Chirality plays a major role in nature, from particle physics to DNA, and its control is much sought-after due to the scientific and technological opportunities it unlocks. For magnetic materials, chiral interactions between spins promote the formation of sophisticated swirling magnetic states such as skyrmions, with rich topological properties and great potential for future technologies. Currently, chiral magnetism requires either a restricted group of natural materials or synthetic thin-film systems that exploit interfacial effects. Here, using state-of-the-art nanofabrication and magnetic X-ray microscopy, we demonstrate the imprinting of complex chiral spin states via three-dimensional geometric effects at the nanoscale. By balancing dipolar and exchange interactions in an artificial ferromagnetic double-helix nanostructure, we create magnetic domains and domain walls with a well-defined spin chirality, determined solely by the chiral geometry. We further demonstrate the ability to create confined 3D spin textures and topological defects by locally interfacing geometries of opposite chirality. The ability to create chiral spin textures via 3D nano-patterning alone enables exquisite control over the properties and location of complex topological magnetic states, of great importance for the development of future metamaterials and devices in which chirality provides enhanced functionality.
We report a new type of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) called geometric SOC. Starting from the relativistic theory in curved space, we derive an effective nonrelativistic Hamiltonian in a generic curve embedded into flat three dimensions. The geometric SOC is $O(m^{-1})$, in which $m$ is the electron mass, and hence much larger than the conventional SOC of $O(m^{-2})$. The energy scale is estimated to be a hundred meV for a nanoscale helix. We calculate the current-induced spin polarization in a coupled-helix model as a representative of the chirality-induced spin selectivity. We find that it depen…

Helimagnetic structures, in which the magnetic moments are spirally ordered, host an internal degree of freedom called chirality (or helicity) corresponding to the handedness of the helix. The chirality seems quite robust against disturbances and is therefore promising for next-generation magnetic memory. While the chirality control was recently achieved by the magnetic field sweep with the application of an electric current at low temperature in a conducting helimagnet, problems such as low working temperature and cumbersome control sequence have to be solved in practical applications. Anothe…
We present a theoretical proposal for the Herzberg circuit and controlled accumulation of Berry's phase in a chirality-based coded qubit in a triangular triple quantum dot molecule with one electron spin each. The qubit is encoded in the two degenerate states of a three spin complex with total spin $S=1/2$. Using a Hubbard and Heisenberg model the Herzberg circuit encircling the degeneracy point is realized by adiabatically tuning the successive on-site energies of quantum dots and tunnel couplings across a pair of neighbouring dots. It is explicitly shown that encircling the degeneracy point …
We investigate the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) of ferromagnetic CoNi microhelices fabricated by electrodeposition and laser printing. We find that the geometry of the three-dimensional winding determines a characteristic angular and field-dependence of the AMR due to the competition between helical shape anisotropy and external magnetic field. Moreover, we show that there is an additional contribution to the AMR that scales proportionally to the applied current and depends on the helix chirality. We attribute this contribution to the self magnetic field induced by the current, which mo…
Magnetic helix wire is one of the most simple magnetic systems which manifest properties of both curvature and torsion. There exist two equilibrium states in the helix wire with easy-tangential anisotropy: a quasi-tangential magnetization distribution in case of relatively small curvatures and torsions, and an onion state in opposite case. In the last case the magnetization is close to tangential one, deviations are caused by the torsion and curvature. Possible equilibrium magnetization states in the helix magnet with different anisotropy directions are studied theoretically. The torsion also …
Geometrical dephasing is distinct from dynamical dephasing in that it depends on the trajectory traversed, hence it reverses its sign upon flipping the direction in which the path is traced. Here we study sequences of generalized (weak) measurements that steer a system in a closed trajectory. The readout process is marked by fluctuations, giving rise to dephasing. Rather than classifying the latter as "dynamical" and "geometrical", we identify a contribution which is invariant under reversing the sequence ordering and, in analogy with geometrical dephasing, one which flips its sign upon the re…
Chirality-driven optical properties in charge density waves are of fundamental and practical importance. Here, we investigate the interaction between circularly polarized light and emergent chiral stacking orders in quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) charge-density waves (CDW) with density-functional theory calculations. In our specific system, self-assembled In nanowires on Si(111) surface, spontaneous mirror symmetry breaking leads to symmetrically distinct four degenerate quasi-1D CDW structures, which exhibit geometrical chirality. Such geometrical chirality may naturally induce optically ac…

