In this paper, we carry out simulations of radial velocity (RV) measurements of the mass of the 8-11 Myr Neptune-sized planet K2-33b using high-precision near infrared velocimeters like SPIRou at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. We generate a RV curve containing a planet signature and a realistic stellar activity signal, computed for a central wavelength of 1.8 $μ$m and statistically compatible with the light-curve obtained with K2. The modelled activity signal includes the effect of time-evolving dark and bright surface features hosting a 2 kG radial magnetic field, resulting in a RV signal of semi-amplitude ~30 m/s. Assuming a 3-month visibility window, we build RV time-series including Gaussian white noise from which we retrieve the planet mass while filtering the stellar activity signal using Gaussian Process Regression. We find that 35/50 visits spread over 3 consecutive bright-time runs on K2-33 allow one to reliably detect planet RV signatures of respectively 10 and 5 m/s at precisions larger than 3 $σ$. We also show that 30 visits may end up being insufficient in some cases to provide a good coverage of the stellar rotation cycle, with the result that the planet signature can go undetected or the mass estimation be plagued by large errors.
In this work, we investigate the properties of young giant planet spectra in the optical and suggest that future space-based direct imaging missions should be considering young planets as a valuable and informative science case. While young planets are dimmer in the optical than in the infrared, they can still be brighter in the optical than a mature planet of similar mass. Therefore, an instrument designed to characterize mature planets should also be suitable for high-precision photometric imaging and spectroscopy of young self-luminous planets in a wavelength range and at a contrast ratio n…
Theoretical predictions suggest that the distribution of planets in very young stars could be very different to that typically observed in Gyr old systems that are the current focus of radial velocity surveys. However, the detection of planets around young stars is hampered by the increased stellar activity associated with young stars, the signatures of which can bias the detection of planets. In this paper we place realistic limitations on the possibilities for detecting planets around young active G and K dwarfs. The models of stellar activity based on tomographic imaging of the G dwarf HD 1…
Stellar flybys in star clusters may perturb the evolution of young planetary systems in terms of disk truncation, planetary migration and planetary mass accretion. We investigate the feedback of a young planetary system during a single close stellar encounter in a typical open young stellar cluster. We consider 5 masses for the stellar perturbers: 0.5, 0.8, 1, 3 and 8 M$_{Sun}$, in coplanar, prograde and retrograde orbits respect to the planetary disk, varying the pertruber-host star orbital periastron from 100 AU to 500 AU. We have made 3D modelizations with the smooth particle hydrodynamics …
Aiming to detect planetary companions to young stars with debris disks via the radial velocity method, we observed HD114082 during April 2018 - August 2022 as one of the targets of our RVSPY program (Radial Velocity Survey for Planets around Young stars). We used the FEROS spectrograph, mounted to the MPG/ESO 2.2 m telescope in Chile, to obtain high signal-to-noise spectra and time series of precise radial velocities (RVs). Additionally, we analyzed archival HARPS spectra and TESS photometric data. We used the CERES, CERES++ and SERVAL pipelines to derive RVs and activity indicators and ExoStr…
The lithium doublet at 6708 Å provides an age diagnostic for main sequence FGK dwarfs. We measured the abundance of lithium in 1305 stars with detected transiting planets from the Kepler Mission using high-resolution spectroscopy. Our catalog of lithium measurements from this sample have a range of abundance from A(Li) = 3.11 $\pm$ 0.07 to an upper limit of $-$0.84 dex. For a magnitude-limited sample that comprises 960 of the 1305 stars, our Keck-HIRES spectra have a median S/N = 45 per pixel at $\sim$6700 Å with spectral resolution $\fracλ{Δλ}$ = $R$ = 55,000. We identify 80 young stars that …
Planets in young clusters are powerful probes of the evolution of planetary systems. Here we report the discovery of three planets transiting K2-136 (EPIC 247589423), a late K dwarf in the Hyades (~800 Myr) cluster, and robust detection limits for additional planets in the system. The planets were identified from their K2 light curves, as part of our survey of young clusters and star forming regions. The smallest planet has a radius comparable to Earth (0.99 +/- 0.05 Earth radii), making it one of the few Earth-sized planets with a known, young age. The two larger planets are likely a mini-Nep…
