We present our ALMA Band 8 observations of a damped Ly$α$ absorption (DLA) system at $z$=3.150 observed in the spectrum of the quasar Q2233+131 at $z$=3.295. The optical counterpart of this DLA has been identified and it shows a double-peaked Ly$α$ emission line. Since one possible origin of DLAs at high redshift is an outflowing gas from star-forming galaxies, DLA2233+131 provides a good laboratory to investigate the nature of high-$z$ DLAs. Motivated by this, we have carried out ALMA band 8 observations to study the [C II] line in this system. However, we do not detect any significant emission line in the observed pass bands. Instead, we have serendipitously found three submm continuum sources in the observed sky area. One appears to be the quasar Q2233+131 itself while the other two sources are newly identified submm galaxies (SMGs), called SMG1 and SMG2 in this paper. They are located at a separation of 400.7 and 800.1 from Q2233+131, respectively. Their 646 $μ$m fluxes are 6.35 mJy and 6.43 mJy, respectively, being higher than that of Q2233+131, 3.62 mJy. Since these two SMGs are not detected in the optical images obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope and the Subaru Telescope, they have a very red spectral energy distribution. It is, therefore, suggested that they are high-redshift galaxies or very dusty galaxies at intermediate redshift although we cannot rule out the possibility that they are optically very faint SMG analogs at low redshift. Follow up observations will be necessary to explore the nature of this interesting region.
We have exploited ALMA calibration observations to carry out a novel, wide and deep submm survey, ALMACAL. These calibration data comprise a large number of observations of calibrator fields in a variety of frequency bands and array configurations. Gathering together data acquired during multiple visits to many ALMA calibrators, it is possible to reach noise levels which allow the detection of faint dusty, star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) over a significant area. In this paper we outline our survey strategy and report the first results. We have analysed data for 69 calibrators, reaching depths of…
We report optical-infrared (IR) properties of faint 1.3 mm sources (S_1.3mm = 0.2-1.0 mJy) detected with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Survey (SXDS) field. We searched for optical/IR counterparts of 8 ALMA-detected sources (>=4.0 sigma, the sum of the probability of spurious source contamination is ~1) in a K-band source catalog. Four ALMA sources have K-band counterpart candidates within a 0.4" radius. Comparison between ALMA-detected and undetected K-band sources in the same observing fields shows that ALMA-detected sources tend to be b…
We present a catalog of 26 faint submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) in the XMM-LSS field identified by cross-matching serendipitously detected sources in archival ALMA Band 6 and 7 data with multi-band near-infrared (NIR) and optical data from the Spitzer Extragalactic Representative Volume Survey, the VISTA Deep Extragalactic Survey, the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Large Survey, and the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program. Of the 26 SMGs in our sample, 15 are identified here for the first time. The majority of the sources in our sample (16/26) have faint submm fluxes ($0.1\,{\rm m…
The rotational spectrum of the most stable conformer of ethylene glycol (HO(CH$_2$)$_2$OH) has been recorded between 360-890 GHz using a frequency-modulation sub-millimeter spectrometer. The refinement and extension of the spectroscopic parameters over previous efforts provides predicted catalog frequencies for ethylene glycol with sufficient accuracy for comparison to high-frequency astronomical data. The improvement in the cataloged line positions, and the need for improved accuracy enabled by high-frequency laboratory work, is demonstrated by an analysis of ethylene glycol emission at 890 G…
We present a catalogue of ALMA flux density measurements of 754 calibrators observed between August 2012 and September 2017, for a total of 16,263 observations in different bands and epochs. The flux densities were measured reprocessing the ALMA images generated in the framework of the ALMACAL project, with a new code developed by the Italian node of the European ALMA Regional Centre. A search in the online databases yielded redshift measurements for 589 sources ($\sim$78 per cent of the total). Almost all sources are flat-spectrum, based on their low-frequency spectral index, and have propert…
We present a method that derives the dust temperatures and infrared (IR) luminosities of high-redshift galaxies assuming radiation equilibrium in a simple dust and stellar distribution geometry. Using public data from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) archive, we studied dust temperatures assuming a clumpy interstellar medium (ISM) model for high-redshift galaxies, then tested the consistency of our results with those obtained using other methods. We find that a dust distribution model assuming a clumpiness of ${\rm log}\,ξ_{\rm clp}=-1.02\pm0.41$ may accurately represent…
We present the first results of a pilot program to conduct an ALMA Band 10 spectral line survey of the high-mass star-forming region NGC 6334I. The observations were taken in exceptional weather conditions (0.19 mm precipitable water) with typical system temperatures $T_{\rm{sys}}$ $<$950 K at $\sim$890 GHz. A bright, bipolar north-south outflow is seen in HDO and CS emission, driven by the embedded massive protostar MM1B. This has allowed, for the first time, a direct comparison of the thermal water in this outflow to the location of water maser emission from prior 22 GHz VLA observations. Th…
We present the results of ALMA observations of dust continuum emission and molecular rotational lines toward a dense core, MC27 (aka L1521F), which is considered to be very close to the first core phase. We revealed the spatial/velocity structures of the core are very complex and and suggest that the initial condition of star formation is highly dynamical.
