In this work, we carry out a study of the conserved quantities and dynamical structure of the four-dimensional modified axion electrodynamics theory described by the axion-photon coupling. In the first part of the analysis, we employ the covariant phase space method to construct the conserved currents and to derive the Noether charges associated with the gauge symmetry of the theory. We further derive the improved energy-momentum tensor using the Belinfante-Rosenfeld procedure, which leads us to the expressions for the energy, momentum, and energy flux densities. Thereafter, with the help of Faddeev-Jackiw's Hamiltonian reduction formalism, we obtain the relevant fundamental brackets structure for the dynamic variables and the functional measure for determining the quantum transition amplitude. We also confirm that modified axion electrodynamics has three physical degrees of freedom per space point. Moreover, using this symplectic framework, we yield the gauge transformations and the structure of the constraints directly from the zero-modes of the corresponding presymplectic matrix.
We consider the issue of correspondence between symmetries and conserved quantities in the class of linear relativistic higher-derivative theories of derived type. In this class of models the wave operator is a polynomial in another formally self-adjoint operator, while each isometry of space-time gives rise to the series of symmetries of action functional. If the wave operator is given by n-th-order polynomial then this series includes n independent entries, which can be explicitly constructed. The Noether theorem is then used to construct an n-parameter set of second-rank conserved tensors. …
The construction of a theory of quantum gravity is an outstanding problem that can benefit from better understanding the laws of nature that are expected to hold in regimes currently inaccessible to experiment. Such fundamental laws can be found by considering the classical counterparts of a quantum theory. For example, conservation laws in a quantum theory often stem from conservation laws of the corresponding classical theory. In order to construct such laws, this thesis is concerned with the interplay between symmetries and conservation laws of classical field theories and their application…
The higher derivative field theories are notorious for the stability problems both at classical and quantum level. Classical instability is connected with unboundedness of the canonical energy, while the unbounded energy spectrum leads to the quantum instability. For a wide class of higher derivative theories, including the extended Chern-Simons, other bounded conserved quantities which provide the stability can exist. The most general gauge invariant extended Chern-Simons theory of arbitrary finite order $n$ admits $(n - 1)$-parameter series of conserved energy-momentum tensors. If the $00$-c…
We study the scrambling of local quantum information in chaotic many-body systems in the presence of a locally conserved quantity like charge or energy that moves diffusively. The interplay between conservation laws and scrambling sheds light on the mechanism by which unitary quantum dynamics, which is reversible, gives rise to diffusive hydrodynamics, which is a dissipative process. We obtain our results in a random quantum circuit model that is constrained to have a conservation law. We find that a generic spreading operator consists of two parts: (i) a conserved part which comprises the wei…
We investigate $2n$-dimensional axion electrodynamics for the purpose of exploring a higher-group structure underlying it. This is manifested as a Green-Schwarz transformation of the background gauge fields that couple minimally to the conserved currents. The $n=3$ case is studied most intensively. We derive the identities of correlation functions among the global symmetry generators by using a gauge transformation that maps two correlation functions with each other. A key ingredient in this computation is given by the Green-Schwarz transformation and the 't Hooft anomalies associated with the…
In this work, conserved charges and fluxes at the future null infinity are determined in the asymptotically flat spacetime for Chern-Simons modified gravity. The flux-balance laws are used to constrain the memory effects. For tensor memories, the Penrose's conformal completion method is used to analyze the asymptotic structures and asymptotic symmetries, and then, conserved charges for the Bondi-Metzner-Sachs algebra are constructed with the Wald-Zoupas formalism. These charges take very similar forms to those in Brans-Dicke theory. For the scalar memory, Chern-Simons modified gravity is rewri…