Young nearby stars are good candidates in the search for planets with both radial velocity (RV) and direct imaging techniques. This, in turn, allows for the computation of the giant planet occurrence rates at all separations. The RV search around young stars is a challenge as they are generally faster rotators than older stars of similar spectral types and they exhibit signatures of magnetic activity (spots) or pulsation in their RV time series. Specific analyses are necessary to characterize, and possibly correct for, this activity. Our aim is to search for planets around young nearby stars a…
At young ages, when radiation from the host star is high, and the planet is hot and inflated after formation, planetary atmospheric mass loss can be extremely strong compared to older planets. In turn, stellar winds are faster and denser for young stars compared to evolved main-sequence stars. Their interaction with escaping planetary atmospheres can substantially affect atmospheric mass loss rates, as well as the observable signatures of escaping atmospheres, with both effects expected to occur differently for young and evolved planets. We perform a comparative study of two systems around sta…
Protoplanetary disks around young stars are the birth sights of planetary systems like our own. Disks represent the gaseous dusty matter left after the formation of their central stars. The mass and luminosity of the star, initial disk mass and angular momentum, and gas viscosity govern disk evolution and accretion. Protoplanetary disks are the cosmic nurseries where microscopic dust grains grow into pebbles, planetesimals, and planets.
The origin of the observed diversity of planetary system architectures is one of the main topic of the exoplanetary research. The detection of a statistically significant sample of planets around young stars allows us to study the early stages of planet formation and evolution, but only a handful of them is known so far. In this regard, a considerable contribution is expected from the NASA TESS satellite, which is now performing a survey of $\sim 85 \%$ of the sky to search for short-period transiting planets In its first month of operations, TESS found a planet candidate with an orbital perio…
Young planets provide a window into the early stages and evolution of planetary systems. Ideal planets for such research are in coeval associations, where the parent population can precisely determine their ages. We describe a young association (MELANGE-3) in the Kepler field, which harbors two transiting planetary systems (Kepler-1928 and Kepler-970). We identify MELANGE-3 by searching for kinematic and spatial overdensities around Kepler planet hosts with high levels of lithium. To determine the age and membership of MELANGE-3, we combine new high-resolution spectra with archival light curve…
Planets around young stars are thought to undergo atmospheric evaporation due to the high magnetic activity of the host stars. Here we report on X-ray observations of V1298 Tau, a young star with four transiting exoplanets. We use X-ray observations of the host star with Chandra and ROSAT to measure the current high-energy irradiation level of the planets, and employ a model for the stellar activity evolution together with exoplanetary mass loss to estimate the possible evolution of the planets. We find that V1298 Tau is X-ray bright with $\log L_X$ [erg/s] $=30.1$ and has a mean coronal tempe…
Direct imaging in the infrared at the diffraction limit of large telescopes is a unique probe of the properties of young planetary systems. We survey 55 single class I and class II stars in Taurus in the L' filter using natural and laser guide star adaptive optics and the near-infrared camera (NIRC2) of the Keck II telescope, in order to search for planetary mass companions. We use both reference star differential imaging and kernel phase techniques, achieving typical 5-sigma contrasts of ~6 magnitudes at separations of 0.2" and ~8 magnitudes beyond 0.5". Although we do not detect any new fain…
