The IRIS Mg II k line serves as a very good tool to diagnose the heating processes in solar flares. Recent studies have shown that apart from the usual red asymmetries which are interpreted as the result of condensation downflows, this line could also show a blue-wing enhancement. To investigate how such a blue asymmetry is formed, we perform a grid of radiative hydrodynamic simulations and calculate the corresponding line profiles. We find that such a spectral feature is likely to originate from the upward plasma motion in the upper chromosphere. However, the formation region that is responsible for the blue-wing enhancement could be located in an evaporation region, in an upward moving blob, and even an upward moving condensation region. We discuss how the electron beam parameters affect these different dynamics of the atmosphere.
We analyze spectra of a slipping flare kernel observed during the 2015 June 22 M6.5-class flare by the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS). During the impulsive and peak phases of the flare, loops exhibiting an apparent slipping motion along the ribbons were observed in the 131Å channel of SDO/AIA. The IRIS spectrograph slit observed a portion of the ribbons, including a moving kernel corresponding to a flare loop footpoint in Si IV, C II, and Mg II at a very-high 1 s cadence. The spectra observed in the kernel were mostly redshifted and exhibited pronounced red wings, as typically ob…
Recent observations by the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) have revealed pockets of hot gas ($\sim$2--8$\times$10$^{4}$ K) potentially resulting from magnetic reconnection in the partially ionized lower solar atmosphere (IRIS bombs; IBs). Using joint observations between IRIS and the Chinese New Vacuum Solar Telescope, we have identified ten IBs. We find that three are unambiguously and three others are possibly connected to Ellerman bombs (EBs), which show intense brightening of the extended H$_α$ wings without leaving an obvious signature in the H$_α$ core. These bombs generally…
Recent solar spectroscopic observations have shown that coronal spectral lines can exhibit asymmetric profiles, with enhanced emissions at their blue wings. These asymmetries correspond to rapidly upflowing plasmas at speeds exceeding ~ 50 km/s. Here, we perform a study of the density of the rapidly upflowing material and compare it to that of the line core which corresponds to the bulk of the plasma. For this task we use spectroscopic observations of several active regions taken by the Extreme Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrometer of the Hinode mission. The density sensitive ratio of the Fe XIV li…
We present different signatures of chromospheric evaporation in two solar flares observed by the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS). In the B1.6 flare on 2016 December 6 (SOL2016-12-06T10:40), the transition region Si IV line and the chromospheric C II and Mg II lines show blueshifts with low velocities up to 20 km/s at the flare loop footpoints in the rise phase, indicative of a gentle chromospheric evaporation. While in the C1.6 flare on 2015 December 19 (SOL2015-12-19T10:51), the Si IV, C II, and Mg II lines exhibit redshifts with velocities from several to tens of km/s at the foo…
Chromospheric evaporation refers to dynamic mass motions in flare loops as a result of rapid energy deposition in the chromosphere. These have been observed as blueshifts in X-ray and extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) spectral lines corresponding to upward motions at a few tens to a few hundreds of km/s. Past spectroscopic observations have also revealed a dominant stationary component, in addition to the blueshifted component, in emission lines formed at high temperatures (~10 MK). This is contradictory to evaporation models predicting predominant blueshifts in hot lines. The recently launched Interf…
We study point-like explosive events (EE), characterized by emission in the far wings of spectral lines, in a quiet region near the South Pole, using Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) spectra at two slit positions, slit-jaw (SJ) observations and Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) images. The events were best visible in SiIV spectra; they were weak in SJs, occasionally visible in 1600 A and 304 A AIA images, and invisible in higher temperature AIA images. We identified EEs from position--time images in the far wings of the SiIV lines and measured their distance from the limb. A Gauss…
In order to investigate the near wing of the Lyman-alpha line, accurate line profile calculations and molecular data are both required due to the existence of a close line satellite responsible for its asymmetrical shape. Lyman-alpha lines observed with the Cosmic Origin Spectograph (COS) on the Hubble Space Telescope ( HST) show this peculiarity in the spectra of DBA and DA white dwarf stars. A similar asymmetrical shape in the blue wing can be predicted in the Balmer-alpha line of H perturbed by He and H atoms. In continuation with a very recent work on the Lyman-alpha line, where the n=2 po…
The Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) has observed bright spots at the transition region footpoints associated with heating in the overlying loops, as observed by coronal imagers. Some of these brightenings show significant blueshifts in the Si iv line at 1402.77 A (logT[K] = 4.9). Such blueshifts cannot be reproduced by coronal loop models assuming heating by thermal conduction only, but are consistent with electron beam heating, highlighting for the first time the possible importance of non-thermal electrons in the heating of non-flaring active regions. Here we report on the coron…
We performed coordinated observations of AR 12205, which produced a C-class flare on 2014 November 11, with the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) and the Domeless Solar Telescope (DST) at Hida Observatory. Using spectral data in the Si IV 1403 Å, C II 1335 Å, and Mg II h and k lines from IRIS and the Ca II K, Ca II 8542 Å, and H$α$ lines from DST, we investigated a moving flare kernel during the flare. In the Mg II h line, the leading edge of the flare kernel showed the intensity enhancement in the blue wing, and the smaller intensity of the blue-side peak (h2v) than that of the red…
We analyzed spectral and imaging data from the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS), images from the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) aboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), and magnetograms from the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) aboard SDO. We report observations of small flaring loops in the penumbra of a large sunspot on July 19, 2013. Our main event consisted of a loop spanning ~ 15 arcsec, from the umbral-penumbral boundary to an opposite polarity region outside the penumbra. It lasted approximately 10 minutes with a two minute impulsive peak and was observed in al…
The physical properties and its contribution to the onset of solar flare are still unclear although chromospheric brightening is considered a precursor phenomenon of flare. Many studies suggested that photospheric magnetic field changes cause destabilization of large-scale coronal structure. We aim to understand how a small photospheric change contributes to a flare and to reveal how the intermediary chromosphere behaves in the precursor phase. We analyzed the precursor brightening of the X1.6 flare on 2014 October 22 in the AR 12192 using the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) and H…
We present spectroscopic and imaging observations of small-scale reconnection events on the Sun. Using the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) observations, one reconnection event is first detected as IRIS jets with fast bi-directional velocities in the chromosphere and transition region, which are identified as non-Gaussian broadenings with two extended wings in the line profiles of Si iv, C ii, and Mg ii k. The magnetograms under the IRIS jets from Helioseismic and Magnetic Images exhibit magnetic flux cancellation simultaneously, supporting that the IRIS jets are driven by magnetic…
Ellerman bombs (EBs) are a kind of solar activities that is suggested to occur in the lower atmosphere. Recent observations using the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) show connections of EBs and IRIS bombs (IBs), implying that EBs might be heated to a much higher temperature ($8\times10^{4}$ K) than previous results. Here we perform a spectral analysis of the EBs simultaneously observed by the Fast Imaging Solar Spectrograph (FISS) and IRIS. The observational results show clear evidence of heating in the lower atmosphere, indicated by the wing enhancement in H$α$, Ca II 8542 Å and …
Transition-region explosive events (EEs) are characterized by non-Gaussian line profiles with enhanced wings at Doppler velocities of 50-150 km/s. They are believed to be the signature of solar phenomena that are one of the main contributors to coronal heating. The aim of this study is to investigate the link of EEs to dynamic phenomena in the transition region and chromosphere in an active region. We analyze observations simultaneously taken by the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) in the Si IV 1394Å line and the slit-jaw (SJ) 1400Å images, and the Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope (SST)…
Ellerman bombs are transient brightenings of the extended wings of the solar Balmer lines in emerging active regions. We describe their properties in the ultraviolet lines sampled by the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS), using simultaneous imaging spectroscopy in H$α$ with the Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope (SST) and ultraviolet images from the Solar Dynamics Observatory for Ellerman bomb detection and identification. We select multiple co-observed Ellerman bombs for detailed analysis. The IRIS spectra strengthen the view that Ellerman bombs mark reconnection between bipolar kilogauss…
