A non-LTE analysis of K I resonance lines at 7664.91 and 7698.97 A was carried out for 15 red giants belonging to three globular clusters of different metallicity (M 4, M 13, and M 15) along with two reference early-K giants (rho Boo and alpha Boo), in order to check whether the K abundances are uniform within a cluster and to investigate the behavior of [K/Fe] ratio at the relevant metallicity range of -2.5 <[Fe/H] < -1. We confirmed that [K/H] (as well as [Fe/H]) is almost homogeneous within each cluster to a precision of < ~0.1 dex, though dubiously large deviations are exceptionally seen for two peculiar stars showing signs of considerably increased turbulence in the upper atmosphere. The resulting [K/Fe] ratios are mildly supersolar by a few tenths of dex for three clusters, tending to gradually increase from ~+0.1-0.2 at [Fe/H] ~-1 to ~+0.3 at [Fe/H] ~ -2.5. This result connects reasonably well with the [K/Fe] trend of disk stars (-1 < [Fe/H]) and that of extremely metal-poor stars (-4 <[Fe/H] < -2.5). That is, [K/Fe] appears to continue a gradual increase from [Fe/H]~0 toward a lower metallicity regime down to [Fe/H]~-3, where a broad maximum of [K/Fe]~+0.3-0.4 is attained, possibly followed by a slight downturn at [Fe/H]<~-3.
We derive [K/Fe] abundance ratios for 119 stars in the globular cluster NGC 2808, all of them having O, Na, Mg and Al abundances homogeneously measured in previous works. We detect an intrinsic star-to-star spread in the Potassium abundance. Moreover [K/Fe] abundance ratios display statistically significant correlations with [Na/Fe] and [Al/Fe], and anti-correlations with [O/Fe] and [Mg/Fe]. All the four Mg deficient stars ([Mg/Fe]<0.0) discovered so far in NGC 2808 are enriched in K by ~0.3 dex with respect to those with normal [Mg/Fe]. NGC 2808 is the second globular cluster, after NGC 2419,…
We derived Potassium abundances in red giant branch stars in the Galactic globular clusters NGC104 (144 stars), NGC6752 (134 stars) and NGC6809 (151 stars) using high-resolution spectra collected with FLAMES at the ESO - Very Large Telescope. In the considered samples we do not find significant intrinsic spreads in [K/Fe] (confirming the previous findings by Carretta et al.), at variance with the cases of the massive clusters NGC2419 and NGC2808. Additionally, marginally significant [K/Fe]-[O/Fe] anti-correlations are found in NGC104 and NGC6809, and [K/Fe]-[Na/Fe] correlations are found in NG…
Among the multiple stellar populations in globular clusters (GCs) the very high-temperature H-burning regime, able to produce elements up to potassium, is still poorly explored. Here we present the first abundance analysis of K in 42 giants of NGC 6715 (M 54) with homogeneous abundances of light elements previously derived in our FLAMES survey. Owing to the large mass and low metallicity, a large excess of K could be expected in this GC, which is located in the nucleus of the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy. We actually found a spread in [K/Fe] spanning about 1 dex, with [K/Fe] presenting a significa…
NGC 4833 is a metal-poor Galactic globular cluster (GC) whose multiple stellar populations present an extreme chemical composition. The Na-O anti-correlation is quite extended, which is in agreement with the long tail on the blue horizontal branch, and the large star-to-star variations in the [Mg/Fe] ratio span more than 0.5 dex. Recently, significant excesses of Ca and Sc with respect to field stars of a similar metallicity were also found, signaling the production of species forged in H-burning at a very high temperature in the polluters of the first generation in this cluster. Since an enha…
Globular clusters are of paramount importance for testing theories of stellar evolution and early galaxy formation. Strong evidence for multiple populations of stars in globular clusters derives from observed abundance anomalies. A puzzling example is the recently detected Mg-K anticorrelation in NGC 2419. We perform Monte Carlo nuclear reaction network calculations to constrain the temperature-density conditions that gave rise to the elemental abundances observed in this elusive cluster. We find a correlation between stellar temperature and density values that provide a satisfactory match bet…
The abundances of alkali elements (Li, Na, and K) were determined from the Li I 6708, Na I 5682/5688, and K I 7699 lines by taking into account the non-LTE effect for 24 sharp-lined A-type stars v sin i < 50 km/s, 7000 K < Teff <10000 K, many showing Am peculiarities to different degrees), based on high-dispersion and high-S/N spectral data secured at BOAO (Korea) and OAO (Japan). We found a significant trend that A(Na) tightly scales with A(Fe) irrespective of Teff, which means that Na becomes enriched similarly to Fe in accordance with the degree of Am peculiarity. Regarding lithium, A(Li) m…
The magnesium-potassium anti-correlation observed in globular cluster NGC2419 can be explained by nuclear burning of hydrogen in hot environments. The exact site of this nuclear burning is, as yet, unknown. In order to constrain the sites responsible for this anti-correlation, the nuclear reactions involved must be well understood. The $^{39}$K+p reactions are one such pair of reactions. Here, we report a new evaluation of the $^{39}$K(p,$γ$)$^{40}$Ca reaction rate by taking into account ambiguities and measurement uncertainties in the nuclear data. The uncertainty in the $^{39}$K(p,$γ$)$^{40}…