One of the main considerations in the ALMA Development Roadmap for the future of operations beyond 2030 is to at least double its on-sky instantaneous bandwidth capabilities. Thanks to the technological innovations of the past two decades, we can now produce wider bandwidth receivers than were foreseen at the time of the original ALMA specifications. In several cases, the band edges set by technology at that time are also no longer relevant. In this memo, we look into the scientific advantages of beginning with Band 2 when implementing such wideband technologies. The Band 2 receiver system wil…
We report the detection of a distant star-forming galaxy, ALMA J010748.3-173028, which is identified by a 13-sigma emission line at 99.75 GHz (SdV = 3.1 Jy km/s), behind the nearby merging galaxies VV114 using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) Band 3. We also find an 880-um counterpart with ALMA Band 7 (S_880um = 11.2 mJy). A careful comparison of the intensities of the line and the continuum suggests that the line is a redshifted 12CO transition. A photometric redshift analysis using the infrared to radio data favors a CO redshift of z = 2.467, although z = 3.622 is acce…
We report detections of two 1.2 mm continuum sources ($S_\mathrm{1.2mm}$ ~ 0.6 mJy) without any counterparts in the deep $H$- and/or $K$-band image (i.e., $K$-band magnitude $\gtrsim$ 26 mag). These near-infrared-dark faint millimeter sources are uncovered by ASAGAO, a deep and wide-field ($\simeq$ 26 arcmin$^2$) Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) 1.2 mm survey. One has a red IRAC (3.6 and 4.5 $μ$m) counterpart, and the other has been independently detected at 850 and 870 $μ$m using SCUBA2 and ALMA Band 7, respectively. Their optical to radio spectral energy distributions indi…
In this {\it Letter}, we present sensitive millimeter SiO (J=5-4; $ν$=0) line observations of the outflow arising from the enigmatic object Orion Source I made with the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA). The observations reveal that at scales of a few thousand AU, the outflow has a marked "butterfly" morphology along a northeast-southwest axis. However, contrary to what is found in the SiO and H$_2$O maser observations at scales of tens of AU, the blueshifted radial velocities of the moving gas are found to the northwest, while the redshifted velocities are in the southeast. …
Wide, deep, blind continuum surveys at submillimetre/millimetre (submm/mm) wavelengths are required to provide a full inventory of the dusty, distant Universe. However, conducting such surveys to the necessary depth, with sub-arcsec angular resolution, is prohibitively time-consuming, even for the most advanced submm/mm telescopes. Here, we report the most recent results from the ALMACAL project, which exploits the 'free' calibration data from the Atacama Large Millimetre/submillimetre Array (ALMA) to map the lines of sight towards and beyond the ALMA calibrators. ALMACAL has now covered 1,001…
If the dark matter halos of galaxies contain large numbers of subhalos as predicted by the $Λ$CDM model, these subhalos are expected to appear in strong galaxy--galaxy lens systems as small--scale perturbations in individual images. We simulate observations of multiply--lensed sub--mm galaxies at $z\sim2$ as a probe of the dark matter halo of a lens galaxy at $z\sim0.5$. We present detection limits for dark substructures based on a visibility plane analysis of simulated Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) data in bands 7, 8 and 9. We explore two effects: local surface brightnes…
We present continuum images of the "Galactic Center Mini-spiral" of 100, 250, and 340 GHz bands with the analysis of the Cy.0 data acquired from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) archive. Pretty good UV coverage of the data and the "self-calibration" method give us an opportunity to obtain dynamic ranges of over 2x10^4 in the resultant maps of the 250 and 340 GHz bands. In particular the image of the 340 GHz band has high dynamic ranges unprecedented in sub-millimeter wave. The angular resolutions attain to 1.57"x1.33" in the 100 GHz band, 0.63"x0.53" in the 250 GHz band,…
We present preliminary results of the high resolution $ (0.10^{\prime\prime} \times 0.15^{\prime\prime}) $ observations of the high mass star forming region S255IR with ALMA in several spectral windows from ~ 335 GHz to ~ 350 GHz. The main target lines were C$^{34}$S(7-6), CH$_3$CN($19_K-18_K$), CO(3-2) and SiO(8-7), however many other lines of various molecules have been detected, too. We present sample spectra and maps, discuss briefly the source structure and kinematics. A new, never predicted methanol maser line has been discovered.