Recent imaging observations with the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograp (IRIS) have revealed prevalent intermittent jets with apparent speeds of 80--250 km~s$^{-1}$ from the network lanes in the solar transition region (TR). On the other hand, spectroscopic observations of the TR lines have revealed the frequent presence of highly non-Gaussian line profiles with enhanced emission at the line wings, often referred as explosive events (EEs). Using simultaneous imaging and spectroscopic observations from IRIS, we investigate the relationship between EEs and network jets. We first identify EEs f…
We present study of a typical explosive event (EE) at sub-arcsecond scale witnessed by strong non-Gaussian profiles with blue- and red-shifted emission of up to 150 km/s seen in the transition-region Si IV 1402.8 Å, and the chromospheric Mg II k 2796.4 Å and C II 1334.5 Å observed by the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph at unprecedented spatial and spectral resolution. For the first time a EE is found to be associated with very small-scale ($\sim$120 km wide) plasma ejection followed by retraction in the chromosphere. These small-scale jets originate from a compact bright-point-like struc…
APO & SMARTS flare star campaign observations I. Blue wing asymmetries in chromospheric lines during mid M dwarf flares from simultaneous spectroscopic and photometric observation data
本文通过对三颗中期 M 矮星的同时光谱与测光观测,发现 7 次耀发在 Hα 等色球谱线中呈现蓝翼不对称性,并据此估计了可能的暗条爆发质量及其与 CME 的关系。
The Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) reveals small-scale rapid brightenings in the form of bright grains all over coronal holes and the quiet sun. These bright grains are seen with the IRIS 1330 Å, 1400 Å and 2796 Å slit-jaw filters. We combine coordinated observations with IRIS and from the ground with the Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope (SST) which allows us to have chromospheric (Ca II 8542 Å, Ca II H 3968 Å, Hα, and Mg II k 2796 Å), and transition region (C II 1334 Å, Si IV 1402) spectral imaging, and single-wavelength Stokes maps in Fe I 6302 Åat high spatial (0.33"), temporal and…

In this paper we emphasize the non-Lorentzian behavior of the Balmer series in helium-dominated DBA white dwarf stars for which the decades-old problem exists for the determination of the hydrogen abundance. In a very recent work, we have shown that quasi-molecular line satellites due to H-He and H-H collisions are responsible for the asymmetrical shape of the Lyman-alpha lines observed with the Cosmic Origin Spectrograph (COS) and that a similar asymmetry exists for the Balmer-alpha line profiles. In continuation with very recent work, where the n=2, 3 potential energies and transition dipole…
The Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph(IRIS) with its high spatial and temporal resolution brings exceptional plasma diagnostics of solar chromospheric and coronal activity during magnetic reconnection. The aim of this work is to study the fine structure and dynamics of the plasma at a jet base forming a mini flare between two emerging magnetic fluxes (EMFs) observed with IRIS and the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) instruments. We proceed to a spatio-temporal analysis of IRIS spectra observed in the spectral ranges of Mg II, C II, and Si IV ions. Doppler velocities from Mg II lines are co…
Active region (AR) outflows have been studied in detail since the launch of \textit{Hinode}/EIS and are believed to provide a possible source of mass and energy to the slow solar wind. In this work, we investigate the lower atmospheric counterpart of AR outflows using observations from the \textit{Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph} (\textit{IRIS}). We find that the \textit{IRIS} \siiv, \cii\ and \mgii\ transition region (TR) and chromospheric lines exhibit different spectral features in the outflows as compared to neighboring regions at the footpoints ("moss") of hot AR loops. The average …
Ellerman bombs (EBs) have been widely studied over the past two decades; however, only recently have counterparts of these events been observed in the quiet-Sun. The aim of this article is to further understand small-scale quiet-Sun Ellerman-like brightenings (QSEBs) through research into their spectral signatures, including investigating whether the hot signatures associated with some EBs are also visible co-spatial to any QSEBs. We combine H$α$ and Ca II $8542$ Å line scans at the solar limb with spectral and imaging data sampled by the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS). Twenty on…
Spectral observations below Lyman-alpha are now obtained with the Cosmic Origin Spectrograph (COS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). It is therefore necessary to provide an accurate treatment of the blue wing of the Lyman-alpha line that enables correct calculations of radiative transport in DA and DBA white dwarf stars. On the theoretical front, we very recently developed very accurate H-He potential energies for the hydrogen 1s, 2s, and 2p states. Nevertheless, an uncertainty remained about the asymptotic correlation of the Sigma states and the electronic dipole transition moments. A simi…
