The outstanding transport properties expected at the edge of two-dimensional time-reversal invariant topological insulators have proven to be challenging to realize experimentally, and have so far only been demonstrated in very short devices. In search for an explanation to this puzzling observation, we here report a full first-principles calculation of topologically protected transport at the edge of novel quantum spin Hall insulators - specifically, Bismuth and Antimony halides - based on the non-equilibrium Green's functions formalism. Our calculations unravel two different scattering mechanisms that may affect two-dimensional topological insulators, namely time-reversal symmetry breaking at vacancy defects and inter-edge scattering mediated by multiple co-operating impurities, possibly non-magnetic. We discuss their drastic consequences for typical non-local transport measurements as well as strategies to mitigate their negative impact. Finally, we provide an instructive comparison of the transport properties of topologically protected edge states to those of the trivial edge states in MoS$_2$ ribbons. Although we focus on a few specific cases (in terms of materials and defect types) our results should be representative for the general case and thus have significance beyond the systems studied here.
The nonlinear ballistic conductance of three-dimensional quantum microconstrictions, which contain magnetic impurities, is investigated. The nonlinear part of the conductance, which is due to the interaction of electrons with magnetic impurities is obtained. The analytical results have been analyzed numerically. It is shown that intensity of the Kondo anomaly in the conductance as the function of the applied voltage depends on the diameter of the constriction and the positions of impurities.
By introducing a normal self-energy to incorporate the effects of magnetic impurities, Kondo effects in single-walled metallic carbon nanotubes are investigated within the Anderson model and Landauer formula. Magnetic impurities induce Kondo resonance and bring a valley of conductance unction near the Fermi level. The conductance of the nanotube increases with the temperature in the low temperature range. Thermoelectric power induced by magnetic impurities is gotten from Mott relation, and the calculations indicate its dependence on the temperature could interpret the experiment well.
Elastic backscattering of electrons moving along the helical edge is prohibited by time-reversal symmetry (TRS). We demonstrate, however, that an ensemble of magnetic impurities may cause TRS-preserving quasi-elastic backscattering, resulting in interference effects in the conductance. The characteristic energy transferred in a backscattering event is suppressed due to the RKKY interaction of localized spins (the suppression is exponential in the total number of magnetic impurities). We predict the statistics of conductance fluctuations to differ from those in the conventional case of a one-di…
We investigate the combined effects of magnetic impurities and applied magnetic field on the interference contribution to the conductance of disordered metals. We show that in a metal with weak spin-orbit interaction, the polarization of impurity spins reduces the rate of electron phase relaxation, thus enhancing the weak localization correction to conductivity. Magnetic field also suppresses thermal fluctuations of magnetic impurities, leading to a recovery of the conductance fluctuations. This recovery occurs regardless the strength of the spin-orbit interaction. We calculate the magnitudes …
Inter-tube conductance of double-wall carbon nanotubes with impurities is numerically studied. Its length dependence for various impurities is scaled by a mean-free path. The inter-tube conductance exhibits drastic linear increase with the tube length and takes a maximum around at the localization length. The maximum conductance is much smaller than the conductance quantum $e^2/π\hbar$.
The electron transport through the parabolic quantum wire placed in longitudinal magnetic field in the presence of the system of short-range impurities inside the wire is investigated. Using approach based on the zero-range potential theory we obtained an exact formula for the transmission coefficient of the electron through the wire that allows to calculate such the transport characteristics as the conductance and differential thermopower. The dependencies of conductance and thermopower on the chemical potential and magnetic field are investigated. The effect of elastic scattering due to shor…
Despite topological protection and the absence of magnetic impurities, two-dimensional topological insulators display quantized conductance only in surprisingly short channels, which can be as short as 100 nm for atomically thin materials. We show that the combined action of short-range nonmagnetic impurities located near the edges and on site electron-electron interactions effectively creates noncollinear magnetic scatterers, and, hence, results in strong backscattering. The mechanism causes deviations from quantization even at zero temperature and for a modest strength of electron-electron i…
The influence of the interference of electron waves, which were scattered by single impurities, on nonlinear quantum conductance of metallic microconstrictions (as was recently investigated experimentally) is studied theoretically. The dependence of the interference pattern in the conductance $G(V)$ on the contact diameter and the spatial distribution of impurities is analyzed. It is shown that the amplitude of conductance oscillation is strongly depended on the position of impurities inside the constriction.
