The potentially realizable beam power at the Fermilab long-baseline neutrino program has motivated a reinvigorated design and optimization effort for a rapid-cycling synchrotron (RCS) intensity upgrade of the Fermilab proton complex. We examine areas of technological development with the potential for high-impact on the Fermilab RCS design - low-loss slip-stacking, advanced neutrino-target R\&D, laser-stripping H$^{-}$ injection, fast-ramping super-ferric magnets, nonlinear integrable optics, electron lens devices, and next-generation halo monitors. A brief overview is given on the Fermilab Accelerator Science \& Technology (FAST) facility, where the latter three technologies will undergo comprehensive beam tests.
During the proton-anti proton collider run several experiments were carried out in order to understand the effect of the beam-beam interaction on backgrounds and lifetimes. In this talk a selection of these experiments will be presented. From these experiments, the importance of relative beam sizes and tune ripple could be demonstrated.
A Super Proton-Proton Collider (SPPC) that aims to explore new physics beyond the standard model will be built in China. Here we focus on the impact of beam-beam interactions in the SPPC. Simulations show that with the current optics and nominal tunes, the dynamic aperture (DA) with all the beam-beam interactions is less than 6σ, the dominant cause being the long-range interactions. First, we show the results of a tune scan done to maximize the DA. Next, we discuss the compensation of the long-range interactions by increasing the crossing angle and also by using current carrying wires.
First computer experiment results on proton beam deflection by the crystal miscut surface are presented. The phenomenology of proton channeling and quasichanneling has been applied to describe new features of the beam deflection. The analysis predicts efficient beam deflection by the acute crystal end due to repelling miscut potential.
A number of particle physics experiments are being proposed as part of the Department of Energy HEP Intensity Frontier. Many of these experiments will utilize megawatt level proton beams onto targets to form secondary beams of muons, kaons and neutrinos. These experiments require transverse size measurements of the incident proton beam onto target for each beam spill. Because of the high power levels, most beam intercepting profiling techniques will not work at full beam intensity. The possibility of utilizing optical transition radiation (OTR) for high intensity proton beam profiling is discu…
The Fermilab Booster is being upgraded under the Proton Improvement Plan (PIP) to be capable of providing a proton flux of $2.25^{17}$ protons per hour. The intensity per cycle will remain at the present operational $4.3^{12}$ protons per pulse, however the Booster beam cycle rate is going to be increased from 7.5 Hz to 15 Hz. One of the biggest challenges is to maintain the present beam loss power while the doubling the beam flux. Under PIP, there has been a large effort in beam studies and simulations to better understand the mechanisms of the beam loss. The goal is to reduce it by half by c…
We are considering a two-beam accelerator (TBA) scheme with ion or proton beam as a driver. By comparison of the proposed scheme and the one with electron driver, we concluded, that TBA with ion/proton driver beam looks preferable. Existence of big proton accelerators in a few laboratories gives a boost for reconsideration of the baseline for post-LHC era. These Labs are FERMILAB, BNL, CERN and IHEP at Protvino, Moscow region. Protvino could emerge as one advantageous location and get stimulus for recovering the 600GeV-proton synchrotron in the existing~20km-long tunnel. This synchrotron was p…
The Supper Proton-Proton Collider is a next-generation hadron collider that is now being designed. A baseline design aims for a peak luminosity of about 1*10^35 cm^-2 s^-1. The focus of this article is the effect of beam-beam interactions which are expected to strongly influence stability in the beams. We start with a discussion of a scheme to generate the crossing angles at the interaction points while also correcting the dispersion thus created. The optics constraints on the achievable \b{eta}* were studied. Weak-strong simulations were performed to study single particle dynamics via tune fo…

Our collaboration has installed a laser-driven multi-MeV ion beamline at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum fuer Schwerionenforschung delivering intense proton bunches in the subnanosecond regime. We investigate possible applications for this beamline, especially in this report we focus on the ima…

The initial part of the accelerator consists of shielded spiral waveguides assembled in the common screen. The frequency of the acceleration: three hundred megahertz, high-frequency power twenty-five megawatts, the length of the accelerator six meters. After reaching the proton energy of six megaelektronvolts the protons using lenses with the azimuthal magnetic field are collected in one beam. Further beam acceleration is performed…
Crossing a horizontal nonlinear resonance is the approach that can be used to split a beam in several beamlets with the goal to perform multi-turn extraction from a circular particle accelerator. Such an approach has been successfully implemented in the CERN Proton Synchrotron and is used routinely for the production of high-intensity proton beams for fixed-target physics at the Super Proton Synchrotron. Recently, thanks to the deployment of diamond detectors, originally installed to monitor the beam losses at extraction, it has been possible to measure the horizontal beam emittance of the spl…
The use of Smith-Purcell radiation to measure electrons longitudinal profiles has been demonstrated at several facilities in the picosecond and sub-picosecond range. There is a strong interest for the development of non intercepting longitudinal profile diagnostics for high current proton beams. We present here results of simulations on the expected yield of longitudinal profile monitors using Smith-Purcell radiation for such proton beams.
