There is a growing interest of using the intrinsic alignment (IA) of galaxy images as a tool to extract cosmological information complimentary to galaxy clustering analysis. Recently, Okumura & Taruya derived useful formulas for the intrinsic ellipticity--ellipticity correlation, the gravitational shear--intrinsic ellipticity correlation, and the velocity--intrinsic ellipticity correlation functions based on the linear alignment (LA) model. In this paper, using large-volume $N$-body simulations, we measure these alignment statistics in real and redshift space and compare them to the LA and nonlinear alignment model predictions. We find that anisotropic features of baryon acoustic oscillations in the IA statistics can be accurately predicted by our models. The anisotropy due to redshift-space distortions (RSDs) is also well described in the large-scale limit. Our results indicate that one can extract the cosmological information encoded in the IA through the Alcock-Paczynski and RSD effects.
Intrinsic alignments of galaxies are recognised as one of the most important systematic in weak lensing surveys on small angular scales. In this paper we investigate ellipticity correlation functions that are measured separately on elliptical and spiral galaxies, for which we assume the generic alignment mechanisms based on tidal shearing and tidal torquing, respectively. Including morphological information allows to find linear combinations of measured ellipticity correlation functions which suppress the gravitational lensing signal completely or which show a strongly boosted gravitational le…
We examined the anisotropic point spread function (PSF) of Suprime-Cam data utilizing dense star field data. We decomposed the PSF ellipticities into three components, the optical aberration, atmospheric turbulence, and chip-misalignment in an empirical manner, and evaluated the amplitude of each component. We found that, for long-exposure data, the optical aberration has the largest contribution to the PSF ellipticities, which could be modeled well by a simple analytic function based on the lowest-order aberration theory. The statistical properties of PSF ellipticities resulting from the atmo…
Weak gravitational lensing has become a powerful probe of large-scale structure and cosmological parameters. Precision weak lensing measurements require an understanding of the intrinsic alignment of galaxy ellipticities, which can in turn inform models of galaxy formation. It is hypothesized that elliptical galaxies align with the background tidal field and that this alignment mechanism dominates the correlation between ellipticities on cosmological scales (in the absence of lensing). We use recent large-scale structure measurements from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to test this picture with …
Correlations of galaxy ellipticities with large-scale structure, due to galactic tidal interactions, provide a potentially significant contaminant to measurements of cosmic shear. However, these intrinsic alignments are still poorly understood for galaxies at the redshifts typically used in cosmic shear analyses. For spiral galaxies, it is thought that tidal torquing is significant in determining alignments resulting in zero correlation between the intrinsic ellipticity and the gravitational potential in linear theory. Here, we calculate the leading-order correction to this result in the tidal…
Investigating intrinsic alignments (IAs) of galaxy shapes is important not only to constrain cosmological parameters unbiasedly from gravitational lensing but also to extract cosmological information complimentary to galaxy clustering analysis. We derive simple and useful formulas for the various IA statistics, including the intrinsic ellipticity--ellipticity correlation, the gravitational shear--intrinsic ellipticity correlation, and the velocity-intrinsic ellipticity correlation functions. The angular dependence of each statistic is explicitly given, namely the angle between the line-of-sigh…
Galaxies on the largest scales of the Universe are observed to be embedded in the filamentary cosmic web which is shaped by the nonlinear tidal field. As an efficient tool to quantitatively describe the statistics of this cosmic web, we present the anisotropic two-point correlation functions of the nonlinear traceless tidal field in the principal-axis frame, which are measured using numerical data from an N-body simulation. We show that both of the nonlinear density and traceless tidal fields are more strongly correlated along the directions perpendicular to the eigenvectors associated with th…
