We calculate the AC linear response of a superconductor in a nonequilibrium electronic state. The nonequilibrium state is produced by injecting quasiparticles into the superconductor from normal leads through asymmetric tunnel contacts. The dissipative part of the response is drastically increased by the injected quasiparticles and is proportional to their total number regardless of the imbalance between the numbers of electron-like and hole-like excitations.
The quasiparticle lifetime and the related transport relaxation times are the fundamental quantities which must be known in order to obtain a description of the transport properties of the high T_c superconductors. Studies of these quantities have been undertaken previously for the d-wave, high T_c superconductors for the case of temperature-independent elastic impurity scattering. We analyze the proximity effect of superconductor/ferromagnet nanostructures and point out that the scattering of quasiparticle of spin-triplet pairs by local magnetic moments leads to large resistance peak slightly below the superconducting transition temperature of the superconductor. Both the temperature and the magnitude of the resistance peak decrease with increasing magnetic field, which agree quite well with the experimental results reported in [Nature Phys. 6, 389 (2010)].
Nonequilibrium properties of short-coherence-length s-wave superconductors are analyzed in the presence of extrinsic and intrinsic inhomogeneities. In general, the lowest-energy configurations of quasiparticle excitations are topological textures where quasiparticles segregate into antiphase domain walls between superconducting regions whose order-parameter phases differ by $π$. I investigate the difference between the quasiparticle properties in two dimensional(2D)and three dimensional(3D) s-wave superconductors. Using the original BCS model for the pairing interaction and direct Coulomb interaction I show that quasiparticle interactions lead to a stronger energy dependence in the single-particle self-energies in 2D than in 3D superconductors. This difference arises from the presence of the low lying collective mode of the order parameter in the 2D case which ensures that oscillator strength in the response function is at low frequencies, $\sim Δ$. Quasiparticle transport in the vortex state of an s-wave superconductor at T -> 0 was investigated by measuring the thermal conductivity of LuNi_2B_2C down to 70 mK in a magnetic field perpendicular to the heat current. In zero field, there is no electronic conduction, as expected for a superconducting gap without nodes. However, as soon as vortices enter the sample quasiparticles are seen to conduct remarkably well, even better than they would in a typical d-wave superconductor. The quasiparticle density of states (DOS) in the vortex state has been probed by specific heat measurements under magnetic fields (H) for clean and dirty s-wave superconductors, Y(Ni1-xPtx)2B2C and Nb1-xTaxSe2. We find that the quasiparticle DOS per vortex is appreciably H-dependent in the clean-limit superconductors, while it is H-independent in the dirty superconductors as expected from a conventional rigid normal electron core picture. We discuss possible origins for our observations in terms of the shrinking of the vortex core radius with increasing H.
We study the excitation spectra and the wave functions of quasiparticle bound states at a vortex and an edge in bilayer Rashba superconductors under a magnetic field. In particular, we focus on the quasiparticle states at the zero energy in the pair-density wave state in a topologically non-trivial phase. We numerically demonstrate that the quasiparticle wave functions with zero energy are localized at both the edge and the vortex core if the magnetic field exceed the critical value.
We develop a model for the effect of a magnetic field on quasiparticle interference in an iron-based superconductor. Recently, scanning tunneling experiments have been performed on Fe(Se,Te) to determine the relative sign of the superconducting gap from the magnetic-field dependence of quasiparticle scattering amplitudes. On the basis of the Bogolubov-de Gennes theory we develop an analytical description of low-energy extended quasiparticle states around an isolated flux line in a superconductor with gap nodes. The wavefunctions of these excitations and the corresponding density of states are shown to be strongly influenced by the interaction with a pure gauge potential due to the Aharonov-Bohm scenario.