The Mg II h&k lines are the prime chromospheric diagnostics of NASA's Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS). In the previous papers of this series we used a realistic three-dimensional radiative magnetohydrodynamics model to calculate the h&k lines in detail and investigated how their spectral features relate to the underlying atmosphere. In this work, we employ the same approach to investigate how the h&k diagnostics fare when taking into account the finite resolution of IRIS and different noise levels. In addition, we investigate the diagnostic potential of several other photospheric …
We present temporal variations of the Si IV line profiles at the flare ribbons in three solar flares observed by the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS). In the M1.1 flare on 2014 September 6 and the X1.6 flare on 2014 September 10, the Si IV line profiles evolve from wholly redshifted to red-wing enhanced with the flare development. However, in the B1.8 flare on 2016 December 2, the Si IV line profiles are wholly redshifted throughout the flare evolution. We fit the wholly redshifted line profiles with a single Gaussian function but the red-asymmetric ones with a double Gaussian func…
Coronal holes (CHs) regions are dark in comparison to the quiet-Sun (QS) at the coronal temperatures. However, at chromospheric and transition region (TR) temperatures, QS and CHs are hardly distinguishable. In this study we have used the \ion{Mg}{2}~2796.35~Å spectral line recorded by the Interface Region Imaging Spectrometer (IRIS) to understand the similarities and differences in the QS and CH at chromospheric levels. Our analysis reveals that the emission from \ion{Mg}{2}~k3 \& k2v that originates in the chromosphere is significantly lower in CH than in QS for the regions with similar magn…
Coronal upflows at the edges of active regions (AR), which are a possible source of slow solar wind, have been found to connect with dynamics in the transition region. To infer at what scale transition region dynamics connect to AR upflows, we investigate the statistical properties of the small-scale dynamics in the transition region underneath the upflows at the edge of AR NOAA 11934. With observations from the Interface Region Imaging Spectragraph (IRIS), we found that the Si IV 1403\,Å Doppler map consists of numerous blue-shifted and red-shifted patches mostly with sizes less than 1\,$Mm^2…
Multi-wavelength ultraviolet (UV) observations by the IRIS satellite in active region NOAA 12529 have recently pointed out the presence of long-lasting brightenings, akin to UV bursts, and simultaneous plasma ejections occurring in the upper chromosphere and transition region during secondary flux emergence. These signatures have been interpreted as evidence of small-scale, recurrent magnetic reconnection episodes between the emerging flux region (EFR) and the pre-existing plage field. Here, we characterize the UV emission of these strong, intermittent brightenings and we study the surge activ…
A three-dimensional picture of the solar atmosphere's thermodynamics can be obtained by jointly analyzing multiple spectral lines that span many formation heights. In paper I, we found strong correlations between spectral shapes from a variety of different ions during solar flares in comparison to the quiet Sun. We extend these techniques to address the following questions: which regions of the solar atmosphere are most connected during a solar flare, and what are the most likely responses across several spectral windows based on the observation of a single Mg II spectrum? Our models are deriv…
Loops are one of the fundamental structures that trace the geometry of the magnetic field in the solar atmosphere. Their evolution and dynamics provide a crucial proxy for studying how the magnetized structures are formed and heated in the solar atmosphere. Here, we report on spectroscopic observations of a set of transition region loops taken by the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) at Si IV 1394 Å with a sit-and-stare mode. The loops are corresponding to the flux emergence at its very late phase when the emerged magentic features in the photosphere have fully developed. We find th…
A triplet of subordinate lines of Mg II exists in the region around the h&k lines. In solar spectra these lines are seen mostly in absorption, but in some cases can become emission lines. The aim of this work is to study the formation of this triplet, and investigate any diagnostic value they can bring. Using 3D radiative magnetohydrodynamic simulations of quiet Sun and flaring flux emergence, we synthesize spectra and investigate how spectral features respond to the underlying atmosphere. We find that emission in the lines is rare and is typically caused by a steep temperature increase in the…
We analyze observations from the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph of the Mg II k line, the Mg II UV subordinate lines, and the O I 135.6 nm line to better understand the solar plage chromosphere. We also make comparisons with observations from the Swedish 1 m Solar Telescope of the Hα line, the Ca II 8542 line, and Solar Dynamics Observatory/Atmospheric Imaging Assembly observations of the coronal 19.3 nm line. To understand the observed Mg II profiles, we compare these observations to the results of numerical experiments. The single-peaked or flat-topped Mg II k profiles found in plage i…
