Graphene is a two-dimensional layer of carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb lattice, whose outstanding properties makes it an excellent material for future electronic and photonic terahertz (THz) devices. In this work, we design hybrid graphene metasurfaces by using a monolayer graphene placed over a metallic grating, operating in the THz frequency range. Perfect absorption can be achieved at the resonance, where the electric field is greatly enhanced due to the coupling between the graphene and the grating plasmonic responses. The enhancement of the electric field along the graphene monolayer, as well as the large nonlinear conductivity of graphene, can dramatically boost the nonlinear response of the proposed THz device. In addition, the presented enhanced nonlinear effects can be significantly tuned by varying the doping level of graphene. The proposed structure can be used in the design of THz-frequency generators and all-optical processors.
The VO2-based THz metasurface optical switching threshold is reduced by more than five orders of magnitude to 0.32-0.4 W/cm2 due to the supply of a subthreshold electric current. Moreover, additional deposition of Au nanoparticles can further reduce the threshold by 30% due to plasmonic effects. The proposed designs and a combined approach to controlling the sub-THz/THz transmission by electric current and light make it possible to overcome the existing bottleneck in design of dynamically programmable THz mirror array based on metasurfaces.
The effect of terahertz (THz) pulse generation has revolutionized broadband coherent spectroscopy and imaging at THz frequencies. However, THz pulses typically lack spatial structure, whereas structured beams are becoming essential for advanced spectroscopy applications. Non-linear optical metasurfaces with nanoscale THz emitters can provide a solution by defining the beam structure at the generation stage. We develop a non-linear InAs metasurface consisting of nanoscale optical resonators for simultaneous generation and structuring of THz beams. We find that THz pulse generation in the resona…
We present a complementary THz metasurface realised with Niobium thin film which displays a quality factor Q=54 and a fully switchable behaviour as a function of the temperature. The switching behaviour and the high quality factor are due to a careful design of the metasurface aimed at maximising the ohmic losses when the Nb is above the critical temperature and minimising the radiative coupling. The superconductor allows the operation of the cavity with an high Q and inductive elements with an high aspect ratio. Comparison with three dimensional finite element simulations highlights the cruci…

An efficient reflective elastic metasurface with tunable focusing point is proposed. The metasurface is based on electric resonators embedded in a stretchable elastic substrate. The focal length is controlled by mean of the stretching applied applied to the sample. The results predicted by theory and numerical simulations are experimentally verified. Our proposal shows that smart engineering elastic metamaterials are an effective platform for new functional devices based on metamaterials.
Terahertz (THz) chirality pursues customizable manipulation from narrowband to broadband. While conventional THz chirality is restricted by non-negligible linewidth and unable to handle narrowband well. Recently, the concept "quasi bound states in continuum" (quasi-BIC) is introduced to optics resonance system whose the quality factor can be extremely high with the ultra-low radiative loss, thus providing a conceptual feasibility for wave control with ultra-narrow linewidth. Herein, we construct quasi-BIC in a planar all-silicon THz metasurface with in-plane C2 and mirror symmetries breaking. …
Recent emergence of metasurfaces has enabled the development of ultra-thin flat optical components through different wavefront shaping techniques at various wavelengths. However, due to the non-adaptive nature of conventional metasurfaces, the focal point of the resulting optics needs to be fixed at the design stage, thus severely limiting its reconfigurability and applicability. In this paper, we aim to overcome such constraint by presenting a flat reflective component that can be reprogrammed to focus terahertz waves at a desired point in the near-field region. To this end, we first propose …
As two-dimensional metamaterials, metasurfaces open up new avenues for designing static planar optics. The existing dynamic devices rarely utilized the polarization manipulation capability of metasurfaces. Here, we demonstrate an electrically tunable multifunctional metasurface in the visible range by integrating birefringent liquid crystals (LCs) with all-dielectric metasurfaces based on a novel packaging scheme. By combining the helicity-dependent geometric phase of the metasurface and…

Here we make use of vanadium dioxide (VO2) to design a bifunctional metasurface working at the same targeted frequency. With the increase of temperature, the functionality of the designed metasurface can switch from a multi-channel retroreflector to a perfect absorber, caused by the phase transition of VO2 from insulator to conductor. Different from traditional bifunctional metasurfaces designed by simple composition of two functionalities, our proposed bifunctional metasurface is based on the interaction between two functionalities. The device shows good potential for the combination of wavef…

In this Letter, we theoretically demonstrate that stacks of metallic wire-grid metasurfaces possessing specific polarization properties have the ability to induce tunable Fano resonances. The developed original model - combining a circulating field approach together with an extended Jones formalism - reveals the underlying principle that gives rise to the polarization-induced Fano resonances. The theoretical frame is validated in an experimental pro…

The nonlinear responses of different materials provide useful mechanisms for optical switching, low noise amplification, and harmonic frequency generation. However, the nonlinear processes usually have an extremely weak nature and require high input power to be excited. To alleviate this severe limitation, we propose new designs of ultrathin nonlinear metasurfaces composed of patterned graphene micro-ribbons to significantly enhance third harmonic generation (THG) at far-infrared and terahertz (THz) frequencies. The incident wave is tightly confined and significantly boosted along the surface …
Nonlinear light sources are central to a myriad of applications, driving a quest for their miniaturisation down to the nanoscale. In this quest, nonlinear metasurfaces hold a great promise, as they enhance nonlinear effects through their resonant photonic environment and high refractive index, such as in high-index dielectric metasurfaces. However, despite the sub-diffractive operation of dielectric metasurfaces at the fundamental wave, this condition is not fulfilled for the nonlinearly generated harmonic waves, thereby all nonlinear metasurfaces to date emit multiple diffractive beams. Here,…
High quality factor resonances are extremely promising for designing ultra-sensitive refractive index label-free sensors since it allows intense interaction between electromagnetic waves and the analyte material. Metamaterial and plasmonic sensing has recently attracted a lot of attention due to subwavelength confinement of electromagnetic fields in the resonant structures. However, the excitation of high quality factor resonances in these systems has been a challenge. We excite an order of magnitude higher quality factor resonances in planar terahertz metamaterials that we exploit for ultrase…

