MoTe$_2$ has recently attracted much attention due to the observation of pressure-induced superconductivity, exotic topological phase transitions, and nonlinear quantum effects. However, there has been debate on the intriguing structural phase transitions among various observed phases of MoTe$_2$, and their connection to the underlying topological electronic properties. In this work, by means of density-functional theory (DFT+U) calculations, we investigate the structural phase transition between the polar T$_d$ and nonpolar 1T$'$ phases of MoTe$_2$ in reference to a hypothetical high-symmetry T$_0$ phase that exhibits higher-order topological features. In the T$_d$ phase we obtain a total of 12 Weyl points, which can be created/annihilated, dynamically manipulated, and switched by tuning a polar phonon mode. We also report the existence of a tunable nonlinear Hall effect in T$_d$-MoTe$_2$, and propose the use of this effect as a probe for the detection of polarity orientation in polar (semi)metals. By studying the role of dimensionality, we identify a configuration in which a nonlinear surface response current emerges. The potential technological applications of the tunable Weyl phase and the nonlinear Hall effect are discussed.
We investigate the orthorhombic phase (Td) of layered transition-metal-dichalcogenide MoTe$_2$ as a Weyl semimetal candidate, which was discovered to be a superconductor in our recent experiment. MoTe$_2$ exhibits four pairs of Weyl points lying slightly ($\sim$ 6 meV) above the Fermi energy in the bulk band structure. Unlike its cousin WTe$_2$, which was predicted to be a type-II Weyl semimetal recently, the spacing between each pair of Weyl points is found to be as large as 4 percent of the reciprocal lattice in MoTe$_2$ (six times larger than that of WTe$_2$). When projected to the surface,…
In many realistic topological materials, more than one kind of fermions contribute to the electronic bands crossing the Fermi level, leading to various novel phenomena. Here, using momentum-resolved inelastic electron scattering, we investigate the plasmons and their evolution across the phase transition in a type-II Weyl Semimetal MoTe$_2$, in which both Weyl fermions and trivial nonrelativistic fermions contribute to the Fermi surface in the Td phase. One plasmon mode in the 1T' phase at high temperature and two plasmon modes in the topological T$_d$ phase at low temperature are observed. Co…
Topological quantum materials, including topological insulators and superconductors, Dirac semimetals and Weyl semimetals, have attracted much attention recently for their unique electronic structure, spin texture and physical properties. Very lately, a new type of Weyl semimetals has been proposed where the Weyl Fermions emerge at the boundary between electron and hole pockets in a new phase of matter, which is distinct from the standard type I Weyl semimetals with a point-like Fermi surface. The Weyl cone in this type II semimetals is strongly tilted and the related Fermi surface undergos a …
Based on the ab initio calculations, we show that MoTe2, in its low-temperature orthorhombic structure characterized by an X-ray diffraction study at 100 K, realizes 4 type-II Weyl points between the N-th and N+1-th bands, where N is the total number of valence electrons per unit cell. Other WPs and nodal lines between different other bands also appear close to the Fermi level due to a complex topological band structure. We predict a series of strain-driven topological phase transitions in this compound, opening a wide range of possible experimental realizations of different topological semime…
Topological Weyl semimetal (TWS), a new state of quantum matter, has sparked enormous research interest recently. Possessing unique Weyl fermions in the bulk and Fermi arcs on the surface, TWSs offer a rare platform for realizing many exotic physical phenomena. TWSs can be classified into type-I that respect Lorentz symmetry and type-II that do not. Here, we directly visualize the electronic structure of MoTe2, a recently proposed type-II TWS. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we unravel the unique surface Fermi arcs, in good agreement with our ab-initio calculations. Fr…
