The effect of nucleon dressing by pions, on the binding energy of three nucleons interacting via two-body forces, is calculated for the first time within a conventional nuclear physics approach. It is found that the dressing increases the binding energy of the triton by an amount approximately in the range from 0.3 MeV to 0.9 MeV, depending on the model used for dressing. This suggests that nucleon dressing may help explain the underestimation of the triton binding energy in previous calculations using only two-nucleon forces.
The three-nucleon bound state problem is studied employing a nucleon-nucleon potential obtained from a basic quark-quark interaction in a five-channel Faddeev calculation. The obtained triton binding energy is comparable to those predicted by conventional models of the $NN$ force.
The influence of relativity on the triton binding energy is investigated. The relativistic three-dimensional version of the Bethe-Salpeter equation proposed by Blankenbecler and Sugar (BbS) is used. Relativistic (non-separable) one-boson-exchange potentials (constructed in the BbS framework) are employed for the two-nucleon interaction. In a 34-channel Faddeev calculation, it is found that relativistic effects increase the triton binding energy by about 0.2 MeV. Including charge-dependence (besides relativity), the final triton binding energy predictions are 8.33 and 8.16 MeV for the Bonn A an…
For relativistic three-body calculations, essentially two different approaches are in use: field theory and relativistic direct interactions. Results for relativistic corrections of the triton binding energy obtained from the two approaches differ even in their sign, which is rather puzzling. In this paper, we discuss the origin of such discrepancy. We show that the use of an invariant two-body amplitude, as done in the field-theoretic approach, increases the triton binding energy by about 0.30 MeV. This may explain a large part of the discrepancy.
First results for the triton binding energy obtained from the relativistic spectator or Gross equation are reported. The Dirac structure of the nucleons is taken into account. Numerical results are presented for a family of realistic OBE models with off-shell scalar couplings. It is shown that these off-shell couplings improve both the fits to the two-body data and the predictions for the binding energy.
We consider the correlation between the binding energies of the triton and the alpha-particle which is empirically observed in calculations employing different phenomenological nucleon-nucleon interactions. Using an effective quantum mechanics approach for short-range interactions with large scattering length |a| >> l, where l is the natural low-energy length scale, we construct the effective interaction potential at leading order in l/|a|. In order to renormalize the four-nucleon system, it is sufficient to include a SU(4)-symmetric one-parameter three-nucleon interaction in addition to the S…
The influence of the partial-wave states with nonzero orbital moment of the nucleon pair on the binding energy of the triton in the relativistic case is considered. The relativistic generalization of the Faddeev equation in the Bethe-Salpeter formalism is applied. Two-nucleon t matrix is obtained from the Bethe-Salpeter equation with separable kernel of nucleon-nucleon interaction of the rank one. The kernel form factors are the relativistic type of the Yamaguchi functions. The following two-nucleon partial-wave states are considered: $^1S_0$, $^3S_1$, $^3D_1$, $^3P_0$, $^1P_1$, $^3P_1$. The s…
Previously we calculated the binding energies of the triton and hypertriton, using an SU_6 quark-model interaction derived from a resonating-group method of two baryon clusters. In contrast to the previous calculations employing the energy-dependent interaction kernel, we present new results using a renormalized interaction, which is now energy independent and reserves all the two-baryon data. The new binding energies are slightly smaller than the previous values. In particular the triton binding energy turns out to be 8.14 MeV with a charge-dependence correction of the two-nucleon force, 190 …
We present high precision benchmark calculations for the triton binding energy using the most recent, phase equivalent realistic nucleon-nucleon (NN) potentials and the Tuscon-Melbourne pi-pi three-nucleon force (3NF). That 3NF is included with partial waves up to a total two-body angular momentum of j_max=6. It is shown that the inclusion of the 3NF slows down the convergence in the partial waves and j_max=5 is needed in order to achieve converged results within a few keV. We adjust the cut-off parameter Lambda in the form factors of the Tuscon-Melbourne 3NF separately for the different NN po…
We compute the binding energy of triton with realistic statistical errors stemming from NN scattering data uncertainties and the deuteron and obtain $E_t=-7.638(15) \, {\rm MeV}$. Setting the numerical precision as $ΔE_t^{\rm num} \lesssim 1 \, {\rm keV}$ we obtain the statistical error $ΔE_t^{\rm stat}= 15(1) \, {\rm keV}$ which is mainly determined by the channels involving relative S-waves. This figure reflects the uncertainty of the input NN data, more than two orders of magnitude larger than the experimental precision $ΔE_t^{\rm exp}= 0.1 \, {\rm keV}$ and provides a bottleneck in the rea…
The phase equivalent relativistic NN potential, which is related by a nonlinear equation to the original nonrelativistic potential, is used to construct the mass operator (rest Hamiltonian) of the 3-nucleon system. Employing the CD Bonn NN potential, the solution of the relativistic 3N Faddeev equation for $^3$H shows slightly less binding energy than the corresponding nonrelativistic result. The effect of the Wigner spin rotation on the binding is very small.
