Let $Γ$ be a discrete group of isometries acting on the complex hyperbolic $n$-space $\mathbb{H}^n_\mathbb{C}$. In this note, we prove that if $Γ$ is convex-cocompact, torsion-free, and the critical exponent $δ(Γ)$ is strictly lesser than $2$, then the complex manifold $\mathbb{H}^n_\mathbb{C}/Γ$ is Stein. We also discuss several related conjectures.
These are lectures on discrete groups of isometries of complex hyperbolic spaces, aimed to discuss interactions between the function theory on complex hyperbolic manifolds and the theory of discrete groups.
This is a survey of higher-dimensional Kleinian groups, i.e., discrete isometry groups of the hyperbolic n-space for n greater than 3. Our main emphasis is on the topological and geometric aspects of higher-dimensional Kleinian groups and their contrast with the discrete groups of isometry of the hyperbolic 3-space.
In this note we employ infinite ergodic theory to derive estimates for the algebraic growth rate of the Poincaré series for a Kleinian group at its critical exponent of convergence.
We prove that Kleinian groups whose limit sets are Cantor sets of Hausdorff dimension $<1$ are free. On the other hand we construct for any $ε>0$ examples of non-free purely hyperbolic Kleinian groups whose limit set is a Cantor set of Hausdorff dimension $<1+ε$.
Any action of a group $Γ$ on $\mathbb H^3$ by isometries yields a class in degree three bounded cohomology by pulling back the volume cocycle to $Γ$. We prove that the bounded cohomology of finitely generated Kleinian groups without parabolic elements distinguishes the asymptotic geometry of geometrically infinite ends of hyperbolic $3$-manifolds. That is, if two homotopy equivalent hyperbolic manifolds with infinite volume and without parabolic cusps have different geometrically infinite end invariants, then they define a $2$ dimensional subspace of bounded cohomology. Our techniques apply to…
We prove that the rank problem is decidable in the class of torsion-free word-hyperbolic Kleinian groups. We also show that every group in this class has only finitely many Nielsen equivalence classes of generating sets of a given cardinality.
We review the theory of splittings of hyperbolic groups, as determined by the topology of the boundary. We give explicit examples of certain phenomena and then use this to describe limit sets of Kleinian groups up to homeomorphism.
We prove that the class of convex-cocompact Kleinian groups is quasi-isometrically rigid. We also establish that a word hyperbolic group with a planar boundary different from the sphere is virtually a convex-cocompact Kleinian group provided that its boundary has Ahlfors regular conformal dimension strictly less than $2$ or if it acts geometrically on a CAT(0) cube complex.
We show that up to commensurability there are only finitely many cocompact arithmetic Kleinian groups generated by rotations. This implies, in particular, that there exist only finitely many conjugacy classes of cocompact two generated arithmetic Kleinian groups. The proof of the main result is based on a generalized Gromov--Guth inequality and bounds for the hyperbolic and tube volumes of the quotient orbifolds.
We prove that if the fundamental group of an orientable finite volume hyperbolic 3-manifold has finite index in the reflection group of a right-angled ideal polyhedra in $\mathbb{H}^3$ then it has a co-final tower of finite sheeted covers with positive rank gradient. The manifolds we provide are also known to have co-final towers of covers with zero rank gradient.
For a compact, oriented, hyperbolic $n$-manifold $(M,g)$, realised as $M= Γ\backslash \mathbb{H}^{n}$ where $Γ$ is a torsion-free cocompact subgroup of $SO(n,1)$, we establish and study a relationship between differential geometric cohomology on $M$ and algebraic invariants of the group $Γ$. In particular for $\mathbb{F}$ an irreducible $SO(n,1)$-module, we show that the group cohomology with coefficients $H^{\bullet}(Γ, \mathbb{F})$ is isomorphic to the cohomology of an appropriate projective BGG complex on $M$. This yields the geometric interpretation that $H^{\bullet}(Γ, \mathbb{F})$ parame…
We examine residual properties of word-hyperbolic groups, adapting a method introduced by Darren Long to study the residual properties of Kleinian groups.
We study the action of a relatively hyperbolic group on its boundary, by methods of symbolic dynamics. Under a condition on the parabolic subgroups, we show that this dynamical system is finitely presented. We give examples where this condition is satisfied, including geometrically finite kleinian groups.
We prove that every finitely presentable group G arises as the fundamental group of an orientable 3-complex obtained from a hyperbolic link complement, by coning each boundary torus of the link exterior to a distinct point. We define the closed-link-genus, clg(G), of any finitely presentable group G, which completely characterizes fundamental groups of closed orientable 3-manifolds: clg(G)=0 if and only if G is the fundamental group of a closed orientable 3-manifold. Moreover clg(G) gives an upper bound for the concept `genus(G)' of genus defined earlier by Aitchison and Reeves, and in turn is…
We prove the existence of Cannon-Thurston maps for Kleinian groups corresponding to pared manifolds whose boundary is incompressible away from cusps. We also describe the structure of these maps in terms of ending laminations.