We report a combined experimental and theoretical study of the candidate type-II Weyl semimetal MoTe2. Using laser-based angle-resolved photoemission we resolve multiple distinct Fermi arcs on the inequivalent top and bottom (001) surfaces. All surface states observed experimentally are reproduced by an electronic structure calculation for the experimental crystal structure that predicts a topological Weyl semimetal state with 8 type-II Weyl points. We further use systematic electronic structure calculations simulating different Weyl point arrangements to discuss the robustness of the identifi…
Using soft x-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy we probed the bulk electronic structure of Td MoTe2. We found that on-site Coulomb interaction leads to a Lifshitz transition, which is essential for a precise description of the electronic structure. A hybrid Weyl semimetal state with a pair of energy bands touching at both type-I and type-II Weyl nodes is indicated by comparing the experimental data with theoretical calculations. Unveiling the importance of Coulomb interaction opens up a new route to comprehend the unique properties of MoTe2, and is significant for understanding the …
Weyl semimetals display a novel topological phase of matter where the Weyl nodes emerge in pairs of opposite chirality and can be seen as either a source or a sink of Berry curvature. The exotic effects in Weyl semimetals, such as surface Fermi arcs and the chiral anomaly, make them a new playground for exploring novel functionalities. Further exploiting their potential applications requires clear understanding of their topological electronic properties, such as Weyl points and Fermi arcs. Here we report a Fourier transform scanning tunneling spectroscopy (FT-STS) study on a type-II Weyl semim…
We report the first observation of the non-magnetic Barkhausen effect in van der Waals layered crystals, specifically, between the Td and 1T' phases in type-II Weyl semimetal MoTe2. Thinning down the MoTe2 crystal from bulk material to about 25nm results in a drastic strengthening of the hysteresis in the phase transition, with the difference in critical temperature increasing from 40K to more than 300K. The Barkhausen effect appears for thin samples and the temperature range of the Barkhausen zone grows approximately linearly with reducing sample thickness, pointing to a surface origin of the…
$\mathrm{MoTe_2}$ has recently been shown to realize in its low-temperature phase the type-II Weyl semimetal (WSM). We investigated by time- and angle- resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (tr-ARPES) the possible influence of the Weyl points in the electron dynamics above the Fermi level $\mathrm{E_F}$, by comparing the ultrafast response of $\mathrm{MoTe_2}$ in the trivial and topological phases. In the low-temperature WSM phase, we report an enhanced relaxation rate of electrons optically excited to the conduction band, which we interpret as a fingerprint of the local gap closure when Weyl po…
The carrier dynamics and electronic structures of type-II Weyl semimetal candidates MoTe$_2$ and WTe$_2$ have been investigated by using temperature-dependent optical conductivity [$σ(ω)$] spectra. Two kinds of Drude peaks (narrow and broad) have been separately observed. The width of the broad Drude peak increases with elevating temperature above the Debye temperature of about 130 K in the same way as those of normal metals, on the other hand, the narrow Drude peak becomes visible below 80 K and the width is rapidly suppressed with decreasing temperature. Because the temperature dependence of…
Transition metal dichalcogenide MoTe$_2$ is an important candidate for realizing the newly predicted type-IIWeyl fermions, for which the breaking of the inversion symmetry is a prerequisite. Here we present direct spectroscopic evidence for the inversion symmetry breaking in the low temperature phase of MoTe$_2$ by systematic Raman experiments and first principles calculations. We identify five lattice vibrational modes which are Raman active only in noncentrosymmetric structure at low temperature. A hysteresis is also observed in the peak intensity of inversion symmetry activated Raman modes,…
Electronic tunability in crystals with weakly-bound layers can be achieved through layer stacking order. One such example is MoTe$_2$, where the low-temperature orthorhombic T$_d$ phase is topological and host to Weyl quasiparticles. The transition mechanism to the non-trivial topology is elucidated by single crystal neutron diffraction. Upon cooling from the monoclinic 1T$\prime$ to the T$_d$ phase, diffuse scattering accompanies the transition, arising from random, in-plane layer displacements, and dissipates upon entering the T$_d$ phase. Diffuse scattering is observed only in the H0L plane…
