The longitudinal current in a three-dimensional conductor is accompanied by transverse magnetic field in a specimen bulk. The absence of the transverse current in a sample bulk requires a nonzero Hall electric field in transverse cross-section which provides the Lorentz force cancelation. The longitudinal current itself can be viewed as a collective drift of carriers in crossed magnetic and electric(Hall) fields. At low temperatures the enhanced carrier viscosity leads to nonuniform current flow whose transverse profile is sensitive to presence of $collinear$ diamagnetic currents at the sample inner walls. Former dissipative the longitudinal current becomes purely diamagnetic at certain critical temperature. The superconductivity sets on. The current and transverse magnetic field become pushed out from the sample bulk towards the inner wall. Magnetic properties of a sample resemble those expected for ideal diamagnet. The threshold of superconductivity is calculated for arbitrary temperature, disorder strength, sample size and current and(or) magnetic field strength. Sample-size and magnetic field driven transition from normal metal phase to superconductivity has been studied. The superconductivity phase is not discussed.
The disorder driven quantum Hall to insulator transition is investigated for a two-dimensional lattice model. The Hall conductivity and the localization length are calculated numerically near the transition. For uncorrelated and weakly correlated disorder potentials the current carrying states are annihilated by the negative Chern states originating from the band center. In the presence of correlated disorder potentials with correlation length larger than approximately half the lattice constant the floating up of the critical states in energy without merging is observed. This behavior is simil…
The disorder driven quantum Hall to insulator transition is investigated for a two-dimensional lattice system. We consider a Gaussian correlated random potential, study the behaviour of the current carrying states and trace their energetical position when the disorder strength is increased. Our results qualitatively resemble those obtained previously for exponentially correlated disorder potentials. We find both the downward movement of the anti-Chern states as well as the floating up of the Chern states across the Landau gap which is sometimes masked by the global broadening of the tight bind…
By the method of intense terahertz laser spectroscopy, we provide strong evidence that if an integer quantum Hall (IQH) system has asymmetric confining potential and the external quantizing magnetic field has a nonzero in-plane component, then a quantum phase may arise with spatially-ordered quasi-one-dimensional orbit-like states similar to the current-carrying edging states in conventional IQH system. The emergence of the phase may be interpreted in terms of a quantum phase transition from the IQH system, which is accompanied by the breaking of translational symmetry in the direction of the …
We report results of numerical studies of the integer quantum Hall effect in a tight binding model on a two-dimensional square lattice with non-interacting electrons, in the presence of a random potential as well as a uniform magnetic field applied perpendicular to the lattice. We consider field magnitudes such that the area per flux quantum is commensurate with the lattice structure. Topological properties of the single electron wave functions are used to identify current carrying states that are responsible for the quantized Hall conductance. We study the interplay between the magnetic field…
A novel promising route for creating topological states and excitations is to combine superconductivity and the quantum Hall (QH) effect. Despite this potential, signatures of superconductivity in the quantum Hall regime remain scarce, and a superconducting current through a QH weak link has so far eluded experimental observation. Here we demonstrate the existence of a new type of supercurrent-carrying states in a QH region at magnetic fields as high as 2Tesla. The observation of supercurrent in the quantum Hall regime marks an important step in the quest for exotic topological excitations suc…
The fate of the current carrying states of a quantum Hall system is considered in the situation when the disorder strength is increased and the transition from the quantum Hall liquid to the Hall insulator takes place. We investigate a two-dimensional lattice model with spatially correlated disorder potentials and calculate the density of states and the localization length either by using a recursive Green function method or by direct diagonalization in connection with the procedure of level statistics. From the knowledge of the energy and disorder dependence of the localization length and the…
We study the ground state properties of a ferromagnet-superconductor heterostructure on the basis of a quasiclassical theory. We have solved the Eilenberger equations together with Maxwell's equation fully self-consistently and found that due to the proximity effect a Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) like state is realized in such system. Moreover this state has oscillations of the pairing amplitude in either one or two directions, depending on the exchange splitting and thickness of the ferromagnet. In particular, using semiclassical arguments (Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization rule) we show…
Tunneling of fractionally charged quasiparticles across a two-dimensional electron system on a fractional quantum Hall plateau is expected to be strongly enhanced at low temperatures. This theoretical prediction is at odds with recent experimental studies of samples with weakly-pinched quantum-point-contact constrictions, in which the opposite behavior is observed. We argue here that this unexpected finding is a consequence of electron-electron interactions near the point contact.
