Klein monopoles. All other p-brane solutions of the type IIA superstring theory are derived from the 11-dimensional membrane and its magnetic dual fivebrane…
An SL(2, Z) family of string solutions of type IIB supergravity in ten dimensions is constructed. The solutions are labeled by a pair of relatively prime integers, which characterize charges of the three-form field strengths. The string tensions depend on these charges in an SL(2, Z) covariant way. Compactifying on a circle and identifying with eleven-dimensional supergravity compactified on a torus implies that the modulus of the IIB theory should be equated to the modular parameter of the torus.
