We perform a comprehensive study of X-ray cavities using a large sample of X-ray targets selected from the Chandra archive. The sample is selected to cover a large dynamic range including galaxy clusters, groups, and individual galaxies. Using $β$-modeling and unsharp masking techniques, we investigate the presence of X-ray cavities for 133 targets that have sufficient X-ray photons for analysis. We detect 148 X-ray cavities from 69 targets and measure their properties, including cavity size, angle, and distance from the center of the diffuse X-ray gas. We confirm the strong correlation between cavity size and distance from the X-ray center similar to previous studies (i.e., Birzan et al. 2004; Diehl et al. 2008; Dong et al. 2010). We find that the detection rates of X-ray cavities are similar among galaxy clusters, groups and individual galaxies, suggesting that the formation mechanism of X-ray cavities is independent of environment.
We present LOFAR observations at 120-168 MHz of 42 systems with possible X-ray cavities in their hot atmosphere, of which 17 are groups or ellipticals, 19 are nearby clusters (z<0.3), and six are higher-redshift clusters (z>0.3). The X-ray cavities, formed by the radio lobes of the central active galactic nucleus (AGN), are evidence of radio-mode AGN feedback. In the groups and ellipticals sample, more than half of the systems have X-ray cavities for which no associated lobe emission was detected. Conversely, we report the discovery of large radio lobes in NGC 6338, extending far beyond the em…
We present results based on the systematic analysis of currently available Chandra archive data on the brightest galaxy in the Draco constellation NGC 6338, in order to investigate the properties of the X-ray cavities. In the central ~6 kpc, at least a two and possibly three, X-ray cavities are evident. All these cavities are roughly of ellipsoidal shapes and show a decrement in the surface brightness of several tens of percent. In addition to these cavities, a set of X-ray bright filaments are also noticed which are spatially coincident with the Hα filaments over an extent of 15 kpc. The Hα e…
We have performed a systematic search for X-ray cavities in the hot gas of 51 galaxy groups with Chandra archival data. The cavities are identified based on two methods: subtracting an elliptical beta model fitted to the X-ray surface brightness, and performing unsharp masking. 13 groups in the sample 25% are identified as clearly containing cavities, with another 13 systems showing tentative evidence for such structures. We find tight correlations between the radial and tangential radii of the cavities, and between their size and projected distance from the group center, in quantitative agree…
We have studied a large number of elliptical galaxies and found a correlation between their dark matter content and the ellipticity of their visible shape. The galaxies were strictly selected so that only typical medium-size elliptical galaxies were considered. Galaxies with unusual characteristics were rejected to minimize point-to-point data scatter and avoid systematic biases. Data from six different techniques of extracting the galactic dark matter content were used to avoid methodological biases. A thorough investigation of the interrelation between attributes of elliptical galaxies was c…
We present a study of the thermal structure of the hot X-ray emitting atmospheres for a sample of 49 nearby X-ray and optically bright elliptical galaxies using {\it Chandra} X-ray data. We focus on the connection between the properties of the hot X-ray emitting gas and the cooler H$α$+[NII] emitting phase, and the possible role of the latter in the AGN (Active Galactic Nuclei) feedback cycle. We do not find evident correlations between the H$α$+[NII] emission and global properties such as X-ray luminosity, mass of hot gas, and gas mass fraction. We find that the presence of H$α$+[NII] emissio…
We have developed a new method(E-HOLICs) of estimating gravitational shear by adopting an elliptical weight function to measure background galaxy images in our previous paper. Following to the previous paper where isotropic Point Spread Function(PSF) correction is calculated, we consider an anisotropic PSF correction in this paper in order to apply E-HOLICs for real data. A an example, E-HOLICs is applied to Subaru data of massive and compact galaxy clusters A370, and is able to detect double peaks in the central region of the cluster consistent with the analysis of strong lensing. We also stu…
Modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) provides a paradigm alternative to dark matter that has been successful in fitting and predicting the rich phenomenology of rotating disc galaxies. There have also been attempts to test MOND in dispersion-supported early-type galaxies, but it remains unclear whether MOND can fit the various empirical properties of early-type galaxies. As a way of rigorously testing MOND in elliptical galaxies we calculate the MOND-predicted velocity dispersion profiles (VDPs) in the inner regions of $\sim 2000$ nearly round SDSS elliptical galaxies under a variety of assumpti…
This is the third paper on the improvements of systematic errors in our weak lensing analysis using an elliptical weight function, called E-HOLICs. In the previous papers we have succeeded in avoiding error which depends on ellipticity of background image. In this paper, we investigate the systematic error which depends on signal to noise ratio of background image. We find that the origin of the error is the random count noise which comes from Poisson noise of sky counts. Random count noise makes additional moments and centroid shift error, and those 1st orders are canceled in averaging, but 2…
In a sample of elliptical galaxies that span a large range of mass, a previously unused Ca index, CaHK, shows that [Ca/Fe] and [Ca/Mg] systematically decrease with increasing elliptical galaxy mass. Metallicity mixtures, age effects, stellar chromospheric emission effects, and low-mass initial mass function (IMF) boost effects are ruled out as causes. A [Ca/Fe] range of less than 0.3 dex is sufficient to blanket all observations. Feature gradients within galaxies imply a global Ca deficit rather than a radius-dependent phenomenon. Some, but not all, Type II supernova nucleosynthetic yield calc…
