Centaurus A is the closest active galactic nucleus. High resolution imaging using Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) enables us to study the spectral and kinematic behavior of the radio jet-counterjet system on sub-parsec scales, providing essential information for jet emission and formation models. Our aim is to study the structure and spectral shape of the emission from the central-parsec region of Cen A. As a target of the Southern Hemisphere VLBI monitoring program TANAMI (Tracking Active Galactic Nuclei with Milliarcsecond Interferometry), VLBI observations of Cen A are made regularly at 8.4 and 22.3 GHz with the Australian Long Baseline Array (LBA) and associated telescopes in Antarctica, Chile, and South Africa. The first dual-frequency images of this source are presented along with the resulting spectral index map. An angular resolution of 0.4 mas x 0.7 mas is achieved at 8.4 GHz, corresponding to a linear scale of less than 0.013 pc. Hence, we obtain the highest resolution VLBI image of Cen A, comparable to previous space-VLBI observations. By combining with the 22.3 GHz image, which has been taken without contributing transoceanic baselines at somewhat lower resolution, we present the corresponding dual-frequency spectral index distribution along the sub-parsec scale jet revealing the putative emission regions for recently detected gamma-rays from the core region by Fermi/LAT. We resolve the innermost structure of the milliarcsecond scale jet and counterjet system of Cen A into discrete components. The simultaneous observations at two frequencies provide the highest resolved spectral index map of an AGN jet allowing us to identify multiple possible sites as the origin of the high energy emission.
The jet-counterjet system of the closest radio-loud active galaxy Centaurus A (Cen A) can be studied with Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) on unprecedented small linear scales of ~0.018pc. These high-resolution observations provide essential information on jet emission and propagation within the inner parsec of an AGN jet. We present the results of a kinematic study performed within the framework of the Southern-hemisphere AGN monitoring program TANAMI. Over 3.5years, the evolution of the central-parsec jet structure of Cen A was monitored with VLBI. These observations reveal complex j…
Centaurus A (Cen A) is a bright radio source associated with the nearby galaxy NGC 5128 where high-resolution radio observations can probe the jet at scales of less than a light-day. The South Pole Telescope (SPT) and the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) performed a single-baseline very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) observation of Cen A in January 2015 as part of VLBI receiver deployment for the SPT. We measure the correlated flux density of Cen A at a wavelength of 1.4 mm on a $\sim$7000 km (5 G$λ$) baseline. Ascribing this correlated flux density to the core, and with the use of a …
We investigate observational properties of a kilo-parsec scale knot in radio-loud quasar 3C 380 by using two epoch archival data obtained by Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) at 5 GHz on 1998 July and 2001 April. We succeed in obtaining the highest spatial resolution image of the bright knot K1 located at 732 milliarcseconds, or more than 20 kpc de-projected, downstream from the nucleus three times better than previously obtained highest resolution image by Papageorgiou et al. (2006). Our images reveal, with new clarity, "inverted bow-shock" structure in K1 facing the nucleus and its mo…
The data release 1 (DR1) of milliarcsecond-scale accurate optical positions of stars and galaxies was recently published by the space mission Gaia. We study the offsets of highly accurate absolute radio (very long baseline interferometry, VLBI) and optical positions of active galactic nuclei (AGN) to see whether or not a signature of wavelength-dependent parsec-scale structure can be seen. We analyzed VLBI and Gaia positions and determined the direction of jets in 2957 AGNs from their VLBI images. We find that there is a statistically significant excess of sources with VLBI-to-Gaia position of…
In the framework of the TANAMI multi-wavelength and VLBI monitoring, we study the evolution of the parsec-scale radio emission in radio galaxies in the southern hemisphere and their relationship to the $γ$-ray properties. In this first paper, we focus on Fermi-LAT-detected sources. We perform a kinematic analysis for five $γ$-ray detected radio galaxies using multi-epoch 8.4 GHz VLBI images, deriving limits on intrinsic jet parameters. We analyzed Fermi-LAT data in order to study possible connections between the $γ$-ray properties and the pc-scale jets of Fermi-LAT-detected radio galaxies, bot…
Extragalactic jets originating from the central supermassive black holes of active galaxies are powerful, highly relativistic plasma outflows, emitting light from the radio up to the gamma-ray regime. The details of their formation, composition and emission mechanisms are still not completely clear. The combination of high-resolution observations using very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) and multiwavelength monitoring provides the best insight into these objects. Here, such a combined study of sources of the TANAMI sample is presented, investigating the parsec-scale and high-energy proper…