The properties of 2M1207b, a young (~ 8 Myr) planet-mass companion, have lacked a satisfactory explanation for some time. The combination of low luminosity, red near-IR colors, and L-type near-IR spectrum (previously consistent with Teff ~ 1600K) implies an abnormally small radius. Early explanations for the apparent underluminosity of 2M1207b invoked an edge-on disk or the remnant of a recent protoplanetary collision. The discovery of a second planet-mass object (HR8799b) with similar luminosity and colors as 2M1207b indicates that a third explanation, one of a purely atmospheric nature, is m…
The abundance of short-period planetary systems with high orbital obliquities relative to the spin of their host stars is often taken as evidence that scattering processes play important roles in the formation and evolution of these systems. More recent studies have suggested that wide binary companions can tilt protoplanetary disks, inducing a high stellar obliquity that form through smooth processes like disk migration. DS Tuc Ab, a transiting planet with an 8.138 day period in the 40 Myr Tucana-Horologium association, likely orbits in the same plane as its now-dissipated protoplanetary disk…
The alignment of planetary orbits with respect to the stellar rotation preserves information on their dynamical histories. Measuring this angle for young planets help illuminate the mechanisms that create misaligned orbits for older planets, as different processes could operate over timescales ranging from a few Myr to a Gyr. We present spectroscopic transit observations of the young exoplanet V1298 Tau b; we update the age of V1298 Tau to be $28\pm4$ Myr based on Gaia EDR3 measurements. We observed a partial transit with Keck/HIRES and LBT/PEPSI, and detected the radial velocity anomaly due t…
AU Mic is a young, active star whose transiting planet was recently detected. We report our analysis of its TESS data, where we modeled the BY Draconis type quasi-periodic rotational modulation by starspots simultaneously to the flaring activity and planetary transits. We measured a flare occurrence rate of 6.35 flares per day for flares with amplitudes in the range of $0.06\% < f_{\rm max} < 1.5\%$ of the star flux. We employed a Bayesian MCMC analysis to model the five transits of AU Mic b, improving the constraints on the planetary parameters. The planet radius of $4.07\pm0.17$~R$_{\oplus}$…
We present the statistical analysis of a subsample of 45 young stars surrounded by protoplanetary disks (PPDs). This is the largest imaging survey uniquely focused on PPDs to date. Our goal is to search for young forming companions embedded in the disk material and to constrain their occurrence rate in relation to the formation mechanism. We used principal component analysis based point spread function subtraction techniques to reveal young companions forming in the disks. We calculated detection limits for our datasets and adopted a black-body model to derive temperature upper limits of poten…
The two planetary systems TOI-942 and TOI-421 share many similar characteristics, apart from their ages (50~Myr and 9~Gyr). Each of the stars hosts two sub-Neptune-like planets at similar orbits and in similar mass ranges. In this paper, we aim to investigate whether the similarity of the host stars and the configuration of the planetary systems can be taken as proof that the two systems were formed and evolved in a similar way. In paper I of this series, we performed a comparative study of these two systems using 3D modeling of atmospheric escape and its interaction with the stellar wind, for…
The occurrence rate of long-period giant planets around young stars is highly uncertain since it is not only governed by the protoplanetary disc structure and planet formation process, but also reflects dynamical re-structuring processes after planet formation as well as possible capture of planets not formed in-situ. Direct imaging is currently the only feasible method to detect such wide-orbit planets and constrain their occurrence rate. We carry out a large L'-band high-contrast direct imaging survey for giant planets around young stars with protoplanetary or debris discs using the NACO ins…
We have used Pan-STARRS1 to discover an extremely red late-L dwarf, which has (J-K)_MKO = 2.84 and (J-K)_2MASS = 2.78, making it the reddest known field dwarf and second only to 2MASS J1207-39b among substellar companions. Near-IR spectroscopy shows a spectral type of L7 and reveals a triangular H-band continuum and weak alkali (K I and Na I) lines, hallmarks of low surface gravity. Near-IR astrometry from the Hawaii Infrared Parallax Program gives a distance of 24.6+/-1.4 pc and indicates a much fainter J-band absolute magnitude than field L dwarfs. The position and kinematics of PSO J318-22 …
