An extensive study on the potassium abundances of late-type stars was carried out by applying the non-LTE spectrum-fitting analysis to the K I resonance line at 7698.96A to a large sample of 160 FGK dwarfs and 328 late-G /early-K giants (including 89 giants in the Kepler field with seismologically known ages) belonging to the disk population (-1 < [Fe/H] < 0.5), which may provide important observational constraint on the nucleosynthesis history of K in the galactic disk. Special attention was paid to clarifying the observed behaviors of [K/Fe] in terms of [Fe/H] along with stellar age, and to checking whether giants and dwarfs yield consistent results with each other. The following results were obtained. (1) A slightly increasing tendency of [K/Fe] with a decrease in [Fe/H] (d[K/Fe]/d[Fe/H] ~ -0.1 to -0.15; a shallower slope than reported by previous studies) was confirmed for FGK dwarfs, though thick-disk stars tend to show larger [K/Fe] deviating from this gradient. (2) Almost similar characteristics was observed also for apparently bright field giants locating in the solar neighborhood (such as like dwarfs). (3) However, the [K/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] relation for more distant {\it Kepler} giants shows larger scatter and is systematically higher (by <~0.1dex) than that of dwarfs, implying that chemical evolution of K is rather diversified depending on the position in the Galaxy. (4) Regarding the age-dependence, a marginal trend of increasing [K/Fe] with age is recognized for dwarfs, while any systematic tendency is not observed for Kepler giants. These consequences may suggest that evolution of [K/Fe] with time in the galactic disk does exist but proceeded more gradually than previously thought, and its condition is appreciably location-dependent.
A non-LTE analysis of K I resonance lines at 7664.91 and 7698.97 A was carried out for 15 red giants belonging to three globular clusters of different metallicity (M 4, M 13, and M 15) along with two reference early-K giants (rho Boo and alpha Boo), in order to check whether the K abundances are uniform within a cluster and to investigate the behavior of [K/Fe] ratio at the relevant metallicity range of -2.5 <[Fe/H] < -1. We confirmed that [K/H] (as well as [Fe/H]) is almost homogeneous within each cluster to a precision of < ~0.1 dex, though dubiously large deviations are exceptionally seen f…
Extrasolar satellites are generally too small to be detected by nominal searches. By analogy to the most active body in the Solar System, Io, we describe how sodium (Na I) and potassium (K I) $\textit{gas}$ could be a signature of the geological activity venting from an otherwise hidden exo-Io. Analyzing $\sim$ a dozen close-in gas giants hosting robust alkaline detections, we show that an Io-sized satellite can be stable against orbital decay below a planetary tidal $\mathcal{Q}_p \lesssim 10^{11}$. This tidal energy is focused into the satellite driving a $\sim 10^{5 \pm 2}$ higher mass loss…
We derived Potassium abundances in red giant branch stars in the Galactic globular clusters NGC104 (144 stars), NGC6752 (134 stars) and NGC6809 (151 stars) using high-resolution spectra collected with FLAMES at the ESO - Very Large Telescope. In the considered samples we do not find significant intrinsic spreads in [K/Fe] (confirming the previous findings by Carretta et al.), at variance with the cases of the massive clusters NGC2419 and NGC2808. Additionally, marginally significant [K/Fe]-[O/Fe] anti-correlations are found in NGC104 and NGC6809, and [K/Fe]-[Na/Fe] correlations are found in NG…
Globular clusters are of paramount importance for testing theories of stellar evolution and early galaxy formation. Strong evidence for multiple populations of stars in globular clusters derives from observed abundance anomalies. A puzzling example is the recently detected Mg-K anticorrelation in NGC 2419. We perform Monte Carlo nuclear reaction network calculations to constrain the temperature-density conditions that gave rise to the elemental abundances observed in this elusive cluster. We find a correlation between stellar temperature and density values that provide a satisfactory match bet…
Among the multiple stellar populations in globular clusters (GCs) the very high-temperature H-burning regime, able to produce elements up to potassium, is still poorly explored. Here we present the first abundance analysis of K in 42 giants of NGC 6715 (M 54) with homogeneous abundances of light elements previously derived in our FLAMES survey. Owing to the large mass and low metallicity, a large excess of K could be expected in this GC, which is located in the nucleus of the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy. We actually found a spread in [K/Fe] spanning about 1 dex, with [K/Fe] presenting a significa…
Asteroseismology can make a substantial contribution to our understanding of the formation history and evolution of our Galaxy by providing precisely determined stellar properties for thousands of stars in different regions of the Milky Way. We present here the different sets of observables used in determining asteroseismic stellar properties, the typical level of precision obtained, the current status of results for ages of dwarfs and giants and the improvements than can be expected in the near future in the context of Galactic archaeology.
