We present a theory of magnetic response in a finite-size two-dimensional superconductors with Rashba spin-orbit coupling. The interplay between the latter and an in-plane Zeeman field leads on the one hand to an out-of-plane spin polarization which accumulates at the edges of the sample over the superconducting coherence length, and on the other hand, to circulating supercurrents decaying away from the edge over a macroscopic scale. In a long finite stripe of width W both, the spin polarization and the currents, contribute to the total magnetic moment induced at the stripe ends. These two contributions scale with W and W2 respectively, such that for sufficiently large samples it can be detected by current magnetometry techniques.
Superconductivity, an emergence of a macroscopic quantum state, gives rise to unique electromagnetic responses leading to perfect shielding of magnetic field and zero electrical resistance. In this paper, we propose that superconductors with the space-inversion symmetry breaking host giant nonreciprocal optical phenomena, such as photocurrent generation and second harmonic generation. The nonreciprocal optical responses show divergent behaviors in the low-frequency regime and originate from two-fold indicators unique to parity-breaking superconductors, namely, the nonreciprocal superfluid dens…
Electromagnetic responses in superconductors provide valuable information on the pairing symmetry as well as physical quantities such as the superfluid density. However, at the superconducting gap energy scale, optical excitations of the Bogoliugov quasiparticles are forbidden in conventional Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer superconductors when momentum is conserved. Accordingly, far-infrared optical responses have been understood in the framework of a dirty-limit theory by Mattis and Bardeen for over 60 years. Here we show, by investigating the selection rules imposed by particle-hole symmetry and …
In contrast to elementary Majorana particles, emergent Majorana fermions (MFs) in condensed-matter systems may have electromagnetic multipoles. We developed a general theory of magnetic multipoles for surface helical MFs on time-reversal-invariant superconductors. The results show that the multipole response is governed by crystal symmetry, and that a one-to-one correspondence exists between the symmetry of Cooper pairs and the representation of magnetic multipoles under crystal symmetry. The latter property provides a way to identify nonconventional pairing symmetry via the magnetic response …
One of the goals of modern spectroscopy is to invent techniques which detect neutral excitations that have been theoretically proposed. For superconductors, two point transport measurements detect the Andreev crossed reflection which confirms the existence of the Majorana fermions. Similar information can be obtained from a measurement using two piezoelectric transducers. One transducer measures the stress tensor response from the strain field generated by the second transducer. The ratio between the stress response and strain velocity determines the dissipative response. We will show that the…
Majorana Kramers pairs emerged on surfaces of time-reversal-invariant topological crystalline superconductors show the Ising anisotropy to an applied magnetic field. We clarify that crystalline symmetry uniquely determines the direction of the Majorana Ising spin for given irreducible representations of pair potential, deriving constraints to topological invariants. Besides, necessary conditions for nontrivial topological invariants protected by the n-fold rotational symmetry are shown.
The unique nonreciprocal responses of superconductors, which stem from the Cooper pairs' quantum condensation, have been attracting attention. Recently, theories of the second-order nonlinear response in noncentrosymmetric superconductors were formulated based on the Bogoliubov-de Gennes theory. In this paper, we study the mechanism and condition for second-order optical responses of time-reversal symmetric superconductors. The numerical results show the characteristic photocurrent and second harmonic generation in the superconducting state. However, the superconductivity-induced nonlinear opt…
Within a Ginzburg-Landau formalism we establish analytically the necessary and sufficient conditions to realize a doubly degenerate superconducting ground state with broken time-reversal symmetry (BTRS) in a multi-band superconductor. Using these results we analyze the ground state of a three-band superconductor in the cylindrical geometry in an external magnetic field. We show that depending on the interband coupling constants, a magnetic flux can induce current density jumps in such superconducting geometries that are related to adiabatic or non-adiabatic transitions from BTRS to time-revers…
The thermal properties are one of the key parameters to control phase purity and microstructure of polycrystalline materials. The melting point of the iron-based BaFe2As2 superconductor (Ba122), which foresees high-field applications, remains controversial. In this work, thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry measurements (TG-DSC) of undoped and Co-doped Ba122 were carried out. Mixtures of elemental metals and pre-reacted Ba122 powders were prepared to investigate the thermal responses during in situ and ex situ synthesis routes, respectively. In addition, the phases and microstruc…
The parity breaking gives rise to rich superconducting properties through the admixture of even and odd-parity Cooper pairs. A new light has been shed on parity-breaking superconductors by recent observations of nonreciprocal responses such as the nonlinear optical responses and the superconducting diode effect. In this Letter, we demonstrate that the nonreciprocal responses are characterized by a unidirectional correction to the superfluid density, which we call nonreciprocal superfluid density. This correction leads to the nonreciprocal Meissner effect, namely, asymmetric screening of magnet…
We study optical responses of Leggett modes in multiband superconductors in the linear response regime. The Leggett mode is a collective mode unique to multiband superconductors that arises from relative phase fluctuations of superconducting orders for different bands. We use the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) description to study the collective modes in multiband systems. We find that multiband superconductors generally allow a linear coupling between the Leggett mode and external electric fields due to the presence of a cross term between different components of superconducting orders in the GL theory…
It has recently been proposed and experimentally demonstrated that it is possible to generate large thermoelectric effects in ferromagnet/superconductor structures due to a spin-dependent particle-hole asymmetry. Here, we theoretically show that quasiparticle tunneling between two spin-split superconductors enhances the thermoelectric response manyfold compared to when only one such superconductor is used, generating Seebeck coefficients ($\mathcal{S} > 1$ mV/K) and figures of merit ($ZT \simeq 40$) far exceeding the best bulk thermoelectric materials, and also becomes more resilient toward in…
Fully gapped two-dimensional superconductors coupled to dynamical electromagnetism are known to exhibit topological order. In this work, we develop a unified low-energy description for spin-singlet paired states by deriving topological Chern-Simons field theories for $s$-wave, $d+id$, and chiral higher even-wave superconductors. These theories capture the quantum statistics and fusion rules of Bogoliubov quasiparticles and vortices and incorporate global continuous symmetries - specifically, spin rotation and conservation of magnetic flux - present in all singlet superconductors. For all such …