We study theoretically the large variations of the supercurrent through a normal dot that are induced by a small quasiparticle injection current from normal leads connected to the dot. We find that the supercurrent decomposes into a subgap contribution, which depends on the voltages applied to the normal leads, as well as a contribution with opposite sign from energies outside the gap, which is insensitive to the voltages. As the voltages gradually suppress the subgap contribution, a critical voltage exists above which the contribution from energies outside the gap dominates, leading to a sign…
I calculate the effect of interactions among superconducting quasiparticles in two-dimensional(2D) a superconductor at T=0. The strength of the effective interaction among the quasiparticles is essentially given by the screened Coulomb interaction which has strength at low frequency because of the gapless nature of the plasmon. This is in contrast to three dimensions where the effective interaction has negligible weight at frequencies $\sim Δ$, the superconducting gap. Recently Deyo et al. [\prb {\bf 106}, 104502 (2022)] suggested that the surface resistance $R_s(H_0)$ of a superconductor under strong electromagnetic field can be affected by field-induced quasiparticle bound states at the surface. This Comment shows that the existence of such bound states and their contribution to $R_s$ are not substantiated and the phenomenological models of Ref. \cite{corn} give incorrect field and temperature dependencies of $R_s(T,H_0)$.
We calculate microscopically the viscous friction coefficient and the effective mass of domain walls separating regions of opposite chirality in p-wave superconductors with k_x\pm ik_y order parameter. The domain wall viscosity and inertia are determined by the transitions between different Bogoliubov quasiparticle states induced by the domain wall motion. As a by-product, we present a detailed analysis of the quasiparticle spectrum, both bound and scattering, in the presence of a general domain wall with an arbitrary phase difference between the domains.
Recent experiments indicate that the Bechgaard salts (TMTSF)$_2$ ClO$_4$ and (TMTSF)$_2$ PF$_6$ may be unconventional triplet superconductors. A Josephson tunnel junction transistor based on quasiparticle injection is proposed. Its operation relies on the manipulation of the electron distribution in one of the junction electrodes. This is accomplished by injecting quasiparticle current through the junction electrode by two additional tunnel coupled superconductors. Both large supercurrent enhancement and fast quenching can be achieved with respect to equilibrium by varying quasiparticle injection for proper temperature regimes and suitable superconductor combinations. We calculate the energy spectrum of quasiparticles trapped by a domain wall separating different time reversal symmetry-breaking ground states in a hexagonal superconductor, such as UPt$_3$. The bound state energy is found to be strongly dependent on the gap symmetry, the domain wall orientation, the quasiparticle's direction of semiclassical propagation, and the phase difference between the domains. We calculate the corresponding density of states and show how one can use its prominent features, in particular, the zero-energy singularity, to distinguish between different pairing symmetries.
Generalization of a disordered metal's theory has been proposed when scattering of quasiparticles by impurities is caused with a retarded interaction. It was shown that in this case Anderson's theorem was violated in the sense that embedding of the impurities in s-wave superconductor increases its critical temperature. The increasing depends on parameters of the metal, impurities and their concentration. At high magnetic fields and low temperatures, numerous extreme type-II superconductors exhibit Landau quantization of electronic motion. We present an analytic construction of the quasiparticle spectrum in this regime, based on the high-field expansion. The spectrum is gapless and is separated from the familiar low-field regime by a quantum level-crossing transition. Such low energy excitations should lead to observable effects in thermodynamics and transport.
At nonzero temperatures, superconductors contain excitations known as Bogoliubov quasiparticles. The mesoscopic dynamics of quasiparticles inform the design of quantum information processors, among other devices. Knowledge of these dynamics stems from experiments in which quasiparticles are injected in a controlled fashion, typically at energies comparable to the pairing energy . The quasiparticle energy spectrum of an isolated vortex in a clean layered d-wave superconductor is calculated. The Bogoliubov--de Gennes equations are solved perturbatively, within the model of step-variation of the gap function, adjusting the Caroli, de Gennes and Matricon approach for low-lying excitations in cuprates. A large peak in the density of states in a "pancake" vortex is found, as a consequence of two-dimensionality and strong coupling.