The mass of a star is arguably its most fundamental parameter. For red giant stars, tracers luminous enough to be observed across the Galaxy, mass implies a stellar evolution age. It has proven to be extremely difficult to infer ages and masses directly from red giant spectra using existing methods. From the KEPLER and APOGEE surveys, samples of several thousand stars exist with high-quality spectra and asteroseismic masses. Here we show that from these data we can build a data-driven spectral model using The Cannon, which can determine stellar masses to $\sim$ 0.07 dex from APOGEE DR12 spectr…
The detection of radial and non-radial solar-like oscillations in thousands of G-K giants with CoRoT and Kepler is paving the road for detailed studies of stellar populations in the Galaxy. The available average seismic constraints allow a precise and largely model-independent determination of stellar radii (hence distances) and masses. We here briefly report on the distance determination of thousands of giants in the CoRoT and Kepler fields of view.
The CoRoT and Kepler satellites have provided thousands of red-giant oscillation spectra. The analysis of these spectra requires efficient methods for identifying all eigenmode parameters. The assumption of new scaling laws allows us to construct a theoretical oscillation pattern. We then obtain a highly precise determination of the large separation by correlating the observed patterns with this reference. We demonstrate that this pattern is universal and are able to unambiguously assign the eigenmode radial orders and angular degrees. This solves one of the current outstanding problems of ast…
In this letter, we report the discovery of 24 new super Li-rich (A(Li) $\ge$ 3.2) giants of He-core burning phase at red clump region. Results are based on systematic search of a large sample of about 12,500 giants common to the LAMOST spectroscopic and Kepler time resolved photometric surveys. The two key parameters derived from Kepler data; average period spacing ($Δp$) between $l=1$ mixed gravity dominated g-modes and average large frequency separation ($Δν$) $l=0$ acoustic p-modes, suggest all the Li-rich giants are in He-core burning phase. This is the first unbiased survey subjected to a…
Measurements are presented and analyzed of the strength of the Ca II triplet lines in red giants in Galactic globular and open clusters, and in a sample of red giants in the LMC disk that have significantly different [Ca/Fe] abundance ratios to the Galactic objects. The Galactic objects are used to generate a calibration between Ca II triplet line strength and [Fe/H], which is then used to estimate [Fe/H]_CaT for the LMC stars. The values are then compared with the [Fe/H]_spec determinations from high dispersion spectroscopy. After allowance for a small systematic offset the two abundance dete…
We present the analysis of 34 light curves in $V$ and $I$ of 17 giant stars in the globular cluster NGC 3201, to check if such stars are variable and if their variability has some kind of impact on the iron abundance as obtained from spectroscopic measurements. First, we computed the Generalized Lomb-Scargle and Phase Dispersion Minimization periodograms on the sample to check if the stars were variables. In this way, 7 stars of the sample were found to be non-variable, 2 stars are considered as possible variables, and 8 stars were found to be variable, with periods ranging from $0.0881\pm0.00…
We apply the method of Burnett & Binney (2010) for the determination of stellar distances and parameters to the internal catalogue of the Radial Velocity Experiment (Steinmetz et al. 2006). Subsamples of stars that either have Hipparcos parallaxes or belong to well-studied clusters, inspire confidence in the formal errors. Distances to dwarfs cooler than ~6000 K appear to be unbiased, but those to hotter dwarfs tend to be too small by ~10% of the formal errors. Distances to giants tend to be too large by about the same amount. The median distance error in the whole sample of 216,000 stars is 2…
Non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) line formation for Ca I-Ca II, Ti I-Ti II, and Fe I-Fe II is considered in model atmospheres of giant stars with an effective temperature of 4000 K $\le$ Teff $\le$ 5000 K and a metal abundance of -4 $\le$ [Fe/H] $\le$ 0. The departures from LTE are analyzed depending on atmospheric parameters. We present the non-LTE abundance corrections for 28 lines of Ca I, 42 lines of Ti I, 54 lines of Ti II, and 262 lines of Fe I and a three-dimensional interpolation code to obtain the non-LTE correction online (http://spectrum.inasan.ru/nLTE/) for an individu…