The search of close (a<=5 au) giant planet(GP) companions with radial velocity(RV) around young stars and the estimate of their occurrence rates is important to constrain the migration timescales. Furthermore, this search will allow the giant planet occurrence rates to be computed at all separations via the combination with direct imaging techniques. The RV search around young stars is a challenge as they are generally faster rotators than older stars of similar spectral types and they exhibit signatures of spots or pulsation in their RV time series. Specific analyses are necessary to characte…
We report the results of our search of planet candidates in Open Clusters and Young Stellar Associations based on the TESS Objects of Interest Catalog. We find one confirmed planet, one promising candidate, one brown dwarf, and three unverified planet candidates in a sample of 1229 Open Clusters from the second Gaia data release. We discuss individual planet-star systems based on their basic parameters, membership probability, and the observation notes from the ExoFOP-TESS website. We also find ten planet candidates (P $>$ 95%) in Young Stellar Associations by using the BANYAN $Σ$ Bayesian Alg…
Although there has yet been no undisputed discovery of a still-forming planet embedded in a gaseous protoplanetary disk, the cleared inner holes of transitional disks may be signposts of young planets. Here we show that the subset of accreting transitional disks with wide, optically thin inner holes of 15 AU or more can only be sculpted by multiple planets orbiting inside each hole. Multiplanet systems provide two key ingredients for explaining the origins of transitional disks. First, multiple planets can clear wide inner holes where single planets open only narrow gaps. Second, the confined,…
As of August 2019, among the more than 4000 confirmed exoplanets, only one has been detected in a globular cluster (GC) M4. The scarce of exoplanet detections motivates us to employ direct $N$-body simulations to investigate the dynamical stability of planets in young massive clusters (YMCs), which are potentially the progenitors of GCs. In an $N=128{\rm k}$ cluster of virial radius 1.7 pc (comparable to Westerlund-1), our simulations show that most wide-orbit planets ($a\geq 20$~au) will be ejected within a timescale of 10 Myr. Interestingly, more than $70\%$ of planets with $a<5$~au survive …
When they first appear in the HR diagram, young stars rotate at a mere 10\% of their break-up velocity. They must have lost most of the angular momentum initially contained in the parental cloud, the so-called angular momentum problem. We investigate here a new mechanism by which large amounts of angular momentum might be shed from young stellar systems, thus yielding slowly rotating young stars. Assuming that planets promptly form in circumstellar disks and rapidly migrate close to the central star, we investigate how the tidal and magnetic interactions between the protostar, its close-in pla…
The K2-33 planetary system hosts one transiting ~5 R_E planet orbiting the young M-type host star. The planet's mass is still unknown, with an estimated upper limit of 5.4 M_J. The extreme youth of the system (<20 Myr) gives the unprecedented opportunity to study the earliest phases of planetary evolution, at a stage when the planet is exposed to an extremely high level of high-energy radiation emitted by the host star. We perform a series of 1D hydrodynamic simulations of the planet's upper atmosphere considering a range of possible planetary masses, from 2 to 40 M_E, and equilibrium temperat…
PDS 70b is a recently discovered and directly imaged exoplanet within the wide ($\gtrsim$40 au) cavity around PDS 70 (Keppler et al. 2018, Müller et al. 2018). Ongoing accretion onto the central star suggests that accretion onto PDS 70b may also be ongoing. We present the first high contrast images at H$α$ (656 nm) and nearby continuum (643 nm) of PDS 70 utilizing the MagAO system. The combination of these filters allows for the accretion rate of the young planet to be inferred, as hot infalling hydrogen gas will emit strongly at H$α$ over the optical continuum. We detected a source in H$α$ at…
Stars in young nearby associations are the only targets allowing giant planet searches at all separations in the near future, by coupling indirect techniques such as radial velocity and deep imaging. These stars are first priorities targets for the forthcoming planets imagers on 10-m class telescopes. Young stars rotate more rapidly and are more active than their older counterparts. Both effects can limit the capability to detect planets using RV. We wish to explore the planet detection capabilities of a representative sample of stars in close and young associations with radial velocity data a…