A scanning tunneling microscopy based potentiometry technique for the measurements of the local surface electric potential is presented and illustrated by experiments performed on current-carrying thin tungsten films. The obtained results demonstrate a sub-millivolt resolution in the measured surface potential. The application of this potentiometry technique to the local sensing of the spin Hall effect is outlined and some experimental results are reported.
We study the effect of disorder on the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in two-dimensional ferromagnets. The topological nature of AHE leads to the integer quantum Hall effect from a metal, i.e., the quantization of $σ_{xy}$ induced by the localization except for the few extended states carrying Chern number. Extensive numerical study on a model reveals that Pruisken's two-parameter scaling theory holds even when the system has no gap with the overlapping multibands and without the uniform magnetic field. Therefore the condition for the quantized AHE is given only by the Hall conductivity $σ_{xy}$ …
The reentrant integer quantum Hall effects (RIQHE) are due to formation of electronic crystals. We show analytically and numerically that topological textures in the charge density distribution in these crystals in the vicinity of charged defects strongly reduce energy required for current-carrying excitations. The theory quantitatively explains sharp insulator-metal transitions experimentally observed in RIQHE states. The insulator to metal transition in RIQHE emerges as a thermodynamic unbinding transition of topological charged defects.
Recent schemes for experimentally probing non-abelian statistics in the quantum Hall effect are based on geometries where current-carrying quasiparticles flow along edges that encircle bulk quasiparticles, which are localized. Here we consider one such scheme, the Fabry-Perot interferometer, and analyze how its interference patterns are affected by a coupling that allows tunneling of neutral Majorana fermions between the bulk and edge. While at weak coupling this tunneling degrades the interference signal, we find that at strong coupling, the bulk quasiparticle becomes essentially absorbed by …
The spectrum and the eigenstates of a finite 2D tight-binding electronic system, with Dirichlet boundary conditions, in magnetic field and external linear potential are studied. The eigenstates show an equipotential character and may cross the plaquette in the direction perpendicular to the electric field. When leads are added to the plaquette, the channels carrying the current may be shortcut by equipotentials, resulting in additional plateaus situated inbetween the usual IQHE plateaus. This idea is confirmed by a numerical calculation within the four-terminal Landauer-Büttiker approach.
We have investigated the magnetotransport properties of a single-layer graphene Hall bar with additional graphene side gates. The side gating in the absence of a magnetic field can be modeled by considering two parallel conducting channels within the Hall bar. This results in an average penetration depth of the side gate created field of approx. 90 nm. The side gates are also effective in the quantum Hall regime, and allow to modify the longitudinal and Hall resistances.
Despite the robustness of the chiral edge modes of quantum Hall systems against the superconducting proximity effect, Cooper pairs can penetrate into the chiral edge channels and carry the Josephson current in an appropriate setup. In our work, the Josephson junction of a spin-polarized quantum anomalous Hall insulator (QAHI) with a Chern number $ν=1$ connecting conventional superconductors is studied from the perspective of pairing symmetry consistent with the chiral edge mode. Induced pairing states are equal-spin triplet, a combination of the even- and odd-frequency components, nonlocally e…
A numerical study is made of current distribution in small Hall bars with disorder. It is observed, in particular, that in the Hall-plateau regime the Hall current tends to concentrate near the sample edges while it diminishes on average in the sample interior as a consequence of localization. Also reported is another numerical experiment on a related, but rather independent topic, the breakdown of the quantum Hall effect. It is pointed out that the competition of the Hall field with disorder in the sample interior, an intra-subband process, can account for both the magnitude and magnetic-fiel…
We show how a dc current can be generated in a Hall bar without applying a bias voltage. The Hall resistance $R_H$ that corresponds to this pumped current is quantized, just as in the usual integer quantum Hall effect (IQHE). In contrast with the IQHE, however, the longitudinal resistance $R_{xx}$ does not vanish on the plateaus, but equals the Hall resistance. We propose an experimental geometry to measure the pumped current and verify the predicted behavior of $R_H$ and $R_{xx}$.
