It is possible to reduce the discrepancy between the local measurement of the cosmological parameter $H_0$ and the value derived from the $Planck$ measurements of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) by considering contamination of the CMB by emission from some medium around distant extragalactic sources, such as extremely cold coarse-grain dust. Though being distant, such a medium would still be in the foreground with respect to the CMB, and, as any other foreground, it would alter the CMB power spectrum. This could contribute to the dispersion of CMB temperature fluctuations. By generating a few random samples of CMB with different dispersions, we have checked that the increased dispersion leads to a smaller estimated value of $H_0$, the rest of the cosmological model parameters remaining fixed. This might explain the reduced value of the $Planck$-derived parameter $H_0$ with respect to the local measurements. The signature of the distant foreground in the CMB traced by SNe was previously reported by the authors of this paper -- we found a correlation between the SN redshifts, $z_{\rm SN}$, and CMB temperature fluctuations at the SNe locations, $T_{\rm SN}$. Here we have used the slopes of the regression lines $T_{\rm SN}\,/\,z_{\rm SN}$ corresponding to different {\it Planck} wave bands in order to estimate the possible temperature of the distant extragalactic medium, which turns out to be very low, about 5\,K. The most likely ingredient of this medium is coarse-grain ($grey$) dust, which is known to be almost undetectable, except for the effect of dimming remote extragalactic sources.
It is possible to explain the discrepancy (tension) between the local measurement of the cosmological parameter $H_0$ (the Hubble constant) and its value derived from the Planck-mission measurements of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) by considering contamination of the CMB by emission from some medium surrounding distant extragalactic sources (a distant foreground), such as extremely cold coarse-grain (grey) dust. As any other foreground, it would alter the CMB power spectrum and contribute to the dispersion of CMB temperature fluctuations. By generating random samples of CMB with differ…
We report the discovery of a redshift 1.71 supernova in the GOODS North field. The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) ACS spectrum has almost negligible contamination from the host or neighboring galaxies. Although the rest frame sampled range is too blue to include any Si ii line, a principal component analysis allows us to confirm it as a Type Ia supernova with 92% confidence. A recent serendipitous archival HST WFC3 grism spectrum contributed a key element of the confirmation by giving a host-galaxy redshift of 1.713 +/- 0.007. In addition to being the most distant SN Ia with spectroscopic confir…
By using the Planck map of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation we have checked and confirmed the existence of a correlation between supernova (SN) redshifts, $z_{\rm SN}$, and CMB temperature fluctuations at the SNe locations, $T_{\rm SN}$, which we previously reported for the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe data. The Pearson correlation coefficient for the Planck data is $r=+0.38\pm 0.08$ which indicates that the correlation is statistically significant (the signal is about $5σ$ above the noise level). The correlation becomes even stronger for the type Ia subsample of SNe, $r…
The main objective of my thesis was to provide us, for the first time, with a reliable view of the distant Hubble sequence, and its evolution over the past 6 Gyr. To achieve this goal, we have created a new morphological classification method which (1) includes all the available observational data, (2) can be easily reproduced, and (3) presents a negligible subjectivity. This method allows us to study homogeneously the morphology of local and distant galaxies. The first step has been to study the evolution of galaxies using the IMAGES survey. This survey allowed us to establish the kinematic s…
The cosmic microwave background (CMB) monopole temperature evolves with the inverse of the cosmological scale factor, independent of many cosmological assumptions. With sufficient sensitivity, real-time cosmological observations could thus be used to measure the local expansion rate of the Universe using the cooling of the CMB. We forecast how well a CMB spectrometer could determine the Hubble constant via this method. The primary challenge of such a mission lies in the separation of Galactic and extra-Galactic foreground signals from the CMB at extremely high precision. However, overcoming th…