We report a study of the de Haas-van Alphen effect in the normal state of the ferromagnetic superconductor ZrZn2. Our results are generally consistent with an LMTO band structure calculation which predicts four exchange-split Fermi surface sheets. Quasiparticle effective masses are enhanced by a factor of about 4.9 implying a strong coupling to magnetic excitations or phonons. Our measurements provide insight in to the mechanism for superconductivity and unusual thermodynamic properties of ZrZn2.
The electronic spectrum of multi-vortex configurations in type-II superconductors is studied taking account of the effect of quasiparticle tunneling between the vortex cores. The tunneling is responsible for the formation of strongly coupled quasiparticle states for intervortex distances $a<a_c$, where the critical distance $a_c$ is of the order of several coherence lengths $ξ$. The renormalization of the electrons in cuprate superconductors is characterized by the kink in the quasiparticle dispersion. Here the bilayer coupling effect on the quasiparticle dispersion kink in the electron-doped bilayer cuprate superconductors is studied based on the kinetic-energy-driven superconductivity. It is shown that the kink in the quasiparticle dispersion is present all around the electron Fermi surface, as the quasiparticle dispersion kink in the single-layer case. We compare results of high-resolution magnetic flux (susceptibility) measurements in very weak magnetic field, performed of three classes of superconductors. They reveal astonishing details of the transition to the superconducting state. Although Pb behaves also on this scale according to BCS predictions, La is more reminiscent of HTS materials, which exhibit anomalous features. We suggest that known structure peculiarities are due to a strong electron-lattice instability and lead to a resonance electron back scattering.
We calculate the dependence of the interlayer quasiparticle conductivity, $σ_q$, in a Josephson coupled d-wave superconductor on the magnetic field B||c and the temperature T. We consider a clean superconductor with resonant impurity scattering and a dominant coherent interlayer tunneling. When pancake vortices in adjacent layers are weakly correlated at low T the conductivity increases sharply with B before reaching an extended region of slow linear growth, while at high T it initially decreases and then reaches the same linear regime. Quasiparticle interference in a d-wave superconductor with weak disorder produces distinctive peaks in the Fourier-transformed local density of states measured by scanning tunneling spectroscopy. We predict that amplitudes of these peaks can be enhanced or suppressed by applied magnetic field according to a very specific pattern governed by the symmetry of the superconducting order parameter. This calculated pattern agrees with the recent experimental measurement and suggests that the technique could be useful for probing the underlying normal state at high fields.
We present a calculation of the quasiparticle contribution to the longitudinal thermal conductivities as well as transverse (Hall) thermal conductivity of an extreme type-II superconductor in a high magnetic field and at low temperatures. In the limit of frequency and temperature approaching zero, both longitudinal and transverse conductivities upon entering the superconducting state undergo a reduction from their respective normal state values by the factor $(Γ/Δ)^2$, which measures the size of the region at the Fermi surface containing gapless quasiparticle excitations. Quasiparticle recombination in a superconductor with an s-wave gap is typically dominated by a phonon bottleneck effect. We have studied how a magnetic field changes this recombination process in metallic thin-film superconductors, finding that the quasiparticle recombination process is significantly slowed as the field increases. While we observe this for all field orientations, we focus here on the results for a field applied parallel to the thin film surface, minimizing the influence of vortices. We report detailed transport studies on ferromagnet-superconductor heterostructures. Epitaxial heterostructures of half-metal colossal magnetoresistive La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 (HM-CMR) and high Tc superconducting YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO) are grown on SrTiO3 (100) single crystal substrates by pulsed laser deposition. Using the HM--CMR layer as source for spin-polarized quasiparticles, we show the effect of injection of spin-polarized quasiparticles into the ab-plane and along the c-axis of YBCO. Low-energy quasiparticle states, arising from scattering by single-particle potentials in d-wave superconductors, are addressed. Via a natural extension of the Andreev approximation, the idea that sign-variations in the superconducting pair-potential lead to such states is extended beyond its original setting of boundary scattering to the broader context of scattering by general single-particle potentials, such as those due to impurities. The index-theoretic origin of these states is exhibited via a simple connection with Witten's supersymmetric quantum-mechanical model.
