This paper is concerned with a numerical solution of the acoustic scattering by a bounded impenetrable obstacle in three dimensions. The obstacle scattering problem is formulated as a boundary value problem in a bounded domain by using a Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DtN) operator. An a posteriori error estimate is derived for the finite element method with the truncated DtN operator. The a posteriori error estimate consists of the finite element approximation error and the truncation error of the DtN operator, where the latter is shown to decay exponentially with respect to the truncation parameter. Based on the a posteriori error estimate, an adaptive finite element method is developed for the obstacle scattering problem. The truncation parameter is determined by the truncation error of the DtN operator and the mesh elements for local refinement are marked through the finite element approximation error. Numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
Consider the scattering of a time-harmonic electromagnetic plane wave by an open cavity which is embedded in a perfectly electrically conducting infinite ground plane. This paper concerns the numerical solutions of the open cavity scattering problems in both transverse magnetic and transverse electric polarizations. Based on the Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DtN) map for each polarization, a transparent boundary condition is imposed to reduce the scattering problem equivalently into a boundary value problem in a bounded domain. An a posteriori error estimate based adaptive finite element DtN method is…
Consider the scattering of a time-harmonic elastic plane wave by a bi-periodic rigid surface. The displacement of elastic wave motion is modeled by the three-dimensional Navier equation in an open domain above the surface. Based on the Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DtN) operator, which is given as an infinite series, an exact transparent boundary condition is introduced and the scattering problem is formulated equivalently into a boundary value problem in a bounded domain. An a posteriori error estimate based adaptive finite element DtN method is proposed to solve the discrete variational problem wher…
Consider the elastic scattering of an incident wave by a rigid obstacle in three dimensions, which is formulated as an exterior problem for the Navier equation. By constructing a Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DtN) operator and introducing a transparent boundary condition, the scattering problem is reduced equivalently to a boundary value problem in a bounded domain. The discrete problem with the truncated DtN operator is solved by using the a posteriori error estimate based adaptive finite element method. The estimate takes account of both the finite element approximation error and the truncation erro…

This paper is concerned with the time-dependent acoustic-elastic interaction problem associated with a bounded elastic body immersed in a homogeneous air or fluid above an unbounded rough surface. The well-posedness and stability of the problem are first established by using the Laplace transform and the energy method. A perfectly matched layer (PML) is then introduced to truncate the interaction problem above a finite layer containing the elastic body, leading to a PML problem in a finite strip domain. We further establish the existence, uniqueness and stability estimate of solutions to the P…
We propose an adaptive multigrid preconditioning technology for solving linear systems arising from Discontinuous Petrov-Galerkin (DPG) discretizations. Unlike standard multigrid techniques, this preconditioner involves only trace spaces defined on the mesh skeleton, and it is suitable for adaptive hp-meshes. The key point of the construction is the integration of the iterative solver with a fully automatic and reliable mesh refinement process provided by the DPG technology. The efficacy of the solution technique is showcased with numerous examples of linear acoustics and electromagnetic simul…
Isogeometric analysis with the boundary element method (IGABEM) has recently gained interest. In this paper, the approximability of IGABEM on 3D acoustic scattering problems will be investigated and a new improved BeTSSi submarine will be presented as a benchmark example. Both Galerkin and collocation are considered in combination with several boundary integral equations (BIE). In addition to the conventional BIE, regularized versions of this BIE will be considered. Moreover, the hyper-singular BIE and the Burton--Miller formulation are also considered. A new adaptive integration routine is pr…
Time-domain Boundary Element Methods (BEM) have been successfully used in acoustics, optics and elastodynamics to solve transient problems numerically. However, the storage requirements are immense, since the fully populated system matrices have to be computed for a large number of time steps or frequencies. In this article, we propose a new approximation scheme for the Convolution Quadrature Method (CQM) powered BEM, which we apply to scattering problems governed by the wave equation. We use $\mathcal{H}^2$-matrix compression in the spatial domain and employ an adaptive cross approximation (A…
This article investigates residual a posteriori error estimates and adaptive mesh refinements for time-dependent boundary element methods for the wave equation. We obtain reliable estimates for Dirichlet and acoustic boundary conditions which hold for a large class of discretizations. Efficiency of the error estimate is shown for a natural discretization of low order. Numerical examples confirm the theoretical results. The resulting adaptive mesh refinement procedures in 3d recover the adaptive convergence rates known for elliptic problems.