We report 3H binding energy calculations using inversion potentials generated from phase shifts corresponding to contemporary nucleon-nucleon potentials as well as modern phase shift analyses. We place limits upon local potential triton binding energy calculations due to the underlying uncertainties in their fit to the nucleon-nucleon phase shifts: 7.7 +/- 0.2 MeV. We explore the role of the nonlocality of momentum dependent potentials in the triton binding energy. In particular, we find the additional binding energy in the case of the Bonn-B potential is due to a long range nonlocality, which…
The NONLOCAL Bonn-B potential predicts 8.0 MeV binding energy for the triton (in a charge-dependent 34-channel Faddeev calculation) which is about 0.4 MeV more than the predictions by LOCAL NN potentials. We pin down origin and size of the nonlocality in the Bonn potential, in analytic and numeric form. The nonlocality is due to the use of the correct off-shell Feynman amplitude of one-boson-exchange avoiding the commonly used on-shell approximations which yield the local potentials. We also illustrate how this off-shell behavior leads to more binding energy. We emphasize that the increased bi…
As an application of the new realistic three-dimensional (3D) formalism reported recently for three-nucleon (3N) bound states, an attempt is made to study the effect of three-nucleon forces (3NFs) in triton binding energy in a non partial wave (PW) approach. The spin-isospin dependent 3N Faddeev integral equations with the inclusion of 3NFs, which are formulated as function of vector Jacobi momenta, specifically the magnitudes of the momenta and the angle between them, are solved with Bonn-B and Tucson-Melbourne NN and 3N forces in operator forms which can be incorporated in our 3D formalism. …
The three-nucleon bound state problem is studied employing nucleon-nucleon potentials derived from a basic quark-quark interaction. We analyze the effects of the nonlocalities generated by the quark model. The calculated triton binding energies indicate that quark-model nonlocalities can yield additional binding in the order of few hundred keV.
We consider the three-nucleon system within an effective theory with contact interactions at leading order in the large scattering length. We calculate the charge form factor of the triton at low momentum transfer and extract the triton charge radius. At this order, no two-body currents contribute and the calculation can be performed in the impulse approximation. We also comment on the power counting for higher orders. The requirement of a three-body force for renormalization of the three-nucleon system explains the previously observed correlation between the triton binding energy and charge r…
The Faddeev equations are solved in momentum space for the trinucleon bound state with the new Tucson-Melbourne $π$ and $ρ$ exchange three-nucleon potentials. The three-nucleon potentials are combined with a variety of realistic two-nucleon potentials. The dependence of the triton binding energy on the $πNN$ cut-off parameter in the three-nucleon potentials is studied and found to be reduced compared to the case with pure $π$ exchange. The $ρ$ exchange parts of the three-nucleon potential yield an overall repulsive effect. When the recommended parameters are employed, the calculated triton bin…
Properties of the three-nucleon bound state are examined in the Faddeev formalism, in which the quark-model nucleon-nucleon interaction is explicitly incorporated to calculate the off-shell T-matrix. The most recent version, fss2, of the Kyoto-Niigata quark-model potential yields the ground-state energy ^3H=-8.514 MeV in the 34 channel calculation, when the np interaction is used for the nucleon-nucleon interaction. The charge root mean square radii of the ^3H and ^3He are 1.72 fm and 1.90 fm, respectively, including the finite size correction of the nucleons. These values are the closest to t…
Understanding the volume dependence of the triton binding energy is an important step towards lattice simulations of light nuclei. We calculate the triton binding energy in a finite cubic box with periodic boundary conditions to leading order in the pionless effective field theory. Higher order corrections are estimated and the proper renormalization of our results is verified explicitly. We present results for the physical triton as well as for the pion-mass dependence of the triton spectrum near the ``critical'' pion mass, Mpi_c ~ 197 MeV, where chiral effective field theory suggests that th…
We examine the regularized zero-range model in an application to three-fermion systems -- the triton and the hypertriton. We consider bound states and low-energy neutron-deuteron and lambda-deuteron scattering. The model is shown to provide an adequate quantitative description of these system on a par with finite-range potential models. The well known correlation between the doublet $nd$ scattering length and the triton binding energy (Phillips line) finds a natural explanation within the model.