Following our study of the radio and high-energy properties of $γ$-ray-emitting radio galaxies, here we investigate the kinematic and spectral properties of the parsec-scale jets of radio galaxies that have not yet been detected by Fermi-LAT. We take advantage of the regular VLBI observations provided by the TANAMI monitoring program, and explore the kinematic properties of six $γ$-ray-faint radio galaxies. We include publicly available VLBI kinematics of $γ$-ray-quiet radio galaxies monitored by the MOJAVE program and perform a Fermi-LAT analysis, deriving upper limits. We combine these resul…
Centaurus A is the closest radio-loud active galaxy. Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) enables us to study the jet-counterjet system on milliarcsecond (mas) scales, providing essential information for jet emission and propagation models. We study the evolution of the central parsec jet structure of Cen A over 3.5 years. The proper motion analysis of individual jet components allows us to constrain jet formation and propagation and to test the proposed correlation of increased high energy flux with jet ejection events. Cen A is an exceptional laboratory for such detailed study as its pro…
The analysis of $γ$-ray flux variability along with the parsec-scale jet kinematics suggests that the high-energy radiation in the BL Lac object S5 0716+714 has a significant correlation with the mm-VLBI core flux density and with the local orientation of the inner jet flow. For the first time in any blazar, we report a significant correlation between the $γ$-ray flux variations and the variations in the local orientation of the jet outflow (position angle). We find that the $γ$-ray flux variations lead the 7~mm VLBI core flux variations by 82$\pm$32~days, which suggests that the high-energy e…
The spatially resolved broad-band spectroscopy with Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) is one of the few methods that can probe the physical conditions inside blazar jets. We report on measurements of the magnetic field strength in parsec-scale radio structures of selected bright Fermi blazars, based on fitting the synchrotron spectrum to VLBA images made at seven frequencies in a 4.6 -- 43.2 GHz range. Upper limits of B <= 10^-2 -- 10^2 G (observer's frame) could be placed on the magnetic field strength in 13 sources. Hard radio spectra (-0.5 <= a <= +0.1, S_nu ~ nu^a) observed above th…
The statistical analysis of parsec scale region of radio galaxies is crucial to obtain information on the nature of their central engine. To this purpose, we defined and observed the Bologna Complete Sample (BCS) which is unbiased with respect to the orientation of the nuclear relativistic jet being selected from low-frequency samples. The BCS is a complete sample of 94 nearby (z<0.1) radio galaxies that are well studied targets with literature kiloparsec data. For all of them, we collected parsec scale information asking new VLBI (VLBA and EVN) observations. Statistical results on their prope…
VLBI Detections of Compact Nuclei in Spiral-hosted Double-lobed Radio-loud Active Galactic Nuclei (DRAGNs): Evidence for Weak Parsec-Scale Jet Activity

We conducted radio detection observations at 8.4 GHz for 22 radio-loud broad absorption line (BAL) quasars, selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Third Data Release, by a very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) technique. The VLBI instrument we used was developed by the Optically ConnecTed Array for VLBI Exploration project (OCTAVE), which is operated as a subarray of the Japanese VLBI Network (JVN). We aimed at selecting BAL quasars with nonthermal jets suitable for measuring their orientation angles and ages by subsequent detailed VLBI imaging studies to evaluate two controversi…
We report that active galactic nucleus (AGN) jets are causally connected on parsec scales, based on 15 GHz Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) data from a sample of 133 AGN jets. This result is achieved through a new method for measuring the product of the jet Lorentz factor and the intrinsic opening angle Gamma*theta_j from measured apparent opening angles in flux density limited samples of AGN jets. The Gamma*theta_j parameter is important for jet physics because it is related to the jet-frame sidewise expansion speed and causal connection between the jet edges and its symmetry axis. Most import…
We present measurements of proper motion of the sub-parsec scale jet at 22 GHz in the nearby FR I galaxy 3C 66B. Observations were made using the VLBA at six epochs over four years. A phase-referencing technique was used to improve the image quality of the weak and diffuse jet components. We find that the inner knots are almost stationary, though one of them was expected to be detected with the apparent speed of 0.2 mas/yr according to 8 GHz monitoring at the same observation epochs. Clear flux variations are not observed in the core at 22 GHz, in contrast, clear flux enhancement is observed i…
Significant positional offsets of the value from 1 mas to more than 10 mas were found previously between radio (VLBI) and optical (Gaia) positions of active galactic nuclei (AGN). They happen preferentially parallel to the parsec-scale jet direction. AGN with VLBI-to-Gaia offsets pointed downstream the jet are found to have favourably higher optical polarization, as expected if extended optical jets dominate in the emission and shift the Gaia centroid away from the physical nucleus of the source. Upstream offsets with the suggested domination of accretion disks manifest themselves through the …
