We investigate the relation between the time-ordered vacuum correlation functions for interacting real scalar fields in Minkowski spacetime and in the Rindler wedge. The correlation functions are constructed perturbatively within the in-in formalism, often employed in calculations in more general spacetimes. We prove to all orders in perturbation theory that the time-ordered vacuum correlation functions can be calculated in the in-in formalism with internal vertices restricted to any Rindler wedge containing the external points. This implies that the Minkowski in-in (or in-out) perturbative expansion of the vacuum correlation functions is reproduced by the Rindler in-in perturbative expansion of these correlators in a thermal state at the Unruh temperature.
A problem related to some Green functions found by Guimarães and Linet in the manifold of a straight cosmic string continued in the Rindler space is investigated.
We consider interacting massive scalar quantum field theory in the future Rindler wedge. This is a model example of quantum field theory in curved space--time. On this simple example we show how dynamics of correlation functions depends on the choice of initial Cauchy surface, basis of modes and on the choice of initial state build with the use of the corresponding creation and annihilation operators. We show which choice of modes in the future Rindler wedge respects Poincare symmetry. But we do not restrict our attention only to these modes and the corresponding state.
The Wightman functions in the Rindler portion of Minkowski space-time are presented for any value of the temperature and for massless spin fields up to s=1 and the renormalized stress tensor relative to Minkowski vacuum is discussed. A gauge ambiguity in the vector case is pointed out.
Photons and thermal photons are studied in the Rindler Wedge employing Feynman's gauge and canonical quantization. A Gupta-Bleuler-like formalism is explicitly implemented. Non thermal Wightman functions and related (Euclidean and Lorentzian) Green functions are explicitly calculated and their complex time analytic structure is analyzed using the Fulling-Ruijsenaars master function. The invariance of the advanced minus retarded fundamental solution is checked and a Ward identity discussed. It is suggested the KMS condition can be implemented to define thermal states also dealing with unphysica…
We derive the solutions of gravitational waves in the future (F) expanding and the past (P) shrinking Kanser spacetimes as well as in the left (L) and right (R) Rindler wedges in the Regge-Wheeler gauge. The solutions for all metric components are obtained in an analytic form in each region. We identify the master variables, which are equivalent to massless scalar fields, to describe the gravitational degrees of freedom for the odd parity and even parity modes under the transformation in the two-dimensional plane symmetric space. Then, the master variables are quantized, and we develop the qua…
Traditionally the physics of the Unruh effect, i.e. the q.f.t. in the wedges $W_R$ or $W_L$ in Minkowski space is related to the physics in the Rindler Fock space, which is a proplematical strategy. In a careful analysis we show that the correct dual q.f.t. lives rather in the thermal Rindler Hilbert space and turns out to be unitarily equivalent to the corresponding Minkowski space theory in contrast to the Rindler Fock space theory. We show in particular that in thermal Rindler Hilbert space a new sort of objects occurs, viz., quasi-particle/hole creation/annihilation operators of thermal Ri…
The thermal partition function of photons in any covariant gauge and gravitons in the harmonic gauge, propagating in a Rindler wedge, are computed using a local $ζ$-function regularization approach. The correct Planckian leading order temperature dependence $T^4$ is obtained in both cases. For the photons, the existence of a surface term giving a negative contribution to the entropy is confirmed, as earlier obtained by Kabat, but this term is shown to be gauge dependent in the four-dimensional case and, therefore is discarded. It is argued that similar terms could appear dealing with any integ…
Quantization of free string field theory in the Rindler space-time is studied by using the covariant formulation and taking the center-of-mass value of the Rindler string time-coordinate $η(σ)$ as the time variable for quantization. We construct the string Rindler modes which vanish in either of the Rindler wedges $\pm$ defined by the Minkowski center-of-mass coordinate of the string. We then evaluate the Bogoliubov coefficients between the Rindler string creation/annihilation operators and the Minkowski ones, and analyze the string thermalization. An approach to the construction of the string…
One of the striking features of QED is that charged particles create a coherent cloud of photons. The resultant coherent state vectors of photons generate a non-trivial representation of the localized algebra of observables that do not support a representation of the Lorentz group: Lorentz symmetry is spontaneously broken. We show in particular that Lorentz boost generators diverge in this representation, a result shown also in [1] (See also [2]). Localization of observables, for example in the Rindler wedge, uses Poincaré invariance in an essential way [3]. Hence in the presence of charged fi…
In this note, we explain how asymptotically globally AdS spacetimes can be given an alternate dual description as entangled states of a pair of hyperbolic space CFTs, which are associated with complementary Rindler wedges of the AdS geometry. The reduced density matrix encoding the state of the degrees of freedom in one of these CFTs describes the physics in a single wedge, which we can think of as the region of spacetime accessible to an accelerated observer in AdS. For pure AdS, this density matrix is thermal, and we argue that the microstates in this thermal ensemble correspond to spacetime…
We canonically quantize the Proca field in the Rindler wedge and compute the total response rate of a uniformly accelerated current interacting with massive vector Rindler particles from the Unruh thermal bath. We explicitly verify that the result obtained is exactly the same as the emission rate of massive vector particles in the Minkowski vacuum as analyzed by inertial observers. Eventually our results are interpreted in terms of the interaction of static electrons coupled to $Z^0$ bosons present in Hawking radiation close to the event horizon of a black hole.
