In recent years, contour-based eigensolvers have emerged as a standard approach for the solution of large and sparse eigenvalue problems. Building upon recent performance improvements through non-linear least square optimization of so-called rational filters, we introduce a systematic method to design these filters by minimizing the worst-case convergence ratio and eliminate the parametric dependence on weight functions. Further, we provide an efficient way to deal with the box-constraints which play a central role for the use of iterative linear solvers in contour-based eigensolvers. Indeed, these parameter-free filters consistently minimize the number of iterations and the number of FLOPs to reach convergence in the eigensolver. As a byproduct, our rational filters allow for a simple solution to load balancing when the solution of an interior eigenproblem is approached by the slicing of the sought after spectral interval.
This paper describes a set of rational filtering algorithms to compute a few eigenvalues (and associated eigenvectors) of non-Hermitian matrix pencils. Our interest lies in computing eigenvalues located inside a given disk, and the proposed algorithms approximate these eigenvalues and associated eigenvectors by harmonic Rayleigh-Ritz projections on subspaces built by computing range spaces of rational matrix functions through randomized range finders. These rational matrix functions are designed so that directions associated with non-sought eigenvalues are dampened to (approximately) zero. Var…

Evaluating the action of a matrix function on a vector, that is $x=f(\mathcal M)v$, is an ubiquitous task in applications. When $\mathcal M$ is large, one usually relies on Krylov projection methods. In this paper, we provide effective choices for the poles of the rational Krylov method for approximating $x$ when $f(z)$ is either Cauchy-Stieltjes or Laplace-Stieltjes (or, which is equivalent, completely monotonic) and $\mathcal M$ is a positive definite matrix. Relying on the same tools used to analyze the generic situation, we then focus on the case $\mathcal M=I \otimes A - B^T \otimes I$, a…
In this paper, applied strictly monotonic increasing scaled maps, a kind of well-conditioned linear barycentric rational interpolations are proposed to approximate functions of singularities at the origin, such as $x^α$ for $α\in (0,1)$ and $\log(x)$. It just takes $O(N)$ flops and can achieve fast convergence rates with the choice the scaled parameter, where $N$ is the maximum degree of the denominator and numerator. The construction of the rational interpolant couples rational polynomials in the barycentric form of second kind with the transformed Jacobi-Gauss-Lobatto points. Numerical exper…
A landmark result from rational approximation theory states that $x^{1/p}$ on $[0,1]$ can be approximated by a type-$(n,n)$ rational function with root-exponential accuracy. Motivated by the recursive optimality property of Zolotarev functions (for the square root and sign functions), we investigate approximating $x^{1/p}$ by composite rational functions of the form $r_k(x, r_{k-1}(x, r_{k-2}( \cdots (x,r_1(x,1)) )))$. While this class of rational functions ceases to contain the minimax (best) approximant for $p\geq 3$, we show that it achieves approximately $p$th-root exponential convergence …
We propose a novel method to compute a finite difference stencil for Riesz derivative for artibitrary speed of convergence. This method is based on applying a pre-filter to the Grünwald-Letnikov type central difference stencil. The filter is obtained by solving for the inverse of a symmetric Vandemonde matrix and exploiting the relationship between the Taylor's series coefficients and fast Fourier transform. The filter costs O\left(N^{2}\right) operations to evaluate for O\left(h^{N}\right) of convergence, where h is the sampling distance. The higher convergence speed should more than offset t…
Iteration methods based on barycentric rational interpolation are derived that exhibit accelerating orders of convergence. For univariate root search, the derivative-free methods approach quadratic convergence and the first-derivative methods approach cubic convergence. For univariate optimisation, the convergence order of the derivative-free methods approaches 1.62 and the order of the first-derivative methods approaches 2.42. Generally, performance advantages are found with respect to low-memory iteration methods. In optimisation problems where the objective function and gradient is calculat…
Convergence analysis of block iterative solvers for Hermitian eigenvalue problems and the closely related research on properties of matrix-based signal filters are challenging, and attract increasing attention due to their recent applications in spectral data clustering and graph-based signal processing. We combine majorization-based techniques pioneered for investigating the Rayleigh-Ritz method in [SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl., 31 (2010), pp. 1521-1537] with tools of classical analysis of the block power method by Rutishauser [Numer. Math., 13 (1969), pp. 4-13] to derive convergence rate bound…
This paper proposes an efficient method for computing selected generalized eigenpairs of a sparse Hermitian definite matrix pencil $(A,B)$. Based on Zolotarev's best rational function approximations of the signum function and conformal mapping techniques, we construct the best rational function approximation of a rectangular function supported on an arbitrary interval via function compositions with partial fraction representations. This new best rational function approximation can be applied to construct spectrum filters of $(A,B)$ with a smaller number of poles than a direct construction with…
The FEAST method for solving large sparse eigenproblems is equivalent to subspace iteration with an approximate spectral projector and implicit orthogonalization. This relation allows to characterize the convergence of this method in terms of the error of a certain rational approximant to an indicator function. We propose improved rational approximants leading to FEAST variants with faster convergence, in particular, when using rational approximants based on the work of Zolotarev. Numerical experiments demonstrate the possible computational savings especially for pencils whose eigenvalues are …
This paper uses a probabilistic approach to analyze the converge of an ensemble Kalman filter solution to an exact Kalman filter solution in the simplest possible setting, the scalar case, as it allows us to build upon a rich literature of scalar probability distributions and non-elementary functions. To this end we introduce the bare-bones Scalar Pedagogical Ensemble Kalman Filter (SPEnKF). We show that in the asymptotic case of ensemble size, the expected value of both the analysis mean and variance estimate of the SPEnKF converges to that of the true Kalman filter, and that the variances of…

A recently-introduced class of probabilistic (uncertainty-aware) solvers for ordinary differential equations (ODEs) applies Gaussian (Kalman) filtering to initial value problems. These methods model the true solution $x$ and its first $q$ derivatives \emph{a priori} as a Gauss--Markov process $\boldsymbol{X}$, which is then iteratively conditioned on information about $\dot{x}$. This article establishes worst-case local convergence rates of order $q+1$ for a wide range of versions of this Gaussian ODE filter, as well as global convergence rates of order $q$ in the case of $q=1$ and an integrat…