A minimal model is exactly solved for electron spin transport on a helix. Electron transport is assumed to be supported by well oriented $p_z$ type orbitals on base molecules forming a staircase of definite chirality. In a tight binding interpretation, the SOC opens up an effective $π_z-π_z$ coupling via interbase $p_{x,y}-p_z$ hopping, introducing spin coupled transport. The resulting continuum model spectrum shows two Kramers doublet transport channels with a gap proportional to the SOC. Each doubly degenerate channel satisfies time reversal symmetry, nevertheless, a bias chooses a transport…
Micromagnetic properties of monopoles in artificial kagome spin ice systems are investigated using numerical simulations. We show that micromagnetics brings additional complexity into the physics of these monopoles that is, by essence, absent in spin models: besides a fractionalized classical magnetic charge, monopoles in the artificial kagome ice are chiral at remanence. Our simulations predict that the chirality of these monopoles can be controlled without altering their charge state. This chirality breaks the vertex symmetry and triggers a directional motion of the monopole under an applied…
Chirality in inorganic nanoparticles and nanostructures has gained increasing scientific interest, because of the possibility to tune their ability to interact differently with left- and right-handed circularly polarized light. In some cases, the optical activity is hypothesized to originate from a chiral morphology of the nanomaterial. However, quantifying the degree of chirality in objects with sizes of tens of nanometers is far from straightforward. Electron tomography offers the possibility to faithfully retrieve the three-dimensional morphology of nanomaterials, but only a qualitative int…
We report spin filtration operation considering an antiferromagnetic helix system, possessing zero net magnetization. Common wisdom suggests that for such a system, a spin-polarized current is no longer available from a beam of unpolarized electrons. But, once we apply an electric field perpendicular to the helix axis, a large separation between up and down spin energy channels takes place which yields a high degree of spin polarization. Such a prescription has not been reported so far to the best of our concern. Employing a tight-binding framework to illustrate the antiferromagnetic helix, we…
Magnetic rare-earth / non-magnetic metal superlattices are well-known to display chiral spin helices in the rare-earth layers that propagate coherently across the non-magnetic layers. However, the underlying mechanism that preserves the magnetic phase and chirality coherence across the non-magnetic layers has remained elusive. In this Letter, we use resonant and element-specific x-ray scattering to evidence directly the formation of two fundamentally different long-range modulations in a Holmium/Yttrium (Ho/Y) multilayer: the known Ho chiral spin helix with periodicity 25 Å, and a newly observ…

The observation of chirality is ubiquitous in nature. Contrary to intuition, the population of opposite chiralities is surprisingly asymmetric at fundamental levels. Examples range from parity violation in the subatomic weak force to the homochirality in essential biomolecules. The ability to achieve chirality-selective synthesis (chiral induction) is of great importance in stereochemistry, molecular biology and pharmacology. In condensed matter physics, a crystalline electronic system is geometrically chiral when it lacks any mirror plane, space inversion center or roto-inversion axis. Typica…
Vortex states in magnetic nanodisks are essentially affected by surface/interface induced Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. Within a micromagnetic approach we calculate the equilibrium sizes and shape of the vortices as functions of magnetic field, the material and geometrical parameters of nanodisks. It was found that the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya coupling can considerably increase sizes of vortices with "right" chirality and suppress vortices with opposite chirality. This allows to form a bistable system of homochiral vortices as a basic element for storage applications.
The spin activity in macromolecules such as DNA and oligopeptides, in the context of the Chiral Induced Spin Selectivity (CISS) has been proposed to be due to the atomic Spin-Orbit Coupling (SOC) and the associated chiral symmetry of the structures. This coupling, associated with carbon, nitrogen and oxygen atoms in biological molecules, albeit small (meV), can be enhanced by the geometry, and strong local polarization effects such as hydrogen bonding (HB). A novel way to manipulate the spin degree of freedom is by modifying the spectrum using a coupling to the appropriate electromagnetic radi…
Chirality induced spin selectivity, discovered about two decades ago in helical molecules, is a non-equilibrium effect that emerges from the interplay between geometrical helicity and spin-orbit interactions. Several model Hamiltonians building on this interplay have been proposed and while these can yield spin-polarized transport properties that agrees with experimental observations, they simultaneously depend on unrealistic values of the spin-orbit interaction parameters. It is likely, however, that a common deficit originates from the fact that all these models are uncorrelated, or, single-…

Motivated by recent proposals to realize Majorana bound states in chains and arrays of magnetic atoms deposited on top of a superconductor, we study the topological properties of various chain structures, ladders and two-dimensional arrangements exhibiting magnetic helices. We show that magnetic domain walls where the chirality of a magnetic helix is inverted support two protected Majorana states giving rise to a tunneling conductance peak twice the height of a single Majorana state. The topological properties of coupled chains exhibit nontrivial behaviour as a function of the number of chains…