Fermilab is developing a Proton Improvement Plan (PIP) to increase throughput of its proton source. The plan addresses hardware modifications to increase repetition rate and improve beam loss while ensuring viable operation of the proton source through 2025. The first phase of the PIP will enable the Fermilab proton source to deliver 1.8e17 protons per hour by mid-2013. As part of this initial upgrade, Fermilab plans to install a new front-end consisting of dual H- ion sources and a 201 MHz pulsed RFQ. This paper will present beam studies measurements of this new front-end and discuss new beam…
The new method to stabilize the beam energy of the KEK 40MeV proton linac, is developed now. In this method, the signal of the velocity monitor installed upstream the debuncher in the 40MeV beam line, is processed and then fed to the phase shifter of the debuncher rf system so as to cancel the fluctuation of the beam energy. In this article, the beam tests to prove the validity of this method and the system are described.
The design and parameters of the polarized-beam facility at U-70 proton synchrotron of NRC Kurchatov Institute - IHEP are presented. The new beamline 24A will provide the polarized proton and antiproton beams for carrying out the rich physics program of the SPASCHARM experiment for comprehensive studies of spin phenomena in a wide spectrum of hadronic reactions in the energy range of 10-45 GeV.
The KAHVE Laboratory, at Boğaziçi University, Istanbul, Turkey is home to an educational proton linac project. The proton beam will originate from a 20 keV H+ source and will be delivered to a two module Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) operating at 800 MHz via a low energy beam transport (LEBT) line. Currently, the design phase being over, commissioning and stability tests are ongoing for the proton beamline which is already produced and installed except the RFQ which is being manufactured. This work summarizes the design, production and test phases of the ion source and LEBT line components.
High intensity laser driven proton beams are at present receiving much attention. The reasons for this are many but high on the list is the potential to produce compact accelerators. However two of the limitations of this technology is that unlike conventional nuclear RF accelerators lasers produce diverging beams with an exponential energy distribution. A number of different approaches have been attempted to monochromise these beams but it has become obvious that magnetic spectrometer technology developed over many years by nuclear physicists to transport and focus proton beams could play an …
As the pre-injector of the LHC injector chain, the proton linac at CERN is required to provide a high-intensity (180mA) beam to the Proton Synchrotron Booster. The results of measurements at this intensity will be presented. Furthermore, the linac is now equipped with bunch shape monitors from INR, Moscow, which have allowed the comparison of the Alvarez tank RF settings with simulations.
