Observational studies of galaxy isophotal shapes have shown that galaxy orientations are anisotropic: a galaxy's long axis tends to be oriented toward the center of its host. This radial alignment is seen across a wide range of scales, from galaxies in massive clusters to small Milky Way type satellite systems. Recently, this effect has also been detected in dark matter simulations of cosmological structure, but the degree of alignment of dark matter substructures in these studies is significantly stronger than seen in observations. In this paper we attempt to reconcile these two results by performing high-resolution numerical experiments on N-body multi-component models of triaxial galaxies orbiting in an external analytical potential. The large number of particles employed allows us to probe deep into the inner structure of the galaxy: we show that the discrepancy between observed galaxies and simulated dark matter halos is a natural consequence of induced radial shape twisting in the galaxy by the external potential. The degree of twisting depends strongly on the orbital phase and eccentricity of the satellite, and it can, under certain conditions, be significant at radii smaller than the dark matter scale radius. Such internal misalignments will have important consequences, both for the dynamical evolution of the galaxy itself, and for mass modeling of galaxies in clustered environments.
Correlations of galaxy ellipticities with large-scale structure, due to galactic tidal interactions, provide a potentially significant contaminant to measurements of cosmic shear. However, these intrinsic alignments are still poorly understood for galaxies at the redshifts typically used in cosmic shear analyses. For spiral galaxies, it is thought that tidal torquing is significant in determining alignments resulting in zero correlation between the intrinsic ellipticity and the gravitational potential in linear theory. Here, we calculate the leading-order correction to this result in the tidal…
Accurate measurements of the cosmic shear signal require a separation of the true weak gravitational lensing signal from intrinsic shape correlations of galaxies. These `intrinsic alignments' of galaxies originate from galaxy formation processes and are expected to be correlated with the gravitational field through tidal processes affecting the galaxies, such as tidal shearing for elliptical galaxies and tidal torquing for spiral galaxies. In this study, we use morphologically selected samples of elliptical and spiral galaxies from the IllustrisTNG simulation at z=0 and z=1 to test the commonl…
We present a deep broadband optical imaging study of a complete sample of luminous elliptical galaxies (M_B<-20) at distances 15 Mpc - 50 Mpc, selected from the Tully catalog of nearby galaxies. The images are flat to ~0.35% across the 20' field and reach a V band depth of 27.7 mag arcsec^-2. We derive an objective tidal interaction parameter for all galaxies and find that 73% of them show tidal disturbance signatures in their stellar bodies. This is the first time that such an analysis is done on a statistically complete sample and it confirms that tidal features in ellipticals are common eve…
We use deep V-band surface photometry of five of the brightest elliptical galaxies in the Virgo cluster to search for diffuse tidal streams, shells, and plumes in their outer halos (r > 50 kpc). We fit and subtract elliptical isophotal models from the galaxy images to reveal a variety of substructure, with surface brightnesses in the range mu_V= 26-29 mag/arcsec^2. M49 possesses an extended, interleaved shell system reminiscent of the radial accretion of a satellite companion, while M89's complex system of shells and plumes suggests a more complicated accretion history involving either multipl…
We present an analysis of the neutral hydrogen and stellar populations of elliptical galaxies in the Tal et al. (2009) sample. Our aim is to test their conclusion that the continuing assembly of these galaxies at z~0 is essentially gas-free and not accompanied by significant star formation. In order to do so, we make use of HI data and line-strength indices available in the literature. We look for direct and indirect evidence of the presence of cold gas during the recent assembly of these objects and analyse its relation to galaxy morphological fine structure. We find that >25% of ellipticals …
The formation of tidal dwarf galaxies (TDGs) is triggered by the encounters of already existing galaxies. Their existence is predicted from numerical calculations of encountering galaxies and is also well documented with observations. The numerical calculations on the formation of TDGs furthermore predict that TDGs cannot contain significant amounts of non-baryonic dark matter. In this paper, the first exhaustive sample of TDG-candidates from observations and numerical calculations is gathered from the literature. These stellar systems are gas-rich at the present, but they will probably evolve…
We present a new deep optical study of a luminosity limited sample of nearby elliptical galaxies, attempting to observe the effects of gravitational interactions on the ISM of these objects. This study is motivated by recent observations of M86, a nearby elliptical galaxy that shows possible evidence for gas heating through a recent gravitational interaction. The complete sample includes luminous ellipticals in clusters, groups and the field. For each of the galaxies we objectively derive a tidal parameter which measures the deviation of the stellar body from a smooth, relaxed model and find t…