We develop an alternative derivation of Unruh and Wald's seminal result that the absorption of a Rindler particle by a detector as described by uniformly accelerated observers corresponds to the emission of a Minkowski particle as described by inertial observers. Actually, we present it in an inverted version, namely, that the emission of a Minkowski particle corresponds in general to either the emission or the absorption of a Rindler particle.
We show that the emission of a Minkowski particle by a general class of scalar sources as described by inertial observers corresponds to either the emission or the absorption of a Rindler particle as described by uniformly accelerated observers. Our results are discussed in connection with the current controversy whether uniformly accelerated detectors radiate.
In this work we construct metrics corresponding to radiating black holes whose near horizon regions cannot be approximated by Rindler spacetime. We first construct infinite parameter coordinate transformations from Minkowski coordinates, such that an observer using these coordinates to describe spacetime events measures the Minkowski vacuum to be Planckian. Utilizing these results, we construct family of black holes that radiate at spatial infinity. As an illustration we study a subset of the black hole solutions that satisfy the null energy condition.
Thermal fluctuations for a massive scalar field in the Rindler wedge are obtained by applying the point-splitting procedure to the zero temperature Feynman propagator in a conical spacetime. Renormalization is implemented by removing the zero temperature contribution. It is shown that for a field of non vanishing mass the thermal fluctuations, when expressed in terms of the local temperature, do not have Minkowski form. As a by product, Minkowski vacuum fluctuations seen by an uniformly accelerated observer are determined and confronted with the literature.
QED in two-dimensional Minkowski space contains a single physical state as seen by an inertial observer or by a constantly accelerating Rindler observer. However in Feynman gauge if one takes a generic representative of the physical Minkowski state and traces over all left Rindler states, one does not arrive at a physical right Rindler state, but rather at a "density matrix" with negative eigenvalues for negative norm states corresponding intuitively to the radiation of uncorrelated temporal photons and ghosts. This reflects the fact that states that are exact under the Minkowski BRST operator…
We compute the entropy of a Rindler particle-detector (observer) in the presence of a quantum field in the Minkowski vacuum state; due to the Unruh effect, the observer is immersed in a thermal bath at a temperature proportional to its proper acceleration.
The Rindler horizon in Minkowski spacetime can be implanted with supertranslation hair by a matter shock wave without planar symmetry, and the hair is observable as a supertranslation memory on the Rindler family of uniformly linearly accelerated observers. We show that this classical memory is accompanied by a supertranslation quantum memory that modulates the entanglement between the opposing Rindler wedges in quantum field theory. A corresponding phenomenon across a black hole horizon may play a role in Hawking, Perry and Strominger's proposal for supertranslations to provide a solution to …
Gravitational perturbations of flat Minkowski space make the Rindler horizon dynamical: the horizon satisfies mechanical laws analogous to the ones followed by black holes. We describe the gravitational perturbation of Minkowski space using perturbative field-theoretical methods. The change in the area of the Rindler horizon is described in terms of the deflection of light rays by the gravitational field. The difference between the area of the perturbed and the unperturbed horizon is related to the energy of matter crossing the horizon. We derive consistency conditions for the validity of our …
The thermal Euclidean Green functions for Photons propagating in the Rindler wedge are computed employing an Euclidean approach within any covariant Feynman-like gauge. This is done by generalizing a formula which holds in the Minkowskian case. The coincidence of the found $(\be=2π)$-Green functions and the corresponding Minkowskian vacuum Green functions is discussed in relation to the remaining static gauge ambiguity already found in previous papers. Further generalizations to more complicated manifolds are discussed. Ward identities are verified in the general case.