Proton beams generated from laser acceleration show merit for their unique spatial (micron-size) and temporal (picosecond) properties, which make them desirable for many potential applications. However, the large energy spread and divergence angle make it difficult to maintain these beam properties after delivery. This hinders the wide application of laser acceleration. In this paper, we design a double achromatic beam translation system (DABTS), based on weak-focusing magnets, to realize achromatic transmission in both the horizontal and vertical directions, and compress the bunch length of t…
The LANSCE Isotope Production Facility (IPF) utilizes a 100-MeV proton beam with average power of 23 kW for isotope production in the fields of medicine, nuclear physics, national security, environmental science and industry. Typical tolerable fractional beam loss in the 100-MeV beamline is 4 x10-3. Experimental beam study was made to minimize the beam losses. Adjustments to the ion source extraction voltage resulted in the removal of tails in phase space. Beam based steering in beamlines led to the reduction of beam emittance growth. Readjustment of the 100-MeV quadrupole transport resulted i…
The paper presents a survey of the main numerical models used for simulation of interaction of accelerated particle beams with target nuclei. These models form the core of the software for simulation of various experiments and experimental facilities both for scientific and applied purposes. The beam and target parameters considered in detail in this study (protons and deuterons with energies from 0.66 to 4 AGeV and bulk U targets) cover the range of interest in development of new concepts of nuclear power production aided by accelerated particle beams.
We recently used an rf solenoid to study the widths of rf spin resonances with both unbunched and bunched beams of 2.1 GeV_c polarized protons stored in the COSY synchrotron. A map, with unbunched beam at different fixed rf-solenoid frequencies, showed a very shallow possible depolarization dip at the resonance. Next we made frequency sweeps of 400Hz, centered at similar frequencies, which greatly enhanced the dip. But, with a bunched proton beam, both the fixed-frequency and frequency-sweep techniques produced similar maps, and both bunched maps showed full beam depolarization over a wide reg…
Simulations have shown that a high energy, short and intense proton beam can drive a large amplitude plasma wave and accelerate an electron beam to the energy frontier in a single plasma channel. To verify this novel idea, a proof-of-principle demonstration experiment is now being planned. The idea is to use the available high energy proton beams either from the Proton Synchrotron (PS) or the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) at CERN, to shoot the beam into a plasma cell and to excite the plasma wakefield. A strong density modulation due to the excited plasma wakefield is produced for a long driv…
In a cyclotron-based proton therapy facility, the energy changes are performed by means of a degrader of variable thickness. The interaction of the proton beam with the degrader creates energy tails and increases the beam emittance. A precise model of the degraded beam properties is important not only to better understand the performance of a facility already in operation, but also to support the development of new proton therapy concepts. The exact knowledge of the degraded beam properties, in terms of energy spectrum and transverse phase space, depends on the model used to describe the proto…
Compared with conventional accelerators, laser plasma accelerators can generate high energy ions at a greatly reduced scale, due to their TV/m acceleration gradient. A compact laser plasma accelerator (CLAPA) has been built at the Institute of Heavy Ion Physics at Peking University. It will be used for applied research like biological irradiation, astrophysics simulations, etc. A beamline system with multiple quadrupoles and an analyzing magnet for laser-accelerated ions is proposed here. Since laser-accelerated ion beams have broad energy spectra and large angular divergence, the parameters (…
Electron cooling as a method of creating intense ion beams has a practical upper limit when it comes to the peak phase space density of ion beams which can be achieved in practice. We describe a new experiment to study electron cooling of 2.5 MeV protons at the intensity limit using the Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA), which is a storage ring dedicated to beam physics research at Fermilab. This system will enable the study of magnetized electron cooling of a proton beam with transverse incoherent tune shifts approaching -0.5 due to the presence of intense space-charge forces. We pres…
In this study, a low energy beam transport (LEBT) channel for the proton linac section of the Turkish Accelerator Center (TAC) has been designed by using TRAVEL code. Commonly used LEBT including two focusing solenoid magnets will transport and match the H- beam from a volume source to RFQ. In the beam dynamics simulations of such a LEBT line, 95% space-charge compensation (SCC) has been considered in this study. We aimed to find out the determination of our RFQ input parameters that gives the best possible beam quality at the entrance of the RFQ using beam collimator in the LEBT line as an al…
Calibration of the forward CMS hadron calorimeters in situ by the LHC beam is proposed. Simulations show that bent crystal channeling technique is feasible at the LHC, and report the experience of IHEP Protvino in bending 70 GeV protons by 9 degrees (150 mrad) during 10 years in 1994-2004 experiments. Practical realization of calibration scheme based on simulations and previous experience is proposed.