We present anisotropic "separate universe" simulations which modify the N-body code Gadget-4 in order to represent a large-scale tidal field through an anisotropic expansion factor. These simulations are used to measure the linear, quasi-linear and nonlinear response of the matter power spectrum to a spatially uniform trace-free tidal field up to wavenumber $k = 7 h \text{Mpc}^{-1}$. Together with the response to a large-scale overdensity measured in previous work, this completely describes the nonlinear matter bispectrum in the squeezed limit. We find that the response amplitude does not appr…
Correlations between intrinsic galaxy shapes on large-scales arise due to the effect of the tidal field of the large-scale structure. Anisotropic primordial non-Gaussianity induces a distinct scale-dependent imprint in these tidal alignments on large scales. Motivated by the observational finding that the alignment strength of luminous red galaxies depends on how galaxy shapes are measured, we study the use of two different shape estimators as a multi-tracer probe of intrinsic alignments. We show, by means of a Fisher analysis, that this technique promises a significant improvement on anisotro…
In this paper we carry out anisotropic "separate universe" simulations by including a large-scale tidal field in the N-body code \textsc{gadget}4 using an anisotropic expansion factor $A_{ij}$. We use the code in a pure \textit{particle-mesh} (PM) mode to simulate the evolution of 16 realizations of an initial density field with and without a large-scale tidal field, which are then used to measure the \textit{response function} describing how the tidal field influences structure formation in the linear and non-linear regimes. Together with the previously measured response to a large scale over…
We seek to differentiate dynamical and morphological attributes between globular clusters (GCs) that were formed inside their own dark matter (DM) mini-halo, and those who were not. We employ high resolution full N-body simulations on GPU of GCs with and without a DM mini-halo, orbiting a Fornax-like dwarf galaxy. For GCs with DM, we observe that this dark extra mass triggers a tidal radius growth that allows the mini-halo to act as a protective shield against tidal stripping, being itself stripped beforehand the stars. We demonstrate that this shielding effect becomes negligible when the tida…
To generate initial conditions for cosmological $N$-body simulations, one needs to prepare a uniform distribution of simulation particles, so-called the pre-initial condition (pre-IC). The standard method to construct the pre-IC is to place the particles on the lattice grids evenly spaced in the three-dimensional spatial coordinates. However, even after the initial displacement of each particle according to cosmological perturbations, the particle distribution remains to display an artificial anisotropy. Such an artifact causes systematic effects in simulations at later time until the evolved …
The halo spin-spin correlation function, $η(r)$, measures how rapidly the strength of the alignments of the spin directions between the neighbor halos change with the separation distance, $r$. The previous model based on the tidal torque theory expresses the halo spin-spin correlation function as a power of the linear density two-point correlation function, $η(r)\propto ξ^{n}(r)$, predicting $n=2$ in the linear regime and $n=1$ in the non-linear regime. Using a high-resolution N-body simulation, we show that the halo spin-spin correlation function in fact drops much less rapidly with $r$ than …
The gravitational coupling between large- and small-scale density perturbations leads to anisotropic distortions to the local small-scale matter fluctuations. Such local anisotropic distortions can be used to reconstruct the large-scale matter distribution, known as tidal reconstruction. In this paper, we apply the tidal reconstruction methods to simulated galaxies in redshift space. We find that redshift-space distortions lead to anisotropic reconstruction results. While the reconstructed radial modes are more noisy mainly due to the small-scale velocity dispersion, the transverse modes are s…
The long-wavelength coherent overdensity and tidal force, which are not direct observables for a finite-volume survey, affect time evolution of cosmic structure formation and therefore clustering observables through the mode coupling. In this paper we develop an "anisotropic" separate universe (SU) simulation technique to simulate large-scale structure formation taking into account the effect of large-scale tidal force into the anisotropic expansion of local background. We modify the TreePM N-body simulation code to implement the anisotropic SU simulations, and then study the "response" functi…
Intrinsically aligned galaxy shapes are one of the most important systematics in cosmic shear measurements. So far theoretical studies of intrinsic alignments almost exclusively focus on their statistics at the two-point level. Results from numerical simulations, however, suggest that third-order measures might be even stronger affected. We therefore investigate the (angular) bispectrum of intrinsic alignments. In our fully analytical study we describe intrinsic galaxy ellipticities by a physical alignment model, which makes use of tidal torque theory. We derive expressions for the various com…