We carry out N-body simulations to examine the effects of dynamical interactions on planetary systems in young open star clusters. We explore how the planetary populations in these star clusters evolve, and how this evolution depends on the initial amount of substructure, the virial ratio, the cluster mass and density, and the initial semi-major axis of the planetary systems. The fraction of planetary systems that remains intact as a cluster member, fbps, is generally well-described by the functional form fbps=f0(1+[a/a0]^c)^-1, where (1-f0) is the fraction of stars that escapes from the clust…
Young exoplanets are snapshots of the planetary evolution process. Planets that orbit stars in young associations are particularly important because the age of the planetary system is well constrained. We present the discovery of a transiting planet larger than Neptune but smaller than Saturn in the 45 Myr Tucana-Horologium young moving group. The host star is a visual binary, and our follow-up observations demonstrate that the planet orbits the G6V primary component, DS Tuc A (HD 222259A, TIC 410214986). We first identified transits using photometry from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satell…
Exoplanets orbiting pre-main sequence stars are laboratories for studying planet evolution processes, including atmospheric loss, orbital migration, and radiative cooling. V1298 Tau, a young solar analog with an age of 23 $\pm$ 4 Myr, is one such laboratory. The star is already known to host a Jupiter-sized planet on a 24 day orbit. Here, we report the discovery of three additional planets --- all between the size of Neptune and Saturn --- based on our analysis of K2 Campaign 4 photometry. Planets c and d have sizes of 5.6 and 6.4 $R_\oplus$, respectively and with orbital periods of 8.25 and 1…
The detection and characterization of young planetary systems offers a direct path to study the processes that shape planet evolution. We report on the discovery of a sub-Neptune-size planet orbiting the young star HD 110082 (TOI-1098). Transit events we initially detected during TESS Cycle 1 are validated with time-series photometry from Spitzer. High-contrast imaging and high-resolution, optical spectra are also obtained to characterize the stellar host and confirm the planetary nature of the transits. The host star is a late F dwarf (M=1.2 Msun) with a low-mass, M dwarf binary companion (M=…
Within the SONYC - Substellar Objects in Nearby Young Clusters - survey, we investigate the frequency of free-floating planetary-mass objects (planemos) in the young cluster NGC1333. Building upon our extensive previous work, we present spectra for 12 of the faintest candidates from our deep multi-band imaging, plus seven random objects in the same fields, using MOIRCS on Subaru. We confirm seven new sources as young very low mass objects (VLMOs), with Teff of 2400-3100K and mid-M to early-L spectral types. These objects add to the growing census of VLMOs in NGC1333, now totaling 58. Three con…
Many extrasolar planets follow orbits that differ from the nearly coplanar and circular orbits found in our solar system; orbits may be eccentric or inclined with respect to the host star's equator, and the population of giant planets orbiting close to their host stars suggests significant orbital migration. There is currently no consensus on what produces such orbits. Theoretical explanations often invoke interactions with a binary companion star on an orbit that is inclined relative to the planet's orbital plane. Such mechanisms require significant mutual inclinations between planetary and b…
Although all-sky surveys have led to the discovery of dozens of young planets, little is known about their atmospheres. Here, we present multi-wavelength transit data for the super Neptune-sized exoplanet, K2-33b -- the youngest (~10 Myr) transiting exoplanet to-date. We combined photometric observations of K2-33 covering a total of 33 transits spanning >2 years, taken from K2, MEarth, Hubble, and Spitzer. The transit photometry spanned from the optical to the near-infrared (0.6-4.5$μ$m), enabling us to construct a transmission spectrum of the planet. We find that the optical transit depths ar…