We calculate the magnetic field and temperature dependence of the Raman response, superfluid density and the NMR relaxation rate in the vortex state of a d-wave superconductor arising from the Doppler energy shift of extended quasiparticle states. Our results are valid both at low temperatures, where we observe scaling with variable $TH^{-1/2}$ and obtain explicit form of the scaling functions, and beyond this region. We derive a universal frequency dependent scaling relation for the Raman response, and discuss the breakdown of the single relaxation rate approach to NMR response.
We study the low temperature behavior of an amorphous superconducting film driven normal by a perpendicular magnetic field (B). For this purpose we introduce a new two-fluid formulation consisting of fermionized field induced vortices and electrically neutralized Bogoliubov quasiparticles (spinons) interacting via a long-ranged statistical interaction. We consider the problem of the vortex contribution to thermal properties of dirty d-wave superconductors. In the clean limit, Volovik has argued that the main contribution to the density of states in a d-wave superconductor arises from extended quasiparticle states which may be treated semiclassically, giving rise to a specific heat contribution δC(H)\ltsim H^{1/2} . We show that the extended states continue to dominate the dirty limit, but lead to a H \log H behavior at the lowest fields, H_{c1}\ll H\ll H_{c2}. The energy, momentum and temperature dependence of the quasiparticle local density of states (LDOS) of a two-dimensional $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave superconductor with random disorder is investigated using the first-order T-matrix approximation. The results suggest that collective modes such as spin/charge density waves are relevant low-energy excitations of the cuprates that contribute to the observed LDOS modulations in recent scanning tunneling microscopy studies of $\rm Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_x$.
We show that gapless superconductivity of a strongly type-II superconductor in a high magnetic field prevails in the presence of disorder, suggesting a topological nature. We calculate the density of states of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes quasiparticles for a two-dimensional inhomogeneous system in both cases of weak and strong disorder. In the limit of very weak disorder, the effect is very small and the density of states is not appreciably changed. When quasiparticles in a BCS superconductor recombine into Cooper pairs, phonons are emitted within a narrow band of energies above the pairing energy at 2$Δ$. We show that a phonon bandgap restricting the escape of recombination phonons from a superconductor can increase the quasiparticle recombination lifetime by more than an order of magnitude. A phonon bandgap can be realized and matched to the recombination energy with a phononic crystal, a periodically-patterned dielectric membrane. Topological superconductors, such as noncentrosymmetric superconductors with strong spin-orbit coupling, exhibit protected zero-energy surface states, which possess an intricate helical spin structure. Charge doping of iron-pnictide superconductors leads to collective pinning of flux vortices, whereas isovalent doping does not. Moreover, flux pinning in the charge-doped compounds is consistently described by the mean-free path fluctuations introduced by the dopant atoms, allowing for the extraction of the elastic quasiparticle scattering rate. The absence of scattering by dopant atoms in isovalently doped BaFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$ is consistent with the observation of a linear temperature dependence of the low-temperature penetration depth in this material.
We study how quasiparticle interactions affect their localization properties in dirty superconductors with broken time reversal symmetry -- for example in a magnetic field. For SU(2) spin-rotation invariant (class C) systems, the only important coupling is the spin-spin triplet interaction, which we study within a renormalization group approach. Either an additional Zeeman coupling or a complete breaking of spin rotation symmetry renders all interactions irrelevant. The quasiparticle interference (QPI) patterns in BiS$_{2}$-based superconductors are theoretically investigated by taking into account the spin-orbital coupling and assuming the recently proposed $d^{*}_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$-wave pairing symmetry. We found two distinct scattering wave vectors whose evolution can be explained based on the evolution of the constant-energy contours. The QPI spectra presented in this paper can thus be compared with future scanning tunneling microscopy experiments to test whether the pairing symmetry is $d^{*}_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$-wave in BiS$_{2}$-based superconductors.