The intrinsic alignment of galaxy shapes (by means of their angular momentum) and their cross-correlation with the surrounding dark matter tidal field are investigated using the 160 000, z=1.2 synthetic galaxies extracted from the high-resolution cosmological hydrodynamical simulation Horizon-AGN. One- and two-point statistics of the spin of the stellar component are measured as a function of mass and colour. For the low-mass galaxies, this spin is locally aligned with the tidal field `filamentary' direction while, for the high-mass galaxies, it is perpendicular to both filaments and walls. Th…
We quantify to what extent tidal erosion of globular clusters (GCs) has contributed to the observed u-shaped relation between GC specific frequencies S_N and host galaxy luminosity M_V. We used our MUESLI code to calculate GC survival rates for typical early-type galaxy potentials covering a wide range of observed galaxy properties. We do this for isotropic and radially anisotropic GC velocity distributions. We find that the calculated GC survival fraction, f_s, depends linearly on the logarithm of the 3D mass density, rho_3D, within the galaxy's half light radius, with f_s proportional to (rh…
We investigate impacts of long-wavelength gravitational waves (GWs) on nonlinear structure formation by utilizing the tidal separate universe simulations. Based on the equivalence of a long-wavelength GW to a uniform tidal field in a local frame, we provide a way to incorporate a long-wavelength GW into the tidal separate universe simulation as an effective anisotropic expansion. This methodology enables us to study effects of GWs on large-scale structure efficiently. We measure the anisotropic imprint in the local power spectrum from the tidal separate universe simulations with GWs, which cor…
We study the effect of large-scale tidal fields on internal halo properties using a set of N-body simulations. We measure significant cross-correlations between large-scale tidal fields and several non-scalar halo properties: shapes, velocity dispersion, and angular momentum. Selection effects that couple to these non-scalar halo properties can produce anisotropic clustering even in real-space. We investigate the size of this effect and show that it can produce a non-zero quadrupole similar in size to the one generated by linear redshift-space distortions (RSD). Finally, we investigate the clu…
How the cosmic web feeds halos, and fuels galaxy formation is an open question with wide implications. This study explores the mass assembly in the Local Group within the context of the local cosmography by employing simulations whose initial conditions have been constrained to reproduce the local environment. The goal of this study is to inspect whether the direction of accretion of satellites on to the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies, is related to the cosmic web. The analysis considers the three high-resolution simulations available in the HESTIA simulation suite, as well as the derived ve…
We study the alignments of satellite galaxies, and their anisotropic distribution, with respect to location and orientation of their host central galaxy in MassiveBlack-II and IllustrisTNG simulations. We find that: the shape of the satellite system in halos of mass ($> 10^{13}h^{-1}M_{\odot}$) is well aligned with the shape of the central galaxy at $z=0.06$ with the mean alignment between the major axes being $\sim Δθ= 12^{\circ}$ when compared to a uniform random distribution; that satellite galaxies tend to be anisotropically distributed along the major axis of the central galaxy with a str…
We explore how the galaxy stellar spins acquire a peculiar tendency of being aligned with the major principal axes of the local tidal fields, in contrast to their DM counterparts which tend to be perpendicular to them, regardless of their masses. Analyzing the halo and subhalo catalogs from the IllustrisTNG 300 hydrodynamic simulations at $z\le 1$, we determine the cosines of the alignment angles, $\cosα$, between the galaxy stellar and DM spins. Creating four $\cosα$-selected samples of the galaxies and then controlling them to share the same density and mass distributions, we determine the a…
In this work we investigate the environmental dependence of the intrinsic ellipticity correlations in cosmic shear surveys. We use the quadratic and linear alignment model to describe the contributions by spiral and elliptical galaxies, respectively. The density field is in both cases described by a Gaussian random field and ellipticity correlation functions that are conditional on the environment of the galaxies are constructed by sampling random values for the tidal tensor and inertial tensor. The covariance of the Gaussian random process from which the tensor entries are drawn is decomposed…