A Weyl semimetal is a new type of topological quantum phase with intriguing physics near the Weyl nodes. Although the equilibrium state of Weyl semimetals has been investigated, the ultrafast dynamics near the Weyl node in the nonequilibrium state is still missing. Here by performing time and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy on type-II Weyl semimetal MoTe$_2$, we reveal the dispersion of the unoccupied states and identify the Weyl node at 70 meV above E$_F$. Moreover, by tracking the ultrafast relaxation dynamics near the Weyl node upon photo-excitation with energy, momentum and tempo…
Molybdenum ditelluride, MoTe2, is a versatile material where the topological phase can be readily tuned by manipulating the associated structural phase transition. The fine details of the band structure of MoTe2, key to understanding its topological properties, have proven difficult to disentangle experientially due to the multi-band character of the material. Through experimental optical conductivity spectra, we detect two strong low-energy interband transitions. Both are linked to excitations between spin-orbit split bands. The lowest interband transition shows a strong thermal shift, pointi…
Weyl semimetals for their exotic topological properties have drawn considerable attention in many research fields. When in combination with s-wave superconductors, the supercurrent can be carried by their topological surface channels, forming junctions mimic the behavior of Majorana bound states. Here, we present a transmon-like superconducting quantum intereference device (SQUID) consists of lateral junctions made of Weyl semimetal Td-MoTe2 and superconducting leads niobium nitride (NbN). The SQUID is coupled to a readout cavity made of molybdenum rhenium (MoRe), whose response at high power …
MoTe_2, with the orthorhombic T_d phase, is a new type (type-II) of Weyl semimetal, where the Weyl Fermions emerge at the boundary between electron and hole pockets. Non-saturating magnetoresistance (MR), and superconductivity were also observed in T_d-MoTe_2. Understanding the superconductivity in T_d-MoTe_2, which was proposed to be topologically non-trivial, is of eminent interest. Here, we report high-pressure (p_max = 1.3 GPa) muon spin rotation experiments on the temperature-dependent magnetic penetration depth in T_d-MoTe_2. A substantial increase of the superfluid density n_s/m^* and a…
The topological Weyl semimetal MoTe2, in the orthorhombic phase, is an important system both from the point of view of fundamental physics and potential applications. In this study we have investigated the elastic, electronic, bonding and optical properties of MoTe2 using density functional theory. Study of the elastic constants and moduli indicates that MoTe2 is a relatively soft material with high level of machinability. Mechanical stability conditions are fulfilled. The compound possesses elastic and mechanical anisotropy and is prone to brittle fracture. Elastic parameters indicate that bo…
We investigate the surface electronic structures of polar 1T'-MoTe2, the Weyl semimetal candidate realized through the nonpolar-polar structural phase transition, by utilizing the laser angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) combined with first-principles calculations. Two kinds of domains with different surface band dispersions are observed from a single-crystalline sample. The spin-resolved measurements further reveal that the spin polarizations of the surface and the bulk-derived states show the different domain-dependences, indicating the opposite bulk polarity. For both domains…
Much of the dramatic growth in research on topological materials has focused on topologically protected surface states. While the domain walls of topological materials such as Weyl semimetals with broken inversion or time-reversal symmetry can provide a hunting ground for exploring topological interfacial states, such investigations have received little attention to date. Here, utilizing in-situ cryogenic transmission electron microscopy combined with first-principles calculations, we discover intriguing domain-wall structures in MoTe2, both between polar variants of the low-temperature(T) Wey…