We report on Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) detections of molecular absorption lines in Bands 3, 6 and 7 toward four radio-loud quasars, which were observed as the bandpass and complex gain calibrators. The absorption systems, three of which are newly detected, are found to be Galactic origin. Moreover, HCO absorption lines toward two objects are detected, which almost doubles the number of HCO absorption samples in the Galactic diffuse medium. In addition, high HCO to H13CO+ column density ratios are found, suggesting that the interstellar media (ISM) observed toward the …
We discuss the science drivers for ALMA Band 2 which spans the frequency range from 67 to 90 GHz. The key science in this frequency range are the study of the deuterated molecules in cold, dense, quiescent gas and the study of redshifted emission from galaxies in CO and other species. However, Band 2 has a range of other applications which are also presented. The science enabled by a single receiver system which would combine ALMA Bands 2 and 3 covering the frequency range 67 to 116 GHz, as well as the possible doubling of the IF bandwidth of ALMA to 16 GHz, are also considered.
We present a new catalogue of ALMA observations of 3,364 bright, compact radio sources, mostly blazars, used as calibrators. These sources were observed between May 2011 and July 2018, for a total of 47,115 pointings in different bands and epochs. We have exploited the ALMA data to validate the photometry given in the new Planck Multi-frequency Catalogue of Non-thermal sources (PCNT), for which an external validation was not possible so far. We have also assessed the positional accuracy of Planck catalogues and the PCNT completeness limits, finding them to be consistent with those of the Secon…
We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) Cycle 3 observations of CO(2-1) emission from the circumnuclear disk in the E/S0 galaxy NGC 1332 at 0.044" resolution. The disk exhibits regular rotational kinematics and central high-velocity emission (+/-500 km/s) consistent with the presence of a compact central mass. We construct models for a thin, dynamically cold disk in the gravitational potential of the host galaxy and black hole, and fit the beam-smeared model line profiles directly to the ALMA data cube. Model fits successfully reproduce the disk kinematics out to r=200 p…
Unresolved gas and dust observations show a surprising diversity in the amount of interstellar matter in early-type galaxies. Using ALMA observations we resolve the ISM in z$\sim$0.05 early-type galaxies. From a large sample of early-type galaxies detected in the Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey (H-ATLAS) we selected five of the dustiest cases, with dust masses M$_d\sim$several$\times10^7$M$_\odot$, with the aim of mapping their submillimetre continuum and $^{12}$CO(2-1) line emission distributions. These observations reveal molecular gas disks. There is a lack of associated,…
We present a set of compelling science cases for the ALMA Band 1 receiver suite. For these cases, we assume in tandem the updated nominal Band 1 frequency range of 35-50 GHz with a likely extension up to 52 GHz; together these frequencies optimize the Band 1 science return. The scope of the science cases ranges from nearby stars to the re-ionization edge of the Universe. Two cases provide additional leverage on the present ALMA Level One Science Goals and are seen as particularly powerful motivations for building the Band 1 Receiver suite: (1) detailing the evolution of grains in protoplanetar…
We present results on the dust attenuation of galaxies at redshift $\sim3-6$ by studying the relationship between the UV spectral slope ($β_{\rm UV}$) and the infrared excess (IRX; $L_{\rm IR}$/$L_{\rm UV}$) using ALMA far-infrared continuum observations. Our study is based on a sample of 67 massive, star-forming galaxies with a median mass of $M_{\ast}\sim 10^{10.7}\,M_{\rm \odot}$ spanning a redshift range $z=2.6-3.7$ (median $z=3.2$) that were observed with ALMA at $λ_{rest}=300\,{\rm μm}$. Both the individual ALMA detections (41 sources) and stacks including all galaxies show the IRX-$β_{\…
Analyzing multiband observations of dust continuum emission is one of the useful tools to constrain dust properties which help us to understand the physical properties of the disks. We perform the synthetic ALMA multiband analysis to find the best ALMA band set for constraining the dust properties of the TW Hya protoplanetary disk. We find that the Band [10,6,3] set is the best set among the possible combinations of ALMA Band [3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10]. We also find two conditions for the good ALMA band sets providing narrow constraint ranges on dust properties; (1) Band 9 or 10 is included in the ban…