Thurston and Calegari-Dunfield showed that the fundamental group of some tautly foliated hyperbolic 3-manifold acts on the circle in a distinctive way that the action preserves some structure of S^1, so-called a circle lamination. Indeed, a large class of Kleinian groups acts on the circle preserving a circle lamination. In this paper, we are concerned with the converse problem that a group acting on the circle with at least two invariant circle laminations is Kleinian. We prove that a subgroup of the orientation preserving circle homeomorphism group is a Fuchsian group whose quotient orbifold…
In this paper, we prove a limit set intersection theorem in relatively hyperbolic groups. Our approach is based on a study of dynamical quasiconvexity of relatively quasiconvex subgroups. Using dynamical quasiconvexity, many well-known results on limit sets of geometrically finite Kleinian groups are derived in general convergence groups. We also establish dynamical quasiconvexity of undistorted subgroups in finitely generated groups with nontrivial Floyd boundary.
We propose several common extensions of the classes of Anosov subgroups and geometrically finite Kleinian groups among discrete subgroups of semisimple Lie groups. We relativize various dynamical and coarse geometric characterizations of Anosov subgroups given in our earlier work, extending the class from intrinsically hyperbolic to relatively hyperbolic subgroups. We prove implications and equivalences between the various relativizations.
Let $Γ$ be a non-elementary Kleinian group and $H<Γ$ a finitely generated, proper subgroup. We prove that if $Γ$ has finite co-volume, then the profinite completions of $H$ and $Γ$ are not isomorphic. If $H$ has finite index in $Γ$, then there is a finite group onto which $H$ maps but $Γ$ does not. These results streamline the existing proofs that there exist full-sized groups that are profinitely rigid in the absolute sense. They build on a circleof ideas that can be used to distinguish among the profinite completions of subgroups of finite index in other contexts, e.g. limit groups. We const…
We obtain a criterion for quasiconvexity of a subgroup of an amalgamated free product of two word hyperbolic groups along a virtually cyclic subgroup. The result provides a method of constructing new word hyperbolic group in class (Q), that is such that all their finitely generated subgroups are quasiconvex. It is known that free groups, hyperbolic surface groups and most 3-dimensional Kleinian groups have property (Q). We also give some applications of our results to one-relator groups and exponential groups.
We prove that a group has a DF domain if and only if has a Double Dirichlet domain. We give a good describtion of the side-paring transformation of such groups. In particular, those not fixing infinity have a common eigenvector. We also give other results on Kleinian and Fuchsian groups.
We construct arithmetic Kleinian groups that are profinitely rigid in the absolute sense: each is distinguished from all other finitely generated, residually finite groups by its set of finite quotients. The Bianchi group $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{Z}[ω])$ with $ω^2+ω+1=0$ is rigid in this sense. Other examples include the non-uniform lattice of minimal co-volume in $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{C})$ and the fundamental group of the Weeks manifold (the closed hyperbolic $3$-manifold of minimal volume).
We give an overview of the theory of Cannon-Thurston maps which forms one of the links between the complex analytic and hyperbolic geometric study of Kleinian groups. We also briefly sketch connections to hyperbolic subgroups of hyperbolic groups and end with some open questions.
In this note, we provide a description of the structure of homomorphisms from a finitely generated group to any torsion-free (3-dimensional) Kleinian group with uniformly bounded finite covolume. This is analogous to the Jorgensen-Thurston Theorem in hyperbolic geometry.
A Kleinian group $Γ< \mathrm{Isom}(\mathbb H^3)$ is called convex cocompact if any orbit of $Γ$ in $\mathbb H^3$ is quasiconvex or, equivalently, $Γ$ acts cocompactly on the convex hull of its limit set in $\partial \mathbb H^3$. Subgroup stability is a strong quasiconvexity condition in finitely generated groups which is intrinsic to the geometry of the ambient group and generalizes the classical quasiconvexity condition above. Importantly, it coincides with quasiconvexity in hyperbolic groups and convex cocompactness in mapping class groups. Using the Morse boundary, we develop an equivalent…
Suppose that all hyperbolic groups are residually finite. The following statements follow: In relatively hyperbolic groups with peripheral structures consisting of finitely generated nilpotent subgroups, quasiconvex subgroups are separable; Geometrically finite subgroups of non-uniform lattices in rank one symmetric spaces are separable; Kleinian groups are subgroup separable. We also show that LERF for finite volume hyperbolic 3-manifolds would follow from LERF for closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds. The method is to reduce, via combination and filling theorems, the separability of a quasiconvex s…
We study Nielsen equivalence classes of generating pairs of Kleinian groups and HNN-extensions. We establish the following facts: - Hyperbolic 2-bridge knot groups have infinitely many Nielsen classes of generating pairs. - For any natural number N there is a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold whose fundamental group has N distinct Nielsen classes of generating pairs. - Two pairs of elements of a fundamental group of an HNN-extension are Nielsen equivalent iff they are so for the obvious reasons.