Type-II Weyl semimetal candidate MoTe$_2$, which superconducts at T_c~0.1 K, is one of the promising candidates for realizing topological superconductivity. However, the exceedingly low $T_c$ is associated with a small upper critical field ($H_{c2}$), implying a fragile superconducting phase that only exists on a small region of the $H$-$T$ phase diagram. Here, we describe a simple and versatile approach based on the differential thermal expansion between dissimilar materials to subject a thin single crystalline MoTe$_2$ to biaxial strain. With this approach, we successfully enhance the $T_c$ …
The layered 2D-material MoTe$_2$ in the T$_d$ crystal phase is a semimetal which has theoretically been predicted to possess topologically non-trivial bands corresponding to Weyl fermions. Clear experimental evidence by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is, however, lacking, which calls for a careful examination of the relation between ground state band structure calculations and ARPES intensity plots. Here we report a study of the near Fermi-energy band structure of MoTe$_2$(T$_d$) by means of ARPES measurements, density functional theory, and one-step-model ARPES calculations…
Besides the negative longitudinal magnetoresistance (MR), planar Hall effect (PHE) is a newly emerging experimental tool to test the chiral anomaly or nontrivial Berry curvature in Weyl semimetals (WSMs). However, the origins of PHE in various systems are not fully distinguished and understood. Here we perform a systematic study on the PHE and anisotropic MR (AMR) of Td-MoTe2, a type-II WSM. Although the PHE and AMR curves can be well fitted by the theoretical formulas, we demonstrate that the anisotropic resistivity arises from the orbital MR (OMR), instead of the negative MR as expected in t…
Moiré heterobilayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) emerge as an ideal system for simulating the single-band Hubbard model and interesting correlated phases have been observed in these systems. Nevertheless, the moiré bands in heterobilayer TMDs were believed to be topologically trivial. Recently, it was reported that both a quantum valley Hall insulating state at filling $ν=2$ (two holes per moiré unit cell) and a valley-polarized quantum anomalous Hall state at filling $ν=1$ were observed in AB stacked moiré MoTe$_2$/WSe$_2$ heterobilayers. However, how the topologically nontrivial s…
Highly anisotropic Drude-weight-reduction and enhanced linear-dichroism in van der Waals Weyl semimetal Td-MoTe2 with coherent interlayer electronic transport
本研究结合线偏振光谱与电输运测量,揭示 Td-MoTe2 在 II 型外尔半金属相中沿 a 轴的高度各向异性 Drude 权重降低,并发现约 0.68 的增强归一化线二色性。
We performed the angle dependent magnetoresistance (MR), Hall effect measurements, the temperature dependent magneto-thermoelectric power (TEP) S(T) measurements, and the first-principles calculations to study the electronic properties of orthorhombic phase MoTe2 (Td-MoTe2), which was proposed to be electronically two-dimensional (2D). There are some interesting findings about Td-MoTe2: (1) A scaling approach εθ=(sin2θ+γ-2cos2θ)1/2 is applied, where θ is the magnetic field angle with respect to the c axis of the crystal and γ is the mass anisotropy. Unexpectedly, the electronically 3D characte…
Using elastic neutron scattering on single crystals of MoTe$_{2}$ and Mo$_{1-x}$W$_{x}$Te$_{2}$ ($x \lesssim 0.01$), the temperature dependence of the recently discovered T$_{d}^{*}$ phase, present between the low temperature orthorhombic T$_{d}$ phase and high temperature monoclinic 1T$^{\prime}$ phase, is explored. The T$_{d}^{*}$ phase appears only on warming from T$_{d}$ and is observed in the hysteresis region prior to the 1T$^{\prime}$ transition. This phase consists of four layers in its unit cell, and is constructed by an "AABB" sequence of layer stacking operations rather than the "AB…
The non-centrosymmetric Weyl semimetal candidate, MoTe$_2$ was investigated through neutron diffraction and transport measurements at pressures up to 1.5 GPa and at temperatures down to 40 mK. Centrosymmetric and non-centrosymmetric structural phases were found to coexist in the superconducting state. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the strength of the electron-phonon coupling is similar for both crystal structures. Furthermore, it was found that by controlling non-hydrostatic components of stress, it is possible to mechanically control the ground state crystal structu…