We present HST/WFC3 narrow-band imaging of the starburst galaxy M83 targeting the hydrogen recombination lines (H$β$, H$α$ and Pa$β$), which we use to investigate the dust extinction in the HII regions. We derive extinction maps with 6 parsec spatial resolution from two combinations of hydrogen lines (H$α$/H$β$ and H$α$/Pa$β$), and show that the longer wavelengths probe larger optical depths, with $A_V$ values larger by $\gtrsim$1 mag than those derived from the shorter wavelengths. This difference leads to a factor $\gtrsim$2 discrepancy in the extinction-corrected H$α$ luminosity, a signific…
Acting as powerful gravitational lenses, the strong lensing galaxy clusters of the deep Hubble Frontier Fields (HFF) program permit access to lower-luminosity galaxies lying at higher redshifts than hitherto possible. We analyzed the HFF to measure the volume density of Lyman-break galaxies at $z > 4.75$ by identifying a complete and reliable sample up to $z \simeq 10$. A marked deficit of such galaxies was uncovered in the highly magnified regions of the clusters relative to their outskirts, implying that the magnification of the sky area dominates over additional faint galaxies magnified abo…
We study the expected variance of measurements of the Hubble constant, $H_0$, as calculated in either linear perturbation theory or using non-linear velocity power spectra derived from $N$-body simulations. We compare the variance with that obtained by carrying out mock observations in the N-body simulations, and show that the estimator typically used for the local Hubble constant in studies based on perturbation theory is different from the one used in studies based on N-body simulations. The latter gives larger weight to distant sources, which explains why studies based on N-body simulations…
The investigation of distant galaxy formation and evolution is a powerful tool to constrain dark matter scenarios, supporting and in some cases surpassing other astrophysical and experimental probes. The recent completion of the Hubble Frontier Fields (HFF) programme combining ultra-deep Hubble Space Telescope observations and the magnification power of gravitational lensing produced by foreground galaxy clusters has enabled the detection of the faintest primordial galaxies ever studied. Here we show how the number density of such primordial galaxies allows to constrain a variety of DM models …
We present a full set of numerical tools to extract Galaxy Cluster pressure profiles from the joint analysis of Planck and South Pole Telescope (SPT) observations. Pressure profiles are powerful tracers of the thermodynamic properties and the internal structure of the clusters. Tracing the pressure over the cosmic times allows to constraints the evolution of the cluster structure and the contribution of astrophysical phenomena. SPT and Planck are complementary to constrain the cluster structure at various spatial scales. The SPT cluster catalogue counts 677 cluster candidates up to redshift 1.…
We derived solutions for the Smoluchowski kinetic equation for the mass function of galaxies, which describes mergers in differential approximation, where mergers with low-mass galaxies are the dominant factor. The evolution of the initial distribution is analyzed as well as the influence of the source represented by galaxies (halos) that separate from the global cosmological expansion. It is shown that the evolution of the slope of the power-law part of the luminosity function at a constant mass-to-luminosity ratio observed in the Ultra Deep Hubble Field can be described as a result of explos…
We estimate the Rees--Sciama (RS) effect of super structures on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature fluctuations and identify a related effect on galaxy redshifts. By numerically solving the geodesic equation, we find that both superclusters and supervoids can decrease the temperature of the CMB by several micro Kelvin in the central region and increase the temperature slightly in the surrounding area due to the RS effect. The two components of the RS effect, redshift and gravitational time delay, largely cancel each other, leaving an equivalent but much smaller effect on the CMB…
We show that the measured abundance of ultra-faint lensed galaxies at $z\approx 6$ in the Hubble Frontier Fields (HFF) provides stringent constraints on the parameter space of i) Dark Matter models based on keV sterile neutrinos; ii) the "fuzzy" wavelike Dark Matter models, based on Bose-Einstein condensate of ultra-light particles. For the case of the sterile neutrinos, we consider two production mechanisms: resonant production through the mixing with active neutrinos and the decay of scalar particles. For the former model, we derive constraints for the combination of sterile neutrino mass $m…