The gravitational coupling between large-scale perturbations and small-scale perturbations leads to anisotropic distortions of the small-scale matter distribution. The measured local small-scale power spectrum can thus be used to infer the large-scale matter distribution. In this paper, we present a new tidal reconstruction algorithm for reconstructing large-scale modes using the full three-dimensional tidal shear information. We apply it to simulated dark matter halo fields and the reconstructed large-scale density field correlates well with the original matter density field on large scales, …
The non-linear cosmic web environment of dark matter haloes plays a major role in shaping their growth and evolution, and potentially also affects the galaxies that reside in them. We develop an analytical (halo model) formalism to describe the tidal field of anisotropic halo-centric density distributions, as characterised by the halo-centric tidal tensor $\langle T_{ij} \rangle(<R)$ spherically averaged on scale $R\sim4R_{\rm vir}$ for haloes of virial radius $R_{\rm vir}$. We focus on axisymmetric anisotropies, which allows us to explore simple and intuitive toy models of (sub)halo configura…
The well-developed separate universe technique enables accurate calibration of the response of any observable to an isotropic long-wavelength density fluctuation. The large-scale environment also hosts tidal modes that perturb all observables anisotropically. As in the separate universe, both the long tidal and density modes can be absorbed by an effective anisotropic background, on which the interaction and evolution of the short modes change accordingly. We further develop the tidal simulation method, including proper corrections to the second order Lagrangian perturbation theory (2LPT) to g…
The gravitational coupling of a long-wavelength tidal field with small-scale density fluctuations leads to anisotropic distortions of the locally measured small-scale matter correlation function. Since the local correlation function is known to be statistically isotropic in the absence of such tidal interactions, the tidal distortions can be used to reconstruct the long-wavelength tidal field and large-scale density field in analogy with the cosmic microwave background lensing reconstruction. In this paper we present the theoretical framework of cosmic tidal reconstruction and test the reconst…
Long-wavelength matter inhomogeneities contain cleaner information on the nature of primordial perturbations as well as the physics of the early universe. The large-scale coherent overdensity and tidal force, not directly observable for a finite-volume galaxy survey, are both related to the Hessian of large-scale gravitational potential and therefore of equal importance. We show that the coherent tidal force causes a homogeneous anisotropic distortion of the observed distribution of galaxies in all three directions, perpendicular and parallel to the line-of-sight direction. This effect mimics …
The Local Group is often seen to be a quiescent environment without significant merger events. However an ancient major merger may have occurred in the most massive galaxy. Numerical simulations have shown that tidal tails formed during gas-rich major mergers are long-lived and could be responsible for old stellar streams and likely induce the formation of tidal dwarf galaxies (TDGs). Using several hydrodynamical simulations we have investigated the most prominent tidal tail formed during the first passage, which is gas-rich and contains old and metal poor stars. We discovered several striking…
We study the role of the local tidal environment in determining the assembly bias of dark matter haloes. Previous results suggest that the anisotropy of a halo's environment (i.e, whether it lies in a filament or in a more isotropic region) can play a significant role in determining the eventual mass and age of the halo. We statistically isolate this effect using correlations between the large-scale and small-scale environments of simulated haloes at $z=0$ with masses between $10^{11.6}\lesssim (m/h^{-1}M_{\odot})\lesssim10^{14.9}$. We probe the large-scale environment using a novel halo-by-ha…
The super-sample tidal effect carries information on long-wavelength fluctuations that we cannot measure directly. It arises from the mode-coupling between short-wavelength and long-wavelength perturbations beyond a finite region of a galaxy survey and violates statistical isotropy of observed galaxy power spectra. In this paper, we propose the use of bipolar spherical harmonic (BipoSH) decomposition formalism to characterize statistically anisotropic power spectra. Using the BipoSH formalism, we perform a comprehensive study of the effect of the super-sample tides on measurements of other cos…