We studied the nonlinear electric response in WTe2 and MoTe2 monolayers. When the inversion symmetry is breaking but the the time-reversal symmetry is preserved, a second-order Hall effect called the nonlinear anomalous Hall effect (NLAHE) emerges owing to the nonzero Berry curvature on the nonequilibrium Fermi surface. We reveal a strong NLAHE with a Hall-voltage that is quadratic with respect to the longitudinal current. The optimal current direction is normal to the mirror plane in these two-dimensional (2D) materials. The NLAHE can be sensitively tuned by an out-of-plane electric field, wh…
We use a combination of Raman spectroscopy and transport measurements to study thin flakes of the type-II Weyl semimetal candidate MoTe2 protected from oxidation. In contrast to bulk crystals, which undergo a phase transition from monoclinic to the inversion symmetry breaking, orthorhombic phase below ~250 K, we find that in moderately thin samples below ~12 nm, a single orthorhombic phase exists up to and beyond room temperature. This could be due to the effect of c-axis confinement, which lowers the energy of an out-of-plane hole band and stabilizes the orthorhombic structure. Our results su…
Moiré materials provide fertile ground for the correlated and topological quantum phenomena. Among them, the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect, in which the Hall resistance is quantized even under zero magnetic field, is a direct manifestation of the intrinsic topological properties of a material and an appealing attribute for low-power electronics applications. The QAH effect has been observed in both graphene and transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) moiré materials. It is thought to arise from the interaction-driven valley polarization of the narrow moiré bands. Here, we show surprisingly…
The Weyl semimetal MoTe$_2$ offers a rare opportunity to study the interplay between Weyl physics and superconductivity. Recent studies have found that Se substitution can boost the superconductivity up to 1.5K, but suppress the Td structure phase that is essential for the emergence of Weyl state. A microscopic understanding of possible coexistence of enhanced superconductivity and the Td phase has not been established so far. Here, we use scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) to study a optimally doped new superconductor MoTe$_{1.85}$Se$_{0.15}$ with bulk Tc ~ 1.5K. By means of quasiparticle in…
In recent years, layered transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have attracted considerable attention because of their rich physics; for example, these materials exhibit superconductivity, charge density waves, and the valley Hall effect. As a result, TMDs have promising potential applications in electronics, catalysis, and spintronics. Despite the fact that the majority of related research focuses on semiconducting TMDs (e.g., MoS2), the characteristics of WTe2 are provoking strong interest in semimetallic TMDs with extremely large magnetoresistance, pressure-driven superconductivity, and th…
The bulk electronic structure of $T_d$-MoTe$_2$ features large hole Fermi pockets at the Brillouin zone center ($Γ$) and two electron Fermi surfaces along the $Γ-X$ direction. However, the large hole pockets, whose existence has important implications for the Weyl physics of $T_d$-MoTe$_2$, has never been conclusively detected in quantum oscillations. This raises doubt about the realizability of Majorana states in $T_d$-MoTe$_2$, because these exotic states rely on the existence of Weyl points, which originated from the same band structure predicted by density functional theory (DFT). Here, we…
Quasi-two dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD) exhibit dramatic properties that may transform electronic and photonic devices. We report on how the anomalously large magnetoresistance (MR) observed under high magnetic field in MoTe$_2$, a type II Weyl semimetal, can be reversibly controlled under tensile strain. The MR is enhanced by as much as ~ 30 % at low temperatures and high magnetic fields, when uniaxial strain is applied along the $a$-crystallographic direction and reduced by about the same amount when strain is applied along the $b$-direction. We show that the large in-pl…
The topology of Weyl semimetals requires the existence of unique surface states. Surface states have been visualized in spectroscopy measurements, but their connection to the topological character of the material remains largely unexplored. 1T'-MoTe2, presents a unique opportunity to study this connection. This material undergoes a phase transition at 240K that changes the structure from orthorhombic (putative Weyl semimetal) to monoclinic (trivial metal), while largely maintaining its bulk electronic structure. Here we show from temperature-dependent quasiparticle interference measurements th…