Fundamental parameters are determined for three bright, nearby K-giants, β Gem (K0 III), μ Leo (K2 III), and α Tau (K5 III). It is notable that around all three stars the giant planets have been found. Our results are compared with published high-precision data for benchmark stars included in the Gaia project. Very good agreement was obtained for all three giants with these data for the basic parameters Teff, logg, and M. Special attention was devoted to analysis of the Fe I lines which are the basis of a simultaneous determination of the metallicity index [Fe/H] and microturbulent parameter V…
We herein determine the average integrated mass loss from stars stars belonging to the dominant metal-poor population ([Fe/H] ~ --1.7) of the Galactic globular cluster omega Centauri (NGC 5139) during their red giant and horizontal branch evolution. Masses are empirically calculated from spectroscopic measurements of surface gravity and photometric measurements of temperature and luminosity. Systematic uncertainties prevent an absolute measurement of masses at a phase of evolution. However, the relative masses of early asymptotic giant branch stars and central red giant branch stars can be mea…
The brightness of the tip of the red-giant branch (TRGB) allows one to constrain novel energy losses that would lead to a larger core mass at helium ignition and thus to a brighter TRGB than expected by standard stellar models. The required absolute TRGB calibrations strongly improve with reliable geometric distances that have become available for the galaxy NGC 4258 that hosts a water megamaser and to the Large Magellanic Cloud based on 20 detached eclipsing binaries. Moreover, we revise a previous TRGB calibration in the globular cluster $ω$ Centauri with a recent kinematical distance determ…
The Kepler satellite has provided photometric timeseries data of unprecedented length, duty cycle and precision. To fully analyse these data for the tens of thousands of stars observed by Kepler, automated methods are a prerequisite. Here we present an automated procedure to determine the period spacing of gravity modes in red-giant stars ascending the red-giant branch. The gravity modes reside in a cavity in the deep interior of the stars and provide information on the conditions in the stellar core. However, for red giants the gravity modes are not directly observable on the surface, hence t…
Determining the ages of red-giant stars is a key problem in stellar astrophysics. One of the difficulties in this determination is to know the evolutionary state of the individual stars -- i.e. have they started to burn Helium in their cores? That is the topic of this paper. Asteroseismic data provide a route to achieving this information. What we present here is an highly autonomous way of determining the evolutionary state from an analysis of the power spectrum of the light curve. The method is fast and efficient and can provide results for a large number of stars. It uses the structure of t…
We analysed red giant branch stars in 16 Galactic globular clusters, computing their atmospheric parameters both from the photometry and from excitation and ionisation balances. The spectroscopic parameters are lower than the photometric ones and this discrepancy increases decreasing the metallicity, reaching, at [Fe/H]~-2.5 dex, differences of ~350 K in effective temperature and ~1 dex in surface gravity. We demonstrate that the spectroscopic parameters are inconsistent with the position of the stars in the colour-magnitude diagram, providing too low temperatures and gravities, and predicting…
We investigate possible relations between the abundances of zinc and the light elements sodium, magnesium, and potassium in the atmospheres ofred giant branch (RGB) stars of the Galactic globular cluster 47~Tuc and study connections between the chemical composition and dynamical properties of the cluster RGB stars. The abundance of zinc was determined in 27 RGB stars of 47~Tuc using 1D local thermal equilibrium (LTE) synthetic line profile fitting to the high-resolution 2dF spectra obtained with the Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT). Synthetic spectra used in the fitting procedure were computed…
The internal working of low-mass stars is of great significance to both the study of stellar structure and the history of the Milky Way. Asteroseismology has the power to directly sense the internal structure of stars and allows for the determination of the evolutionary state -- i.e. has helium burning commenced or is the energy generated only by the fusion in the hydrogen-burning shell? We use observational data from red-giant stars in a combination (known as APOKASC) of asteroseismology (from the \textit{Kepler} mission) and spectroscopy (from SDSS/APOGEE). The new feature of the analysis is…
