Motivated by the detection of a hardening in the gamma-ray spectrum of the radio galaxy Centaurus A, we have analysed ~10 years of Fermi-LAT observations of 26 radio galaxies to search for similar spectral features. We find that the majority of the radio galaxies' gamma-ray spectral energy distributions are best fitted with a simple power-law model, and no spectral hardening similar to that found in Centaurus A was detected. We show that, had there been any such spectral features present in our sample of radio galaxies, they would have been seen, but note that 7 of the radio galaxies (3C 111, 3C 120, 3C 264, IC 4516, NGC 1218, NGC 2892 and PKS 0625-35) show evidence for flux variability on 6-month timescales, which makes the detection of any steady spectral features difficult. We find a strong positive correlation (r = 0.9) between the core radio power at 5 GHz and the gamma-ray luminosity and, using a simple extrapolation to TeV energies, we expect around half of the radio galaxies studied will be detectable with the forthcoming Cherenkov Telescope Array.
Centaurus B (Cen B) is one of the closest and brightest radio-loud galaxy in the southern sky. This radio galaxy, proposed as a plausible candidate for accelerating ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs), is near the highest-energy neutrino event reported (IC35) in the High-Energy Starting Events catalog. Pierre Auger observatory reported the highest energy comic rays during 10 years of collecting data with some of them around this source. In this paper, the analysis of the gamma-ray spectrum and the light curve above 200 MeV is presented with nine years of cumulative Fermi-LAT data around Cen…
The γ-ray data of Fermi-LAT on the giant lobes of Centaurus A are analysed together with the high frequency radio data obtained with the Planck satellite. The large γ-ray photon statistics, accumulated during seven years of observations, and the recently updated Fermi collaboration software tools allow substantial extension of the detected γ-ray emission towards higher energy, up to 30 GeV, and lower energy, down to 60 MeV. Moreover, the new γ-ray data allow us to explore the spatial features of γ-ray emission of the lobes. For the north lobe, we confirm, with higher statistical significance, …
Radio and $γ$-ray measurements of large lobes of several radio galaxies provide adequate basis for determining whether emission in these widely separated spectral regions is largely by energetic electrons. This is very much of interest as there is of yet no unequivocal evidence for a significant energetic proton component to account for $γ$-ray emission by neutral pion decay. A quantitative assessment of the proton spectral distribution necessitates full accounting of the local and background radiation fields in the lobes; indeed, doing so in our recent analysis of the spectral energy distribu…
The association of at least a dozen ultrahigh-energy cosmic-ray (UHECR) events with energy $\gtrsim 55$ EeV detected by the Pierre Auger Observatory (PAO) from the direction of Centaurus-A, the nearest radio galaxy, supports the scenario of UHECR acceleration in the jets of radio galaxies. In this work, we model radio to very high energy (VHE,$\gtrsim 100$ \rm GeV) $γ$-ray emission from Cen A, including GeV hardness detected by Fermi-LAT and TeV emission detected by HESS. We consider two scenarios: (i) Two zone synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) and external-Compton (EC) models, (ii) Two zone SSC,…
The nearest active radio galaxy Centaurus (Cen) A is a gamma-ray emitter in GeV to TeV energy scale. The High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) and non-simultaneous Fermi-LAT observation indicate an unusual spectral hardening above few GeV energies in the gamma-ray spectrum of Cen A. Very recently the H.E.S.S. observatory resolved the kilo parsec (kpc)-scale jets in Centaurus A at TeV energies. On the other hand, the Pierre Auger Observatory (PAO) detects a few ultra high energy cosmic ray (UHECR) events from Cen-A. The proton blazar inspired model, which considers acceleration of both ele…
The origin of recently discovered PeV neutrinos is an unsolved problem. In this work we consider a hadronic scenario to produce PeV neutrinos from a region around giant lobes of Centaurus A. Although ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) are accelerated and confined by giant lobes, they can escape to be later injected in the inter-group medium where galaxies near the giant lobes provides the condition to confine them. UHECRs interact with low-energy photons and protons producing high-energy photons and neutrinos. We found that the IC35 event cannot be generated neither inside the giant lobes n…
The origin of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) is still unknown. It has recently been proposed that UHECR anisotropies can be attributed to starburst galaxies or active galactic nuclei. We suggest that the latter is more likely and that giant-lobed radio galaxies such as Centaurus A and Fornax A can explain the data.