We expand our previous studies of the parsec-scale structure of TeV blazars by presenting first-epoch images from VLBA monitoring of ten newer TeV HBLs. All ten sources were successfully detected and imaged, and all showed a one-sided core-jet structure. Many display a morphology common to TeV HBLs: a short, collimated jet followed by a transition to low surface brightness extended emission with a much broader opening angle. The newly detected TeV HBLs tend to be fainter in the radio; the median core flux density was 22 mJy, and the median brightness temperature was 8x10^9 K. The brightness te…
We present the observational results of the Gamma-ray blazar, 3C 66A, at 2.3, 8.4, and 22 GHz at 4 epochs during 2004-05 with the VLBA. The resulting images show an overall core-jet structure extending roughly to the south with two intermediate breaks occurring in the region near the core. By model-fitting to the visibility data, the northmost component, which is also the brightest, is identified as the core according to its relatively flat spectrum and its compactness. As combined with some previous results to investigate the proper motions of the jet components, it is found the kinematics of…
Jets of compact radio sources are highly relativistic and Doppler boosted, making studies of their intrinsic properties difficult. Observed brightness temperatures can be used to study the intrinsic physical properties of the relativistic jets, and constrain models of jet formation in the inner jet region. We aim to observationally test such inner jet models. The very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) cores of compact radio sources are optically thick at a given frequency. The distance of the core from the central engine is inversely proportional to the frequency. Under the equipartition con…
On the kiloparsec scale, extragalactic radio jets show two distinct morphologies related to their power: collimated high-power jets ending in a bright termination shock and low-power jets opening up close to the core and showing a more diffuse surface brightness distribution. The emergence of this morphological dichotomy on the parsec scale at the innermost jet regions can be studied with very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) radio observations of blazars in which the jet emission is strongly Doppler boosted due to relativistic bulk motion at small angles between the jet direction and the l…
The nearest active radio galaxy Centaurus (Cen) A is a gamma-ray emitter in GeV to TeV energy scale. The High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) and non-simultaneous Fermi-LAT observation indicate an unusual spectral hardening above few GeV energies in the gamma-ray spectrum of Cen A. Very recently the H.E.S.S. observatory resolved the kilo parsec (kpc)-scale jets in Centaurus A at TeV energies. On the other hand, the Pierre Auger Observatory (PAO) detects a few ultra high energy cosmic ray (UHECR) events from Cen-A. The proton blazar inspired model, which considers acceleration of both ele…
Active galactic nuclei (AGN) accreting at rates close to the Eddington limit can host radiatively driven mildly relativistic outflows. Some of these X-ray absorbing but powerful outflows may produce strong shocks resulting in a significant non-thermal emission. This outflow-driven radio emission may be detectable in the radio-quiet quasar PDS 456 since it has a bolometric luminosity reaching the Eddington limit and a relativistic wide-aperture X-ray outflow with a kinetic power high enough to quench the star formation in its host galaxy. To investigate this possibility, we performed very-long-…
We have performed a very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) survey of local (z < 0.05) ultra hard X-ray (14-195 keV) selected active galactic nuclei (AGN) from the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) using KVN, KaVA, and VLBA. We first executed fringe surveys of 142 BAT-detected AGN at 15 or 22 GHz. Based on the fringe surveys and archival data, we find 10/279 nearby AGN (~4%) VLBI have 22 GHz flux above 30 mJy. This implies that the X-ray AGN with a bright nuclear jet are not common. Among these 10 radio-bright AGN, we obtained 22 GHz VLBI imaging data of our own for four targets and reprocess…
Recently a population of compact radio galaxies were classified as Fanaroff-Riley type 0 radio galaxies (FR 0s). The physical nature of FR 0s and the connection with the classical FR I and II galaxies are not currently well understood. Here, we report the radio properties of fourteen FR 0s on parsec (pc) scales derived from their very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) imaging observations. All sources show compact structures. Four sources show relativistic beaming with Doppler boosting factors ranging from 1.7 to 6. The brightness temperatures of the other ten are below the equilibrium limit…