We introduce a new kind of action of a relatively hyperbolic group on a CAT(0) cube complex, called a relatively geometric action. We provide an application to characterize finite-volume Kleinian groups in terms of action on cube complexes, analogous to the results of Markovic and Haïssinsky in the closed case.
Let $Γ$ be a relatively hyperbolic group and let $μ$ be an admissible symmetric finitely supported probability measure on $Γ$. We extend Floyd-Ancona type inequalities up to the spectral radius of $μ$. We then show that when the parabolic subgroups are virtually abelian, the Martin boundary of the induced random walk on $Γ$ is stable in the sense of Picardello and Woess. We also define a notion of spectral degenerescence along parabolic subgroups and give a criterion for strong stability of the Martin boundary in terms of spectral degenerescence. We prove that this criterion is always satisfie…
We continue investigations started by Lakeland on Fuchsian and Kleinian groups which have a Dirichlet fundamental domain that also is a Ford domain in the upper half-space model of hyperbolic $2$- and $3$-space, or which have a Dirichlet domain with multiple centers. Such domains are called DF-domains and Double Dirichlet domains respectively. Making use of earlier obtained concrete formulas for the bisectors defining the Dirichlet domain of center $i \in \HQ^2$ or center $j \in \HQ^3$, we obtain a simple condition on the matrix entries of the side-pairing transformations of the fundamental do…
Let $G$ be a group and $H$ a subgroup of $G$. This note introduces an equivalent definition of hyperbolic embedded subgroup based on Bowditch's approach to relatively hyperbolic groups in terms of fine graphs.
We define relatively quasiconvex subgroups of relatively hyperbolic groups in the sense of Osin and show that such subgroups have expected properties. Also we state several definitions equivalent to the definition of relatively hyperbolic groups in the sense of Osin.
The aim of this note is to give the simplest possible proof that Mapping Class Groups of closed hyperbolic surfaces are acylindrically hyperbolic, and more specifically that their curve graphs are hyperbolic and that pseudo-Anosovs act on them as loxodromic WPDs.
We study the Bowditch boundaries of relatively hyperbolic group pairs, focusing on the case where there are no cut points. We show that if $(G,\mathcal{P})$ is a rigid relatively hyperbolic group pair whose boundary embeds in $S^2$, then the action on the boundary extends to a convergence group action on $S^2$. More generally, if the boundary is connected and planar with no cut points, we show that every element of $\mathcal{P}$ is virtually a surface group. This conclusion is consistent with the conjecture that such a group $G$ is virtually Kleinian. We give numerous examples to show the nece…
The following short note provides an alternative proof of a result of Coornaert: namely, that given a non-elementary word-hyperbolic group $G$ with a finite generating set $X$, there exist constants $λ,D > 1$ such that \[ D^{-1}λ^n \leq |B_{G,X}(n)| \leq D λ^n \] for all $n \geq 0$, where $B_{G,X}(n)$ is the ball of radius $n$ in the Cayley graph $Γ(G,X)$.
For a group G relatively hyperbolic to a family of residually finite groups satisfying the Farrell-Jones conjecture, we reduce the solution of the Farrell-Jones conjecture for G to the case of certain nice cyclic extensions in G.
We determine explicit formulas for the bisectors used in constructing a Dirichlet fundamental domain in hyperbolic two and three space. They are compared with the isometric spheres employed in the construction of a Ford domain and used to find a finite set of generators for discrete groups of finite covolume. Applications are given to Fuchsian groups, Kleinian groups, including the Bianchi groups, and for the construction of a finite set of generators of the unit group of the integral group ring of a finite nilpotent group. An easy implementable algorithm, DAFC, is also given and used in the s…
We prove that for a relatively hyperbolic group G there is a sequence of relatively hyperbolic proper quotients such that their growth rates converge to the growth rate of G. Under natural assumptions, the same conclusion holds for the critical exponent of a cusp-uniform action of G on a hyperbolic metric space. As a corollary, we obtain that the critical exponent of a torsion-free geometrically finite Kleinian group can be arbitrarily approximated by those of quotient groups. This resolves a question of Dal'bo-Peigné-Picaud-Sambusetti. Our approach is based on the study of Patterson-Sullivan …
Functions of hyperbolic type encode representations on real or complex hyperbolic spaces, usually infinite-dimensional. These notes set up the complex case. As applications, we prove the existence of a non-trivial deformation family of representations of SU(1,n) and of its infinite-dimensional kin Isom(H^\infty_C). We further classify all the self-representations of Isom(H^\infty_C) that satisfy a compatibility condition for the subgroup Isom(H^\infty_R). It turns out in particular that translation lengths and Cartan arguments determine each other for these representations. In the real case, w…