Since the CoRoT and Kepler missions, the availability of high quality seismic spectra for red giants has made them the standard clocks and rulers for Galactic Archeology. With the expected excellent data from the TESS and PLATO missions, red giants will again play a key role in Galactic studies and stellar physics, thanks to the precise masses and radii determined by asteroseismology. The determination of these quantities is often based on so-called scaling laws, which have been used extensively for main-sequence stars. We show how the SOLA inversion technique can provide robust determinations…
The chemical composition of stars in open clusters provides the best information on the chemical evolution of stars via comparison of the main sequence stars with the evolved giants. This is a case study of the abundances in the dwarfs and giants in the old, open cluster, NGC 752. It is also a pilot program for automated abundance determinations, including equivalent width measurements, stellar parameter determinations, and abundance analysis. We have found abundances of 31 element-ion combinations in 23 dwarfs and 6 giants. The mean cluster abundance of Fe is solar with [Fe/H]$=-0.01\pm0.06$ …
The study of stellar parameters of planet-hosting stars, such as metallicity and chemical abundances, help us to understand the theory of planet formation and stellar evolution. Here, we present a catalogue of accurate stellar atmospheric parameters and iron abundances for a sample of 257 K and G field evolved stars that are being surveyed for planets using precise radial--velocity measurements as part of the CORALIE programme to search for planets around giants. The analysis was done using a set of high--resolution and high--signal-to-noise Ultraviolet and Visible Echelle Spectrograph spectra…
Capella is a spectroscopic binary consisting of two G-type giants, where the primary (G8III) is a normal red-clump giant while the secondary (G0III) is a chromospherically-active fast rotator showing considerable overabundance of Li as Li-enhanced giants. Recently, Takeda & Tajitsu (2017) reported that abundance ratios of specific light elements (e.g., [C/Fe] or [O/Fe]) in Li-rich giants of high activity tend to be anomalously high, which they suspected to be nothing but superficial caused by unusual atmospheric structure due to high activity. Towards verifying this hypothesis, we determined t…
The cornerstone mission Gaia, together with complementary surveys, will revolutionize our understanding of the formation and history of our Galaxy, providing accurate stellar masses, radii, ages, distances, as well as chemical properties for a very large sample of stars across different Galactic stellar populations.Using an improved population synthesis approach and new stellar evolution models we attempt to evaluate the possibility of deriving ages and masses of clump stars from their chemical properties.A new version of the Besancon Galaxy model (BGM) uses new stellar evolutionary tracks com…
Giant stars, and especially C-rich giants, contribute significantly to the chemical enrichment of galaxies. The determination of precise parameters for these stars is a necessary prerequisite for a proper implementation of this evolutionary phase in the models of galaxies. Infrared interferometry opened new horizons in the study of the stellar parameters of giant stars, and provided new important constraints for the atmospheric and evolutionary models. We aim to determine which stellar parameters can be constrained by using infrared interferometry and spectroscopy, in the case of C-stars what i…
We present colour transformations from Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) photometric system to Johnson-Cousins system and to Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) system for late-type giants and vice versa. The giant star sample was formed using surface gravity constraints ($2 < \log g \leq 3$) to Cayrel de Strobel et al.\rq s (2001) spectroscopic catalogue. 2MASS, SDSS and Johnson-Cousins photometric data was taken from Cutri et al. (2003), Ofek (2008) and van Leeuwen (2007), respectively. The final sample was refined applying the following steps: (1) the data were dereddened, (2) the sample stars …
Asteroseismic investigations based on the wealth of data now available,in particular from the CoRoT and Kepler missions, require a good understanding of the relation between the observed quantities and the properties of the underlying stellar structure. Kallinger et al. 2012 found a relation between their determination of the asymptotic phase of radial oscillations in evolved stars and the evolutionary state, separating ascending-branch red giants from helium-burning stars in the `red clump'. Here we provide a detailed analysis of this relation, which is found to derive from differences betwee…