We study the scanning tunneling microscopy response for magnetic atoms on open and structured surfaces using Wilson's renormalization group. We observe Fano resonances associated with Kondo resonances and interference effects. For a magnetic atom in a quantum corral coupled to the confined surface states, and experimentally relevant parameters, we observe a large confinement induced effect not present in the experiments. These results suggest that the Kondo screening is dominated by the bulk electrons rather than the surface ones.
Combining ab initio calculations and effective models derived from them, we discuss the electronic structure of oxygen doped gold chains when one Au atom is replaced by any transition-metal atom of the $3d$ series. The effect of O doping is to bring extended Au $5d_{xz}$ and $5d_{yz}$ states to the Fermi level, which together with the Au states of zero angular momentum projection, lead to three possible channels for the screening of the magnetism of the impurity. For most 3d impurities the expected physics is similar to that of the underscreened Kondo model, with singular Fermi liquid behavior…
The Spin Hall Effect (SHE) is a promising way for transforming charge currents into spin currents in spintronic devices. Large values of the Spin Hall Angle, the characteristic parameter of the yield of this transformation, have been recently found in noble metals doped with nonmagnetic impurities. We show that this can be explained by resonant scattering off impurity states split by the spin-orbit interaction. We apply our calculation to the interpretation of experiments on copper doped with 5d impurities and we describe the conditions to obtain the largest effects.
Electron transport through disordered systems that include spin scatterers is studied numerically. We consider three kinds of magnetic impurities: the Ising, the XY and the Heisenberg. By extending the transfer matrix method to include the spin degree of freedom, the two terminal conductance is calculated. The variance of conductance is halved as the number of spin components of the magnetic impurities increases. Application of the Zeeman field in the lead causes a further halving of the variance under certain conditions.
Electron transport in a two-terminal Aharonov-Bohm ring with a few short-range scatterers is investigated. An analytical expression for the conductance as a function of the electron Fermi energy and magnetic flux is obtained using the zero-range potential theory. The dependence of the conductance on positions of scatterers is studied. We have found that the conductance exhibits asymmetric Fano resonances at certain energies. The dependence of the Fano resonances on magnetic field and positions of impurities is investigated. It is found that collapse of the Fano resonances occurs and discrete e…
We study spectra for a 2D electron in the lowest Landau level with randomly distributed, repulsively correlated electric impurities. The lowest energy band reflects an effective magnetic field downshifted by an integer multiple of the impurity density. The downshift is precisely half that for the corresponding electron density in the composite-fermion picture of the fractional quantum Hall regime.
We study the extrinsic spin Hall effect induced by Ir impurities in Cu by injecting a pure spin current into a CuIr wire from a lateral spin valve structure. While no spin Hall effect is observed without Ir impurity, the spin Hall resistivity of CuIr increases linearly with the impurity concentration. The spin Hall angle of CuIr, $(2.1 \pm 0.6)$% throughout the concentration range between 1% and 12%, is practically independent of temperature. These results represent a clear example of predominant skew scattering extrinsic contribution to the spin Hall effect in a nonmagnetic alloy.
We have recently shown that asymmetric lateral spin orbit coupling (LSOC) resulting from the lateral in-plane electric field of the confining potential of a side-gated quantum point contact (QPC) can be used to create a strongly spin- polarized current by purely electrical means1 in the absence of applied magnetic field. Using the non-equilibrium Green function formalism (NEGF) analysis of a small model QPC2, three ingredients were found to be essential to generate the strong spin polarization: an asymmetric lateral confinement, a LSOC induced by the lateral confining potential of the QPC, and…
In this paper we will give a short rewiew about the conductance of a mesoscopic waveguide strip with a few impurities. Green-function method is used allowing to treat systems with low number of impurities, not only the completly clean case. Investigating a wire containing Dirac-delta potentials (modelling the impurities) we found that increasing number of impurities can cause a transition of the structure of conductance. The staircase like structure of the clean system vanishes and the conductance of a system containing finite number of impurities located periodically will be determined by the…
We study the effects of the RKKY interaction between magnetic impurities on the mesoscopic conductance fluctuations of a metal ring with dilute magnetic impurities. At sufficiently low temperatures and strong magnetic fields, the loss of electron coherence occurs mainly due to the scattering off rare pairs of strongly coupled magnetic impurities. We establish a relation between the dephasing rate and the distribution function of the exchange interaction within such pairs. In the case of the RKKY exchange interaction, this rate exhibits 1/B^2 behavior in strong magnetic fields. We demonstrate t…
Using exact diagonalization we examine the response of several most prominent fractional quantum Hall states to a single local impurity. The 2/3 singlet state is found to be more inert than the polarized one in spite of its smaller incompressibility gap. Based on its spin-spin correlation functions we interpret it as a liquid of electron pairs with opposite spin. A comparison of different types of impurities, non-magnetic and magnetic, is presented.