We observed rapid variability ($\lesssim 60$ s) at the footpoints of transient hot ($\sim 8-10$ MK) coronal loops in active region cores, with the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS). The high spatial ($\sim 0.33$ arcsec) and temporal ($\lesssim 5$-10 s) resolution is often crucial for the detection of this variability. We show how, in combination with 1D RADYN loop modeling, these IRIS spectral observations of the transition region (TR) and chromosphere provide powerful diagnostics of the properties of coronal heating and energy transport (thermal conduction and/or non-thermal electr…
In this study, we investigate motions in the hot plasma above the flare loops during the 2017 September 10 X8.2 flare event. We examine the region to the south of the main flare arcade, where there is data from the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS), and the Extreme ultraviolet Imaging Spectrometer (EIS) on Hinode. We find that there are initial blue shifts of 20--60 km/s observed in this region in the Fe XXI line in IRIS and the Fe XXIV line in EIS, and that the locations of these blue shifts move southward along the arcade over the course of about 10 min. The cadence of IRIS allows…
NASA's Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) small explorer mission will study how the solar atmosphere is energized. IRIS contains an imaging spectrograph that covers the Mg II h&k lines as well as a slit-jaw imager centered at Mg II k. Understanding the observations requires forward modeling of Mg II h&k line formation from 3D radiation-MHD models. We compute the vertically emergent h&k intensity from a snapshot of a dynamic 3D radiation-MHD model of the solar atmosphere, and investigate which diagnostic information about the atmosphere is contained in the synthetic line profiles. We …
Our understanding of the process of fast reconnection has undergone a dramatic change in the last 10 years driven, in part, by the availability of high-resolution numerical simulations that have consistently demonstrated the break-up of current sheets into magnetic islands, with reconnection rates that become independent of Lundquist number, challenging the belief that fast magnetic reconnection in flares proceeds via the Petschek mechanism that invokes pairs of slow-mode shocks connected to a compact diffusion region. The reconnection sites are too small to be resolved with images but these r…
We present the study of the X2-class flare which occurred on the 27 October 2014 and was observed with the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) and the EUV Imaging Spectrometer (EIS) on board the Hinode satellite. Thanks to the high cadence and spatial resolution of the IRIS and EIS instruments, we are able to compare simultaneous observations of the \xxi~1354.08~Å~and \xxiii~263.77~Å~high temperature emission ($\gtrsim$ 10~MK) in the flare ribbon during the chromospheric evaporation phase. We find that IRIS observes completely blue-shifted \xxi~line profiles, up to 200 km s$^{-1}$ dur…
To study motions and oscillations in the solar chromosphere and at the transition region (TR) level we analyze some extreme Doppler shifts observed off-limb with the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS). Raster scans and slit-jaw imaging observations performed in the near-ultraviolet (NUV) channels were used. Large transverse oscillations are revealed by the far wings profiles after accurately removing the bulk average line profiles of each sequence. Different regions around the Sun are considered. Accordingly, the cool material of spicules is observed in Mg II lines rather dispersed u…
Solar ultraviolet (UV) bursts are small-scale compact brightenings in transition region images. The spectral profiles of transition region lines in these bursts are significantly enhanced and broadened, often with chromospheric absorption lines such as Ni~{\sc{ii}} 1335.203 and 1393.330 Å superimposed. We investigate the properties of several UV bursts using a coordinated observation of the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS), Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), and \textit{Hinode} on 2015 February 7. We have identified 12 UV bursts, and 11 of them reveal small blueshifts of the Ni~{\sc…
We present new results on the classical T Tauri star RU Lupi based on three observing runs collecting high-resolution spectra, complementary NIR spectra, multicolour photometric data, and X-ray observations. The photospheric absorption lines are weakened. This veiling becomes extremely strong on occasion, and we show that this effect is due to narrow emission lines that fill in the photospheric lines. The blue-shifted wings in the optical emission lines of He I, attributed to a stellar wind, are remarkably stable in equivalent width. In contrast, the red-shifted wings change dramatically in st…