We present Chandra ACIS-I and ACIS-S observations ($\sim$200 ks in total) of the X-ray luminous elliptical galaxy NGC 4636, located in the outskirts of the Virgo cluster. A soft band (0.5-2 keV) image shows the presence of a bright core in the center surrounded by an extended X-ray corona and two pronounced quasi-symmetric, 8 kpc long, arm-like features. Each of this features defines the rimof an ellipsoidal bubble. An additional bubble-like feature, whose northern rim is located $\sim2$ kpc south of the north-eastern arm, is detected as well. We present surface brightness and temperature prof…
Motivated by recent developments in our understanding of the formation and evolution of massive galaxies, we explore the detailed photometric structure of a representative sample of 94 bright, nearby elliptical galaxies, using high-quality optical images from the Carnegie-Irvine Galaxy Survey. The sample spans a range of environments and stellar masses, from M* = 10^{10.2} to 10^{12.0} solar mass. We exploit the unique capabilities of two-dimensional image decomposition to explore the possibility that local elliptical galaxies may contain photometrically distinct substructure that can shed lig…
We present results from new Chandra, GMRT, and SOAR observations of NGC 5813, the dominant central galaxy in a nearby galaxy group. The system shows three pairs of collinear cavities at 1 kpc, 8 kpc, and 20 kpc from the central source, from three distinct outbursts of the central AGN, which occurred 3x10^6, 2x10^7, and 9x10^7 yr ago. The H-alpha and X-ray observations reveal filaments of cool gas that has been uplifted by the X-ray cavities. The inner two cavity pairs are filled with radio emitting plasma, and each pair is associated with an elliptical surface brightness edge, which we unambig…
We study the profiles of 75 086 elliptical galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) at both large (50-500 kpc/h) and small (~3 kpc/h) scales. Weak lensing observations in the outskirts of the halo are combined with measurements of the stellar velocity dispersion in the interior regions of the galaxy for stacked galaxy samples. The weak lensing measurements are well characterized by a Navarro, Frenk and White (NFW) profile. The dynamical mass measurements exceed the extrapolated NFW profile even after the estimated stellar masses are subtracted, providing evidence for the modification …
We report a systematic and statistically significant offset between the optical (g-z or B-I) colors of seven massive elliptical galaxies and the mean colors of their associated massive metal-rich globular clusters (GCs) in the sense that the parent galaxies are redder by 0.12-0.20 mag at a given galactocentric distance. However, spectroscopic indices in the blue indicate that the luminosity-weighted ages and metallicities of such galaxies are equal to that of their averaged massive metal-rich GCs at a given galactocentric distance, to within small uncertainties. The observed color differences …
Systematic surveys of nearby early type galaxies (ETGs) using integral field unit spectrograph (IFU) data have revealed that galaxies can hide interesting structures only visible through kinematic studies. As part of their pioneering work, the ATLAS3D team have shown that most morphologically elliptical galaxies are centrally kinematically disk-like. Hence, while global morphology suggests that ellipticals are ellipsoidal/triaxial in shape, their central kinematics may be consistent with (inclined) oblate systems. Here we study the Fast Rotator elliptical galaxy: NGC 4473. Using slitlets, we o…
We analyze six X-ray bright elliptical galaxies, observed with Chandra and XMM-Newton, and approximate their gravitational potentials by isothermal spheres phi(r)=v_c^2 ln(r) over a range of radii from ~0.5 to ~25 kpc. We then compare the circular speed v_c derived from X-ray data with the estimators available from optical data. In particular we discuss two simple and robust procedures for evaluating the circular speed of the galaxy using the observed optical surface brightness and the line-of-sight velocity dispersion profiles. The best fitting relation between the circular speeds derived fro…
Using Chandra X-ray observations of young, post-merger elliptical galaxies, we present X-ray characteristics of age-related observational results, by comparing with typical old elliptical galaxies in terms of metal abundances in the hot interstellar matter (ISM). While the absolute element abundances may be uncertain because of unknown systematic errors and partly because of the smaller amount of hot gas in young ellipticals, the relative abundance ratios (e.g., the alpha-element to Fe ratio, most importantly Si/Fe ratio) can be relatively well constrained. We find that in two young elliptical…
We study the stellar populations of 1,923 elliptical galaxies at z<0.05 selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey as a function of velocity dispersion, sigma, and environment. We construct average, high signal-to-noise spectra and find the following: (1) lower-sigma galaxies have a bluer optical continuum and stronger (but still weak) emission lines; (2) at fixed sigma, field ellipticals have a slightly bluer stellar continuum, especially at wavelengths \lesssim 4000 Å, and have stronger (but still weak) emission lines compared to their group counterparts, although this environmental dependen…
We investigate a physical, composite alignment model for both spiral and elliptical galaxies and its impact on cosmological parameter estimation from weak lensing for a tomographic survey. Ellipticity correlation functions and angular ellipticity spectra for spiral and elliptical galaxies are derived on the basis of tidal interactions with the cosmic large-scale structure and compared to the tomographic weak lensing signal. We find that elliptical galaxies cause a contribution to the weak-lensing dominated ellipticity correlation on intermediate angular scales between $\ell\simeq40$ and $\ell\…