We compare the γ-ray light curves of the blazars, constructed with data provided by the Fermi Large Area Telescope, with flux and polarization variations in the VLBI core and bright superluminal knots obtained via monthly monitoring with the Very Long Baseline Array at 43 GHz. For all blazars in the sample that exhibit a high γ-ray state on time scales from several weeks to several months, an increase of the total flux in the mm-wave core is contemporaneous with the γ-ray activity (more than a third of the sample). Here we present the results for quasars with the most extreme γ-ray behavior (3…
The broad-line radio galaxy 3C 111 exhibited a major flux density outburst in 2007. Here, we present imaging and preliminary kinematic results of the jet, based on three millimetre-VLBI observations (86 GHz) using the Global Millimeter VLBI Array (GMVA) covering one year just after the radio flare. The GMVA data allow us to study this outburst with unprecedented image fidelity at highest (sub-parsec) resolution. On these scales, the outburst is resolved into a complex series of plasma components forming an intriguing bent structure. Within 1 mas from the jet base, ejections vary in position an…
In this work, we report a radio galaxy with precessing jets, double-peaked emission lines and the presence of two compact radio components with a projected separation of ~6 parsec in Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations. The emission line peak separations could be suggesting the presence of a supermassive black hole binary (BBH) with a separation of 6.3 parsec, matching the VLBI results. The kinematic jet precession model applied to the jets of J1328+2751 indicates that if it is a BBH, the accretion disk of the primary black hole is not coplanar with the binary system orbit, m…

Single-zone synchrotron self-Compton and external Compton models are widely used to explain broad-band Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) of blazars from infrared to gamma-rays. These models bear obvious similarities to the homogeneous synchrotron cloud model which is often applied to explain radio emission from individual components of parsec-scale radio jets. The parsec-scale core, typically the brightest and most compact feature of blazar radio jet, could be the source of high-energy emission. We report on ongoing work to test this hypothesis by deriving the physical properties of parsec-…
We present Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) images of 20 TeV blazars (HBLs) not previously well-studied on the parsec scale. Observations were made between August and December 2013, at a frequency of 8.4 GHz. These observations represent the first epoch of a VLBA monitoring campaign on these blazars, and they significantly increase the fraction of TeV HBLs studied with high-resolution imaging. The peak VLBI flux densities of these sources range from about 10 to 100 mJy/beam, and parsec-scale jet structure is detected in all sources. About half of the VLBI cores are resolved, with brightness tem…
We use a combination of high-resolution very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) radio and multi-wavelength flux density and polarization observations to constrain the physics of the dissipation mechanism powering the broadband flares in 3C 279 during an episode of extreme flaring activity in 2013-2014. Six bright flares superimposed on a long-term outburst are detected at $γ$-ray energies. Four of the flares have optical and radio counterparts. The two modes of flaring activity (faster flares sitting on top of a long term outburst) present at radio, optical, $γ$-ray frequencies are missing in…

Observational information on high-energy astrophysical neutrinos is being continuously collected by the IceCube observatory. However, the sources of neutrinos are still unknown. In this study, we use radio very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) data for a complete VLBI-flux-density limited sample of active galactic nuclei (AGN). We address the problem of the origin of astrophysical neutrinos with energies above 200 TeV in a statistical manner. It is found that AGN positionally associated with IceCube events have typically stronger parsec-scale cores than the rest of the sample. The post-tria…

One of the most intriguing and challenging quests of current astrophysics is to understand the physical conditions and processes responsible for production of high-energy particles, and emission of γ-rays. A combination of high-resolution Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) images with broadband flux variability measurements is a unique way to probe the emission mechanisms at the bases of jets. Our analysis of γ-ray flux variability observed by the Fermi-LAT (Large Area Telescope) along with the parsec-scale jet kinematics suggests that the $γ$-ray emission in blazar S5 0716+714 has a sig…
We study the variation of the optical polarization angle in the blazar OJ287 and compare it with the precessing binary black hole model with a 'live' accretion disk. First, a model of the variation of the jet direction is calculated, and the main parameters of the model are fixed by the long term optical brightness evolution. Then this model is compared with the variation of the parsec scale radio jet position angle in the sky. Finally, the variation of the polarization angle is calculated using the same model, but using a magnetic field configuration which is at a constant angle relative to t…

The Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) monitoring program TANAMI provides bi-monthly, dualfrequency (8GHz and 22GHz) observations of extragalactic jets with milliarcsecond resolution south of -30 deg declination using the Australian Long Baseline Array (LBA) and additional radio telescopes in Antarctica, Chile, New Zealand and South Africa. Supporting programs provide multiwavelength coverage of the Fermi/LAT sources of the TANAMI sample, in order to construct simultaneous broadband spectral energy distributions (SEDs), as well as rapid follow-ups of high energy flares. The main purpose …
We present a census of sub-pc scale properties of the VLBI cores in a complete sample of local Seyfert galaxies. Seventeen out of 23 sources with a VLA detection are detected also with VLBI at 1.7 GHz and/or 5 GHz, with an average monochromatic radio luminosity log [P (5\, GHz) W Hz^{-1} = 19.4. Radio cores are of heterogeneous nature, the majority of them showing elongated structures or accompanied by extra components, broad ranges of brightness temperatures (10^{5}-10^{10} K) and spectral indices (from steep to highly inverted). Interestingly, the detection rate (26%) of water maser emission…
The Southern Hemisphere VLBI monitoring program TANAMI provides dual-frequency (8 GHz and 22 GHz), milliarcsecond monitoring of extragalactic jets south of -30 degrees declination. The TANAMI sample consists of a combined radio and gamma-ray selected subsample of currently 80 AGN jets, with new gamma-ray bright sources being added upon detections by Fermi/LAT. Supporting programs provide simultaneous multiwavelength coverage of all sources, in order to construct broadband spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of flaring and quiescence source states, as well as a rapid follow-up of high-energy f…
Broad Balmer emission lines in active galactic nuclei (AGN) may display dramatic changes in amplitude, even disappearance and re-appearance in some sources. As a nearby galaxy at a redshift of z = 0.0264, Mrk 590 suffered such a cycle of Seyfert type changes between 2006 and 2017. Over the last fifty years, Mrk 590 also underwent a powerful continuum outburst and a slow fading from X-rays to radio wavelengths with a peak bolometric luminosity reaching about ten per cent of the Eddington luminosity. To track its past accretion and ejection activity, we performed very long baseline interferometr…
NGC 4395 is a dwarf galaxy at a distance of about 4.3 Mpc (scale: ~0.021 pc mas$^{-1}$). It hosts an intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) with a mass between ~10$^4$ and ~10$^5$ solar masses. The early radio observations of NGC 4395 with the very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) network, High Sensitivity Array (HSA), at 1.4 GHz in 2005 showed that its nucleus has a sub-mJy outflow-like feature (E) extending over 15 mas. To probe the possibility of the feature E as a continuous jet with a base physically coupled with the accretion disc, we performed deep VLBI observations with the European VL…
Recently the IceCube collaboration detected very high energy (VHE) neutrinos and associated them with the blazar \txs{}, raising a possible association of VHE neutrinos with this and other individual blazars. Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) is so far the only technique enabling the imaging of the innermost jet at milli-arcsec resolution (parsec scale), where the high energy emission possibly originates from. Here, we report on the radio properties of the parsec scale jet in \txs{} derived from the analysis of multi-epoch multi-frequency archive VLBI data. The half opening angle of the…
PKS 1749+096 is a BL Lac object showing weak extended jet emission to the northeast of the compact VLBI core on parsec scales. We aim at better understanding the jet kinematics and variability of this source and finding clues that may applicable to other BL Lac objects. The jet was studied with multi-epoch multi-frequency high-resolution VLBI observations. The jet is characterized by a one-sided curved morphology at all epochs and all frequencies. The VLBI core, located at the southern end of the jet, was identified based on its spectral properties. The equipartition magnetic field of the core…
Using millimeter-very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations of the BL Lac object S5 0716+714 from August 2008 to September 2013, we investigate variations in the core flux density and orientation of the sub-parsec scale jet i.e. position angle. The gamma-ray data obtained by the Fermi-LAT (Large Area Telescope) are used to investigate the high-energy flux variations over the same time period. For the first time in any blazar, we report a significant correlation between the gamma-ray flux variations and the position angle (PA) variations in the VLBI jet. The cross-correlation analysi…
We present new multi-epoch Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations of a set of TeV blazars drawn from our VLBA program to monitor all TeV-detected high-frequency peaked BL Lac objects (HBLs) at parsec scales. Most of these sources are faint in the radio, so they have not been well observed with VLBI by other surveys. Our previous measurements of apparent jet speeds in TeV HBLs showed apparent jet speeds that were subluminal or barely superluminal, suggesting jets with velocity structures at the parsec-scale. Here we present apparent jet speed measurements for eight new TeV HBLs, which for…