We investigate the relationship between the blue shifts of a hot emission line and the nonthermal emissions in microwave and hard X-ray (HXR) wavelengths during the precursor of a solar flare on 2014 October 27. The flare precursor is identified as a small but well-developed peak in soft X-ray and extreme-ultraviolet passbands before the GOES flare onset, which is accompanied by a pronounced burst in microwave 17 & 34 GHz and HXR 25-50 keV. The slit of Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) stays at one ribbon-like transient during the flare precursor, where shows visible nonthermal emis…
Context. The details of the spectral profiles of extreme UV emission lines from solar active regions contain key information to investigate the structure, dynamics, and energetics of the solar upper atmosphere. Aims. We characterize the line profiles not only through the Doppler shift and intensity of the bulk part of the profile. More importantly, we investigate the excess emission and asymmetries in the line wings to study twisting motions and helicity. Methods. WeusearasterscanoftheInterfaceRegionImagingSpectrograph(IRIS)inanactive region. We concentrate on the Si iv line at 1394 Å that for…
Coronal Holes (CHs) have subdued intensity and net blueshifts when compared to Quiet Sun (QS) at coronal temperatures. At transition region temperatures, such differences are obtained for regions with identical photospheric absolute magnetic flux density ($\vert$B$\vert$). In this work, we use spectroscopic measurements of the \car 1334~Å line from Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS), formed at chromospheric temperatures, to investigate the intensity, Doppler shift, line width, skew, and excess kurtosis variations with $\vert$B$\vert$. We find the intensity, Doppler shift, and line wi…
Helical magnetic flux rope (MFR) is a fundamental structure of corona mass ejections (CMEs) and has been discovered recently to exist as a sigmoidal channel structure prior to its eruption in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) high temperature passbands of the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA). However, when and where the MFR is built up are still elusive. In this paper, we investigate two MFRs (MFR1 and MFR2) in detail, whose eruptions produced two energetic solar flares and CMEs on 2014 April 18 and 2014 September 10, respectively. The AIA EUV images reveal that for a long time prior to their er…
Stellar activity is ubiquitously encountered in M dwarfs and often characterised by the H$α$ line. In the most active M dwarfs, H$α$ is found in emission, sometimes with a complex line profile. Previous studies have reported extended wings and asymmetries in the H$α$ line during flares. We used a total of 473 high-resolution spectra of 28 active M dwarfs obtained by the CARMENES (Calar Alto high-Resolution search for M dwarfs with Exo-earths with Near-infrared and optical Echelle Spectrographs) spectrograph to study the occurrence of broadened and asymmetric H$α$ line profiles and their associ…
Dynamics of hot chromospheric plasma of solar flares is a key to understanding of mechanisms of flare energy release and particle acceleration. A moderate M1.0 class flare of 12 June, 2014 (SOL2014-06-12T21:12) was simultaneously observed by NASA's Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS), other spacecraft, and also by New Solar Telescope (NST) at the BBSO. This paper presents the first part of our investigation focused on analysis of the IRIS data. Our analysis of the IRIS data in different spectral lines reveals strong redshifted jet-like flow with the speed of ~100 km/s of the chromosph…
Mg II lines represent one of the strongest emissions from the chromospheric plasma during solar flares. In this article, we studied the Mg II lines observed during the X1 flare on March 29 2014 (SOL2014-03-29T17:48) by IRIS. IRIS detected large intensity enhancements of the Mg II h and k lines, subordinate triplet lines, and several other metallic lines at the flare footpoints during this flare. We have used the advantage of the slit-scanning mode (rastering) of IRIS and performed, for the first time, a detailed analysis of spatial and temporal variations of the spectra. Moreover, we were also…
Observations of recurrent explosive events (EEs) with time scale of 3-5 minutes are reported. These EEs have been observed with the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) and have a spatial dimension of $\sim1.5"$ along the slit. The spectral line profiles of \ion{C}{2}~$1335/1336$ Å and \ion{Si}{4}~$1394/1403$ Å become highly broadened both in red as well as blue wings. Several absorption lines on top of the broadened profiles were identified. In addition, emission lines corresponding to neutral lines such as \ion{Cl}{1}~1351.66~Å, \ion{C}{1}~1354.29~Å, and \ion{C}{1}~1355.84~Å were ide…
We use coordinated observations with the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) and the Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope (SST) to identify the disk counterpart of type II spicules in upper-chromospheric and transition region (TR) diagnostics. These disk counterparts were earlier identified through short-lived asymmetries in chromospheric spectral lines: rapid blue- or red-shifted excursions (RBEs or RREs). We find clear signatures of RBEs and RREs in Mg II h & k, often with excursions of the central h3 and k3 absorption features in concert with asymmetries in co-temporal and co-spatial H-alph…