Detailed chemical abundances of two stars in the intermediate-age Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) globular cluster NGC~1718 are presented, based on high resolution spectroscopic observations with the MIKE spectrograph. The detailed abundances confirm NGC~1718 to be a fairly metal-rich cluster, with an average [Fe/H] ~ -0.55+/-0.01. The two red giants appear to have primordial O, Na, Mg, and Al abundances, with no convincing signs of a composition difference between the two stars---hence, based on these two stars, NGC~1718 shows no evidence for hosting multiple populations. The Mg abundance is low…
We follow the scenario of formation of second generation stars in globular clusters by matter processed by hot bottom burning (HBB) in massive asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars and Super AGB stars (SAGB). In the cluster NGC 2419 we assume the presence of an extreme population directly formed from the AGB and SAGB ejecta, so we can directly compare the yields for a metallicity Z=0.0003 with the chemical inventory of the cluster NGC 2419. At such a low metallicity, the HBB temperatures (well above 108K) allow a very advanced nucleosynthesis. Masses of about 6Mo deplete Mg and synthesize Si, go…
We investigate possible relations between the abundances of zinc and the light elements sodium, magnesium, and potassium in the atmospheres ofred giant branch (RGB) stars of the Galactic globular cluster 47~Tuc and study connections between the chemical composition and dynamical properties of the cluster RGB stars. The abundance of zinc was determined in 27 RGB stars of 47~Tuc using 1D local thermal equilibrium (LTE) synthetic line profile fitting to the high-resolution 2dF spectra obtained with the Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT). Synthetic spectra used in the fitting procedure were computed…
High-resolution optical spectra are analyzed for two of the four metal rich mildly hydrogen-poor or helium-enhanced giants discovered by Hema and Pandey (2014) along with their comparison normal (hydrogen-rich) giants of Omega Cen. The strengths of the MgH bands in the spectra of the program stars are analyzed for their derived stellar parameters. The observed spectra of the sample (hydrogen-poor) stars (LEID 39048 and LEID 34225) show weaker MgH bands unlike in the spectra of the normal comparison giants (LEID 61067 and LEID 32169). The magnesium abundance derived from MgH bands is less by 0.…
We have completed sensitive searches for new pulsars in seven globular clusters using the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope, and have discovered six new recycled pulsars (four in NGC 6517 and two in M22), five of which are fully recycled millisecond pulsars with P < 10 ms. We report full timing solutions for all six new pulsars and provide estimates of their flux densities and spectral indices. None of the pulsars are detected in archival Chandra data down to L_X~10^32 erg/s for NGC 6517 and L_X~10^31 erg/s for M22. One of the millisecond pulsars in M22 appears to have a very low mass compan…
We present a model for the concurrent formation of globular clusters (GCs) and supermassive stars (SMSs, $>10^3\,{\rm M}_\odot$) to address the origin of the HeCNONaMgAl abundance anomalies in GCs. GCs form in converging gas flows and accumulate low-angular momentum gas, which accretes onto protostars. This leads to an adiabatic contraction of the cluster and an increase of the stellar collision rate. A SMS can form via runaway collisions if the cluster reaches sufficiently high density before two-body relaxation halts the contraction. This condition is met if the number of stars $\gtrsim10^6$…
Disentangling distinct stellar populations along the red-giant branches (RGBs) of Globular Clusters (GCs) is possible by using the pseudo two-color diagram dubbed chromosome map (ChM). One of the most intriguing findings is that the so-called first-generation (1G) stars, characterized by the same chemical composition of their natal cloud, exhibit extended sequences in the ChM. Unresolved binaries and internal variations in helium or metallicity have been suggested to explain this phenomenon. Here, we derive high-precision Hubble Space Telescope photometry of the GCs NGC6362 and NGC6838 and bui…

We observe two metal-poor main sequence stars that are members of the recently-discovered Sylgr stellar stream. We present radial velocities, stellar parameters, and abundances for 13 elements derived from high-resolution optical spectra collected using the Magellan Inamori Kyocera Echelle spectrograph. The two stars have identical compositions (within 0.13 dex or 1.2 sigma) among all elements detected. Both stars are very metal poor ([Fe/H] = -2.92 +/- 0.06). Neither star is highly enhanced in C ([C/Fe] < +1.0). Both stars are enhanced in the alpha elements Mg, Si, and Ca ([alpha/Fe] = +0.32 …
Stars with unusual elemental abundances offer clues about rare astrophysical events or nucleosynthetic pathways. Stars with significantly depleted magnesium and enhanced potassium ([Mg/Fe] < -0.5; [K/Fe] > 1) have to date only been found in the massive globular cluster NGC 2419 and, to a lesser extent, NGC 2808. The origin of this abundance signature remains unknown, as does the reason for its apparent exclusivity to these two globular clusters. Here we present 112 field stars, identified from 454,180 LAMOST giants, that show significantly enhanced [K/Fe] and possibly depleted [Mg/Fe] abundanc…
Abundances relative to iron for carbon, nitrogen, strontium and barium are presented for 33 stars on the red giant branch of the globular cluster omega Centauri. They are based on intermediate-resolution spectroscopic data covering the blue spectral region analyzed using spectrum synthesis techniques. The data reveal the existence of a broad range in the abundances of these elements, and a comparison with similar data for main sequence stars enables insight into the evolutionary history of the cluster. The majority of the red giant branch stars were found to be depleted in carbon, i.e. [C/Fe]<…