The 40-year-old Fermilab Proton Source machines, constituted by the Pre-Injector, Linac and the synchrotron Booster, have been the workhorse of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab). During this time, the High Energy Physics Program has demanded an increase in proton throughput, especially during the past decade with the beginning of the neutrino program at Fermilab. In order to achieve a successful program, major upgrades and changes were made in Booster. Once again, the Proton Source has been charged to double their beam throughput, while maintain the present residual activati…
We describe here a compact gantry system, when the lying patient is slowly moved in horizontal and vertical directions in accordance with rotation of transport channel around its axis so that the region, irradiated from different directions, stays in a focus of beam optical system. By this combination of rotation of magnets and linear motion of patient it becomes possible to simplify magnetic system significantly.
To compensate the large beam-beam tune spread and beam-beam resonance driving terms in the polarized proton operation in the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), we will introduce a low-energy DC electron beam into each ring to collide head-on with the opposing proton beam. The device to provide the electron beam is called an electron lens. In this article, using a 6-D weak-strong-beam-beam interaction simulation model, we investigate the effects of head-on beam-beam compensation with electron lenses on the proton beam dynamics in the RHIC 250 GeV polarized proton operation. This article is…
The Fermilab Proton Source machines, constituted by Pre-Injector, conventional Linac and Booster synchrotron, at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) had have a long history of successful beam operations. Built in late '60s, the Fermilab Proton Source began operations early in the '70s and since then it has successful provided protons to support the laboratory physics experiments. During the past decade, Booster performance reached unprecedented proton flux delivery of the order of 1.0-1.1E17 protons per hour, corresponding to 40 kW of beam power while maintained an allowed upper l…
The power of the proton beam of a high-power spallation neutron source generally ranges from 100 kW to several MW. The distribution of the power density of the beam on the target is critical for the stable operation of the high-power spallation target. This study proposes a beam monitoring method that involves restoring the image of a high-power proton beam spot on a target based on the principle of pinhole imaging by using the back-streaming of secondary neutrons from the spallation target. Fast and indirect imaging of the beam spot can be achieved at a distance of tens of meters from the tar…
Collimation with hollow electron beams is currently one of the most promising concepts for active halo control in the HL-LHC. In order to further increase the diffusion rates for a fast halo removal as e.g. desired before the squeeze, the electron lens (e-lens) can be operated in pulsed mode. In case of profile imperfections in the electron beam the pulsing of the e-lens induces noise on the proton beam which can, depending on the frequency content and strength, lead to emittance growth. In order to study the sensitivity to the pulsing pattern and the amplitude, a beam study (machine developme…
Using the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) linac as the injector, a 500 MeV proton synchrotron is proposed for multidisciplinary application, such as biology, material and proton therapy. The synchrotron will deliver proton beam with energy from 80 MeV to 500 MeV. A compact lattice design was worked out, and all the important beam dynamics issues were investigated. The 80 MeV H- beam is stripped and injected into the synchrotron by using multi-turn injection. In order to continuously extraction the proton with small beam loss, the achromatic structure is proposed and slow extraction meth…
We describe an external electron injection scheme for the AWAKE experiment. We use scattering in two foils, that are necessary as vacuum window and laser beam dump, to decrease the betatron function of the incoming electron beam for injection and matching into plasma wakefields driven by a self-modulated proton bunch. We show that, for a total aluminum foil thickness of $\sim 280\, μ$m, multiple Coulomb scattering increases the beam emittance by a factor of $\sim 10$ and decreases the betatron function by a factor of $\sim 3$. The plasma in the accelerator is created by a ionizing laser pulse,…