Context: Flare kernels brighten simultaneously in all SDO/AIA channels making it difficult to determine their temperature structure. IRIS is able to spectrally resolve Fe xxi emission from cold chromospheric brightenings, so can be used to infer the amount of Fe xxi emission in 131 channel. Aims: We use observations of two small solar flares seen by IRIS and SDO to compare the EMs deduced from the IRIS Fe xxi line and the AIA 131 channel to determine the fraction of Fe xxi emission in flare kernels in the 131 channel of AIA. Methods: Cotemporal and cospatial pseudo-raster AIA images are compar…
Context. The wings of the Ca II H and K lines provide excellent photospheric temperature diagnostics. At the Swedish 1-meter Solar Telescope the blue wing of Ca II H is scanned with a narrowband interference filter mounted on a rotation stage. This provides up to 0"10 spatial resolution filtergrams at high cadence that are concurrent with other diagnostics at longer wavelengths. Aims. The aim is to develop observational techniques that provide the photospheric temperature stratification at the highest spatial resolution possible and use those to compare simulations and observations at differen…
The Interface Region Imaging Spectrometer (IRIS) is the first solar instrument to observe $\sim 10$ MK plasma at subarcsecond spatial resolution through imaging spectroscopy of the Fe XXI $λ$1354.1 forbidden line. IRIS observations of the X1 class flare that occurred on 2014 March 29 at 17:48 UT reveal Fe XXI emission from both the flare ribbons and the post-flare loop arcade. Fe XXI appears at all of the chromospheric ribbon sites, although typically with a delay of one raster (75 seconds) and sometimes offset by up to 1$^{\prime\prime}$. 100--200 km s$^{-1}$ blue-shifts are found at the brig…
The Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) provides spectroscopy and narrow band slit-jaw (SJI) imaging of the solar chromosphere and transition region at unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution. Combined with high-resolution context spectral imaging of the photosphere and chromosphere as provided by the Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope (SST), we can now effectively trace dynamic phenomena through large parts of the solar atmosphere in both space and time. IRIS SJI 1400 images from active regions, which primarily sample the transition region with the Si IV 1394 and 1403 Å lines, reveal …
Imaging spectroscopy of the solar atmosphere using the NaI D1 line yields marked asymmetry between the blue and red line wings: sampling a quiet-Sun area in the blue wing displays reversed granulation, whereas sampling in the red wing displays normal granulation. The MgI b2 line of comparable strength does not show this asymmetry, nor does the stronger CaII 8542 line. We demonstrate the phenomenon with near-simultaneous spectral images in NaI D1, MgI b2, and CaII 8542 from the Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope. We then explain it with line-formation insights from classical 1D modeling and with a 3D …
With observations of IRIS, we study chromospheric heating and evaporation during an M1.6 flare SOL2015-03-12T11:50. At the flare ribbons, the Mg II 2791.59 line shows quasi-periodic short-duration red-wing enhancement, which is likely related to repetitive chromospheric condensation as a result of episodic heating. On the contrary, the Si IV 1402.77 line reveals a persistent red-wing asymmetry in both the impulsive and decay phases, suggesting that this line responds to both cooling downflows and chromospheric condensation. The first two episodes of red-wing enhancement occurred around 11:42 U…
The Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) small explorer spacecraft provides simultaneous spectra and images of the photosphere, chromosphere, transition region, and corona with 0.33-0.4 arcsec spatial resolution, 2 s temporal resolution and 1 km/s velocity resolution over a field-of-view of up to 175 arcsec x 175 arcsec. IRIS was launched into a Sun-synchronous orbit on 27 June 2013 using a Pegasus-XL rocket and consists of a 19-cm UV telescope that feeds a slit-based dual-bandpass imaging spectrograph. IRIS obtains spectra in passbands from 1332-1358, 1389-1407 and 2783-2834 Angstrom …
We have performed 5 night spectroscopic observation of the Halpha line of EV Lac with a medium wavelength resolution (R~ 10,000) using the 2m Nayuta telescope at the Nishi-Harima Astronomical Observatory. EV Lac always possesses the Halpha emission line; however, its intensity was stronger on August 15, 2015 than during other four-night periods. On this night, we observed a rapid rise (~ 20min) and a subsequent slow decrease (~ 1.5h) of the emission-line intensity of Halpha, which was probably caused by a flare. We also found an asymmetrical change in the Halpha line on the same night. The enh…