Model-independent constraints for the neutron-triton and proton-Helium-3 scattering lengths are calculated with a leading-order interaction derived from an effective field theory without explicit pions. Using the singlet neutron-proton scattering length, the deuteron, and the triton binding energy as input, the predictions $\ants=9.2\pm2.6 $fm, $\antt=7.6\pm1.6 $fm, $\aphes=3.6\pm0.32 $fm, and $\aphet=3.1\pm 0.23 $fm are obtained. The calculations employ the resonating group method and include the Coulomb interaction when appropriate. The theoretical uncertainty is assessed via a variation of …
The quality of two different separable expansion methods ({\sl W} matrix and Ernst-Shakin-Thaler) is investigated. We compare the triton binding energies and components of the triton wave functions obtained in this way with the results of a direct two-dimensional treatment. The Paris, Bonn {\sl A} and Bonn {\sl B} potentials are employed as underlying two-body interactions, their total angular momenta being incorporated up to $j \leq 2$. It is found that the most accurate results based on the Ernst-Shakin-Thaler method agree within 1.5% or better with the two-dimensional calculations, whereas …
Triton properties are calculated using new nucleon-nucleon potentials, which were fit to the world nucleon-nucleon data. All potentials are charge dependent and explicitly incorporate the mass difference between the charged and neutral pions. Three of these models have a nearly optimal chi**2 per degree of freedom and can therefore be considered as alternative partial wave analyses, which in quality can almost compete with the Nijmegen partial-wave analysis. The triton binding energy obtained with three local models (Nijm II, Reid93, AV18) can be summarized as 7.62 +_ 0.01 MeV, which is nearly…
The well-known correlations of low-energy three and four-nucleon observables with a typical three-nucleon scale (e.g., the Tjon line) is extended to light nuclei and nuclear matter. Evidence for the scaling between light nuclei binding energies and the triton one are pointed out. We argue that the saturation energy and density of nuclear matter are correlated to the triton binding energy. The available systematic nuclear matter calculations indicate a possible band structure representing these correlations.
Long-range contributions to the three-nucleon force that have been recently worked out in chiral effective field theory at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order are for the first time included in the triton and the doublet nucleon-deuteron scattering length calculations. The strengths of the two short-range terms available at this order in the chiral expansion are determined from the triton binding energy and the neutron-deuteron doublet scattering length. The structure of the resulting three-nucleon force is explored and effects for the two-nucleon correlation function in the triton are inves…
Determination of the proper power-counting scheme is an important issue for the systematic application of Chiral Effective Field Theory in nuclear physics. We analyze the cutoff dependence of three-nucleon observables (the neutron-deuteron scattering lengths and the triton binding energy) at the leading and next-to-leading orders of a power counting that ensures order-by-order renormalization in the two-nucleon system. Our results imply that three-body forces are not needed for renormalization of the three-nucleon system up to next-to-leading order, as usually assumed in the literature. (Errat…
An effective field theory is used to describe light nuclei, calculated from quantum chromodynamics on a lattice at unphysically large pion masses. The theory is calibrated at leading order to two available data sets on two- and three-body nuclei for two pion masses. At those pion masses we predict the quartet and doublet neutron-deuteron scattering lengths, and the alpha-particle binding energy. For $m_π=510~$MeV we obtain, respectively, $^4a_{\rm nD}=2.3\pm 1.3~$fm, $^2a_{\rm nD}=2.2\pm 2.1~$fm, and $B_α^{}=35\pm 22~$MeV, while for $m_π=805~$MeV $^4a_{\rm nD}=1.6\pm 1.3~$fm, $^2a_{\rm nD}=0.6…
We discuss a self-consistent method to calculate the properties of cold asymmetric nuclear matter which is dressed with isoscalar scalar pion condensates. The nucleon-nucleon interaction is mediated by these pion pairs, omega- and rho- mesons. The parameters of these interactions are evaluated self-consistently using the saturation properties of nuclear matter like binding energy, pressure, compressibility and symmetry energy. The computed equation of state of pure neutron matter (PNM) is used to calculate mass and radius of a pure neutron star.