Scattering by magnetic impurities is known to destroy coherence of electron motion in metals and semiconductors. We investigate the decoherence introduced in a single act of electron scattering by a magnetic impurity in a quantum Hall system. To this end we introduce a fictitious nonunitary scattering matrix $\mathcal{S}$ for electrons that reproduces the exactly calculated scattering probabilities. The strength of decoherence is identified by the deviation of eigenvalues of the product $\mathcal{S}\mathcal{S}^{\dagger}$ from unity. Using the fictitious scattering matrix, we estimate the width…
Motivated by the recent experiment by Marguerite et al. [1] on imaging in graphene samples, we investigate theoretically the dissipation induced by resonant impurities in the quantum Hall regime. The impurity induced forward scattering of electrons at quantum Hall edges leads to an enhanced phonon emission, which reaches its maximum when the impurity state is tuned to resonance by a scanning tip voltage. Our analysis of the effect of the tip potential on the dissipation reveals peculiar thermal rings around the impurities, in consistency with experimental observations. Remarkably, this impurit…
We study a nonadiabatic effect on the conductances in the quantum Hall effect of two-dimensional electrons with a periodic potential. We found that the Hall and longitudinal conductances oscillate in time with a very large frequencies due to quantum fluctuation.
The charge and spin Hall conductance of the two-dimensional hole gas within the Luttinger model with and without inversion symmetry breaking terms in a perpendicular magnetic field are studied, and two key phenomena are predicted. The sign of the spin Hall conductance is modulated periodically by the external magnetic field, which means a possible application in the future. Furthermore, a resonant spin Hall conductance in the two-dimensional hole gas with a certain hole density at a typical magnetic field is indicated, which implies a likely way to firmly establish the intrinsic spin Hall effe…
In this letter we study the coherent electronic transport through a metallic nanowire with magnetic impurities. The spins of these impurities are considered as frozen to mimic a low temperature spin glass phase. The transport properties of the wire are derived from a numerical Landauer technique which provides the conductance of the wire as a function of the disorder configuration. We show that the correlation of conductance between two spin configurations provides a measure of the correlation between these spin configurations. This correlation corresponds to the mean field overlap in the abse…
Measurement and theory of the two-terminal conductance of monolayer and bilayer graphene in the quantum Hall regime are compared. We examine features of conductance as a function of gate voltage that allow monolayer, bilayer, and gapped samples to be distinguished, including N-shaped distortions of quantum Hall plateaus and conductance peaks and dips at the charge neutrality point. Generally good agreement is found between measurement and theory. Possible origins of discrepancies are discussed.
We study the energy spectrum and the quantized Hall conductance of electrons in a two-dimensional periodic potential with perpendicular magnetic field WITHOUT neglecting the coupling of the Landau bands. Remarkably, even for weak Landau band coupling significant changes in the Hall conductance compared to the one-band approximation of Hofstadter's butterfly are found. The principal deviations are the rearrangement of subbands and unexpected subband contributions to the Hall conductance.
We propose a scheme where transport measurements of charge current and its noise can be used to determine the spin Hall conductance in a four-terminal setup. Starting from the scattering formalism we express the spin current and spin Hall conductance in terms of spin-dependent transmission coefficients. These coefficients are then expressed in terms of charge current and noise. We use the scheme to characterize the spin injection efficiency of a ferromagnetic/semiconductor interface.