Here, we report a systematic study on the Hall-effect of the semi-metallic state of bulk MoTe$_2$, which was recently claimed to be a candidate for a novel type of Weyl semi-metallic state. The temperature ($T$) dependence of the carrier densities and of their mobilities, as estimated from a numerical analysis based on the isotropic two-carrier model, indicates that its exceedingly large and non-saturating magnetoresistance may be attributed to a near perfect compensation between the densities of electrons and holes at low temperatures. A sudden increase in hole density, with a concomitant rap…
We report the pressure (p_max = 1.5 GPa) evolution of the crystal structure of the Weyl semimetal T_d-MoTe_2 by means of neutron diffraction experiments. We find that the fundamental non-centrosymmetric structure T_d is fully suppressed and transforms into a centrosymmertic 1T' structure at a critical pressure of p_cr = 1.2 GPa. This is strong evidence for a pressure induced quantum phase transition (QPT) between topological to a trivial electronic state. Although the topological QPT has strong effect on magnetoresistance, it is interesting that the superconducting critical temperature T_c, th…
We present experimental evidence of an intriguing phase transition between distinct topological states in the type-II Weyl semimetal MoTe2. We observe anomalies in the Raman phonon frequencies and linewidths as well as electronic quasielastic peaks around 70 K, which, together with structural, thermodynamic measurements, and electron-phonon coupling calculations, demonstrate a temperature-induced transition between two topological phases previously identified by contrasting spectroscopic measurements. An analysis of experimental data suggests electron-phonon coupling as the main driving mechan…
In recent years, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have garnered great interest as topological materials -- monolayers of centrosymmetric $β$-phase TMDs have been identified as 2D topological insulators (TIs), and bulk crystals of noncentrosymmetric $γ$-phase MoTe$_2$ and WTe$_2$ have been identified as type-II Weyl semimetals. However, ARPES and STM probes of these TMDs have revealed huge, "arc-like" surface states that overwhelm, and are sometimes mistaken for, the much smaller topological surface Fermi arcs of bulk type-II Weyl points. In this letter, we use first-principles calculati…
We use both classical magnetotransport and quantum oscillation measurements to study the thickness evolution of the extremely large magnetoresistance (XMR) material and type-II Weyl semimetal candidate, $γ$-MoTe$_2$, protected from oxidation. We find that the magnetoresistance is systematically suppressed with reduced thickness. This occurs concomitantly with both a decrease in carrier mobility and increase in electron-hole imbalance. We model the two effects separately and conclude that the XMR effect is more sensitive to the former.

Atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenide films with distorted trigonal (1T$^\prime$) phase have been predicted to be candidates for realizing quantum spin Hall effect. Growth of 1T$^\prime$ film and experimental investigation of its electronic structure are critical. Here we report the electronic structure of 1T$^\prime$-MoTe$_2$ films grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Growth of the 1T$^\prime$-MoTe$_2$ film depends critically on the substrate temperature, and successful growth of the film is indicated by streaky stripes in the reflection high energy electron diffraction and sharp …
We predict a nonlinear Hall effect in certain Weyl semimetals with broken inversion symmetry. When the energy dispersions about pairs of Weyl nodes are skewed -- the Weyl cones are "tilted" -- the concerted actions of the anomalous velocity and the chiral anomaly give rise to the nonlinear Hall effect. This Hall conductivity is linear in both electric and magnetic fields, and depends critically on the tilting of the Weyl cones. We also show that this effect does not rely on a finite Berry curvature dipole, in contrast to the intrinsic quantum nonlinear Hall effect that was recently observed in…