Intrinsic alignments of galaxies are recognised as one of the most important systematic in weak lensing surveys on small angular scales. In this paper we investigate ellipticity correlation functions that are measured separately on elliptical and spiral galaxies, for which we assume the generic alignment mechanisms based on tidal shearing and tidal torquing, respectively. Including morphological information allows to find linear combinations of measured ellipticity correlation functions which suppress the gravitational lensing signal completely or which show a strongly boosted gravitational le…
We perform a joint analysis of intrinsic alignments and cosmology using tomographic weak lensing, galaxy clustering and galaxy-galaxy lensing measurements from Year 1 (Y1) of the Dark Energy Survey. We define early- and late-type subsamples, which are found to pass a series of systematics tests, including for spurious photometric redshift error and point spread function correlations. We analyse these split data alongside the fiducial mixed Y1 sample using a range of intrinsic alignment models. In a fiducial Nonlinear Alignment Model (NLA) analysis, assuming a flat \lcdm~cosmology, we find a si…
Elliptical galaxies today appear aligned with the large-scale structure of the Universe, but it is still an open question when they acquire this alignment. Observational data is currently insufficient to provide constraints on the time evolution of intrinsic alignments, and hence existing models range from assuming that galaxies gain some primordial alignment at formation, to suggesting that they react instantaneously to tidal interactions with the large-scale structure. Using the cosmological hydrodynamical simulation Horizon-AGN, we measure the relative alignments between the major axes of g…
We present the dynamical analysis of a sample of 12 dwarf elliptical (dE) galaxies for which we have obtained SAURON large-scale two-dimensional spectroscopic data. We construct Jeans axisymmetric models and obtain total dynamical masses enclosed within one effective radius. We use the obtained values to show that the validity of the dynamical scaling relations of massive early-type galaxies can be extended to these low-mass systems, except that dEs seem to contain relatively larger fraction of dark matter in their inner parts. We then demonstrate that dE galaxies have lower angular momenta th…
With the aim of finding evidence of tidal stripping of globular clusters (GCs) we analysed a sample of 13 elliptical galaxies taken from the ACS Virgo Cluster Survey (VCS). These galaxies belong to the main concentration of the Virgo cluster (VC) and present absolute magnitudes $-18.5<M_z<-22.5$. We used the public GC catalog of Jordán et al. (2008) and separated the GC population into metal poor (blue) and metal rich (red) according to their integrated colors. The galaxy properties were taken from \citet{Peng:2008}. We found that: 1) The specific frequencies ($S_N$) of total and blue GC popul…
Compact elliptical galaxies are characterized by small sizes and high stellar densities. They are thought to form through tidal stripping of massive progenitors. However, only a handful of them were known, preventing us from understanding the role played by this mechanism in galaxy evolution. We present a population of 21 compact elliptical galaxies gathered with the Virtual Observatory. Follow-up spectroscopy and data mining, using high-resolution images and large databases, show that all the galaxies exhibit old metal-rich stellar populations different from those of dwarf elliptical galaxies…
We report the discovery of the second compact elliptical (cE) galaxy SDSSJ150634.27+013331.6 in the nearby NGC5846 group by the Virtual Observatory (VO) workflow . This object (M_B = -15.98 mag, R_e = 0.24 kpc) becomes the fifth cE where the spatially-resolved kinematics and stellar populations can be obtained. We used archival HST WFPC2 images to demonstrate that its light profile has a two-component structure, and integrated photometry from GALEX, SDSS, UKIDSS, and Spitzer to build the multi-wavelength SED to constraint the star formation history (SFH). We observed this galaxy with the PMAS …
Advances on the formation and survival of the so-called Tidal Dwarf Galaxies (TDGs) are reviewed. The understanding on how objects of the mass of dwarf galaxies may form in debris of galactic collisions has recently benefited from the coupling of multi-wavelength observations with numerical simulations of galaxy mergers. Nonetheless, no consensual scenario has yet emerged and as a matter of fact the very definition of TDGs remains elusive. Their real cosmological importance is also a matter of debate, their presence in our Local Group of galaxies as well. Identifying old, evolved, TDGs among t…