A systematic description of low-energy observables in light nuclei is presented. The effective field theory formalism without pions is extended to: i) predictions with next-to-leading-order (non-perturbatively) accuracy for the 4-helium binding energy B(α), the triton charge radius, and the 3-helium-neutron scattering length; ii) phase shifts for neutron-deuteron scattering and α-neutron low-energy scattering at leading order; iii) the ground states of the 5-helium (with and without Coulomb interaction) and 6-helium isotopes up to next-to-leading order; The convergence from leading- to next-to…
A microscopic theory of nuclei based on a 'free' scattering NN-potential is meaningful only if this potential fits on-shell scattering data. This is a necessary but not sufficient condition for the theory to be successful. It has been demonstrated repeatedly in the past that 2-body off-shell adjustments or many-body forces are necessary. It has been shown however, using Eff. Field Theory and formal scattering theory, that off-shell and many-body effects can not be separated. This 'equivalence theorem' allows us to concentrate on the off-shell effects.Examples of on-shell equivalent potentials Pari…
The large values of the singlet and triplet scattering lengths locate the two-nucleon system close to the unitary limit, the limit in which these two values diverge. As a consequence, the system shows a continuous scale invariance which strongly constrains the values of the observables, a well-known fact already noticed a long time ago. The three-nucleon system shows a discrete scale invariance that can be observed by correlations of the triton binding energy with other observables as the doublet nucleon-deuteron scattering length or the alpha-particle binding energy. The low-energy dynamics o…
We introduce new values of the strength constants (i.e., $a$, $b$, $c$, and $d$ coefficients) of the Tucson-Melbourne (TM) 2$π$ exchange three nucleon potential. The new values come from contemporary dispersion relation analyses of meson factory $π$N scattering data. We make variational Monte Carlo calculations of the triton with the original and updated three-body forces to study the effects of this update. We remove a short-range -- $π$-range part of the potential due to the $c$ coefficient and discuss the effect on the triton binding energy.
We analyse the impact of the statistical uncertainties of the the nucleon-nucleon interaction, based on the Granada-2013 np-pp database, on the binding energies of the triton and the alpha particle using a bootstrap method, by solving the Faddeev equations for $^3$H and the Yakubovsky equations for $^4$He respectively. We check that in practice about 30 samples prove enough for a reliable error estimate. An extrapolation of the well fulfilled Tjon-line correlation predicts the experimental binding of the alpha particle within uncertainties.
Using a generalized Bohr model and the hyper-spherical formalism for a three-body system, we derive the Thomas theorem assuming a simple interaction depending on the range of the potential. We discuss the conditions for which an unbound two-body system produces a bound three-body system and derive universal energy functions. We apply our model to $^{4}$He and Triton atoms as well as to the triton nucleus. Using their scattering lengths and effective ranges, we are able to reproduce the two-body or the three-body binding energies with only one parameter fitted. Prediction for excited (Efimov) l…
We investigate the variation with light quark mass of the mass of the nucleon as well as the masses of the mesons commonly used in a one-boson-exchange model of the nucleon-nucleon force. Care is taken to evaluate the meson mass shifts at the kinematic point relevant to that problem. Using these results, the corresponding changes in the energy of the 1 S0 anti-bound state, the binding energies of the deuteron, triton and selected finite nuclei are evaluated using a one-boson exchange model. The results are discussed in the context of possible corrections to the standard scenario for big bang n…
We re-examine the contribution of the $πN$ $S_{31}$ channel to the three-nucleon force for an energy dependent separable potential. Despite the lack of cancellation between the $S_{31}$ and the $P_{11}$ and $P_{33}$ channels, the total contribution of the three-nucleon force to the triton binding is still small.