We present a graphene-based metasurface that can be actively tuned between different regimes of operation, such as anomalous beam steering and focusing, cloaking and illusion optics, by applying electrostatic gating without modifying the geometry of the metasurface. The metasurface is designed by placing graphene nano-ribbons (GNRs) on a dielectric cavity resonator, where interplay between geometric plasmon resonances in the ribbons and Fabry-Perot resonances in the cavity is used to achieve 2$π$ phase shift. As a proof of the concept, we demonstrate that wavefront of the field reflected from …
Metasurfaces with tunable spatial phase functions could benefit numerous applications. Currently, most approaches to tuning rely on mechanical stretching which cannot control phase locally, or by modulating the refractive index to exploit rapid phase changes with the drawback of also modulating amplitude. Here, we propose a method to realize phase modulation at subwavelength length scales while maintaining unity amplitude. Our device is inspired by an asymmetric Fabry-Perot resonator, with pixels comprising a scattering nanopost on top of a distributed Bragg reflector, capable of providing a n…
We demonstrate a terahertz (THz) frequency comb that is flexible in terms of its frequency range and the number and spacing of comb lines. We use a combination of near-infrared laser diodes, phase modulation and opto-electronic frequency conversion. The THz comb lines are characterized to be < 10 MHz by resolving the pressure dependent collisional broadening of an ammonia molecule rotational mode.
In this paper, we will introduce THz graphene antennas that strongly enhance the emission rate of quantum systems at specific frequencies. The tunability of these antennas can be used to selectively enhance individual spectral features. We will show as an example that any weak transition in the spectrum of coronene can become the dominant contribution. This selective and tunable enhancement establishes a new class of graphene-based THz devices, which will find applications in sensors, novel light sources, spectroscopy, and quantum communication devices.
All-dielectric metasurfaces provide unique solutions for advanced wavefront manipulation of light with complete control of amplitude and phase at sub-wavelength scales. One limitation, however, for most of these devices is the lack of any post-fabrication tunability of their response. To break this limit, a promising approach is employing phase-change-materials (PCM), which provide a fast, low energy and non-volatile means to endow metasurfaces with a switching mechanism. In this regard, great advancements have been done in the mid infrared and near infrared spectrum using different chalcogeni…
Recently, metasurfaces have gained popularity due to their ability to offer a spatially varying phase response, low intrinsic losses and high transmittance. The metasurface consists of an array of sub-wavelength silicon cross resonators made of a high refractive index material on substrates such as sapphire and CaF$_2$ that are transparent at IR-THz spectral range. With these substrates, it is possibl…
Second harmonic generation (SHG) is a coherent nonlinear phenomenon that plays an important role in laser color conversion. This article presents a novel approach for designing dual-band absorbers based on graphene and metallic metasurfaces for terahertz and mid-infrared regimes, respectively. The absorbers are composed of a two-dimensional (2D) array of square patches deposited on a dielectric film terminated by a metal plate. Using an analytical circuit model, we obtain closed-form relations for different parameters of the structure to achieve the dual-band absorber. Two absorption bands with obtained absorptivity of 98% at 0.55 and 1.54 THz for the graphene-based structure and 7 and 25 THz for the metallic-based…
We demonstrate a novel scheme to dramatically enhance both the second- and third-harmonic generation in a graphene-insulator-graphene metasurface. The key underlying feature of our approach is the existence of a double-resonance phenomenon, namely the metasurface is designed to possess fundamental plasmon resonances at both the fundamental frequency and the higher harmonic. In particular, this dual resonant field enhancement at the two optical frequencies, combined with a favorable spatial overlap of the optical near-fields, lead to the increase of the generated higher harmonic by several orde…
We develop a method to control the group delay of electromagnetic waves continuously using a doubly resonant metasurface. The method is based on the dependences of i) the group velocity in a medium featuring two resonance lines on the resonance linewidths and ii) the resonance linewidth of a metasurface composed of split-ring resonators on an incidence angle of electromagnetic wave. To verify this method for group-delay control, we design a terahertz metasurface composed of two split-ring resonators with different resonance frequencies and numerically analyze the transmission characteristic of…

It is based on a bifacial metasurface made of BP patch periodic arrays separated by a thin dielectric layer. Broadband CPA bandwidth is realized due to the ultrathin thickness of the proposed device and the extraordinary properties of BP. The superimposed metasurface structures were designed using finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations and fabricated using a photolithogr…
The active and nonlinear graphene properties are limited due to weak light matter interaction between the ultrathin graphene and the incident light. In this work, we present enhanced nonlinear effects at the low terahertz (THz) range by designing a new patterned graphene hyperbolic metamaterial (GHMM). More specifically, it is demonstrated that the third harmonic generation (THG) can be significantly enhanced by the proposed GHMM due to the field enhancement at the resonance as well as the supported slow light response that fosters strong light matter interaction.
The efficient amplification and lasing of electromagnetic radiation at terahertz (THz) frequencies is a non-trivial task achieved mainly by quantum cascade laser configurations with limited tunability and narrowband functionality. There is a strong need of compact and efficient THz electromagnetic sources with reconfigurable operation in a broad frequency range. Photoexcited graphene can act as the gain medium to produce coherent radiation at low THz frequencies but its response is very weak due to its ultrathin thickness. In this work, we demonstrate an alternative design to achieve efficient…