We provide perturbation theory predictions for the HI intensity mapping power spectrum multipoles using the Effective Field Theory of Large Scale Structure (EFTofLSS), which should allow us to constrain cosmological parameters exploiting mildly nonlinear scales. Assuming survey specifications typical of proposed interferometric HI intensity mapping experiments like CHORD and PUMA, and realistic ranges of validity for the perturbation theory modelling, we run mock full shape MCMC analyses at a redshift bin centred at $z=0.5$, and compare with Stage-IV optical galaxy surveys. We include the impa…
In a historical perspective, compact solutions of Einstein's equations, including the cosmological constant and the curvature terms, are obtained, starting from two recent observational estimates of the Hubble's parameter (H0) and the "age" of the universe (t0). Cosmological implications for ΛCDM (Λ Cold Dark Matter), KOFL (k Open Friedman-Lemaitre), plus two mixed solutions are investigated, under the constraints imposed by the relatively narrow current uncertainties. Quantitative results obtained for the KOFL case seem to be compatible with matter density and the highest observed red-shifts …
The three rung distance ladder, which calibrates Type Ia supernovae through stellar distances linked to geometric measurements, provides the highest precision direct measurement of the Hubble constant. In light of the Hubble tension, it is important to test the individual components of the distance ladder. For this purpose, we report a measurement of the Hubble constant from 35 extragalactic Cepheid hosts measured by the SH0ES team, using their distances and redshifts at cz < 3300 km /s , instead of any, more distant Type Ia supernovae, to measure the Hubble flow. The Cepheid distances are cal…
We use the Radial Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (RBAO) measurements, distant type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), the observational $H(z)$ data (OHD) and the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) shift parameter data to constrain cosmological parameters of $Λ$CDM and XCDM cosmologies and further examine the role of OHD and SNe Ia data in cosmological constraints. We marginalize the likelihood function over $h$ by integrating the probability density $P\propto e^{-χ^{2}/2}$ to obtain the best fitting results and the confidence regions in the $Ω_{m}-Ω_Λ$ plane. With the combination analysis for both of the {\rm…

In the standard cosmological model, the dimming of distant Type Ia supernovae is explained by invoking the existence of repulsive `dark energy' which is causing the Hubble expansion to accelerate. However this may be an artifact of interpreting the data in an (oversimplified) homogeneous model universe. In the simplest inhomogeneous model which fits the SNe Ia Hubble diagram without dark energy, we are located close to the centre of a void modelled by a Lemaítre-Tolman-Bondi metric. It has been claimed that such models cannot fit the CMB and other cosmological data. This is however based on th…
We discuss new constraints on the epoch of cosmic reionization and test the assumption that most of the ionizing photons responsible arose from high redshift star-forming galaxies. Good progress has been made in charting the end of reionization through spectroscopic studies of z~6-8 QSOs, gamma-ray bursts and galaxies expected to host Lyman-alpha emission. However, the most stringent constraints on its duration have come from the integrated optical depth, tau, of Thomson scattering to the cosmic microwave background. Using the latest data on the abundance and luminosity distribution of distant…

Assessing the significance and implications of the recently established Hubble tension requires the comprehensive identification, quantification, and mitigation of uncertainties and/or biases affecting $H_0$ measurements. Here, we investigate the previously overlooked distance scale bias resulting from the interplay between redshift and Leavitt laws in an expanding Universe: Redshift-Leavitt bias (RLB). Redshift dilates oscillation periods of pulsating stars residing in supernova-host galaxies relative to periods of identical stars residing in nearby (anchor) galaxies. Multiplying dilated $\lo…
Assuming that supernovae type Ia (SNe Ia) are standard candles one could use them to test cosmological theories. The Hubble Space Telescope team analyzed 186 SNe Ia\cite{Riess_04} to test the Standard Cosmological model (SC) associated with expanded lengths in the Universe and evaluate its parameters. We use the same sample to determine parameters of Conformal Cosmological model (CC) with relative reference units of intervals, so that conformal quantities of General Relativity are interpreted as observables. We concluded, that really the test is extremely useful and allows to evaluate paramete…