Exoplanets can evolve significantly between birth and maturity, as their atmospheres, orbits, and structures are shaped by their environment. Young planets ($<$1 Gyr) offer an opportunity to probe the critical early stages of this evolution, where planets evolve the fastest. However, most of the known young planets orbit prohibitively faint stars. We present the discovery of two planets transiting HD 63433 (TOI 1726, TIC 130181866), a young Sun-like ($M_*=0.99\pm0.03$) star. Through kinematics, lithium abundance, and rotation, we confirm that HD 63433 is a member of the Ursa Major moving group…
We present the results of a direct-imaging survey for very large separation ($>$100 au), companions around 95 nearby young K5-L5 stars and brown dwarfs. They are high-likelihood candidates or confirmed members of the young ($\lessapprox$150 Myr) $β$ Pictoris and AB Doradus moving groups (ABDMG) and the TW Hya, Tucana-Horologium, Columba, Carina, and Argus associations. Images in $i'$ and $z'$ filters were obtained with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) on Gemini South to search for companions down to an apparent magnitude of $z'\sim$22-24 at separations $\gtrapprox$20" from the targe…
Recently K2 and TESS have discovered transiting planets with radii between $\sim$ 5-10 R$_\oplus$ around stars with ages $<100$ Myr. These young planets are likely to be the progenitors of the ubiquitous super-earths/sub-neptunes, that are well studied around stars with ages $\gtrsim 1$ Gyr. The formation and early evolution of super-earths/sub-neptunes are poorly understood. Various planetary origin scenarios predict a wide range of possible formation entropies. We show how the formation entropies of young ($\sim$20-60 Myr), highly irradiated planets can be constrained if their mass, radius a…
We perform a simulation using the Astrophysical Multipurpose Software Environment of the Orion Trapezium star cluster in which the evolution of the stars and the dynamics of planetary systems are taken into account. The initial conditions from earlier simulations were selected in which the size and mass distributions of the observed circumstellar disks in this cluster are satisfactorily reproduced. Four, five, or size planets per star were introduced in orbit around the 500 solar-like stars with a maximum orbital separation of 400au. Our study focuses on the production of free-floating planets…
We have carried out high contrast imaging of 70 young, nearby B and A stars to search for brown dwarf and planetary companions as part of the Gemini NICI Planet-Finding Campaign. Our survey represents the largest, deepest survey for planets around high-mass stars (~1.5-2.5 M_sun) conducted to date and includes the planet hosts beta Pic and Fomalhaut. We obtained follow-up astrometry of all candidate companions within 400 AU projected separation for stars in uncrowded fields and identified new low-mass companions to HD 1160 and HIP 79797. We have found that the previously known young brown dwar…
Since Protostars and Planets VI (PPVI), our knowledge of the global properties of protoplanetary and debris disks, as well as of young stars, has dramatically improved. At the time of PPVI, mm-observations and optical to near-infrared spectroscopic surveys were largely limited to the Taurus star-forming region, especially of its most massive disk and stellar population. Now, near-complete surveys of multiple star-forming regions cover both spectroscopy of young stars and mm interferometry of their protoplanetary disks. This provides an unprecedented statistical sample of stellar masses and mas…
We present the identification of two previously known young objects in the solar neighbourhood as a likely very wide binary. TYC 9486-927-1, an active, rapidly rotating early-M dwarf, and 2MASS J21265040-8140293, a low-gravity L3 dwarf previously identified as candidate members of the $\sim$45 Myr old Tucana Horologium association (TucHor). An updated proper motion measurement of the L3 secondary, and a detailed analysis of the pair's kinematics in the context of known nearby, young stars, reveals that they share common proper motion and are likely bound. New observations and analyses reveal t…
Cool M dwarfs outnumber sun-like G stars by ten to one in the solar neighborhood. Due to their proximity, small size, and low mass, M-dwarf stars are becoming attractive targets for exoplanet searches via almost all current search methods. But what planetary systems can form around M dwarfs? Following up on the Cool Stars~16 Splinter Session "Planet Formation Around M Dwarfs", we summarize here our knowledge of protoplanetary disks around cool stars, how they disperse, what planetary systems might form and can be detected with current and future instruments.