In this work we present new APEX/SEPIA Band-5 observations targeting the CO ($J=2\text{-}1$) emission line of 24 Herschel-detected galaxies at $z=0.1-0.2$. Combining this sample {with} our recent new Valparaíso ALMA Line Emission Survey (VALES), we investigate the star formation efficiencies (SFEs = SFR/$M_{\rm H_{2}}$) of galaxies at low redshift. We find the SFE of our sample bridges the gap between normal star-forming galaxies and Ultra-Luminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs), which are thought to be triggered by different star formation modes. Considering the $\rm SFE'$ as the SFR and the $L'_…
We describe the general structure of the well known S255IR high mass star forming region, as revealed by our recent ALMA observations. The data indicate a physical relation of the major clumps SMA1 and SMA2. The driving source of the extended high velocity well collimated bipolar outflow is not the most pronounced disk-like SMA1 clump harboring a 20 M$_\odot$ young star (S255 NIRS3), as it was assumed earlier. Apparently it is the less evolved SMA2 clump, which drives the outflow and contains a compact rotating structure (probably a disk). At the same time the SMA1 clump drives another outflow…
In this paper we study the properties of the six optically dark galaxies detected in the 69 arcmin^2 GOODS-ALMA 1.1mm continuum survey. While none of them are listed in the deepest H-band based CANDELS catalog in the GOODS-South field down to H=28.16AB, we were able to de-blend two of them from their bright neighbor and measure an $H$-band flux for them. We note that AGS4 and AGS15 have H=25.23, 27.11AB respectively. Their extreme proximity (0.50", 0.27") to a bright optical source and their extreme faintness prevented them from being included in the H-band catalog. We present the spectroscopi…
We aim to study equatorial disks in rotation and axial outflows in post-AGB objects, as to disclose the formation and shaping mechanisms in planetary nebulae. So far, both disks and outflows had not been observed simultaneously. We have obtained high-quality ALMA observations of 12CO and 13CO J=3-2 and 12CO J=6-5 line emission in the Red Rectangle, the only post-AGB/protoplanetary object in which a disk in rotation has been mapped up to date. These observations provide an unprecedented description of the complex structure of this source. Together with an equatorial disk in rotation, we find a …
Until recently, determining the rotational properties of galaxies in the early universe (z>4, Universe age <1.5Gyr) was impractical, with the exception of a few strongly lensed systems. Combining the high resolution and sensitivity of ALMA at (sub-) millimeter wavelengths with the typically high strength of the [CII] 158um emission line from galaxies and long-developed dynamical modeling tools raises the possibility of characterizing the gas dynamics in both extreme starburst galaxies and normal star forming disk galaxies at z~4-7. Using a procedure centered around GIPSY's ROTCUR task, we have…
Characterizing the galaxy population in the early Universe holds the key to understanding the evolution of these objects and the role they played in cosmic reionization. However, the number of observations at the very highest redshifts are to date, few. In order to shed light on the properties of galaxies in the high-redshift Universe and their interstellar media, we observe the Lyman-$α$ emitting galaxy z7\_GSD\_3811 at $z=7.664$ with band 6 and 8 at the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). We target the far-infrared [O III] 88 $μm$, [C II] 158 $μm$ emission lines and dust con…
The object of this study is one of the most energetic and luminous molecular outflows known in the Galaxy, G331.512-0.103. Observations with ALMA Band 7 (350 GHz; 0.86 mm) reveal a very compact, extremely young bipolar outflow and a more symmetric outflowing shocked shell surrounding a very small region of ionized gas. The velocities of the bipolar outflow are about 70 km s^{-1} on either side of the systemic velocity. The expansion velocity of the shocked shell is ~24 km s^{-1}, implying a crossing time of about 2000 yrs. Along the symmetry axis of the outflow, there is a velocity feature, wh…
We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) Cycle 5 and Cycle 6 observations of CO(2$-$1) and CO(3$-$2) emission at 0.2''$-$0.3'' resolution in two radio-bright, brightest group/cluster early-type galaxies, NGC 315 and NGC 4261. The data resolve CO emission that extends within their black hole (BH) spheres of influence ($r_\mathrm{g}$), tracing regular Keplerian rotation down to just tens of parsecs from the BHs. The projected molecular gas speeds in the highly inclined ($i>60^\circ$) disks rises at least 500 km s$^{-1}$ near their galaxy centers. We fit dynamical models of …