A grid of evolutionary sequences of stars in the mass range $1.2$-$7$ M$_{\odot}$, with solar-like initial composition is presented. We focus on this mass range in order to estimate the masses and calculate the CNO surface abundances of a sample of observed red giants. The stellar models are calculated from the zero-age main sequence till the early asymptotic giant branch (AGB) phase. Stars of M $\leqslant$ $2.2$M$_{\odot}$ are evolved through the core helium flash. In this work, an approach is adopted that improves the mass determination of an observed sample of 21 RGB and early AGB stars. Th…
We have analysed high-dispersion echelle spectra ($R = 60000$) of red giant members of five open clusters to derive abundances for many elements from Na to Eu. The [Fe/H] values are $-0.06\pm0.03$ for Stock 2, $-0.11\pm0.03$ for NGC 2168, $-0.01\pm0.03$ for NGC 6475, $0.00\pm0.03$ for NGC 6991 and $-0.07\pm0.03$ for NGC 7662. Sodium is enriched in the giants relative to the abundance expected of main sequence stars of the same metallicity. This enrichment of [Na/Fe] by about $+0.25$ attributed to the first dredge-up is discussed in the light of theoretical predictions and recently published ab…
Thanks to the recent very high-precision photometry of red giants from satellites such as Kepler, precise mass and radius values as well as accurate information of evolutionary stages are already established by asteroseismic approach for a large number of G-K giants. Based on the high-dispersion spectra of selected such 55 red giants in the Kepler field with precisely known seismic parameters (among which parallaxes are available for 9 stars), we checked the accuracy of the determination method of stellar parameters previously applied to many red giants by Takeda et al. (2008, PASJ, 60, 781), …
The determination of Li and proton-capture element abundances in globular cluster (GC) giants allows us to constrain several key questions on the multiple population scenarios in GCs, from formation and early evolution, to pollution and dilution mechanisms. In this Letter, we present our results on Li abundances for a large sample of giants in the intermediate-metallicity GC NGC 6121 (M4), for which Na and O have been already determined by Marino et al. The stars analyzed are both below and above the red giant branch bump luminosity. We found that the first and second generation stars share th…
Water clouds are expected to form on Y dwarfs and giant planets with equilibrium temperatures near or below that of Earth, drastically altering their atmospheric compositions and their albedos and thermal emission spectra. Here we use the 1D Community Aerosol and Radiation Model for Atmospheres (CARMA) to investigate the microphysics of water clouds on cool substellar worlds to constrain their typical particle sizes and vertical extent, taking into consideration nucleation and condensation, which have not been considered in detail for water clouds in H/He atmospheres. We compute a small grid o…
Large spectroscopic surveys of the Milky Way need to be calibrated against a sample of benchmark stars to ensure the reliable determination of atmospheric parameters. We present new fundamental stellar parameters of seven giant and subgiant stars that will serve as benchmarks. The aim is to reach a precision of 1% in the effective temperature. This precision is essential for accurate determinations of the full set of fundamental parameters and abundances of stars observed by the surveys. We observed HD121370 (etaBoo), HD161797 (muHer), HD175955, HD182736, HD185351, HD188512 (betaAql), and HD18…
We present results of high resolution (~ 55000) spectral observations of 830 photometrically pre-selected candidate red giants in the magnitude range of V = 9-12. We develop a pipeline for automated determination of the stellar atmospheric parameters from these spectra and estimate T_eff, logg, [Fe/H], microturbulence velocity, and projected rotational velocities, vsini, for the stars. The analysis confirms that the candidate selection procedure yielded red giants with very high success rate. We show that most of these stars are G and K giants with slightly subsolar metallicity ([Fe/H] ~ -0.3 …
Masses of classical Cepheids of 3 to 11 M$\odot$ are predicted by theory but those measured, clump between 3.6 and 5 M$\odot$. As a result, their mass-luminosity relation is poorly constrained, impeding our understanding of basic stellar physics and the Leavitt Law. All Cepheid masses come from the analysis of 11 binary systems, including only 5 double-lined and well-suited for accurate dynamical mass determination. We present a project to analyze a new, numerous group of Cepheids in double-lined binary (SB2) systems to provide mass determinations in a wide mass interval and study their evolut…
