We report a new type of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) called geometric SOC. Starting from the relativistic theory in curved space, we derive an effective nonrelativistic Hamiltonian in a generic curve embedded into flat three dimensions. The geometric SOC is $O(m^{-1})$, in which $m$ is the electron mass, and hence much larger than the conventional SOC of $O(m^{-2})$. The energy scale is estimated to be a hundred meV for a nanoscale helix. We calculate the current-induced spin polarization in a coupled-helix model as a representative of the chirality-induced spin selectivity. We find that it depends on the chirality of the helix and is of the order of $0.01 \hbar$ per ${\rm nm}$ when a charge current of $1~{\rm μA}$ is applied.
The chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect gives rise to strongly spin-dependent transport through many organic molecules and structures. Its discovery raises fascinating fundamental questions as well as the prospect of possible applications. The basic phenomenology, a strongly asymmetric magnetoresistance despite the absence of magnetism, is now understood to result from the combination of spin-orbit coupling and chiral geometry. However, experimental signatures of electronic helicity were observed at room temperature, i.e., at an energy scale that exceeds the typical spin-orbit cou…
The chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect has been confirmed experimentally for a large class of organic molecules. Adequately modeling the effect remains a challenging task, with both phenomenological models and first-principle simulations yielding inconclusive results. Building upon a previously presented model by K. Michaeli and R. Naaman (J. Phys. Chem C 123, 17043 (2019)) we systematically investigate an effective 1-dimensional model derived as the limit of a 3-dimensional quantum system with strong confinement and including spin-orbit coupling. Having a simple analytic structu…
Electron exchange and correlations emerging from the coupling between ionic vibrations and electrons are addressed. Spin-dependent electron-phonon coupling originates from the spin-orbit interaction, and it is shown that such electron-phonon coupling introduces exchange splitting between the spin channels in the structure. By application of these results to a model for a chiral molecular structure mounted between metallic leads, the chirality induced spin selectivity is found to become several tens of percents using experimentally feasible parameters.

The elucidation of the mechanisms behind chiral-induced spin selectivity remains an outstanding scientific challenge. Here we consider the role of delocalised phonon modes in electron transport in chiral structures and demonstrate that spin selectivity can originate from spin-dependent energy and momentum conservation in electron-phonon scattering events. While this mechanism is robust to the specifical nature of the vibrational modes, the degree of spin polarization depends on environmental factors, such as external driving fields, temperatures and phonon relaxation rates. This dependence is …

Chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) refers to the fact that electrons get spin polarized after passing through organic chiral molecules in a nanoscale device. In CISS, chiral molecules are commonly believed to be a spin filter through which one favored spin transmits and the opposite spin gets reflected, i.e., transmitted and reflected electrons exhibit opposite spin polarization. In this work, we point out that such a spin filter scenario contradicts the principle that equilibrium spin current must vanish. Instead, we find that both transmitted and reflected electrons present the same t…

Here we propose a mechanism by which spin polarization can be generated dynamically in chiral molecular systems undergoing photo-induced electron transfer. The proposed mechanism explains how spin polarization emerges in systems where charge transport is dominated by incoherent hopping, mediated by spin orbit and electronic exchange couplings through an intermediate charge transfer state. We derive a simple expression for the spin polarization that predicts a non-monotonic temperature dependence consistent with recent experiments. We validate this theory using approximate quantum master equati…
Chirality induced spin selectivity, discovered about two decades ago in helical molecules, is a non-equilibrium effect that emerges from the interplay between geometrical helicity and spin-orbit interactions. Several model Hamiltonians building on this interplay have been proposed and while these can yield spin-polarized transport properties that agrees with experimental observations, they simultaneously depend on unrealistic values of the spin-orbit interaction parameters. It is likely, however, that a common deficit originates from the fact that all these models are uncorrelated, or, single-…

A minimal model is exactly solved for electron spin transport on a helix. Electron transport is assumed to be supported by well oriented $p_z$ type orbitals on base molecules forming a staircase of definite chirality. In a tight binding interpretation, the SOC opens up an effective $π_z-π_z$ coupling via interbase $p_{x,y}-p_z$ hopping, introducing spin coupled transport. The resulting continuum model spectrum shows two Kramers doublet transport channels with a gap proportional to the SOC. Each doubly degenerate channel satisfies time reversal symmetry, nevertheless, a bias chooses a transport…