We perform the first complete analysis of nd scattering at next-to-next-to-leading order in chiral effective field theory including the corresponding three-nucleon force and extending our previous work, where only the two-nucleon interaction has been taken into account. The three-nucleon force appears first at this order in the chiral expansion and depends on two unknown parameters. These two parameters are determined from the triton binding energy and the nd doublet scattering length. We find an improved description of various scattering observables in relation to the next-to-leading order re…
The cross section for the thermal neutron capture by the deuteron is calculated with pionless Effective Field Theory(EFT). No new Three-Nucleon forces are needed up to next-to-next-to-leading order in order to achieve cut-off independent results, besides those fixed by the triton binding energy and Nd scattering length in the triton channel. The cross-section is accurately determined to be $σ_{tot}=[0.503\pm 0.003]mb$. At zero energies, the magnetic $M1$-transition gives the dominant contribution and is calculated up to next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^2$LO). Close agreement between the avail…
By calculating the contribution of the $π-π$ three-body force to the three-nucleon binding energy in terms of the $πN$ amplitude using perturbation theory, we are able to determine the contribution of the different $πN$ partial waves to the three-nucleon force. The division of the $πN$ amplitude into a pole and nonpole gives a unique procedure for the determination of the $πNN$ form factor in the model. The total contribution of the three-body force to the binding energy of the triton is found to be very small.
We calculate the electromagnetic and axial nuclear moments of the deuteron and triton as a function of their radius using a relativistic two-nucleon and three-nucleon model formulated on the light-cone. The results also provide an estimate of the nuclear binding corrections to helicity-dependent deep inelastic scattering sum rules. At large nucleon radius, the moments are given by the usual non-relativistic formulae modified by finite binding effects. At small radius, the moments take the canonical values given by the generalization of the Drell-Hearn-Gerasimov sum rule. In addition, as R-->0,…
Neutron-deuteron elastic scattering cross sections are calculated at different energies using modern nucleon-nucleon interactions and the Tucson-Melbourne three-nucleon force adjusted to the triton binding energy. Predictions based on NN forces only underestimate nucleon-deuteron data in the minima at higher energies starting around 60 MeV. Adding the three-nucleon forces fills up those minima and reduces the discrepancies significantly.
We calculate the triton binding energy with a non-local NN potential that fits the world NN data below 350 MeV with the almost perfect $χ^2$/datum of 1.03. The non-locality is derived from relativistic meson field theory. The result obtained in a 34-channel, charge-dependent Faddeev calculation is 8.00 MeV, which is 0.4 MeV above the predictions by local NN potentials. The increase in binding energy can be clearly attributed to the off-shell behavior of the non-local potential. Our result cuts in half the discrepancy between theory and experiment established from local NN potentials. Implicati…
Background: The relativistic three-body problem has a long tradition in few-nucleon physics. Calculations of the triton binding energy based on the solution of the relativistic Faddeev equation in general lead to a weaker binding than the corresponding non-relativistic calculation. Purpose: In this work we solve for the three-body binding energy as well as the wave function and its momentum distribution. The effect of the different relativistic ingredients are studied in detail. Method: Relativistic invariance is incorporated within the framework of Poincar{é} invariant quantum mechanics. The …
The relativistic effect on differential cross sections, nucleon-to-nucleon and nucleon-to-deuteron polarization transfer coefficients, and the spin correlation function, of nucleon-deuteron elastic scattering is investigated employing several three-dimensional relativistic three-body equations and several nucleon-nucleon potentials. The polarization transfer coefficients are found to be sensitive to the details of the nucleon-nucleon potentials and the relativistic dynamics employed, and prefer trinucleon models with the correct triton binding energy. (To appear in Phys. Rev. C)
The three-body energy-dependent effective interaction given by the Bloch-Horowitz (BH) equation is evaluated for various shell-model oscillator spaces. The results are applied to the test case of the three-body problem (triton and He3), where it is shown that the interaction reproduces the exact binding energy, regardless of the parameterization (number of oscillator quanta or value of the oscillator parameter b) of the low-energy included space. We demonstrate a non-perturbative technique for summing the excluded-space three-body ladder diagrams, but also show that accurate results can be obt…
We calculate the contribution of relativistic dynamics on the neutron-deuteron scattering length and triton binding energy employing five sets trinucleon potential models and four types of three-dimensional relativistic three-body equations suggested in the preceding paper. The relativistic correction to binding energy may vary a lot and even change sign depending on the relativistic formulation employed. The deviations of these observables from those obtained in nonrelativistic models follow the general universal trend of deviations introduced by off- and on-shell variations of two- and three…
A recently developed procedure for a partial wave decomposition of a three-nucleon force is applied to the pi-pi, pi-rho and rho-rho components of the Tucson-Melbourne three-nucleon potential. The resulting matrix elements for the pi-pi and pi-rho components are compared with the values obtained using the standard approach to the partial wave decomposition, in which the pi-rho expressions for the matrix elements are also derived and presented. Several numerical tests and results for the triton binding energy and the correlation function prove the reliability and efficiency of the new method.