We report results from Chandra observations analyzed for evidence of variability and proper motion in the X-ray jet of Centaurus A. Using data spanning 15 years, collective proper motion of $11.3\pm3.3$ mas yr$^{-1}$, or $0.68\pm0.20c$, is detected for the fainter X-ray knots and other substructure present within the jet. The three brightest knots (AX1A, AX1C, and BX2) are found to be stationary to an upper limit of $0.10c$. Brightness variations up to 27% are detected for several X-ray knots in the jet. For the fading knots, BX2 and AX1C, the changes in spectral slope expected to accompany sy…
We report the Fermi Large Area Telescope detection of extended gamma-ray emission from the lobes of the radio galaxy Fornax A using 6.1 years of Pass 8 data. After Centaurus A, this is now the second example of an extended gamma-ray source attributed to a radio galaxy. Both an extended flat disk morphology and a morphology following the extended radio lobes were preferred over a point-source description, and the core contribution was constrained to be < 14% of the total gamma-ray flux. A preferred alignment of the gamma-ray elongation with the radio lobes was demonstrated by rotating the radio…
Centaurus A (Cen~A) is the nearest active radio galaxy, which has kiloparsec (kpc) scale jets and {giant lobes detected by various instruments in radio and X-ray frequency ranges}. The $Fermi$--Large Area Telescope and High Energy Stereoscopic System (HESS) confirmed, that Cen~A is a very high-energy (VHE; $> 0.1$~TeV) $γ$-ray emitter with a known spectral {softening} in the energy range from a few GeV to TeV. In this work, we consider a synchrotron self-Compton model in the nucleus for the broad band spectrum {below the break energy} and an external Compton model in kpc-scale jets for the $γ$…
Centaurus A (Cen A) is the nearest radio galaxy discovered as a very-high-energy (VHE; 100 GeV-100 TeV) $γ$-ray source by the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.). It is a faint VHE $γ$-ray emitter, though its VHE flux exceeds both the extrapolation from early Fermi-LAT observations as well as expectations from a (misaligned) single-zone synchrotron-self Compton (SSC) description. The latter satisfactorily reproduces the emission from Cen A at lower energies up to a few GeV. New observations with H.E.S.S., comparable in exposure time to those previously reported, were performed and eight…
Here we present results from over 500 kiloseconds Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of the cool core of the Centaurus cluster. We investigate the spatial distributions of the O, Mg, Si, S, Ar, Ca, Cr, Mn, Fe, and Ni abundances in the intracluster medium with CCD detectors, and those of N, O, Ne, Mg, Fe, and Ni with the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS). The abundances of most of the elements show a sharp drop within the central 18 arcsec, although different detectors and atomic codes give significantly different values. The abundance ratios of the above elements, including Ne/Fe with RGS…
The closest radio galaxies; Centaurus A, M87 and NGC 1275, have been detected from radio wavelengths to TeV $γ$-rays, and also studied as high-energy neutrino and ultra-high-energy cosmic ray potential emitters. Their spectral energy distributions show a double-peak feature, which is explained by synchrotron self-Compton model. However, TeV $γ$-ray measured spectra could suggest that very-high-energy $γ$-rays might have a hadronic origin. We introduce a lepto-hadronic model to describe the broadband spectral energy distribution; from radio to sub GeV photons as synchrotron self-Compton emissio…
Galaxy clusters are the largest virialised objects in the Universe, and as such, have a high dark matter (DM) concentration. This abundance of dark matter makes them promising targets for indirect DM searches. Here we report the details of a search, utilising almost 12~years of Fermi/LAT data, for gamma ray signatures from the pair annihilation of WIMP dark matter in the GeV energy band. From this, we present the constraints on the annihilation cross section for the bb-bar, W+W- and gamma-gamma channels, derived from the non-detection of a characteristic signal from five nearby high galactic l…