Oxygen is a powerful tracer element of Galactic chemical evolution. Unfortunately, only a few oxygen lines are available in the ultraviolet-infrared stellar spectra for the reliable determination of its abundance. Moreover, oxygen abundances obtained using different spectral lines often disagree significantly. In this contribution we therefore investigate whether the inadequate treatment of convection in 1D hydrostatic model atmospheres used in the abundance determinations may be responsible for this disagreement. For this purpose, we used VLT CRIRES spectra of three EMP giants, as well as 3D …
We investigate departures from local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) in the line formation of neutral and singly ionised iron lines and their impact on spectroscopic stellar parameters. The calculations are performed for an extensive grid of 1D MARCS models of metal-rich and metal-poor late-type dwarfs and giants. We find that iron abundances derived from FeI lines are increasingly underestimated in hotter, lower surface-gravity, and more metal-poor stars, in a simple and well-defined pattern, while LTE is usually a realistic approximation for FeII lines. For the vast majority of dwarfs and g…
Improving the stellar age determination through joint modeling of binarity and asteroseismology -- Grid modeling of the seismic red-giant binary KIC 9163796
Red-giant stars are emerging as one of the most interesting areas of space asteroseismology. Even a relatively basic analysis leads to the determination of the global parameters of the stars, such as their mass and radius, and the very extensive space-based data now available for a large number of stars allow detailed investigation of the deep interiors of red giants, including distinguishing between stars that do and do not have helium fusion in the core, on the basis of periods of gravity waves partially trapped in the core. Here I review the theoretical background for these new developments…
We propose to measure the radii of the Penn State - Torun Planet Search (PTPS) exoplanet host star candidates using the CHARA Array. Stellar radii estimated from spectroscopic analysis are usually inaccurate due to indirect nature of the method and strong evolutionary model dependency. Also the so-called degeneracy of stellar evolutionary tracks due to convergence of many tracks in the giant branch decreases the precision of such estimates. However, the radius of a star is a critical parameter for the calculation of stellar luminosity and mass, which are often not well known especially for gia…
We have analyzed the double-lined eclipsing binary system OGLE-051019.64-685812.3 in the LMC which consists of two G4 giant components with very similar effective temperatures. A detailed analysis of the OGLE I-band light curve of the system, radial velocity curves for both components derived from high-resolution spectra, and near-infrared magnitudes of the binary system measured outside the eclipses has allowed us to obtain an accurate orbit solution for this eclipsing binary, and its fundamental physical parameters. Using a surface brightness-(V-K) color relation for giant stars we have calc…
We follow the scenario of formation of second generation stars in globular clusters by matter processed by hot bottom burning (HBB) in massive asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars and Super AGB stars (SAGB). In the cluster NGC 2419 we assume the presence of an extreme population directly formed from the AGB and SAGB ejecta, so we can directly compare the yields for a metallicity Z=0.0003 with the chemical inventory of the cluster NGC 2419. At such a low metallicity, the HBB temperatures (well above 108K) allow a very advanced nucleosynthesis. Masses of about 6Mo deplete Mg and synthesize Si, go…
The dominant systematic uncertainty in the age determination of galactic globular clusters is the depth of the convection envelope of the stars. This parameter is partially degenerate with metallicity which is in turn degenerate with age. However, if the metal content, distance and extinction are known, the position and morphology of the red giant branch in a color-magnitude diagram are mostly sensitive to the value of the depth of the convective envelope. Therefore, using external, precise metallicity determinations this degeneracy and thus the systematic error in age, can be reduced. Alterna…
In the context of the determination of stellar properties using asteroseismology, we study the influence of rotation and convective-core overshooting on the properties of red-giant stars. We used models in order to investigate the effects of these mechanisms on the asymptotic period spacing of gravity modes ($ΔΠ_1$) of red-giant stars that ignite He burning in degenerate conditions (M$\lesssim$2.0 M$_{\odot}$). We also compare the predictions of these models with Kepler observations. For a given $Δν$, $ΔΠ_1$ depends not only on the stellar mass, but also on mixing processes that can affect the…