We study the relations of the positive frequency mode functions of Dirac field in 4-dimensional Minkowski spacetime covered with Rindler and Kasner coordinates, and describe the explicit form of the Minkowski vacuum state with the quantum states in Kasner and Rindler regions, and analytically continue the solutions. As a result, we obtain the correspondence of the positive frequency mode functions in Kasner region and Rindler region in a unified manner which derives vacuum entanglement.
It is well known that the rotational motion does not induce Unruh effect, because the Minkowski vacuum coincides with the vacuum state defined by the pure rotating observers. However, are there Rindler particles carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM), and do they produce observable effect? To answer these questions, we need an accelerated observer having a vortex structure in the transverse dimensions and carrying well-defined OAM. Here we consider the angular momentum characteristics of Unruh effect in the theory of scalar field and electromagnetic field for the first time. We find that the …

The Klein-Gordon equation in the Rindler space-time is studied carefully. It is shown that the stable properties depend on using what time coordinate to define the initial time. If we use the Rindler time, the scalar field is stable. Alternatively, if we use the Minkowski time, the scalar field may be regarded unstable to some extent. Furthermore, the complete extension of the Rindler space time is the Minkowski space time, we could also study the stable problem of the Rindler space time by the Klein-Gordon equation completely in the Minkowski coordinates system. The results support that the R…
We combine the creation and annihilation operators of a scalar field in Minkowski spacetime to obtain the generators of the SU(1,1). We show that the transformation between Minkowski and Rindler vacua can be represented by (pseudo)rotation in the space of the SU(1,1) group. The root of this fact originates from the coordinate transformation between Minkowski and Rindler manifolds that can also be represented as a (pseudo)rotation in SU(1,1) group. The group structure reveals that an independent (pseudo)rotation in the group space must exist which leads to a new vacuum state, independent Rindle…
The worldline of a uniformly accelerated localized observer in Minkowski space is restricted in the Rindler wedge, where the observer can in principle arrange experiments repeatedly, and the Cauchy problem for quantum fields in that Rindler wedge can be well defined. However, the observer can still receive the signals sourced by the events behind the past horizon, and coordinatize those events in terms of some kind of observational coordinates. We construct such observational coordinates in some simple cases with the localized observers in Minkowski, de Sitter, and Schwarzschild-like spacetime…
It is well known that Minkowski vacuum appears as a thermal bath in the Rindler spacetime when the modes on the left wedge are traced out. We introduce the concept of a Rindler-Rindler spacetime, obtained by a further coordinate transformation from the Rindler spacetime, in a manner similar to the transformation from inertial to Rindler frame. We show that the Rindler vacuum appears as a thermal state in the Rindler-Rindler frame. Further, the spectrum of particles seen by the Rindler-Rindler observers in the original Minkowski vacuum state is shown to be identical to that seen by detector acc…
Tracing over the degrees of freedom inside (or outside) a sub-volume V of Minkowski space in a given quantum state |psi>, results in a statistical ensemble described by a density matrix rho. This enables one to relate quantum fluctuations in V when in the state |psi>, to statistical fluctuations in the ensemble described by rho. These fluctuations scale linearly with the surface area of V. If V is half of space, then rho is the density matrix of a canonical ensemble in Rindler space. This enables us to `derive' area scaling of thermodynamic quantities in Rindler space from area scaling of quan…
The dynamics of a probe particle or wrapped brane moving in the two-dimensional Rindler space can be described by a time-dependent tachyon field theory. Using knowledge of tachyon condensation, we learn that the infalling brane gets thermalised and produces open string pairs at the Hagedorn temperature when entering into the near-horizon Rindler wedge. It is shown that the Hagedorn temperature of the infalling brane is equal to the Hawking temperature of the host black hole detected in the same time coordinate. The infalling brane will decay completely into closed strings, mainly massive modes…
Quantum entanglement of the Minkowski vacuum state between left and right Rindler wedges generates thermal behavior in the right Rindler wedge, which is known as the Unruh effect. In this letter, we show that there is another consequence of this entanglement, namely entanglement-induced quantum radiation emanating from a uniformly accelerated object. We clarify why it is in agreement with our intuition that incoming and outgoing energy fluxes should cancel each other out in a thermalized state.