We report the discovery of a statistically significant hardening in the Fermi-LAT $γ$-ray spectrum of Centaurus A's core, with the spectral index hardening from $Γ_{1}=2.73 \pm 0.02$ to $Γ_{1}=2.29 \pm 0.07$ at a break energy of ($2.6 \pm 0.3$) GeV. Using a likelihood analysis, we find no evidence for flux variability in Cen A's core lightcurve above or below the spectral break when considering the entire 8 year period. Interestingly, however, the first $\sim3.5$ years of the low energy lightcurve shows evidence of flux variability at the $\sim3.5 σ$ confidence level. To understand the origin …
Non-blazar Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) have emerged as a new gamma-ray emitting source class on the extragalactic sky and started to deepen our understanding of the physical processes and the nature of AGN in general. The detection of Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxies in the Fermi-LAT energy regime, for example, offers important information for our understanding of jet formation and radio-loudness. Radio galaxies, on the other hand, have become particularly interesting at high (HE) and very high (VHE) gamma-ray energies. With their jets not directly pointing towards us (i.e. misaligned), they of…
The diffuse gamma-ray sky revealed 'Bubbles' of emission above and below the Galactic Plane symmetric around the centre of the Milky Way with a height of 10 kpc in both directions. At present there is no convincing explanation for the origin. To understand the role of the Galactic Centre (GC) one has to study the Bubble spectrum inside the disc, a region which has been excluded from previous analysis because of the large foreground. From a novel template fit, which allows a simultaneous determination of the signal and foreground in any direction, we find that bubble-like emission is not only f…
During a search for gamma-ray emission from NGC 3628 (Arp 317), two new unidentified gamma-ray sources, Fermi J1049.7+0435 and J1103.2+1145 have been discovered \cite{ATel}. The detections are made in data from the Large Area Telescope (LAT), on board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, in the 100\,MeV to 300\,GeV band during the period between 2008 August 5 and 2012 October 27. Neither is coincident with any source listed in the 2FGL catalogue \cite{Nolan2012}. Fermi J1049.7+0435 is at Galactic coordinates $(l,b) = (245.34^\circ, 53.27^\circ)$, $(α_{J2000}, δ_{J2000}) = (162.43^\circ, 4.60^\…
The Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) has been scanning the gamma-ray sky since 2008. The number of pulsars detected by the LAT now exceeds 200, making them by far the largest class of Galactic gamma-ray emitters. I discuss some of the latest pulsar discoveries made by the LAT, in particular those made since the release of the Pass 8 data.
Fermi LAT detection of two high Galactic latitude gamma-ray sources, Fermi J1049.7+0435 and J1103.2+1145
Since its launch in 2008, the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) allowed us to peek into the extremely energetic side of the Universe with unprecedented sensitivity and resolution. The tools available for analyzing Fermi-LAT data are the Fermitools and Fermipy, both of which can be scripted in Python and run via command lines in a terminal or in web-based interactive computing platforms. In this work, we are providing the community with easyFermi, an open-source user-friendly graphical interface for performing basic to intermediate analyses of Fermi-LAT data in the framework of Fermipy. With eas…
We use gamma-ray observations by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (Fermi-LAT) to impose limits on the properties of the hypothetical particle Weyl meson. Such mesons arise in theories which display local scale invariance and act as dark matter candidate. In a generalized locally scale invariant Standard Model it can decay or annihilate to the photon pair through the Higgs channel. We find that Fermi-LAT observations severely constrain the parameters of the Weyl meson.