BD+20 1790 is a young active, metal-rich, late-type K5Ve star. We have undertaken a study of stellar activity and kinematics for this star over the past few years. Previous results show a high level of stellar activity, with the presence of prominence-like structures, spots on the surface and strong flare events, despite the moderate rotational velocity of the star. In addition, radial velocity variations with a semi-amplitude of up to 1 km/s were detected. We investigated the nature of these radial velocity variations, in order to determine whether they are due to stellar activity or the refl…
The environment of a binary star system may contain two circumstellar disks, one orbiting each of the stars, and a circumbinary disk orbiting about the entire binary. The disk structure and evolution are modified by the presence of the binary. Resonances emit waves and open disk gaps. The binary's total mass and mass ratio as well as orbital elements can be modified by the disks. Signatures of these interactions provide observational tests of the dynamical models. The interaction of young planets with protoplanetary disks circularizes the orbits of Jupiter-mass planets and may produce much mor…
To search for young transiting planets in continuous light curves, we monitor young open clusters (2-200 Myr) with the YETI network. Here we report the first transiting candidates (two in Trumpler 37, one in 25 Ori). Follow-up observations of the candidates are partly done.
We search for signatures of a distant planet around the two-million-year-old classical T-Tauri star CI Tau hosting a hot Jupiter candidate (M_{p} sin{i} ~ 8.1 M_{Jupiter}) in an eccentric orbit (e ~0.3). To probe the existence of an outer perturber, we reanalyzed 1.3 mm dust continuum observations of the protoplanetary disk around CI Tau obtained by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. We found a gap structure at ~0".8 in CI Tau's disk. Our visibility fitting assuming an axisymmetric surface brightness profile suggested that the gap is located at a deprojected radius of 104.5+/-1.…
We present and analyze $J$$K_{s}$$L^\prime$ photometry and our previously published $H$-band photometry and $K$-band spectroscopy for ROXs 42Bb, an object Currie et al. (2014) first reported as a young directly imaged planet-mass companion. ROXs 42Bb exhibits IR colors redder than field L dwarfs but consistent with other planet-mass companions. From the H$_{2}$O-2 spectral index, we estimate a spectral type of L0 $\pm$ 1; weak detections/non-detections of the $CO$ bandheads, $Na I$, and $Ca I$ support evidence for a young, low surface gravity object primarily derived from the $H_{2}$(K) index.…
AU Mic~b is a Neptune size planet on a 8.47-day orbit around the nearest pre-main sequence ($\sim$20 Myr) star to the Sun, the bright (V=8.81) M dwarf AU Mic. The planet was preliminary detected in Doppler radial velocity time series and recently confirmed to be transiting with data from the TESS mission. AU Mic~b is likely to be cooling and contracting and might be accompanied by a second, more massive planet, in an outer orbit. Here, we present the observations of the transit of AU Mic~b using ESPRESSO on the VLT. We obtained a high-resolution time series of spectra to measure the Rossiter-M…
Detection of transiting exoplanets around young stars is more difficult than for older systems due to increased stellar variability. Nine young open cluster planets have been found in the K2 data, but no single analysis pipeline identified all planets. We have developed a transit search pipeline for young stars which uses a transit-shaped notch and quadratic continuum in a 12 or 24\,hour window to fit both the stellar variability and the presence of a transit. In addition, for the most rapid rotators (P$_\mathrm{rot}<2$\,days) we model the variability using a linear combination of observed rot…
Planets around young stars trace the early evolution of planetary systems. We report the discovery and validation of two planetary systems with ages $\lesssim 300$ Myr from observations by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite. TOI-251 is a 40-320 Myr old G star hosting a 2.74 +0.18/-0.18 REarth mini-Neptune with a 4.94 day period. TOI-942 is a 20-160 Myr old K star hosting a system of inflated Neptune-sized planets, with TOI-942b orbiting with a period of 4.32 days, with a radius of 4.81 +0.20/-0.20 REarth, and TOI-942c orbiting in a period of 10.16 days with a radius of 5.79 +0.19/-0.18 …