We propose a surface-edge state theory for half quantized Hall conductance of surface states in topological insulators. The gap opening of a single Dirac cone for the surface states in a weak magnetic field is demonstrated. We find a new surface state resides on the surface edges and carries chiral edge current, resulting in a half-quantized Hall conductance in a four-terminal setup. We also give a physical interpretation of the half quantized conductance by showing that this state is the product of splitting of a boundary bound state of massive Dirac fermions which carries a conductance quant…
We evaluate the distribution of Hall conductances in magnetic subbands of two-dimensional electron gas with Rashba spin-orbit (SO) coupling placed in a periodic potential and perpendicular magnetic field. In this semiconductor structure the spin-orbit coupling mixes the states of different magnetic subbands and changes the distribution of their Hall conductances in comparison with the case of spinless particles. The calculations were made for semiconductor structures with a weak ($AlGaAs/GaAs$) and relatively strong ($GaAs/InGaAs$) SO and Zeeman interactions. The Hall conductances of fully occ…
Following a previous work [Shen, Ma, Xie and Zhang, Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 256603 (2004)] on the resonant spin Hall effect, we present detailed calculations of the spin Hall conductance in two-dimensional quantum wells in a strong perpendicular magnetic field. The Rashba coupling, generated by spin-orbit interaction in wells lacking bulk inversion symmetry, introduces a degeneracy of Zeeman-split Landau levels at certain magnetic fields. This degeneracy, if occuring at the Fermi energy, will induce a resonance in the spin Hall conductance below a characteristic temperature of order of the Zeeman…
Topological states of matter are characterized by topological invariant, which are physical quantities whose values are quantized and do not depend on details of the measured system. Of these, the easiest to probe in experiments is the electrical Hall conductance, which is expressed in units of $e^2/h$ ($e$ the electron charge, $h$ the Planck's constant). In the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE), fractional quantized values of the electrical Hall conductance attest to topologically ordered states, which are states that carry quasi particles with fractional charge and anyonic statistics. An…
We study experimentally the reproducible conductance fluctuations between the quantum Hall plateaus in the conductance of two-terminal submicron silicon MOSFETs. For the dramatic fluctuations at the insulator-to-first-plateau transition we find a conductance distribution that is approximately uniform between zero and $e^2/h$. We point out that this is consistent with the prediction of random $S$-matrix theory for a conductor with single-channel leads in a magnetic field.
We investigate nonperturbatively the effect of a magnetic dopant impurity on the edge transport of a quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulator. We show that for a strongly coupled magnetic dopant located near the edge of a system, a pair of transmission anti-resonances appear. When the chemical potential is on resonance, interaction effects broaden the anti-resonance width with decreasing temperature, thus suppressing transport for both repulsive and moderately attractive interactions. Consequences for the recently observed QSH insulating phase of the $1$-T$^{\prime}$ of WTe$_2$ are briefly discussed.
We investigate the Hall conductance of a two-dimensional Chern insulator coupled to an environment causing gain and loss. Introducing a biorthogonal linear response theory, we show that sufficiently strong gain and loss lead to a characteristic non-analytical contribution to the Hall conductance. Near its onset, this contribution exhibits a universal power-law with a power 3/2 as a function of Dirac mass, chemical potential and gain strength. Our results pave the way for the study of non-Hermitian topology in electronic transport experiments.
We analyze the conductance fluctuations observed in the quantum Hall regime for a bulk two-dimensional electron system in a Corbino geometry. We find that characteristics like the power spectral density and the temperature dependence agree well with simple expectations for universal conductance fluctuations in metals, while the observed amplitude is reduced. In addition, the dephasing length $L_Φ\propto T^{-1/2}$, which governs the temperature dependence of the fluctuations, is surprisingly different from the scaling length $L_{sc}\propto T^{-1}$ governing the width of the quantum Hall plateau…
We study the impact of dynamical correlations on the electronic structure and coherent transport properties of Cu nanocontacts hosting a single magnetic impurity (Ni,Co,Fe) in the contact region. The strong dynamical correlations of the impurity 3d-electrons are fully taken into account by combining density functional calculations with a dynamical treatment of the impurity 3d-shell in the one-crossing approximation. We find that dynamical correlations give rise to the Kondo effect and lead to Fano features in the coherent transport characteristics similar to those observed in related experimen…
We consider the network model of the integer quantum Hall effect transition. By generalizing the real--space renormalization group procedure for the classical percolation to the case of quantum percolation, we derive a closed renormalization group (RG) equation for the universal distribution of conductance of the quantum Hall sample at the transition. We find an approximate solution of the RG equation and use it to calculate the critical exponent of the localization length and the central moments of the conductance distribution. The results obtained are compared with the results of recent nume…
Recently,a half-quantized Hall conductance (HQHC) plateau is experimentally observed in a semi-magnetic topological insulator heterostructure. However, the heterostructure is metallic with a nonzero longitudinal conductance, which contradicts the common belief that quantized Hall conductance is usually observed in insulators. In this work,we systematically study the surface transport of the semi-magnetic topological insulator with both gapped and gapless Dirac surfaces in the presence of dephasing process. In particular, we reveal that the HQHC is directly related to the half-quantized chiral cur…
We study a generic two-dimensional hopping model on a honeycomb lattice with strong spin-orbit coupling, without the requirement that the half-filled lattice be a Topological Insulator. For quarter-(or three-quarter) filling, we show that a state with a quantized Hall conductance generically arises in the presence of a Zeeman field of sufficient strength. We discuss the influence of Hubbard interactions and argue that spontaneous ferromagnetism (which breaks time-reversal) will occur, leading to a quantized anomalous Hall effect.