We analyze electron transport in multiprobe quantum spin Hall (QSH) bars using the Büttiker formalism and draw parallels with their quantum Hall (QH) counterparts. We find that in a QSH bar the measured resistance changes upon introducing side voltage probes, in contrast to the QH case. We also study four- and six-terminal geometries and derive the expressions for the resistances. For these our analysis is generalized from the single-channel to the multi-channel case and to the inclusion of backscattering originating from a constriction placed within the bar.
We have measured magnetotransport of the two-dimensional electron gas in a Hall bar geometry in the presence of small carrier density gradients. We find that the longitudinal resistances measured at both sides of the Hall bar interchange by reversing the polarity of the magnetic field. We offer a simple explanation for this effect and discuss implications for extracting conductivity flow diagrams of the integer quantum Hall effect.
The classical Hall effect, the traditional means of determining charge-carrier sign and density in a conductor, requires a magnetic field to produce transverse voltages across a current-carrying wire. We show that along curved paths -- $\mathrm{\textit{without}}$ any magnetic field -- geometry alone can produce nonlinear transverse potentials that reflect the charge-carrier sign and density. We demonstrate this effect in curved graphene wires where the transverse potentials are consistent with the doping and change polarity as we switch the carrier sign. In straight wires, we measure transvers…
It is well-known that a non-vanishing Hall conductivity requires time-reversal symmetry breaking. However, in this work, we demonstrate that a Hall-like transverse current can occur in second-order response to an external electric field in a wide class of time-reversal invariant and inversion breaking materials, at both zero and twice the optical frequency. This nonlinear Hall effect has a quantum origin arising from the dipole moment of the Berry curvature in momentum space, which generates a net anomalous velocity when the system is in a current-carrying state. We show that the nonlinear Hal…
Micro-magnets are key components for quantum information processing with individual spins, enabling arbitrary rotations and addressability. In this work, characterization of sub-micrometer sized CoFe ferromagnets is performed with Hall bars electrostatically defined in a two-dimensional electron gas. Due to the ballistic nature of electron transport in the cross junction of the Hall bar, anomalies such as the quenched Hall effect appear near zero external magnetic field, thus hindering the sensitivity of the magnetometer to small magnetic fields. However, it is shown that the sensitivity of th…
We investigate theoretically the phase coherence of electron transport in edge states of the integer quantum Hall effect at filling factor $ν=2$, in the presence of disorder and inter-edge state Coulomb interaction. Within a Fokker-Planck approach, we calculate analytically the visibility of the Aharonov-Bohm oscillations of the current through an electronic Mach-Zehnder interferometer. In agreement with recent experiments, we find that the visibility is independent of the energy of the current-carrying electrons injected high above the Fermi sea. Instead, it is the amount of disorder at the e…
In this paper we introduce and study the correlation functions of a chiral one-dimensional electron model intended to qualitatively represent narrow Hall bars separated into left and right sections by a penetrable barrier. The model has two parameters representing respectively interactions between top and bottom edges of the Hall bar and interactions between the edges on opposite sides of the barrier. We show that the scaling dimensions of tunneling processes depend on the relative strengths of the interactions, with repulsive interactions across the Hall bar tending to make breaks in the barr…
The momentum distribution function ($n(k)$) of a narrow Hall bar in the fractional quantum Hall effect regime is investigated using Luttinger liquid and microscopic many-particle wavefunction approaches. For wide Hall bars with filling factor $ν=1/M$, where $M$ is an odd integer, $n(k)$ has singularities at $\pm M k_F$. We find that for narrow Hall bars additional singularities occur at smaller odd integral multiples of $k_F$: $ n(k) \sim A_p \mid k\pm pk_{F} \mid ^{2Δ_{p}-1}$ near $k=\pm pk_{F}$, where $p$ is an odd integer $M,M-2,M-4,...,1$. If inter-edge interactions can be neglected, the e…
The magneto- and Hall resistance of a locally gated cross shaped graphene Hall bar is calculated. The edge of the top gate is placed diagonally across the center of the Hall cross. Four-probe resistance is calculated using the Landauer-Büttiker formalism, while the transmission coefficients are obtained using the non-equilibrium Green's function approach. The interplay between transport due to edge channels and snake states is investigated. When two edge channels are occupied we predict oscillations in the Hall and the bend resistance as function of the magnetic field which are a consequence o…
As a new quantum state, topological insulators have become the focus of condensed matter and material science. The open system research of topological insulators has aroused the interest of many researchers. Recently, many aspects, especially experimental aspects, have been developed rapidly, such as prediction and discovery of many novel quantum effects and applications of topological properties of new materials, but the theoretical research is slightly tough. In this paper, we study the response of topological insulator driven by momentum-carrying single-mode field. We solve the ground state…
An approach to observe snake states in a graphene Hall bar containing a pn-junction is proposed. The magnetic field dependence of the bend resistance in a ballistic graphene Hall bar structure containing a tilted pn-junction oscillates as a function of applied magnetic field. We show that each oscillation is due to a specific snake state that moves along the pn-interface. Furthermore depending on the value of the magnetic field and applied potential we can control the lead in which the electrons will end up and hence control the response of the system.
