We report the discovery of the second compact elliptical (cE) galaxy SDSSJ150634.27+013331.6 in the nearby NGC5846 group by the Virtual Observatory (VO) workflow . This object (M_B = -15.98 mag, R_e = 0.24 kpc) becomes the fifth cE where the spatially-resolved kinematics and stellar populations can be obtained. We used archival HST WFPC2 images to demonstrate that its light profile has a two-component structure, and integrated photometry from GALEX, SDSS, UKIDSS, and Spitzer to build the multi-wavelength SED to constraint the star formation history (SFH). We observed this galaxy with the PMAS IFU spectrograph at the Calar-Alto 3.5m telescope and obtained two-dimensional maps of its kinematics and stellar population properties using the full-spectral fitting technique. Its structural, dynamical and stellar population properties suggest that it had a massive progenitor heavily tidally stripped by NGC5846.
We present the discovery of an isolated compact elliptical (cE) galaxy, found during a search of SDSS DR7 for cEs, and for which we obtained WHT/ACAM imaging. It is ~900 kpc distant from its nearest neighbour, has an effective r-band radius of ~500 pc and a B-band mean surface brightness within its effective radius of 19.75 mag/arcsec. Serendipitous deep SuprimeCam imaging shows that there is no underlying disk. Its isolated position suggests that there is an alternative channel to the stripping scenario for the formation of compact ellipticals. We also report analysis of recent deeper imaging…
We have started a study of luminosity functions of Fossil Group candidates in order to characterize the faint-end of their galaxy distribution. Here we report on results of nine of them from SDSS photometry.
We present a series of hundreds of collisionless simulations of galaxy group mergers. These simulations are designed to test whether the properties of elliptical galaxies - including the key fundamental plane scaling relation, morphology and kinematics - can be simultaneously reproduced by dry multiple mergers in galaxy groups. Preliminary results indicate that galaxy group mergers can produce elliptical remnants lying on a tilted fundamental plane, even without a central dissipational component from a starburst. This suggests that multiple mergers in groups are an alternate avenue for the for…
Spitzer and AKARI observations have found that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are present in nearby elliptical galaxies, but their spatial distributions are still unknown. In order to investigate their distributions, we performed deep spectral mapping observations of the PAH-detected elliptical galaxy NGC4589, a merger remnant with a minor-axis optical dust lane. As a result, we obtain clear evidence that the PAH 11.3 um emission comes predominantly from the dust lane of the galaxy. We also detect molecular hydrogen line emissions from the dust lane. The PAH 17 um emission is distribu…
FCC046 is a Fornax Cluster dwarf elliptical galaxy. Optical observations have shown that this galaxy, besides an old and metal-poor stellar population, also contains a very young centrally concentrated population and is actively forming stars, albeit at a very low level. Here, we report on 21cm observations of FCC046 with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) which we conducted in the course of a small survey of Fornax Cluster early-type dwarf galaxies. We have discovered a ~10^7 Mo HI cloud surrounding FCC046. We show that the presence of this significant gas reservoir offers a concise…
We confirm the existence of two compact elliptical (cE) galaxies in the central region of the Antlia cluster through MAGELLAN-MIKE and GEMINI-GMOS spectra. Only about a dozen galaxies of this rare type are known today up to a distance of 100 Mpc. With this finding, Antlia becomes the nearest galaxy cluster harbouring more than one cE galaxy among its galaxy population. One of these galaxies shows evidence of interaction with one of the giant ellipticals that dominate the central region of the cluster.
High-spatial resolution near-infrared (NIR) images of the central 24 x 24 arcsec^2 (~ 2 x 2 kpc^2) of the elliptical galaxy NGC 1052 reveal a total of 25 compact sources randomly distributed in the region. Fifteen of them exhibit Halpha luminosities an order of magnitude above the estimate for an evolved population of extreme horizontal branch stars. Their Halpha equivalent widths and optical-to-NIR spectral energy distributions are consistent with them being young stellar clusters aged < 7 Myr. We consider this to be the first direct observation of spatially resolved star-forming regions in t…
Elliptical galaxies have hot coronae with X-ray luminosities and mean gas temperatures that span over wide ranges. This variation can be partially due to the energy budget of the hot gas, that depends on the host galaxy structure and internal kinematics. With the aid of realistic axisymmetric galaxy models, we performed a diagnostic study focussed on the effects of galaxy flattening and rotational support on the hot gas temperature.