It is widely accepted that topological quantities are useful to describe quantum liquids in low dimensions. The (spin) Hall conductances are typical examples. They are expressed by the Chern numbers, which are topological invariants given by the Berry connections of the ground states. We present a topological description for the (spin) Hall conductances on a discretized Brillouin Zone. At the same time, it is quite efficient in practical numerical calculations for concrete models. We demonstrate its validity in a model with quantum phase transitions. Topological changes supplemented with the t…
The chiral surface electrons in the bulk quantum Hall effect probably form the first extended system in which conductance fluctuations can be calculated non-perturbatively in the presence of disorder. By use of the Kubo formula with appropriate boundary conditions, we calculate exactly the variance of conductance with non-perturbative methods. We find that the conductance fluctuations of this system are ``nonuniversal'' and the variance of the conductance scales in a very peculiar way. This result can be checked with exact computation using the Landauer-Buttiker formula and both methods show t…
Clean topological insulators exposed to a magnetic field develop Landau levels accompanied by a nonzero Hall conductivity for the infinite slab geometry. In this work we consider the case of disordered topological insulator nanowires and find, in contrast, that a zero Hall plateau emerges within a broad energy window close to the Dirac point. We numerically calculate the conductance and its distribution for a statistical ensemble of disordered nanowires, and use the conductance fluctuations to study the dependence of the insulating phase on system parameters, such as the nanowire length, disor…
We study the charge and spin transport in a two terminal graphene nanoribbon (GNR) decorated with random Gold (Au) adatoms using a Kane-Mele model. Two commonly used GNRs, that is, the armchair graphene nanoribbon (AGNR) and the zigzag graphene nanoribbon (ZGNR) are compared and contrasted, which shows that in presence of Au adatoms, a somewhat robust $2e^2/h$ conductance plateau occurs in the case of AGNR around the zero of the Fermi energy, while in ZGNR this plateau is fragile. We show that this flat plateau, having a conductance value $2e^2/h$, is not a hallmark signature of a topologicall…
We report on the formation of critical states in disordered graphene, at the origin of variable and unconventional transport properties in the quantum Hall regime, such as a zero-energy Hall conductance plateau in the absence of an energy bandgap and Landau level degeneracy breaking. By using efficient real-space transport methodologies, we compute both the dissipative and Hall conductivities of large size graphene sheets with random distribution of model single and double vacancies. By analyzing the scaling of transport coefficients with defect density, system size and magnetic length, we elu…
We report a detailed analytic investigation of the interplay between size quantization and local scattering centers in armchair graphene nanoribbons, as seen in the conductance. The scattering property of a local scattering center is dependent on if it is located on one sublattice (A-site impurity) or both (impurity situated at neighboring carbon atoms, A-B-site impurity). The A-site impurity scatters in a similar way as a localized impurity in a one-dimensional channel made from a two-dimensional electron gas. On the other hand, the A-B-site impurity introduces A- to B-sublattice scattering, …
This work presents an analytic angular differential cross section formula for the electromagnetic radiation field assisted electron scattering by %% was on impurities in semiconductors. These impurities are approximated with various model potentials. The scattered electrons are described by the well-known Volkov wave function, which has been used describe strong laser field matter interaction for more than half a century, %% I would remove this time reference for clarity which exactly describes the interaction of the electron with the external oscillating field. These calculations show that th…
We discuss the effect of magnetic impurities on the inelastic scattering and dephasing of electrons. Magnetic impurities mediate the energy exchange between electrons. This mechanism is especially effective at small energy transfers $E$ in the absence of Zeeman splitting, when the two-particle collision integral in the electron kinetic equation has a kernel $K\propto 1/E^2$ in a broad energy range. In a magnetic field, this mechanism is suppressed at $E$ below the Zeeman energy. Simultaneously, the Zeeman splitting of the impurity spin states reduces the electron dephasing rate, thus enhancing…
The conductance of a waveguide containing finite number of periodically placed identical point-like impurities is investigated. It has been calculated as a function of both the impurity strength and the number of impurities using the Landauer-Büttiker formula. In the case of few impurities the conductance is proportional to the number of the open channels $N$ of the empty waveguide and shows a regular staircase like behavior with step heights $\approx 2e^2/h$. For large number of impurities the influence of the band structure of the infinite periodic chain can be observed and the conductance i…
Assisted hopping effects in magnetic impurities and quantum dots are analyzed. The magnitude of the assisted hopping term in a quantum dot in the limit of large level spacing is comparable to other corrections induced by the electron-electron interactions. Assisted hopping leads to differences between conductance peaks associated to the same level, and, when the effect is sufficiently strong, to local pairing correlations.