Strong gravitational lensing by groups or clusters of galaxies provides a powerful technique to measure the dark matter properties of individual lens galaxies. We study in detail the mass distribution of the satellite lens galaxy in the group-scale lens SL2S J08544-0121 by modelling simultaneously the spatially extended surface brightness distribution of the source galaxy and the lens mass distribution using Markov chain Monte Carlo methods. In particular, we measure the dark matter halo size of the satellite lens galaxy to be 6.0^{+2.9}_{-2.0} kpc with a fiducial velocity dispersion of 127^{+…
Using data from the Spitzer Space Telescope, we analyze the mid-infrared (3-70 micron) spectral energy distributions of dry merger candidates in the Bootes field of the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey. These candidates were selected by previous authors to be luminous, red, early-type galaxies with morphological evidence of recent tidal interactions. We find that a significant fraction of these candidates exhibit 8 and 24 micron excesses compared to expectations for old stellar populations. We estimate that a quarter of dry merger candidates have mid-infrared-derived star formation rates greater th…
We use galaxies from the IllustrisTNG, MassiveBlack-II and Illustris hydrodynamic simulations to investigate the behaviour of large scale galaxy intrinsic alignments. Our analysis spans four redshift slices over the approximate range of contemporary lensing surveys $z=0-1$. We construct comparable weighted samples from the three simulations, which we then analyse using an alignment model that includes both linear and quadratic alignment contributions. Our data vector includes galaxy-galaxy, galaxy-shape and shape-shape projected correlations, with the joint covariance matrix estimated analytic…
We study the evolution of angular momenta of ($M_*=10^{10}-10^{12}\msun$) galaxies utilizing large-scale ultra-high resolution cosmological hydrodynamic simulations and find that spin of the stellar component changes direction frequently, caused by major mergers, minor mergers, significant gas inflows and torques by nearby systems. The rate and nature of change of spin direction can not be accounted for by large-scale tidal torques, because the latter fall short in rates by orders of magnitude and because the apparent random swings of the spin direction are inconsistent with alignment by linea…
Galaxies are not distributed randomly in the cosmic web but are instead arranged in filaments and sheets surrounding cosmic voids. Observationally there is still no convincing evidence of a link between the properties of galaxies and their host structures. However, by the tidal torque theory (our understanding of the origin of galaxy angular momentum), such a link should exist. Using the presently largest spectroscopic galaxy redshift survey (SDSS) we study the connection between the spin axes of galaxies and the orientation of their host filaments. We use a three dimensional field of orientat…
As part of the SPLASH survey of the Andromeda galaxy (M31) and its neighbors, we have obtained Keck/DEIMOS spectra of the compact elliptical (cE) satellite M32. This is the first resolved-star kinematical study of any cE galaxy. In contrast to previous studies that extended out to r<30"~1Re~100pc, we measure the rotation curve and velocity dispersion profile out to r~250" and higher order Gauss-Hermite moments out to r~70". We achieve this by combining integrated-light spectroscopy at small radii (where crowding/blending are severe) with resolved stellar spectroscopy at larger radii, using spa…
We test the regime of validity of the effective field theory (EFT) of intrinsic alignments (IA) at the one-loop level by comparing with 3D halo shape statistics in N-body simulations. This model is based on the effective field theory of large-scale structure (EFT of LSS) and thus a theoretically well-motivated extension of the familiar non-linear alignment (NLA) model and the tidal-alignment-tidal-torquing (TATT) model. It contains a total of $8$ free bias parameters. Specifically, we measure the dark matter halo shape-shape multipoles $P_{EE}^{(0)}(k), P_{EE}^{(2)}(k), P_{BB}^{(0)}(k), P_{BB}…
It has been suggested that merging plays an important role in the formation and the evolution of elliptical galaxies(EGs). In order to understand the past merging history of EGs, we studied the optical-NIR color gradients of 204 EGs. The use of the optical and the NIR data provides large wavelength baselines, and breaks the age-metallicity(Z) degeneracy, allowing us to derive age and Z gradients. The use of the deep SDSS Stripe 82 images make it possible for us to examine how the color/age/Z gradients are related to merging features. We find that the optical-NIR color and the age/Z gradients o…
Context: There is strong evidence that globular cluster systems (GCSs) of massive galaxies are largely assembled by infall/accretion processes. Therefore, we expect the GCSs of isolated elliptical galaxies to be poor. Alhough not completely isolated, NGC 7507 is a massive field elliptical galaxy with an apparently very low dark matter content. Aims: We determine the richness, the colour distribution, and the structural properties of the GCS of NGC 7507. Methods: We perform wide-field Washington photometry with data obtained with the MOSAIC II camera at the 4m-Blanco telescope, CTIO. Results: T…