We investigate how field-effect doping affects the structural properties, the electronic structure and the Hall coefficient of few-layers transition metal dichalcogenides by using density-functional theory. We consider mono-, bi-, and trilayers of the H polytype of MoS2, MoSe2, MoTe2, WS2, and WSe2 and provide a full database of electronic structures and Hall coefficients for hole and electron doping. We find that, for both electron and hole doping, the electronic structure depends on the number of layers and cannot be described by a rigid band shift. Furthermore, it is important to relax the …
Observation of Weyl and Dirac Fermions in condensed matter systems is one of the most important discoveries. Among the very few available tools to characterize Weyl semimetals through electrical transport, negative magnetoresistance is most commonly used. Considering shortcomings of this method, new tools to characterize chiral anomaly in Weyl semimetals are desirable. We employ planar Hall effect as an effective technique in half Heusler Weyl semimetal GdPtBi to study chiral anomaly. This compound exhibits a large value of 1.5 mohm cm planar Hall resistivity at 2 K and in 9 T. Our analysis re…
Noncentrosymmetric metals are anticipated to exhibit a $dc$ photocurrent in the nonlinear optical response caused by the Berry curvature dipole in momentum space. Weyl semimetals (WSMs) are expected to be excellent candidates for observing these nonlinear effects because they carry a large Berry curvature concentrated in small regions, i.e., near the Weyl points. We have implemented the semiclassical Berry curvature dipole formalism into an $ab~initio$ scheme and investigated the second-order nonlinear response for two representative groups of materials: the TaAs-family type-I WSMs and MoTe$_2…
Dirac and Weyl nodal materials can host low-energy relativistic quasiparticles. Under strong magnetic fields, the topological properties of Dirac/Weyl materials can directly manifest through quantum Hall states. However, most Dirac/Weyl nodes generically exist in semimetals without exploitable bandgaps due to their accidental band-crossing origin. Here we report the first experimental observation of Weyl fermions in a semiconductor. Tellurene, the 2D form of tellurium, possesses chiral crystal structure which induces unconventional Weyl nodes with a hedgehog-like radial spin texture near the c…
The Weyl semimetal requires the breaking of either the time-reversal symmetry (TRS) or the lattice inversion symmetry. When the TRS and inversion symmetry coexist, a pair of degenerate Weyl points may exist, leading to the related Dirac semimetal phase. In other words, a Dirac semimetallic state can be regarded as two copies of Weyl semimetal states. In this dissertation, we study tellurium based compounds like the Weyl semimetal candidate MoTe2 and the Dirac semimetal candidate PtTe2 within the transition metal dichalcogenides family.
We study the ac anomalous Hall conductivity $σ_{xy}(ω)$ of a Weyl semimetal with broken time-reversal symmetry. Even in the absence of free carriers these materials exhibit a "universal" anomalous Hall response determined solely by the locations of the Weyl nodes. We show that the free carriers, which are generically present in an undoped Weyl semimetal, give an additional contribution to the ac Hall conductivity. We elucidate the physical mechanism of the effect and develop a microscopic theory of the free carrier contribution to $σ_{xy}(ω)$. The latter can be expressed in terms of a small nu…
We theoretically investigated the magnetoresistance (MR) and planar Hall effect (PHE) in Weyl semimetals based on the semiclassical Boltzmann theory, focusing on the fine structure of the band dispersion. We identified that the negative longitudinal MR and sign change in the PHE occur because of the negative off-diagonal effective-mass with no topological effects or chiral anomaly physics. Our results highlight the crucial role of the off-diagonal effective-mass, which can cause anomalous galvanomagnetic effects. We propose that the PHE creates a dip in their temperature dependence, which enab…
Since their discovery, topological insulators have been expected to be ideal spintronic materials owing to the spin currents carried by surface states with spin--momentum locking. However, the bulk doping problem remains an obstacle that hinders such application. In this work, we predict that a newly discovered family of topological materials, the Weyl semimetals, exhibits large intrinsic spin Hall effects that can be utilized to generate and detect spin currents. Our $ab~initio$ calculations reveal a large spin Hall conductivity that is comparable to that of $4d$ and $5d$ transition metals. T…
