This paper presents an overview of recent results from the ATLAS Experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider, with a particular focus on those that are based on the entire Run 2 dataset of $\sqrt{s}$=13 TeV proton-proton collisions. These results include Standard Model measurements, updates on the Higgs Boson properties, as well as searches for high-mass resonances and supersymmetry.
An overview of the searches for heavy resonances that decay to leptons or quarks is presented. The results are based on the data collected by the ATLAS and CMS experiments in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13~\textrm{TeV}$, and include for the first time the entire LHC Run 2 data set.
The study of the top quark has a central role for both the ATLAS and CMS experiments. The measurement of the $t\bar{t}$ production differential cross section, in particular, is sensitive to existence of new resonances, it is a stringent test of perturbative QCD calculations and it is used to improve the modelling of $t\bar{t}$ production. ATLAS and CMS provided a large number of results during the last years at $\sqrt{s}$=7, 8, 13 TeV, in different regions of the phase space, considering different channels and topology and measuring the cross section as a function of the kinematic variables of…
Vector-like quarks (VLQ) that couple preferentially to third-generation Standard Model (SM) quarks are a well-motivated extension of the SM, which could solve in particular the hierarchy problem. While VLQs can be produced in pairs via the strong interaction at the LHC, the cross section for single production may be larger than the pair production cross section for VLQ masses above the current exclusion limits. An overview of the searches for the single production of VLQs at the ATLAS experiment that use data taken at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to up to 79.8 fb$^{-1}$, is…
With the absence of the direct detection of new physics and the large data set collected at the LHC, the search for indirect effects in precision measurements became popular. Effective field theories enable to interpret these effects that originate from physics manifested at currently unreachable energy scales in a model independent framework. In this report, an overview of new analyses performed by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations in the field of top quark physics is given.
For the High Luminosity upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider the current ATLAS Inner Detector will be replaced by an all-silicon Inner Tracker. The pixel detector will consist of five barrel layers and a number of rings, resulting in about 13 m^2 of instrumented area. Due to the huge non-ionising fluence (1e16 neq/cm^2) and ionising dose (5 MGy), the two innermost layers, instrumented with 3D pixel sensors and 100 um thin planar sensors, will be replaced after about five years of operation. Each pixel layer comprises hybrid detector modules that will be read out by novel ASICs, implemented in …
An overview is given of the results on charmonium production obtained by the ATLAS collaboration at the LHC. Recent preliminary measurements covering prompt and non-prompt production of $J/ψ$ and $ψ(2S)$ states in the range of high transverse momenta from 60 to 360~GeV are highlighted.
Recent results on top quark modelling and tuning are presented. In particular, the focus of this talk is on the studies on the definition and commissioning of the common Monte Carlo effort carried out by ATLAS and CMS within the LHCtopWG. An overview of current recommendations for modelling uncertainties is also presented.
An overview of the analyses that led to the observation of the Higgs boson production in association with a top quark pair ($t\bar t H$) with the ATLAS experiment is given. Up to 80 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) have been used to achieve this major milestone.
An overview of recent searches with top quarks in the final state using up to 36 fb$^{-1}$ of pp collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV collected with the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the LHC is presented. In particular, searches for heavy resonances decaying into third generation quarks, searches for production of vector-like quarks and searches for dark-matter produced in association with top quarks are summarised. No significant excess over the SM prediction is found and 95% CL exclusion limits are set in a variety of models.
This work gives an overview of the PCI-Express board $π$LUP, focusing on the motivation that led to its development, the technological choices adopted and its performance. The $π$LUP card was designed by INFN and University of Bologna as a readout interface candidate to be used after the Phase-II upgrade of the Pixel Detector of the ATLAS and CMS experiments at LHC. The same team in Bologna is also responsible for the design and commissioning of the ReadOut Driver (ROD) board - currently implemented in all the four layers of the ATLAS Pixel Detector (Insertable B-Layer, B-Layer, Layer-1 and La…
An overview of the recent searches for Higgs boson pair production at the LHC was presented. The searches were based on approximately 140 $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of data collected by the ATLAS and CMS experiments in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV. With respect to the previous searches, analysis techniques were significantly improved, and new signatures and decays channels were explored.
Recent results in soft QCD at LHC by the ATLAS, CMS and TOTEM Collaborations are presented. Special focus is reserved to studies in diffractive and forward physics, and to the underlying event, with comparison with previous results and highlighting novel techniques.
Recent measurements performed by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations on the Run 2 dataset are testing QCD with unprecedented precision. The wealth of data, an ever-improving experimental understanding of jets and photons, and novel measurements of jet substructure enable an improved understanding.
Theoretical predictions of top-quark cross sections depend on the values of the parameters of the quantum chromodynamics Lagrangian, such as the strong coupling constant and the mass of the top quark, but also on parameters of the electroweak sector of the standard model and parton distribution functions. Comparisons between state-of-the-art calculations and recent measurements at the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the CERN LHC allow for the precise determination of these parameters. In this proceeding, the most recent results by the two collaborations are summarized and discussed.
The ATLAS detector at the LHC is equipped with dedicated systems designed for the detection of forward protons produced in diffractive and photon-induced processes. These detectors significantly extend the ATLAS physics reach. Recent measurements performed using these forward proton detectors: elastic proton-proton scattering, exclusive charged pion-pair production, and two-photon production of lepton pairs are presented.
As the Higgs boson turns 10 this Summer, and the Large Hadron Collider experiments eagerly await the next round of data-taking, the ATLAS collaboration has recently reached important new insights into the Higgs mechanism. This report is a snapshot of Higgs highlights for the MoriondQCD conference, obtained with 139 ifb of Run2 proton-proton collision data taken at centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV.