In this study, a low energy beam transport (LEBT) channel for the proton linac section of the Turkic Accelerator Complex (TAC) has been designed by using TRACE 2D and TRAVEL codes. The LEBT channel is located between an ion source and a radio frequency quadrupole (RFQ) structure. The aims of the design studies are perfect matching between input and output beams with two solenoid magnets, small emittance growth and sufficient space for beam diagnostics. Total length of such LEBT channel is about 1.3 m. The current of H- ion beam from ion source is 80 mA. In the beam dynamical simulations, we ha…
Intense laser-driven proton pulses, inherently broadband and highly divergent, pose a challenge to established beamline concepts on the path to application-adapted irradiation field formation, particularly for 3D. Here we experimentally show the successful implementation of a highly efficient (50% transmission) and tuneable dual pulsed solenoid setup to generate a homogeneous (8.5% uniformity laterally and in depth) volumetric dose distribution (cylindrical volume of 5 mm diameter and depth) at a single pulse dose of 0.7 Gy via multi-energy slice selection from the broad input spectrum. The ex…
Magnetically confined hollow electron beams for controlled halo removal in high-energy colliders such as the Tevatron or the LHC may extend traditional collimation systems beyond the intensity limits imposed by tolerable material damage. They may also improve collimation performance by suppressing loss spikes due to beam jitter and by increasing capture efficiency. A hollow electron gun was designed and built. Its performance and stability were measured at the Fermilab test stand. The gun will be installed in one of the existing Tevatron electron lenses for preliminary tests of the hollow-beam…
This report presents a design of a gantry for proton therapy based on the concept of adiabatic transition. The use of fixed-field alternating gradient magnets allows a large momentum acceptance and supports fast energy modulation. The optical performance of the gantry has been analysed using a beam tracking code. Several optimisations of the lattice and transition sections have been investigated to reduce size and ensure applicability to pencil beam scanning. Matching of the full energy range results in an increase in the size of the gantry, but reduces the weight and cost significantly compar…
In this paper we describe the methods and tools used to characterize a 150 MeV proton scaling Fixed Field Alternating Gradient (FFAG) accelerator at Kyoto University Research Reactor Institute. Many of the techniques used are unique to this class of machine and are thus of relevance to any future FFAG accelerator. For the first time we detail systematic studies undertaken to improve the beam quality of the FFAG. The control of beam quality in this manner is crucial to demonstrating high power operation of FFAG accelerators in future.
Proton beam window (PBW) is a boundary wall between a high vacuum area in the proton beam line and the helium atmosphere in a helium vessel at a high beam power target. The thermal and mechanical problems of the PBW have been studied in other spallation neutron sources; however, the scattering effect in PBW is seldom reported in literature but it may pose serious problems for the target design if not well treated. This paper will report the simulation studies of the scattering effect in PBW. Different materials and different structures of PBW are discussed. Taking CSNS as an example, a thin si…

The simulation result of 15MeV proton beam with an energy spread of 1%, current of 1x108 …
The bent crystals are applied on large accelerators to deflect particle beams in process of extraction and collimation. Recently the proposals of fixed target researches in the LHC are formulated. For realization of this program not only deflection but also focusing the LHC beam by bent crystals can be used. In the given work experimental results on 50 GeV proton beam focusing with the help of novel crystal device are reported. The positive property of this device is opportunity to work near the circulating beam of an accelerator, including the LHC.
This paper describes two distinct effects observed during the operation of the LHC in 2012: first, the impacts on beam parameter evolution of the end-of-squeeze instabilities encountered in the second half of the 2012 run; and, second, the very reproducible loss pattern of Beam 1 observed (while a similar pattern was negligible, if present at all, for Beam 2). Statistics for 2012 are provided and the impact on luminosity production is highlighted.