We address the connection between the saturating behavior of infinite nuclear matter and the description of finite nuclei based on state-of-the-art chiral two- and three-nucleon forces. We observe that chiral two- and three-nucleon interactions (at N2LO and at N3LO) which have been found to predict realistic binding energies and radii for a wide range of finite nuclei (from p-shell nuclei up to nickel isotopes) are unable to saturate infinite nuclear matter. On the other hand, it has been shown that, when the fits of the cD and cE couplings of the chiral three-nucleon interactions include the …
We solve the Faddeev-Yakubovsky equations for 3N and 4N bound states based on the most modern realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions. We include different realistic 3N forces. It is shown that all 3N force models can remove the underbinding of the triton and alpha-particle which one obtains with existing NN interactions. The agreement of theoretical predictions and the experimental binding energy is quite good and there is little room left for the action of four-nucleon forces in the alpha-particle. The effect of 3N forces on the wave function is investigated.
All realistic potential models for the two-nucleon interaction are to some extent based on boson exchange. However, in order to achieve an essentially perfect fit to the scattering data, characterized by a chi2/Ndata ~ 1, previous potentials have abandoned a pure one boson-exchange mechanism (OBE). Using a covariant theory, we have found a OBE potential that fits the 2006 world np data below 350 MeV with a chi2/Ndata = 1.06 for 3788 data. Our potential has fewer adjustable parameters than previous high-precision potentials, and also reproduces the experimental triton binding energy without int…
We explore the lattice spacing dependence in Nuclear Lattice Effective Field Theory for few-body systems up to next-to-next-to leading order in chiral effective field theory including all isospin breaking and electromagnetic effects, the complete two-pion-exchange potential and the three-nucleon forces. We calculate phase shifts in the neutron-proton system and proton-proton systems as well as the scattering length in the neutron-neutron system. We then perform a full next-to-next-to-leading order calculation with two-nucleon and three-nucleon forces for the triton and helium-4 and analyse the…
The S-wave effective range parameters of the neutron-deuteron (nd) scattering are derived in the Faddeev formalism, using a nonlocal Gaussian potential based on the quark-model baryon-baryon interaction fss2. The spin-doublet low-energy eigenphase shift is sufficiently attractive to reproduce predictions by the AV18 plus Urbana three-nucleon force, yielding the observed value of the doublet scattering length and the correct differential cross sections below the deuteron breakup threshold. This conclusion is consistent with the previous result for the triton binding energy, which is nearly repr…
We calculate perturbatively the energy per nucleon in infinite nuclear matter with a chiral N3LO (next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order) two-body potential plus a N2LO three-body force (3BF). The 3BF low-energy constants which cannot be constrained by two-body observables are chosen such as to reproduce the A=3 binding energies and the triton Gamow-Teller matrix element. This enables to study the nuclear matter equation of state in a parameter-free approach.