Harmonic Hall voltage measurements are a wide-spread quantitative technique for the measurement of spin-orbit induced effective fields in heavy-metal / ferromagnet heterostructures. In the vicinity of the voltage pickup lines in the Hall bar, the current is inhomogeneous, which leads to a hitherto not quantified reduction of the effective fields and derived quantities, such as the spin Hall angle or the spin Hall conductivity. Here we present a thorough analysis of the influence of the aspect ratio of the voltage pickup lines to current channel widths on the apparent spin Hall angle. Experimen…
Charge equilibration between quantum-Hall edge states can be studied to reveal geometric structure of edge channels not only in the integer quantum Hall (IQH) regime but also in the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) regime particularly for hole-conjugate states. Here we report on a systematic study of charge equilibration in both IQH and FQH regimes by using a generalized Hall bar, in which a quantum Hall state is nested in another quantum Hall state with different Landau filling factors. This provides a feasible way to evaluate equilibration in various conditions even in the presence of scatterin…
Due to the lack of simulation tools that take into account the actual geometry of complicated quantum Hall samples there are lots of experiments that are not yet fully understood. Already some years ago R. G. Mani recorded a shift of the Hall resistance transitions to lower magnetic fields in samples of a Hall bar with embedded anti-Hall bar by using partial gating. We use a Nonequilibrium Network Model (NNM) to simulate this geometry and find qualitative agreement. Fitting the simulated resistance curves to the experimental results we can not only determine the carrier concentration but also …
The Hall (RH) and bend (RB) resistance of a graphene Hall bar structure containing a pn-junction are calculated when in the ballistic regime. The simulations are done using the billiard model. Introducing a pn-junction--dividing the Hall bar geometry in two regions--leads to two distinct regimes exhibiting very different physics: 1) both regions are of n-type and 2) one region is n-type and the other p-type. In regime (1) a 'Hall plateau'--an enhancement of the resistance--appears for RH. On the other hand, in regime (2), we found a negative RH, which approaches zero for large B. The bend resi…
We study the nu=1/3 quantum Hall state in presence of the random disorder. We calculate the topologically invariant Chern number, which is the only quantity known at present to unambiguously distinguish between insulating and current carrying states in an interacting system. The mobility gap can be determined numerically this way, which is found to agree with experimental value semiquantitatively. As the disorder strength increases towards a critical value, both the mobility gap and plateau width narrow continuously and ultimately collapse leading to an insulating phase.