The consequences of localized, classical magnetic moments in superconductors are explored and their effect on the spectral properties of the intragap bound states is studied. Above a critical moment, a localized quasiparticle excitation in an s-wave superconductor is spontaneously created near a magnetic impurity, inducing a zero-temperature quantum transition. In this transition, the spin quantum number of the ground state changes from zero to 1/2, while the total charge remains the same. We investigate the temperature dependence of quasiparticle interference in the high $T_c$-cuprates using an Exact-Diagonalization + Monte-Carlo based scheme to simulate the $d$-wave superconducting order parameter. The quasiparticle interference patterns have features largely resulting from the scattering vectors of the octet model at lower temperature. We study the momentum-integrated quasiparticle interference (QPI) in the FeSe-based superconductors. This method was recently proposed theoretically and has been applied to determine the pairing symmetry in these materials experimentally. Our findings suggest that, if the incipient bands and the superconducting (SC) pairing on them are taken into consideration, then the experimentally measured bound states and momentum-integrated QPI can be well fitted, even if the SC order parameter does not change sign on the Fermi surfaces. The Kondo effects of an Anderson impurity embedded into a d-wave superconductor is studied. Within the slave-boson mean-field approach, the derived Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations are solved via exact diagonalization. We consider a model NISIN system with two junctions in series, where N is a normal metal, S is a superconductor and I is an insulator. We assume that the resistance of the first junction is high, while the resistance of the second one is low. In this case the first junction cools the left normal electrode, while the second junction partially removes excited quasiparticles from the superconductor. We consider cooling properties of this double junction structure. It is shown that the cooling power depends strongly on the ratio of the resistances of the two junctions. We study quasiparticles of d-wave superconductors in the vortex lattice by self-consistently solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. We theoretically study the dependence of the quasiparticle (QP) scattering rate $\varGamma$ on the uniaxial anisotropy of a Fermi surface with changing the magnetic field angle $α_{\rm M}$. We consider the QP scattering due to the non-magnetic impurities inside a single vortex core. The field-angle dependence of the quasiparticle scattering rate $\varGamma(α_{\rm M})$ is sensitive to the sign-change of the pair potential. We show that with increasing the two dimensionality of the system, $\varGamma(α_{\rm M})$ reflects more clearly whether there is the sign-change in the pair potential.

Unusual peak-dip-hump features, previously reported in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$, are also found in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$. To analyse these common signatures we propose a new heuristic model in which, in addition to the d-wave symmetry, the gap function is energy dependent. Using a simple model for the frequency dependent scattering rate, we evaluate the in-plane optical integral for cuprate superconductors in the normal and superconducting states. In the overdoped region, this integral is conserved. In the optimal and underdoped region, though, the optical integrals differ, implying a lowering of the in-plane kinetic energy in the superconducting state. This sum rule violation, due to the difference of the non Fermi liquid normal state and the superconducting Fermi liquid state, has a magnitude comparable to recent experimental results.
The recent findings about two distinct quasiparticle inelastic scattering rates in angle-dependent magnetoresistance (ADMR) experiments in overdoped high-$T_c$ cuprates superconductors have motivated many discussions related to the link between superconductivity, pseudogap, and transport properties in these materials. We study several aspects of the structure of vortices in conventional s-wave Type $II$ superconductors. It is well-known that there are low energy quasiparticles bound to the core of a vortex. We show that under certain conditions, these quasiparticles form a degenerate Fermi gas with a finite density of states at the Fermi energy. In three dimensional superconductors, the result is a one dimensional Fermi gas of quasiparticles bound to the core of a vortex line. Nodal quasiparticles of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 have been studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with high momentum and energy resolution. Low-energy tunable photons have enabled us to resolve a small nodal bilayer splitting, unmasking the intrinsic single-particle scattering rate. The nodal scattering rate is abruptly suppressed upon the superconducting transition, and shows a linear energy dependence at low energies, indicating the nontrivial effect of elastic scatterings on the quasiparticles.