We present $\sim0.10^{\prime\prime}-$resolution Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) CO(2$-$1) imaging of the arcsecond-scale ($r \approx 150$ pc) dusty molecular disk in the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 3258. The data provide unprecedented resolution of cold gas disk kinematics within the dynamical sphere of influence of a supermassive black hole, revealing a quasi-Keplerian central increase in projected rotation speed rising from 280 km s$^{-1}$ at the disk's outer edge to $>400$ km s$^{-1}$ near the disk center. We construct dynamical models for the rotating disk and fit beam-…
We present a search for companion [CII] emitters to known luminous sources at $6<$ z $<6.5$ in deep, archival ALMA observations. The observations are deep enough to detect sources with L$_{\rm [CII]} \sim 10^8$ at z $\sim6$. We identify four robust line detections from a blind search of five deep fields centered on ultra-luminous infrared galaxies and QSOs, over an order of magnitude more than expected based on current observations and predictions, suggesting that these objects may be highly biased tracers of mass in the early Universe. We find these companion lines to have comparable properti…

We present new ALMA CO(2--1) observations of two well studied group-centered elliptical galaxies: NGC~4636 and NGC~5846. In addition, we include a revised analysis of Cycle 0 ALMA observations of the central galaxy in the NGC~5044 group that has been previously published. We find evidence that molecular gas, in the form of off-center orbiting clouds, is a common presence in bright group-centered galaxies (BGG). CO line widths are $\gtrsim 10$ times broader than Galactic molecular clouds, and using the reference Milky Way $X_{CO}$, the total molecular mass ranges from as low as $2.6\times 10^5 …
Recent ALMA observations have resolved the obscuring torus in the nearest Sy2 galaxy, NGC1068, in the millimeter band. These observations have confirmed the presence of a geometrically thick torus with an orbital motion of its matter and the velocity distribution which can reflect the clumpy structure. In the framework of N-body simulations we consider a dynamical model of an obscuring torus which accounts for the gravitational interaction between the clouds moving in the field of the central mass. In considered model, clouds are orbiting around the central mass exhibiting a spread in inclinat…
We present Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) observations of two high-redshift systems (SMMJ02399-0136 and the Cloverleaf QSO) in their rest-frame 122 micron continuum (~650 GHz or ~450 micron on-sky) and [NII] 122 micron line emission. The continuum observations with a synthesized beam of ~0.25" resolve both sources and recover the expected flux. The Cloverleaf is resolved into a partial Einstein ring, while the SMMJ02399-0136 is unambiguously separated into two components; an AGN associated point source and an extend region at the location of a previously identified dusty starburst. We d…
We have measured continuum flux densities of a high-mass protostar candidate, a radio source I in the Orion KL region (Orion Source I) using the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) at band 8 with an angular resolution of 0.1". The continuum emission at 430, 460, and 490 GHz associated with Source I shows an elongated structure along the northwest-southeast direction perpendicular to the so-called low-velocity bipolar outflow. The deconvolved size of the continuum source, 90 au times 20 au, is consistent with those reported previously at other millimeter/submillimeter wavelength…
The formation of stars is usually accompanied by the launching of protostellar outflows. Observations with the Atacama Large Millimetre/sub-millimetre Array (ALMA) will soon revolutionalise our understanding of the morphologies and kinematics of these objects. In this paper, we present synthetic ALMA observations of protostellar outflows based on numerical magnetohydrodynamic collapse simulations. We find significant velocity gradients in our outflow models and a very prominent helical structure within the outflows. We speculate that the disk wind found in the ALMA Science Verification Data of…
Disk polarization in (sub)millimeter dust continuum is a rapidly growing field in the ALMA era. It opens up the exciting possibility of detecting and characterizing magnetic fields and grain growth in disks around young stellar objects. However, to use polarization for probing the disk properties, its production mechanism must be ascertained first. To date, the conventional mechanism involving magnetically aligned grains fails to explain the polarization patterns detected in most disks. This is especially true for the inclined disk of HL Tau in ALMA Band 3 (wavelength $\sim 3$ mm), which has a…
The Wideband Sensitivity Upgrade (WSU) is the top priority initiative for the ALMA2030 Development Roadmap. The WSU will initially double, and eventually quadruple, ALMA's system bandwidth and will deliver improved sensitivity by upgrading the receivers, digital electronics and correlator. The WSU will afford significant improvements for every future ALMA observation, whether it is for continuum or spectral line science. The continuum imaging speed will increase by a factor of 3 for the 2x bandwidth upgrade, plus any gains from improved receiver temperatures. The spectral line imaging speed wi…