We study how halo intrinsic dynamical properties are linked to their formation processes for halos in two mass ranges, $10^{12}-10^{12.5}h^{-1}{\rm M_\odot}$ and $\ge 10^{13}h^{-1}{\rm M_\odot}$, and how both are correlated with the large scale tidal field within which the halos reside at present. Halo merger trees obtained from cosmological $N$-body simulations are used to identify infall halos that are about to merge with their hosts. We find that the tangential component of the infall velocity increases significantly with the strength of the local tidal field, but no strong correlation is f…
In this work we investigate the environmental dependence of the intrinsic ellipticity correlations in cosmic shear surveys. We use the quadratic and linear alignment model to describe the contributions by spiral and elliptical galaxies, respectively. The density field is in both cases described by a Gaussian random field and ellipticity correlation functions that are conditional on the environment of the galaxies are constructed by sampling random values for the tidal tensor and inertial tensor. The covariance of the Gaussian random process from which the tensor entries are drawn is decomposed…
We investigate a physical, composite alignment model for both spiral and elliptical galaxies and its impact on cosmological parameter estimation from weak lensing for a tomographic survey. Ellipticity correlation functions and angular ellipticity spectra for spiral and elliptical galaxies are derived on the basis of tidal interactions with the cosmic large-scale structure and compared to the tomographic weak lensing signal. We find that elliptical galaxies cause a contribution to the weak-lensing dominated ellipticity correlation on intermediate angular scales between $\ell\simeq40$ and $\ell\…
We present new Hubble Space Telescope imaging of the outer regions of M87 in order to study its globular cluster (GC) population out to large galactocentric distances. We discuss particularly the relationship between GC effective radii $r_h$ and projected galactocentric distance $R_{gc}$. The observations suggest a shallow trend $r_h \propto R_{gc}^{0.14}$ out to $R_{gc} \sim 100$ kpc, in agreement with studies of other giant elliptical galaxies. To theoretically reproduce this relationship we simulate GC populations with various distributions of orbits. For an isotropic distribution of cluste…
As a large-scale overdensity collapses, it affects the orientation and shape of galaxies that form, by exerting tidal shear along their axes. Therefore, the shapes of elliptical galaxies align with the tidal field of cosmic structures. This intrinsic alignment provides insights into galaxy formation and the primordial universe, complements late-time cosmological probes and constitutes a significant systematic effect for weak gravitational lensing observations. In the present study, we provide constraints on the linear alignment model using a fully Bayesian field-level approach, using galaxy sh…
Galaxy intrinsic alignments (IA) are a critical uncertainty for current and future weak lensing measurements. We describe a perturbative expansion of IA, analogous to the treatment of galaxy biasing. From an astrophysical perspective, this model includes the expected large-scale alignment mechanisms for galaxies that are pressure-supported (tidal alignment) and rotation-supported (tidal torquing) as well as the cross-correlation between the two. Alternatively, this expansion can be viewed as an effective model capturing all relevant effects up to the given order. We include terms up to second …

We study the mean tidal coherence of galaxy environments as a function of intrinsic luminosity determined by the absolute $r$-band magnitude. The tidal coherence of a galaxy environment is estimated as the cosine of the angle between two minor eigenvectors of the tidal field smoothed at the scales of $2$ and $30\,h^{-1}$Mpc centered on each of the local galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Data Release 10. Creating four luminosity-selected samples of the Sloan galaxies, we control them to have identical density distributions, in order to nullify the dominant effect of the local density. It is f…
We derive stellar population parameters for a representative sample of ultracompact dwarfs (UCDs) and a large sample of massive globular clusters (GCs) with stellar masses $\gtrsim$ 10$^{6}$ $M_{\odot}$ in the central galaxy M87 of the Virgo galaxy cluster, based on model fitting to the Lick-index measurements from both the literature and new observations. After necessary spectral stacking of the relatively faint objects in our initial sample of 40 UCDs and 118 GCs, we obtain 30 sets of Lick-index measurements for UCDs and 80 for GCs. The M87 UCDs have ages $\gtrsim$ 8 Gyr and [$α$/Fe] $\simeq…
Recent observations revealed a mysterious ultra diffuse galaxy, NGC1052-DF2, in the group of a large elliptical galaxy, NGC1052. Compared to expectations from abundance matching models, the dark matter mass contained in NGC1052-DF2 is smaller by a factor of $\sim 400$. We utilize controlled $N$-body simulations of the tidal interaction between NGC1052 and a smaller satellite galaxy, that we suppose as the progenitor of NGC1052-DF2, to test if tidal stripping can explain dark-matter deficiency at such levels. We find that when assuming a tightly bound and quite radial orbit and cored density st…