This work discusses the effect of topology in the frame of direct Coulomb interactions, considering two distinct geometries, namely the Hall bar and the Corbino disc. In the mainstream approaches to the quantized Hall effect, the consequences of interactions are usually underestimated. Here, we investigate the electron number density, potential and current distributions within the screening theory that considers electron-electron interactions. Inclusion of direct Coulomb interaction and realistic boundary conditions result in local metal-like compressible and (Topological) insulator-like incom…
We study the current and charge distribution in a two dimensional electron system, under the conditions of the integer quantized Hall effect, on the basis of a quasi-local transport model, that includes non-linear screening effects on the conductivity via the self-consistently calculated density profile. The existence of ``incompressible strips'' with integer Landau level filling factor is investigated within a Hartree-type approximation, and non-local effects on the conductivity along those strips are simulated by a suitable averaging procedure. This allows us to calculate the Hall and the lo…
The effects of strain, induced by a Gaussian bump, on the magnetic field dependent transport properties of a graphene Hall bar are investigated. The numerical simulations are performed using both classical and quantum mechanical transport theory and we found that both approaches exhibit similar characteristic features. The effects of the Gaussian bump are manifested by a decrease of the bend resistance, $R_B$, around zero-magnetic field and the occurrence of side-peaks in $R_B$. These features are explained as a consequence of bump-assisted scattering of electrons towards different terminals o…
Graphene properties can be manipulated by a periodic potential. Based on the tight-binding model, we study graphene under a one-dimensional (1D) modulated magnetic field which contains both a uniform and a staggered component. New chiral current-carrying edge states are generated at the interfaces where the staggered component changes direction. These edge states lead to an unusual integer quantum Hall effect (QHE) in graphene, which can be observed experimentally by a standard four-terminal Hall measurement. When Zeeman spin splitting is considered, a novel state is predicted where the electr…
We report the observation of negative nonlocal resistances in multiterminal mesoscopic gold Hall bar structures whose characteristic dimensions are larger than the electron mean-free path. Our results can only be partially explained by a classical diffusive model of the nonlocal transport, and are not consistent with a recently proposed model based on spin Hall effects. Instead, our analysis suggests that a quasiballistic transport mechanism is responsible for the observed negative nonlocal resistance. Based on the sensitivity of our measurements and the spin Hall effect model, we find an uppe…
We investigate the magnetic field dependence of the Hall and the bend resistances for a ballistic Hall bar structure containing a pn-junction sculptured from a bilayer of graphene. The electric response is obtained using the billiard model and we investigate the cases of bilayer graphene with and without a band gap. Two different conduction regimes are possible: $i$) both sides of the junction have the same carrier type, and $ii$) one side of the junction is n-type while the other one is p-type. The first case shows Hall plateau-like features in the Hall resistance that fade away as the band g…
We report an experimental demonstration of a local amplification of the spin Hall voltage using an expanding depletion zone at a pn-junction in GaAs/AlGaAs Hall-bar microdevices. It is demonstrated that the depletion zone can be spatially expanded by applying reverse bias by at least 10~$μ$m at low temperature. In the depleted regime, the spin Hall signals reached more than one order of magnitude higher values than in the normal regime at the same electrical current flowing through the micro-device. It is shown that the pn-bias has two distinct effects on the detected spin Hall signal. It cont…
We study edges states of graphene ribbons in the quantized Hall regime, and show that they can be described within a continuum model (the Dirac equation) when appropriate boundary conditions are adopted. The two simplest terminations, zigzag and armchair edges, are studied in detail. For zigzag edges, we find that the lowest Landau level states terminate in two types of edge states, dispersionless and current-carrying surface states. The latter involve components on different sublattices that may be separated by distances far greater than the magnetic length. For armchair edges, the boundary c…
The 2-- to 1--dimensional crossover of the localisation length of electrons confined to a disordered quantum wire of finite width $L_y$ is studied in a model of electrons moving in the potential of uncorrelated impurities. An analytical formula for the localisation length is derived, describing the dimensional crossover as function of width $L_y$, conductance $g$ and perpendicular magnetic field $B$ . On the basis of these results, the scaling analysis of the quantum Hall effect in high Landau levels, and the delocalisation transition in a quantum Hall wire are reconsidered.
Recent spatially resolved measurements of the electrostatic-potential variation across a Hall bar in strong magnetic fields, which revealed a clear correlation between current-carrying strips and incompressible strips expected near the edges of the Hall bar, cannot be understood on the basis of existing equilibrium theories. To explain these experiments, we generalize the Thomas-Fermi--Poisson approach for the self-consistent calculation of electrostatic potential and electron density in {\em total} thermal equilibrium to a {\em local equilibrium} theory that allows to treat finite gradients o…
