The Poincaré-Lefschetz pairing viewed on Morse complexes

Given a compact manifold with a non-empty boundary and equipped with a generic Morse function (that is, no critical point on the boundary and the restriction to the boundary is a Morse function), we already knew how to construct two Morse complexes, one yielding the absolute homology and the other the relative homology. In this note, we construct a short exact sequence from both of them and the Morse complex of the boundary. Moreover, we define a pairing of the relative Morse complex with the absolute Morse complex which induces the intersection product in homology, in the form due to S. Lefschetz. This the very first step in an ambitious approach towards A $\infty$-structures buildt from similar data.

The Picard-Lefschetz theory of complexified Morse functions

Given a closed manifold N and a self-indexing Morse function f: N --> R with up to four distinct Morse indices, we construct a symplectic Lefschetz fibration pi: E --> C which models the complexification of f on the disk cotangent bundle, f_C : D(T*N) --> C, when f is real analytic. Non-commutative Reidemeister torsion and Morse-Novikov theory

Given a circle-valued Morse function of a closed oriented manifold, we prove that Reidemeister torsion over a non-commutative formal Laurent polynomial ring equals the product of a certain non-commutative Lefschetz-type zeta function and the algebraic torsion of the Novikov complex over the ring. This paper gives a generalization of the result of Hutchings and Lee on abelian coefficients to the case of skew fields. As a consequence we obtain a Morse theoretical and dynamical description of the higher-order Reidemeister torsion.

Indefinite Morse 2-functions; broken fibrations and generalizations

A Morse 2-function is a generic smooth map from a smooth manifold to a surface. In the absence of definite folds (in which case we say that the Morse 2-function is indefinite), these are natural generalizations of broken (Lefschetz) fibrations. We prove existence and uniqueness results for indefinite Morse 2-functions mapping to arbitrary compact, oriented surfaces. Homotopical Dynamics II: Hopf invariants, smoothings and the Morse complex

Morse theory and Lescop's equivariant propagator for 3-manifolds with $b_1=1$ fibered over $S^1$

For a 3-manifold $M$ with $b_1(M)=1$ fibered over $S^1$ and the fiberwise gradient $ξ$ of a fiberwise Morse function on $M$, we introduce the notion of amidakuji-like path (AL-path) on $M$. An AL-path is a piecewise smooth path on $M$ consisting of edges each of which is either a part of a critical locus of $ξ$ or a flow line of $-ξ$. Counting closed AL-paths with signs gives the Lefschetz zeta function of $M$. An invariant of fiberwise Morse functions on surface bundle over $S^1$ by counting graphs

We apply Lescop's construction of $\mathbb{Z}$-equivariant perturbative invariant of knots and 3-manifolds to the explicit equivariant propagator of "AL-paths" given in arXiv:1403.8030. We obtain an invariant $\hat{Z}_n$ of certain equivalence classes of fiberwise Morse functions on a 3-manifold fibered over $S^1$, which can be considered as a higher loop analogue of the Lefschetz zeta function and whose construction will be applied to that of finite type invariants of knots in such a 3-manifold. Spectral analysis of morse-smale gradient flows

On a smooth, compact and oriented manifold without boundary, we give a complete description of the correlation function of a Morse-Smale gradient flow satisfying a certain nonresonance assumption. This is done by analyzing precisely the spectrum of the generator of such a flow acting on certain anisotropic spaces of currents. Combinatorial stratifications and minimality of 2-arrangements

We prove that the complement of any affine 2-arrangement in R^d is minimal, that is, it is homotopy equivalent to a cell complex with as many i-cells as its i-th rational Betti number. For the proof, we provide a Lefschetz-type hyperplane theorem for complements of 2-arrangements, and introduce Alexander duality for combinatorial Morse functions. A homology theory for tropical cycles on integral affine manifolds and a perfect pairing

We introduce a cap product pairing for homology and cohomology of tropical cycles on integral affine manifolds with singularities. We show the pairing is perfect over $\mathbb{Q}$ in degree one when the manifold has at worst symple singularities.