In order to study the initial conditions of planet formation, it is crucial to obtain spatially resolved multi-wavelength observations of the innermost region of protoplanetary discs. We evaluate the advantage of combining observations with MATISSE/VLTI and ALMA to constrain the radial and vertical structure of the dust in the innermost region of circumstellar discs in nearby star-forming regions. Based on a disc model with a parameterized dust density distribution, we apply 3D radiative-transfer simulations to obtain ideal intensity maps. These are used to derive the corresponding wavelength-…
Hydrogen recombination lines are one of the major diagnostics of H II region physical properties and kinematics. In the near future, the Expanded Very Large Array (EVLA) and the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) will allow observers to study recombination lines in the radio and sub-mm regime in unprecedented detail. In this paper, we study the properties of recombination lines, in particular at ALMA wavelengths. We find that such lines will lie in almost every wideband ALMA setup and that the line emission will be equally detectable in all bands. Furthermore, we present our implementation …
Interpreting the nature of starless cores has been a prominent goal in star formation for many years. In order to characterise the evolutionary stages of these objects, we perform synthetic observations of a numerical simulation of a turbulent molecular cloud. We find that nearly all cores that we detect are associated with filaments and eventually form protostars. We conclude that observed starless cores which appear Jeans unstable are only marginally larger than their respective Jeans masses (within a factor of 3). We note single dish observations such as those performed with the JCMT appear…
We present a possible identification strategy for first hydrostatic core (FHSC) candidates and make predictions of ALMA dust continuum emission maps from these objects. We analyze the results given by the different bands and array configurations and identify which combinations of the two represent our best chance of solving the fragmentation issue in these objects. If the magnetic field is playing a role, the emission pattern will show evidence of a pseudo-disk and even of a magnetically driven outflow, which pure hydrodynamical calculations cannot reproduce.
We present long-baseline ALMA observations of the strong gravitational lens H-ATLAS J090740.0-004200 (SDP.9), which consists of an elliptical galaxy at $z_{\mathrm{L}}=0.6129$ lensing a background submillimeter galaxy into two extended arcs. The data include Band 6 continuum observations, as well as CO $J$=6$-$5 molecular line observations, from which we measure an updated source redshift of $z_{\mathrm{S}}=1.5747$. The image morphology in the ALMA data is different from that of the HST data, indicating a spatial offset between the stellar, gas, and dust component of the source galaxy. We mode…

Compact substructure is expected to arise in a starless core as mass becomes concentrated in the central region likely to form a protostar. Additionally, multiple peaks may form if fragmentation occurs. We present ALMA Cycle 2 observations of 60 starless and protostellar cores in the Ophiuchus molecular cloud. We detect eight compact substructures which are >15 arcsec from the nearest Spitzer YSO. Only one of these has strong evidence for being truly starless after considering ancillary data, e.g., from Herschel and X-ray telescopes. An additional extended emission structure has tentative evid…
We present sensitive high angular resolution ($\sim$ 0.1$''$ -- 0.3$''$) continuum ALMA (The Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array) observations of the archetypal hot core located in Orion-KL. The observations were made in five different spectral bands (bands 3, 6, 7, 8, and 9) covering a very broad range of frequencies (149 -- 658 GHz). Apart of the well-know millimeter emitting objects located in this region (Orion Source I and BN), we report the first submillimeter detection of three compact continuum sources (ALMA 1-3) in the vicinities of the Orion-KL hot molecular core. These thre…
We present our analysis of the magnetic field structures from 6000 au to 100 au scales in the Class 0 protostar B335 inferred from our JCMT POL-2 observations and the ALMA archival polarimetric data. To interpret the observational results, we perform a series of (non-)ideal MHD simulations of the collapse of a rotating non-turbulent dense core, whose initial conditions are adopted to be the same as observed in B335, and generate synthetic polarization maps. The comparison of our JCMT and simulation results suggests that the magnetic field on a 6000 au scale in B335 is pinched and well aligned …