We present collisionless simulations of dry mergers in groups of three to twenty-five galaxies to test the hypothesis that elliptical galaxies form at the centers of such groups. Mock observations of the central remnants confirm their similarity to ellipticals, despite having no dissipational component. We vary the profile of the original spiral's bulge and find that ellipticals formed from spirals with exponential bulges have too low Sersic indices. Mergers of spirals with de Vaucouleurs (classical) bulges produce remnants with larger Sersic indices correlated with luminosity, as with SDSS el…
The Elliptical Isolated X-ray (ElIXr) Galaxy Survey is a volume-limited (<110Mpc) study of optically selected, isolated, Lstar elliptical galaxies, to provide an X-ray census of galaxy-scale (virial mass, Mvir < 1e13 Msun) objects, and identify candidates for detailed hydrostatic mass modelling. In this paper, we present a Chandra and XMM study of one such candidate, NGC1521, and constrain its distribution of dark and baryonic matter. We find a morphologically relaxed hot gas halo, extending almost to R500, that is well described by hydrostatic models similar to the benchmark, baryonically clo…
Elliptical galaxies are systems where dark matter is usually less necessary to explain observed dynamics than in the case of spiral galaxies, however there are some instances where Newtonian gravity and the observable mass are insufficient to explain their observed structure and kinematics. Such is the case of NGC 4649, a massive elliptical galaxy in the Virgo cluster for which recent studies report a high fraction of dark matter, 0.78 at $4R_e$. However this galaxy has been studied within the MOND hypothesis, where a good agreement with the observed values of velocity dispersion is found. Usi…
Systematic surveys of nearby early type galaxies (ETGs) using integral field unit spectrograph (IFU) data have revealed that galaxies can hide interesting structures only visible through kinematic studies. As part of their pioneering work, the ATLAS3D team have shown that most morphologically elliptical galaxies are centrally kinematically disk-like. Hence, while global morphology suggests that ellipticals are ellipsoidal/triaxial in shape, their central kinematics may be consistent with (inclined) oblate systems. Here we study the Fast Rotator elliptical galaxy: NGC 4473. Using slitlets, we o…
We present the spatial distributions of dust and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the elliptical galaxy NGC4125, revealed by AKARI and Spitzer. NGC4125 is relatively bright in the dust and the PAH emision for elliptical galaxies, although it certainly possesses diffuse interstellar hot plasma indicated by the high spatial resolution X-ray data of Chandra. We investigate how the dust and PAHs interact with the X-ray plasma or avoid the interaction by comparing their spatial distributions. We find that the distributions of the PAHs and dust are different from each other, both showing a…
Hubble Space Telescope studies of the resolved stellar population of elliptical galaxies have shown that the galaxies form by steady accretion of gas which is all the while forming stars and evolving chemically to a metallicity distribution that is as high as solar composition in the most massive objects that have been analyzed, and much lower for low mass ellipticals. In this paper we study for the first time the stellar content of an early type spiral galaxy, the massive disk galaxy, the Sombrero, NGC 4594. We consider whether the metallicity distribution function (MDF) in the observed field…
We present a photometric study of the globular clusters (GCs) in the Virgo giant elliptical galaxy M86 based on Washington CT1 images. The colors of the GCs in M86 show a bimodal distribution with a blue peak at (C -T1) = 1.30 and a red peak at (C -T1) = 1.72. The spatial distribution of the red GCs is elongated similarly to that of the stellar halo, while that of the blue GCs is roughly circular. The radial number density profile of the blue GCs is more extended than that of the red GCs. The radial number density profile of the red GCs is consistent with the surface brightness profile of the …
We present high quality long slit spectra along the major and minor axes out to 1.5 effective radius ($R_e$) of the massive galaxy NGC4636 taken by Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET). Using Fourier Correlation Quotient (FCQ) method, we measured the stellar line-of-sight velocity distribution along the axes. Furthermore, six Lick/IDS indices ($Hβ,Mgb,Fe_{5015},Fe_{5270},Fe_{5335},Fe_{5406}$) are derived from the clean spectrum. By comparing the measured absorption line strengths with the predictions of Simple Stellar Populations (SSP) models, we derived ages, total metallicity and $α$ abundance profi…
We model the formation of Auriga's Wheel - a recently discovered collisional ring galaxy. Auriga's Wheel has a number of interesting features including a bridge of stars linking the neighbouring elliptical to the ring galaxy, and evidence for components of expansion and rotation within the ring. Using N-body/SPH modelling, we study collisions between an elliptical galaxy and a late-type disk galaxy. A near direct collision, with a mildy inclined disk, is found to reasonably reproduce the general system morphology ~50 Myr following the collision. The collision must have a relatively low velocit…