Central to spintronics is the interconversion between electronic charge and spin currents, and this can arise from the chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect. CISS is often studied as magnetoresistance (MR) in two-terminal (2T) electronic devices containing a chiral (molecular) component and a ferromagnet. However, fundamental understanding of when and how this MR can occur is lacking. Here, we uncover an elementary mechanism that generates such a MR for nonlinear response. It requires energy-dependent transport and energy relaxation within the device. The sign of the MR depends on c…
The strength of the spin-orbit interaction relevant to transport in a low dimensional structure depends critically on the relative geometrical arrangement of current carrying orbitals. Recent tight-binding orbital models for spin transport in DNA-like molecules, have surmised that the band spin-orbit coupling arises from the particular angular relations between orbitals of neighboring bases on the helical chain. Such arrangement could be probed by inducing deformations in the molecule in a conductive probe AFM type setup, as it was recently reported by Kiran, Cohen and Naaman\cite{Kiran}. Here…
The observation of chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS) in biological molecules still awaits a full theoretical explanation. In a recent Rapid Communication, Varela et al. [Phys. Rev. B 101, 241410(R) (2020)] presented a model for electron transport in biological molecules by tunneling in the presence of spin-orbit interactions. They then claimed that their model produces a strong spin asymmetry due to the intrinsic atomic spin-orbit strength. As their Hamiltonian is time-reversal symmetric, this result contradicts a theorem by Bardarson [J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 41, 405203 (2008)], which st…
As nanomagnetic devices scale to smaller sizes, spin-orbit coupling due to the broken structural inversion symmetry at interfaces becomes increasingly important. Here we study interfacial spin-orbit coupling effects in magnetic bilayers using a simple Rashba model. The spin-orbit coupling introduces chirality into the behavior of the electrons and through them into the energetics of the magnetization. In the derived form of the magnetization dynamics, all of the contributions that are linear in the spin-orbit coupling follow from this chirality, considerably simplifying the analysis. For these…

Using the Lagrangian formalism, we solve analytically the equations of motion for current-induced domain-wall dynamics in a ferromagnet with Rashba spin-orbit coupling. An exact solution for the domain wall velocity is provided, including the effect of non-equilibrium conduction electron spin-density, Gilbert damping, and the Rashba interaction parameter. We demonstrate explicitly that the influence of spin-orbit interaction can be qualitatively different from the role of non-adiabatic spin-torque in the sense that the former is sensitive to the chirality of the domain wall whereas the latter …
Inversion symmetry in bilayer graphene allows for layered opposite Rashba spin-orbit coupling (LO-RSOC) -- the situation when the RSOC has the same magnitude but the opposite sign in two coupled spatially separated layers. We show that the LO-RSOC results in the loss of spin chirality in the momentum space, in contrast to the common uniform RSOC. This chirality loss makes it difficult to experimentally establish whether the LO-RSOC (on the scale of 10 meV) exists, because the band structure is insensitive to it. To solve this problem, we propose to identify the LO-RSOC either by gating to brea…
This review focuses on the chirality observed in the excited states of the magnetic order, dielectrics, and conductors that hold transverse spins when they are evanescent. Even without any relativistic effect, the transverse spin of the evanescent waves are locked to the momentum and the surface normal of their propagation plane. This chirality thereby acts as a generalized spin-orbit interaction, which leads to the discovery of various chiral interactions between magnetic, phononic, electronic, photonic, and plasmonic excitations in spintronics that mediate the excitation of quasiparticles in…
We show that a result equivalent to Overhauser's famous Hartree-Fock instability theorem can be established for the case of a two-dimensional electron gas in the presence of Rashba spin-obit coupling. In this case it is the spatially homogeneous paramagnetic chiral ground state that is shown to be differentially unstable with respect to a certain class of distortions of the spin-density-wave and charge-density-wave type. The result holds for all densities. Basic properties of these inhomogeneous states are analyzed.
Time-reversal symmetric charge and spin transport through a molecule comprising two-orbital channels and connected to two leads is analyzed. It is demonstrated that spin-resolved currents are generated when spin-flip processes are accompanied by a flip of the orbital channels. This surprising finding does not contradict Bardarson's theorem [J. H. Bardarson, J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 41, 405203 (2008)] for two-terminal junctions: the transmission does possess two pairs of doubly-degenerate eigenvalues as required by the theorem. The spin-filtering effect is explicitly demonstrated for a two-term…
The helical distribution of the electronic density in chiral molecules, such as DNA and bacteriorhodopsin, has been suggested to induce a spin-orbit coupling interaction that may lead to the so-called chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect. Key ingredients for the theoretical modelling are, in this context, the helically shaped potential of the molecule and, concomitantly, a Rashba-like spin-orbit coupling due to the appearance of a magnetic field in the electron reference frame. Symmetries of these models clearly play a crucial role in explaining the observed effect, but a thorough …