The magnetic-induced orbital motion of quasiparticles affects the conductance properties of a hybrid strip of a quantum-anomalous-Hall topological material with induced superconductivity. We elucidate the scenario of topological NSN ideal junctions in presence of orbital magnetic motion, showing how it leads to a halved quantized conductance $0.5e^2/h$ even in absence of Majorana modes. The magnetic orbital effect favours Fermionic charged modes with finite wave numbers, in contradistinction to Majorana zero modes which are chargeless zero-energy modes with vanishing wave number. The bias sens…
We construct useful sets of one-particle states in the quantum Hall system based on the von Neumann lattice. Using the set of momentum states, we develop a field-theoretical formalism and apply the formalism to the system subjected to a periodic potential. The topological formula of the Hall conductance written by the winding number of propagator is generalized to Bloch electrons. The relation between the winding number and the Chern number is clarified.
We study numerically conductance fluctuations near the integer quantum Hall effect plateau transition. The system is presumed to be in a mesoscopic regime, with phase coherence length comparable to the system size. We focus on a two-terminal conductance G for square samples, considering both periodic and open boundary conditions transverse to the current. At the plateau transition, G is broadly distributed, with a distribution function close to uniform on the interval between zero and one in units of e^2/h. Our results are consistent with a recent experiment by Cobden and Kogan on a mesoscopic…
We obtain a ``mean field'' scaling flow of the longitudinal and the Hall conductivities in the fractional quantum Hall regime. Using the composite fermion picture and assuming that the composite fermions follow the Khmelnitskii-Pruisken scaling flow for the integer quantum Hall effect, the unstable fixed points which govern the transitions between different fractional quantum Hall states are identified. Distributions of the critical longitudinal and Hall conductivities at the unstable fixed points are obtained and implications of the results for the experiments on mesoscopic quantum Hall syste…
Mesoscopic fluctuations of two-port conductance and four-port resistance between Hall plateaus are studied within a realistic model for a two-dimensional electron gas in a perpendicular magnetic field and a smooth disordered potential. The two-port conductance distribution $P(g)$ is concave between $g=0$ and $g=1$ and is nearly flat between $g=0.2$ and $g=0.8$. These characteristics are consistent with recent observations. The distribution is found to be sharply peaked near the end-points $g=0$ and $g=1$. The distribution functions for the three independent resistances in a four-port Hall bar …
We study the extra term of particle current in a 2D k-cubic Rashba spin-orbit coupling system and the integer quantization of the Hall conductance in this system. We provide a correct formula of charge current in this system and the careful consideration of extra currents provides a stronger theoretical basis for the theory of the quantum Hall effect which has not been considered before. The non-trivial extra contribution to the particle current density and local conductivity, which originates from the cubic dependence on the momentum operator in the Hamiltonian, will have no effect on the int…
We investigate the ballistic electron transport in a monolayer graphene with configurational averaged impurities, located between two clean graphene leads. It is shown that the electron transmission are strongly dependent on the concentration of impurities and the incident energy. In turn, the conductance computed using the Landauer formalism shows a similar behavior to those found in experimental works as a function of the applied voltage for different concentrations of impurities in the limit of low temperatures. In the limit of zero bias voltage, the conductance shows a minimum value which …
The impurity-related electron transport through a double quantum dot (QD) Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interferometer is theoretically studied, by considering impurities coupled to the QDs in the interferometer arms. When investigating the linear conductance spectra \emph{vs} the impurity levels, we show that the impurities influence the electron transport in a nontrivial way, since their suppressing or enhancing the electron tunneling. A presented single-level impurity leads to the appearance of Fano lineshapes in the conductance spectra in the absence of magnetic flux, with the positions of Fano antir…