Dwarf elliptical galaxies are the most common galaxy type in nearby galaxy clusters, yet they remain relatively poorly studied objects and many of their basic properties have yet to be quantified. In this contribution we present the preliminary results of a study of 4 Virgo and 1 field galaxy obtained with the SAURON integral field unit on the William Herschel Telescope (La Palma). While traditional long-slit observations are likely to miss more complicated kinematic features, with SAURON we are able to study both kinematics and stellar populations in two dimensions, obtaining a much more deta…
Recent evidence based independently on spectral line strengths and dynamical modelling point towards a non-universal stellar Initial Mass Function (IMF), probably implying an excess of low-mass stars in elliptical galaxies with a high velocity dispersion. Here we show that a time-independent bottom-heavy IMF is compatible neither with the observed metal-rich populations found in giant ellipticals nor with the number of stellar remnants observed within these systems. We suggest a two-stage formation scenario involving a time-dependent IMF to reconcile these observational constraints. In this mo…
We use an automated galaxy morphology analysis method to quantitatively measure the spirality of galaxies classified manually as elliptical. The data set used for the analysis consists of 60,518 galaxy images with redshift obtained by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and classified manually by Galaxy Zoo, as well as the RC3 and NA10 catalogues. We measure the spirality of the galaxies by using the Ganalyzer method, which transforms the galaxy image to its radial intensity plot to detect galaxy spirality that is in many cases difficult to notice by manual observation of the raw galaxy image.…
Recent hydrostatic X-ray studies of the hot interstellar medium (ISM) in early-type galaxies underestimate the gravitating mass as compared to stellar dynamics, implying modest, but significant deviations from exact hydrostatic equilibrium. We present a method for combining X-ray measurements and stellar dynamical constraints in the context of Bayesian statistics that allows the radial distribution of the implied nonthermal pressure or bulk motions in the hot ISM to be constrained. We demonstrate the accuracy of the method with hydrodynamical simulations tailored to produce a realistic galaxy …
We present the first systematic 1.4 GHz Very Large Array radio continuum survey of fossil galaxy group candidates. These are virialized systems believed to have assembled over a gigayear in the past through the merging of galaxy group members into a single, isolated, massive elliptical galaxy and featuring an extended hot X-ray halo. We use new photometric and spectroscopic data from SDSS Data Release 7 to determine that three of the candidates are clearly not fossil groups. Of the remaining 30 candidates, 67% contain a radio-loud (L_1.4GHz > 10^23 W Hz^-1) active galactic nucleus (AGN) at the…
We study the correlation between the morphological mix of cluster galaxies and the assembly history of the parent cluster by taking advantage of two independently developed semi-analytic models for galaxy formation and evolution. In our models, both the number of cluster members and that of elliptical members increase as a function of cluster mass, in such a way that the resulting elliptical fractions are approximately independent of cluster mass. The population of cluster ellipticals exhibit a marked bimodal distribution as a function of galaxy stellar mass, with a dip at masses $\sim 10^{10}…
We present equations for the gravitational lensing flexion expected for an elliptical lens mass distribution. These can be reduced to one-dimensional finite integrals, thus saving significant computing time over a full two-dimensional calculation. We estimate constraints on galaxy halo ellipticities for a range of potential future surveys, finding that the constraints from the two different types of flexion are comparable and are up to two orders of magnitude tighter than those from shear. Flexion therefore appears to be a very promising potential tool for constraining the shapes of galaxy hal…
A century ago, in 1911 and 1913, Plummer and then Reynolds introduced their models to describe the radial distribution of stars in `nebulae'. This article reviews the progress since then, providing both an historical perspective and a contemporary review of the stellar structure of bulges, discs and elliptical galaxies. The quantification of galaxy nuclei, such as central mass deficits and excess nuclear light, plus the structure of dark matter halos and cD galaxy envelopes, are discussed. Issues pertaining to spiral galaxies including dust, bulge-to-disc ratios, bulgeless galaxies, bars and t…