Current polarization induced rectification of the quantized Hall plateaus (QHPs) is studied within a Hartree type mean field approximation for asymmetrically depleted samples. We first investigate the existence of the current carrying incompressible strips (ISs), by solving the self-consistent equations, and their influence on magneto-transport (MT) properties. Next, the widths of the ISs are examined in terms of the steepness of the confining potential profile considering gate defined Hall bars. The corresponding MT coefficients are calculated using a local Ohm's law for a large fixed current…
In this work we investigate an unusual transport phenomenon observed in two-dimensional electron gas under integer quantum Hall effect conditions. Our calculations are based on the screening theory, using a semi-analytical model. The transport anomalies are \emph{dip} and overshoot effects, where the Hall resistance decreases (or increases) unexpectedly at the quantized resistance plateaus intervals. We report on our numerical findings of the \emph{dip} effect in the Hall resistance, considering GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures in which we investigated the effect under different experimental condi…
At the filling factor $ν=2$ the bilayer quantum Hall system has three phases, the ferromagnetic phase (spin phase), the spin singlet phase (ppin phase) and the canted antiferromagnetic phase. We analyze soft waves and quasiparticle excitations in the spin and ppin phases. It is shown that the dynamic field is the Grassmannian G$_{4,2}$ field carrying four complex degrees of freedom. In each phase there are four complex soft waves (pseudo-Goldstone modes) and one kind of skyrmion excitations (G$_{4,2}$ skyrmions) flipping either spins or pseudospins coherently. An intriguing property is that a …
We investigated the magnetic field dependence of the Hall and the bend resistances in the ballistic regime for a single layer graphene Hall bar structure containing a pn-junction. When both regions are n-type the Hall resistance dominates and Hall type of plateaus are formed. These plateaus occur as a consequence of the restriction on the angle imposed by Snell's law allowing only electrons with a certain initial angles to transmit though the potential step. The size of the plateau and its position is determined by the position of the potential interface as well as the value of the applied pot…
We investigate the coupling between quantum Hall (QH) edge channels (ECs) located at opposite sides of a 50-um-wide Hall bar by exciting a charged wavepacket in one EC and detecting time-dependent current in the other EC. In a QH state, the current shows a peak followed by a dip, demonstrating the existence of capacitive coupling across the incompressible two-dimensional electron system (2DES). The observed magnetic field dependence of the amplitude and time delay of the current suggests that the capacitance is affected by the presence of localized states. We also show that the dominant manner…
In this work, the investigation of magnetic proximity effect was extended to Ta which has been reported to have a negative spin Hall angle. Magnetoresistance and Hall measurements for in-plane and out-of-plane applied magnetic field sweeps were carried out at room temperature. The size of the MR ratio observed (~10-5) and its magnetization direction dependence are similar to that reported in Pt/YIG, both of which can be explained by the spin Hall magnetoresistance theory. Additionally, a flip of magnetoresistance polarity is observed at 4 K in the temperature dependent measurements, which can …
We report on our theoretical investigation of the effects of the confining potential profile and sample size on the electron velocity distribution in (narrow) quantum-Hall systems. The electrostatic properties of the electron system are obtained by the Thomas-Fermi-Poisson nonlinear screening theory. The electron velocity distribution as a function of the lateral coordinate is obtained from the slope of the screened potential at the Fermi level and within the incompressible strips (ISs). We compare our findings with the recent experiments.
Low-temperature screening properties of the inhomogeneous two-dimensional electron gas in a Hall bar subjected to a strong perpendicular magnetic field are explored using a self-consitent approach. An external oscillating modulation potential with an amplitude of the order of the cyclotron energy is added to the electron-confining background potential, and the resulting change of the self-consistent potential is investigated as a function of modulation strength, magnetic field, and temperature. The consequences of Landau-level pinning and the interplay of compressible and incompressible region…
Application of a perpendicular magnetic field to charge neutral graphene is expected to result in a variety of broken symmetry phases, including antiferromagnetic, canted and ferromagnetic. All these phases open a gap in bulk but have very different edge states and non-collinear spin order, recently confirmed experimentally. Here we provide an integrated description of both edge and bulk for the various magnetic phases of graphene Hall bars making use of a non-collinear mean field Hubbard model. Our calculations show that, at the edges, the three types of magnetic order are either enhanced (zi…
Bilayer quantum Hall states support a flow of nearly dissipationless staggered current which can only decay through collective channels. We study the dominant finite-temperature dissipation mechanism which in narrow bars is driven by thermal nucleation of pseudospin solitons. We find the finite-temperature resistivity, predict the resulting staggered current-voltage characteristics, and calculate the associated zero-temperature critical staggered current and gate voltage.
Anomalous and spin Hall effects are investigated theoretically for a magnetic tunnel junction where the applied voltage produces a Rashba spin-or bit coupling within the tunneling barrier layer. The ferromagnetic electrodes are the source of the spin-polarized current. The tunneling electrons experience a spin-orbit coupling inside the barrier due to the applied electrical field. Charge and spin Hall currents are calculated as functions of the position inside the barrier and the angle between the magnetizations of the electrodes. We find that both charge and spin Hall currents are located insi…