The chiral low-energy constants c_D and c_E are constrained by means of accurate ab initio calculations of the A=3 binding energies and, for the first time, of the triton beta decay. We demonstrate that these low-energy observables allow a robust determination of the two undetermined constants. The consistency of the interactions and currents in chiral effective field theory is crucial to this remarkable result. The two- plus three-nucleon interactions from chiral effective field theory defined by properties of the A=2 system and the present determination of c_D and c_E are successful in predi…
The 3N forces due to pi-rho, pi-sigma and pi-omega exchanges following from the nucleon Born diagrams and diagrams with an intermediate N^{*}(1440) are re-analyzed. The cancellation between pi-sigma and pi-omega forces is rather sensitive to the values of the coupling constants and to the form of the piNN vertex. Experimental uncertainties in the parameters of the TM pi-pi potential are assessed. They lead to uncertainties in theoretical predictions of the triton binding energy of about 0.4 MeV. The low-energy limit of pi-sigma and pi-omega potentials is performed. It defines the coupling cons…
A simplified 1D (one-dimensional) model for a generalized 3N system is considered, as a testing ground for the explicit treatment of the meson dynamics in this system. We focus attention on the irreducible diagrams generated by the pion dynamics in the 3N system, and in particular to a new type of three-nucleon force discussed recently in the literature, and generated by the one-pion-exchange mechanism in presence of a nucleon-nucleon correlation. It is found that these new terms in the simplified model have an approximately 30% effect compared to the standard three-nucleon force terms in a `T…
By calculating the contribution of the $π-π$ three-body force to the three-nucleon binding energy in terms of the $πN$ amplitude using perturbation theory, we are able to determine the importance of the energy dependence and the contribution of the different partial waves of the $πN$ amplitude to the three-nucleon force. A separable representation of the non-pole $πN$ amplitude allows us to write the three-nucleon force in terms of the amplitude for $NN\rightarrow NN^*$, propagation of the $NNN^*$ system, and the amplitude for $NN^*\rightarrow NN$, with $N^*$ being the $πN$ quasi-particle ampl…
The longitudinal and transversal asymmetries of the total $\vec{n}\vec{d}$ cross section are calculated. Four modern nucleon-nucleon interactions: AV18, CD Bonn, NijmI and NijmII, give different predictions for these observables. When the three-nucleon Hamiltonian is supplemented by the $2π$-exchange Tucson-Melbourne three-nucleon force (3NF), individually adjusted with each particular NN potential to reproduce the experimental triton binding energy, all predictions practically coincide. We propose to check this scaling behavior experimentally in order to get a clear signal for 3NF effects in …
We analyze the quark-mass dependence of electromagnetic properties of two and three-nucleon states. To that end, we apply the pionless effective field theory to experimental data and numerical lattice calculations which simulate QCD at pion masses of 450~MeV and 806~MeV. At the physical pion mass, we postdict the magnetic moment of helium-3, $μ_{^3He}=-2.13~$nNM, and the magnetic polarizability of deuterium, $β_D=7.33~10^{-2}~$fm$^3$. Magnetic polarizabilities of helium-3, $β_{^3He}=9.7~10^{-4}~$fm$^3$, and the triton, $β_{^3H}=8.2~10^{-4}~$fm$^3$, are predictions. Postdictions of the effectiv…
We argue that many features of the structure of nuclei emerge from a strictly perturbative expansion around the unitarity limit, where the two-nucleon S waves have bound states at zero energy. In this limit, the gross features of states in the nuclear chart are correlated to only one dimensionful parameter, which is related to the breaking of scale invariance to a discrete scaling symmetry and set by the triton binding energy. Observables are moved to their physical values by small, perturbative corrections, much like in descriptions of the fine structure of atomic spectra. We provide evidence…
We construct accurate models of three-nucleon (3N) interaction by fitting, in a hybrid phenomenological approach, the low-energy constants parametrizing the subleading 3N contact operators to the triton binding energy, n-d scattering lengths, cross section and polarization observables of p-d scattering at 2 MeV center-of-mass energy. These models lead to a satisfactory description of polarized p-d scattering data in the whole energy range below the deuteron breakup threshold. In particular, the long-standing $A_y$ puzzle seems to be solved thanks to the new terms considered in the 3N force. Tw…