During the past decade, the interaction of high-intensity lasers with solid targets has attracted much interest, regarding its potential in accelerating charged particles. In spite of tremendous progress in laser-plasma based acceleration, it is still not clear which particle beam quality will be accessible within the upcoming multi petawatt (1 PW = 10$^{15}$ W) laser generation. Here, we show with simulations based on the coupled relativistic equations of motion that protons stemming from laser-plasma processes can be efficiently post-accelerated using crossed laser beams focused to spot radi…
Electron cloud interaction with high energy positive beam are believed responsible for various undesirable effects such as vacuum degradation, collective beam instability and even beam loss in high power proton circular accelerator. An important uncertainty in predicting electron cloud instability lies in the detail processes on the generation and accumulation of the electron cloud. The simulation on the build-up of electron cloud is necessary to further studies on beam instability caused by electron cloud. China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) is the largest scientific project in building, w…
We present the results of numerical simulations and experimental studies about the effects of resonant and random excitations on proton losses, emittances, and beam distributions in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In addition to shedding light on complex nonlinear effects, these studies are applied to the design of hollow electron lenses (HEL) for active beam halo control. In the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC), a considerable amount of energy will be stored in the beam tails. To control and clean the beam halo, the installation of two hollow electron lenses, one per beam, is b…
A comprehensive study on the effects of energetic protons on carbon-fiber composites and compounds under consideration for use as low-Z pion production targets in future high-power accelerators and low-impedance collimating elements for intercepting TeV-level protons at the Large Hadron Collider has been undertaken addressing two key areas, namely, thermal shock absorption and resistance to irradiation damage.
As part of the Intensity Frontier effort within the 2013 Community Summer Study, a workshop on the proton machine capabilities was held (High Intensity Secondary Beams Driven by Proton Beams) April 17-20, 2013 at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, NY. Primary aims of the workshop were to understand: 1) the beam requirements for proposed high intensity proton beam based measurements; 2) the capabilities of existing world-wide high power proton machines; 3) proton facility upgrade plans and proposals for new facilities; 4) and to document the R&D needs for proton accelerators and target sy…
A compact, remote controlled, cost efficient diagnostic station has been developed to measure the charge, the profile and the emittance for low energy proton beams. It has been installed and tested in the proton beam line of the Project Prometheus at SANAEM of the Turkish Atomic Energy Authority.
Proton beam therapy has been developed to irradiate the tumor with higher precision and dose conformity compared to conventional X-ray irradiation. The dose conformity of this treatment modality may be further improved if narrower proton beams are used. Still, this is limited by multiple Coulomb scattering of protons through tissue. The primary aim of this work was to develop techniques to produce narrow proton beams and investigate the resulting dose profiles. We introduced and assessed three different proton beam shaping techniques: 1) metal collimators (100/150~MeV), 2) focusing of conventi…
We investigate proton acceleration by a laser pulse obliquely incident on a double layer target via 3D PIC simulations. It is found that the proton beam energy spread changes by the laser irradiation position and it reaches a minimum at certain position. This provides a way to control the proton energy spectrum. We show that by appropriately adjusting the size and position of the second proton layer that high energy protons with much smaller energy spread can be obtained.
A method of generating spin polarized proton beams from a gas jet by using a multi-petawatt laser is put forward. With currently available techniques of producing pre-polarized monatomic gases from photodissociated hydrogen halide molecules and petawatt lasers, proton beams with energy ~ 50 MeV and ~ 80 % polarization are proved to be obtained. Two-stage acceleration and spin dynamics of protons are investigated theoretically and by means of fully self-consistent three dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. Our results predict the dependence of the beam polarization on the intensity of the …
Present availability of high brilliance photon beams as those produced by X-ray Free Electron Lasers in combination with intense TeV proton beams typical of the Large Hadron Collider makes it possible to conceive the generation of pion beams via photo-production in a highly relativistic Lorentz boosted frame: the main advantage is the low emittance attainable and a TeV-class energy for the generated pions, that may be an interesting option for the production of low emittance muon and neutrino beams. We will describe the kinematics of the two classes of dominant events, i.e. the pion photo-prod…
We have experimentally demonstrated the first non-intrusive 1-GeV proton beam extraction for the generation of muons with a temporal structure optimized for Muon Spin Relaxation/Rotation/Resonance (MuSR) applications. The proton pulses are extracted based on the laser neutralization of 1 GeV hydrogen ion (H-) beam in the high energy beam transport of the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) accelerator. The maximum flux of the extracted proton beam accounts for only 0.2% of the total proton beam used for neutron production, a marked difference from the 20% reduction at other co-located muon and neu…