(Abridged) We present new photometric and spectroscopic observations of the famous Hoag's Object, a peculiar ring galaxy with a central roundish core. The nature of Hoag's Object is still under controversial discussion. Previous studies demonstrated that a major accretion event that took place at least 2-3 Gyr ago can account for the observational evidence. However, the role of internal nonlinear mechanisms in forming the outer ring was not yet completely ruled out. These new data, together with HI and optical information from the literature, are used to demonstrate that Hoag's Object is a rel…
Our knowledge on the central components of disk galaxies has grown substantially in the past few decades, particularly so in the last. This frantic activity and the complexity of the subject promote confusion in the community. In these notes, I discuss the concept of galactic bulge and its different flavors. I also address fundamental scaling relations and the bulge-elliptical galaxy connection, their central black holes and formation models. In particular, I aim at conveying three important notions: (i): box/peanuts are just the inner parts of bars; (ii): the physical reality of two different…
Gauss-Hermite and Gauss-Laguerre ("shapelet") decompositions of images have become important tools in galaxy modeling, particularly for the purpose of extracting ellipticity and morphological information from astronomical data. However, the standard shapelet basis functions cannot compactly represent galaxies with high ellipticity or large Sersic index, and the resulting underfitting bias has been shown to present a serious challenge for weak-lensing methods based on shapelets. We present here a new convolution relation and a compound "multi-scale" shapelet basis to address these problems, and…
Compact elliptical galaxies are characterized by small sizes and high stellar densities. They are thought to form through tidal stripping of massive progenitors. However, only a handful of them were known, preventing us from understanding the role played by this mechanism in galaxy evolution. We present a population of 21 compact elliptical galaxies gathered with the Virtual Observatory. Follow-up spectroscopy and data mining, using high-resolution images and large databases, show that all the galaxies exhibit old metal-rich stellar populations different from those of dwarf elliptical galaxies…
This is the summary chapter of a review book on galaxy bulges. Bulge properties and formation histories are more varied than those of ellipticals. I emphasize two advances: 1 - "Classical bulges" are observationally indistinguishable from ellipticals, and like them, are thought to form by major galaxy mergers. "Disky pseudobulges" are diskier and more actively star-forming (except in S0s) than are ellipticals. Theys are products of the slow ("secular") evolution of galaxy disks: bars and other nonaxisymmetries move disk gas toward the center, where it starbursts and builds relatively flat, rap…
We report the existence of spiral arms in the recently formed gaseous and dusty disk of the closest giant elliptical, NGC 5128 (Centaurus A), using high resolution 12CO(2-1) observations of the central 3 arcmin (3 kpc) obtained with the Submillimeter Array (SMA). This provides evidence that spiral-like features can develop within ellipticals if enough cold gas exists. We elucidate the distribution and kinematics of the molecular gas in this region with a resolution of 4.4 x 1.9 (80 pc x 40 pc). The spiral arms extend from the circumnuclear gas at a radius of 200 pc to at least 1 kiloparsec. Th…
We report the discovery from Hubble Space Telescope ACS images of an extended globular cluster, denoted by Scl-dE1 GC1, in the Sculptor Group dwarf Elliptical galaxy Scl-dE1 (Sc22). The distance of the dE is determined as 4.3 +/- 0.25 Mpc from the I magnitude of the tip of the red giant branch in the color-magnitude diagram. At this distance the half-light radius of Scl-dE1 GC1 is ~22 pc, placing it among the largest clusters known, particularly for globular clusters associated with dwarf galaxies. The absolute magnitude of Scl-dE1 GC1 is Mv = -6.7 and, to within the photometric uncertainties …
We perform a comprehensive study of X-ray cavities using a large sample of X-ray targets selected from the Chandra archive. The sample is selected to cover a large dynamic range including galaxy clusters, groups, and individual galaxies. Using $β$-modeling and unsharp masking techniques, we investigate the presence of X-ray cavities for 133 targets that have sufficient X-ray photons for analysis. We detect 148 X-ray cavities from 69 targets and measure their properties, including cavity size, angle, and distance from the center of the diffuse X-ray gas. We confirm the strong correlation betwee…
We describe two-dimensional gasdynamical computations of the X-ray emitting gas in the rotating elliptical galaxy NGC 4649 that indicate an inflow of about one solar mass per year at every radius. Such a large instantaneous inflow cannot have persisted over a Hubble time. The central constant-entropy temperature peak recently observed in the innermost 150 parsecs is explained by compressive heating as gas flows toward the central massive black hole. Since the cooling time of this gas is only a few million years, NGC 4649 provides the most acutely concentrated known example of the cooling flow …