The geometry of the cosmic web drives in part the spin acquisition of galaxies. This can be explained in a Lagrangian framework, by identifying the specific long-wavelength correlations within the primordial Gaussian random field which are relevant to spin acquisition. Tidal Torque Theory is revisited in the context of such anisotropic environments, biased by the presence of a filament within a wall. The point process of filament-type saddles represents it most efficiently. The constrained misalignment between the tidal and the inertia tensors in the vicinity of filament-type saddles simply ex…
The outer regions of galaxies are more susceptible to the tidal interactions that lead to intrinsic alignments of galaxies. The resulting alignment signal may therefore depend on the passband if the colours of galaxies vary spatially. To quantify this, we measured the shapes of galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts from the GAMA survey using deep gri imaging data from the KiloDegree Survey. The performance of the moment-based shape measurement algorithm DEIMOS was assessed using dedicated image simulations, which showed that the ellipticities could be determined with an accuracy better than 1%…
If the orientations of galaxies are correlated with large-scale structure, then anisotropic selection effects such as preferential selection of face-on disc galaxies can contaminate large scale structure observables. Here we consider the effect on the galaxy bispectrum, which has attracted interest as a way to break the degeneracy between galaxy bias and the amplitude of matter fluctuations sigma_8. We consider two models of intrinsic galaxy alignments: one where the probability distribution for the galaxy's orientation contains a term linear in the local tidal field, appropriate for elliptica…
Mock member stars for 28 dwarf galaxies are constructed from the cosmological Auriga simulation, which reflect the dynamical status of realistic stellar tracers. The axis-symmetric Jeans Anisotropic Multi-Gaussian Expansion (JAM) modeling is applied to 6,000 star particles for each system, to recover the underlying matter distribution. The stellar or dark matter component individually is poorly recovered, but the total profile is constrained more reasonably. The mass within the half-mass radius of tracers is recovered the tightest, and the mass between 200 and 300 pc, $M(200-300\mathrm{pc})$, …
Observational studies of galaxy isophotal shapes have shown that galaxy orientations are anisotropic: a galaxy's long axis tends to be oriented toward the center of its host. This radial alignment is seen across a wide range of scales, from galaxies in massive clusters to small Milky Way type satellite systems. Recently, this effect has also been detected in dark matter simulations of cosmological structure, but the degree of alignment of dark matter substructures in these studies is significantly stronger than seen in observations. In this paper we attempt to reconcile these two results by pe…
We show that intrinsic (not lensing-induced) correlations between galaxy shapes offer a new probe of primordial non-Gaussianity and inflationary physics which is complementary to galaxy number counts. Specifically, intrinsic alignment correlations are sensitive to an anisotropic squeezed limit bispectrum of the primordial perturbations. Such a feature arises in solid inflation, as well as more broadly in the presence of light higher spin fields during inflation (as pointed out recently by Arkani-Hamed and Maldacena). We present a derivation of the all-sky two-point correlations of intrinsic sh…
We constrain the distributions of projected radial alignment angles of satellite galaxy shapes within the Galaxy And Mass Assembly survey group catalogue. We identify the galaxy groups using spectroscopic redshifts and measure galaxy projected ellipticities from Sloan Digital Sky Survey imaging. With a sample of 3,850 groups with 13,655 satellite galaxies with high quality shape measurements, we find a less than 2-sigma signal of radial alignments in the mean projected ellipticity components and the projected position angle when using galaxy shape estimates optimized for weak lensing measureme…
This work investigates the connection between the cosmic web and the halo distribution through the gravitational potential at the field level. We combine three fields of research, cosmic web classification, perturbation theory expansions of the halo bias, and halo (galaxy) mock catalogue making methods. In particular, we use the invariants of the tidal field and the velocity shear tensor as generating functions to reproduce the halo number counts of a reference catalogue from full gravity calculations, populating the dark matter field on a mesh well into the non-linear regime ($3\,h^{-1}\,{\rm…