This is the first of a series of papers in which we use analyticity properties of quantum fields propagating on a spacetime to uncover a new multiverse geometry when the classical geometry has horizons and/or singularities. The nature and origin of the multiverse idea presented in this paper, that is shared by the fields in the standard model coupled to gravity, is different from other notions of a multiverse. Via analyticity we are able to establish definite relations among the universes. In this paper we illustrate these properties for the extended Rindler space, while black hole spacetime a…
We study the matching between the Hawking temperature of a large class of static D-dimensional black holes and the Unruh temperature of the corresponding higher dimensional Rindler spacetime. In order to accomplish this task we find the global embedding of the D-dimensional black holes into a higher dimensional Minkowskian spacetime, called the global embedding Minkowskian spacetime procedure (GEMS procedure). These global embedding transformations are important on their own, since they provide a powerful tool that simplifies the study of black hole physics by working instead, but equivalently…
We analyse the quantization procedure of the spinor field in the Rindler spacetime, showing the boundary conditions that should be imposed to the field, in order to have a well posed theory. Because of these boundary conditions we argue that this construction and the usual one in Minkowski spacetime are qualitatively different and can not be compared and consequently the conventional interpretation of the Unruh effect, that is the thermal nature of the Minkowski vacuum state from the point of view of an accelerated observer, is questionable. We also analyse in detail the Unruh quantization sch…
The Casimir energy is evaluated for massless scalar fields under Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions, and for the electromagnetic field with perfect conductor boundary conditions on one and two infinite parallel plates moving by uniform proper acceleration through the Fulling--Rindler vacuum in an arbitrary number of spacetime dimension. For the geometry of a single plate the both regions of the right Rindler wedge, (i) on the right (RR region) and (ii) on the left (RL region) of the plate are considered. The zeta function technique is used, in combination with contour integral representa…
In flat spacetime, two inequivalent vacuum states which arise rather naturally are the Rindler vacuum (R) and the Minkowski vacuum (M). We disuss several aspects of the Rindler vacuum, concentrating on the propagator and Schwinger (heat) kernel defined using R, both in the Lorentzian and Euclidean sectors. We start by exploring an intriguing result due to Candelas and Raine , viz., that $G_{R}$, the Feynman propagator corresponding to R, can be expressed as a curious integral transform of $G_{M}$, the Feynman propagator in M. We show that, this relation actually follows from the well known res…
It was shown recently that in four dimensions scalar sources with fixed proper acceleration minimally coupled to a massless Klein-Gordon field lead to the same responses when they are (i) uniformly accelerated in Minkowski spacetime (in the inertial vacuum) and (ii) static in the Schwarzschild spacetime (in the Unruh vacuum). Here we show that this equivalence is broken if the spacetime dimension is more than four.
A possible way to capture the effects of quantum gravity in spacetime at a mesoscopic scale, for relatively low energies, is through an energy dependent metric, such that particles with different energies probe different spacetimes. In this context, a clear connection between a geometrical approach and modifications of the special relativistic kinematics has been shown in the last few years. In this work, we focus on the geometrical interpretation of the relativistic deformed kinematics present in the framework of doubly special relativity, where a relativity principle is present. In this sett…
We consider 2d Maxwell system defined on the Rindler space with metric ds^2=\exp(2aξ)\cdot(dη^2-dξ^2) with the goal to study the dynamics of the ghosts. We find an extra contribution to the vacuum energy in comparison with Minkowski space time with metric ds^2= dt^2-dx^2. This extra contribution can be traced to the unphysical degrees of freedom (in Minkowski space). The technical reason for this effect to occur is the property of Bogolubov's coefficients which mix the positive and negative frequencies modes. The corresponding mixture can not be avoided because the projections to positive -fre…
The canonical quantization in Weyl gauge of gauge fields in static space-times is presented. With an appropriate definition of transverse and longitudinal components of gauge fields, the Gauss law constraint is resolved explicitly for scalar and spinor QED and a complete non-perturbative solution is given for the quantized Maxwell-field coupled to external currents. The formalism is applied in investigations of the electromagnetic field in Rindler spaces. The relation of creation and annihilation operators in Minkowski and Rindler spaces is established and initial value problems associated wit…

Using the holographic machinery built up in a previous work, we show that the hidden SL(2,R) symmetry of a scalar quantum field propagating in a Rindler spacetime admits an enlargement in terms of a unitary positive-energy representation of Virasoro algebra, with central charge c=1, defined in the Fock representation. The Virasoro algebra of operators gets a manifest geometrical meaning if referring to the holographically associated QFT on the horizon: It is nothing but a representation of the algebra of vector fields defined on the horizon equipped with a point at infinity. All that happens p…
We analyse the quantization procedure of the spinor field in the Rindler spacetime, showing the boundary conditions that should be imposed to the field, in order to have a well posed theory. We then investigate the relationship between this construction and the usual one in Minkowski spacetime. This leads to the concept of "Unruh effect", that is the thermal nature of the Minkowski vacuum state from the point of view of an accelerated observer. It is demostrated that the two constructions are qualitatively different and can not be compared and consequently the conventional interpretation of th…