We present a new determination of the solar fluorine abundance together with abundance measurements of fluorine in two Galactic open clusters. We analyzed a sunspot spectrum, observed by L. Wallace and W. Livingston with the FTS at the McMath/Pierce Solar Telescope situated on Kitt Peak and spectra of four giants in the old cluster M 67 ($\sim$4.5 Gyr) and three giants in the young cluster NGC 6404 ($\sim$0.5 Gyr), obtained with the CRIRES spectrograph at VLT. Fluorine was measured through synthesis of the available HF lines. We adopted the recent set of experimental molecular parameters of HF…
We carried out a Bayesian homogeneous determination of the orbital parameters of 231 transiting giant planets (TGPs) that are alone or have distant companions; we employed DE-MCMC methods to analyse radial-velocity (RV) data from the literature and 782 new high-accuracy RVs obtained with the HARPS-N spectrograph for 45 systems over 3 years. Our work yields the largest sample of systems with a transiting giant exoplanet and coherently determined orbital, planetary, and stellar parameters. We found that the orbital parameters of TGPs in non-compact planetary systems are clearly shaped by tides r…
The Gaia-ESO survey recently reported on a large sample of lithium (Li) abundance determinations for evolved stars in the rich open cluster Trumpler 20. They argue for a scenario where virtually all stars experience post main sequence mixing and Li is preserved in only two objects. We present an alternate explanation, where Li is normal in the vast majority of cluster stars and anomalously high in these two cases. We demonstrate that the Li upper limits in the red giants can be explained with a combination of main sequence depletion and standard dredge-up, and that they are close to the detect…
I will review our recent analysis of the magnetic properties of the O9IV star HD 57682, using spectropolarimetric observations obtained with ESPaDOnS at the Canada-France-Hawaii telescope within the context of the Magnetism in Massive Stars (MiMeS) Large Program. I discuss our most recent determination of the rotational period from longitudinal magnetic field measurements and Halpha variability - the latter obtained from over a decade's worth of professional and amateur spectroscopic observations. Lastly, I will report on our investigation of the magnetic field geometry and the effects of the …
We present new measurements of the magnitude of the main sequence turn off and the red giant branch bump in the luminosity function of a sample of Galactic globular clusters with updated estimates of [Fe/H] and [$α$/Fe], employing photometric data collected with the Advanced Camera for Survey on board the HST. We compare measured and predicted values of the magnitude difference between these two features, a rarely employed diagnostic of the internal structure of low-mass stars at the beginning of their red giant evolution. Our analysis discloses a clear discrepancy between theory and observati…
Modelling ellipsoidal variables with known distances can lead to exact determination of the masses of both components, even in the absence of eclipses. We present such modelling using light and radial velocity curves of ellipsoidal red giant binaries in the LMC, where they are also known as sequence E stars. Stars were selected as likely eccentric systems on the basis of light curve shape alone. We have confirmed their eccentric nature and obtained system parameters using the Wilson-Devinney code. Most stars in our sample exhibit unequal light maxima as well as minima, a phenomenon not observe…
We present an analysis of Li abundances in low mass stars (LMS) during the Red Giant Branch (RGB) and Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stages, based on a new determination of their luminosities and evolutionary status. By applying recently suggested models for extra-mixing, induced by magnetic buoyancy, we show that both Li-rich and Li-poor stars can be accounted for. The simplest scenario implies the development of fast instabilities on the RGB, where Li is produced. When the fields increase in strength, buoyancy slows down and Li is destroyed. 3He is consumed, at variable rates. The process con…
The frequency of maximum oscillation power measured in dwarfs and giants exhibiting solar-like pulsations provides a precise, and potentially accurate, inference of the stellar surface gravity. An extensive comparison for about 40 well-studied pulsating stars with gravities derived using classical methods (ionisation balance, pressure-sensitive spectral features or location with respect to evolutionary tracks) supports the validity of this technique and reveals an overall remarkable agreement with mean differences not exceeding 0.05 dex (although with a dispersion of up to ~0.2 dex). It is arg…
