Over the last few years, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) were successfully adopted in numerous domains to solve various image-related tasks, ranging from simple classification to fine borders annotation. Tracking seismic horizons is no different, and there are a lot of papers proposing the usage of such models to avoid time-consuming hand-picking. Unfortunately, most of them are (i) either trained on synthetic data, which can't fully represent the complexity of subterranean structures, (ii) trained and tested on the same cube, or (iii) lack reproducibility and precise descriptions of the model-building process. With all that in mind, the main contribution of this paper is an open-sourced research of applying binary segmentation approach to the task of horizon detection on multiple real seismic cubes with a focus on inter-cube generalization of the predictive model.
The interpretation of seismic data is vital for characterizing sediments' shape in areas of geological study. In seismic interpretation, deep learning becomes useful for reducing the dependence on handcrafted facies segmentation geometry and the time required to study geological areas. This work presents a Deep Neural Network for Facies Segmentation (DNFS) to obtain state-of-the-art results for seismic facies segmentation. DNFS is trained using a combination of cross-entropy and Jaccard loss functions. Our results show that DNFS obtains highly detailed predictions for seismic facies segmentati…

The ground motion prediction equation is commonly used to predict the seismic intensity distribution. However, it is not easy to apply this method to seismic distributions affected by underground plate structures, which are commonly known as abnormal seismic distributions. This study proposes a hybrid of regression and classification approaches using neural networks. The proposed model treats the distributions as 2-dimensional data like an image. Our method can accurately predict seismic intensity distributions, even abnormal distributions.

Detecting a specific horizon in seismic images is a valuable tool for geological interpretation. Because hand-picking the locations of the horizon is a time-consuming process, automated computational methods were developed starting three decades ago. Older techniques for such picking include interpolation of control points however, in recent years neural networks have been used for this task. Until now, most networks trained on small patches from larger images. This limits the networks ability to learn from large-scale geologic structures. Moreover, currently available networks and training st…
Seismic data processing plays a major role in seismic exploration as it conditions much of the seismic interpretation performance. In this context, generating reliable post-stack seismic data depends also on disposing of an efficient pre-stack noise attenuation tool. Here we tackle ground roll noise, one of the most challenging and common noises observed in pre-stack seismic data. Since ground roll is characterized by relative low frequencies and high amplitudes, most commonly used approaches for its suppression are based on frequency-amplitude filters for ground roll characteristic bands. How…
Seismic image analysis plays a crucial role in a wide range of industrial applications and has been receiving significant attention. One of the essential challenges of seismic imaging is detecting subsurface salt structure which is indispensable for identification of hydrocarbon reservoirs and drill path planning. Unfortunately, exact identification of large salt deposits is notoriously difficult and professional seismic imaging often requires expert human interpretation of salt bodies. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been successfully applied in many fields, and several attempts hav…

In recent years, Deep Neural Networks were successfully adopted in numerous domains to solve various image-related tasks, ranging from simple classification to fine borders annotation. Naturally, many researches proposed to use it to solve geological problems. Unfortunately, many of the seismic processing tools were developed years before the era of machine learning, including the most popular SEG-Y data format for storing seismic cubes. Its slow loading speed heavily hampers experimentation speed, which is essential for getting acceptable results. Worse yet, there is no widely-used format for…

Traditional physics-based approaches to infer sub-surface properties such as full-waveform inversion or reflectivity inversion are time-consuming and computationally expensive. We present a deep-learning technique that eliminates the need for these computationally complex methods by posing the problem as one of domain transfer. Our solution is based on a deep convolutional generative adversarial network and dramatically reduces computation time. Training based on two different types of synthetic data produced a neural network that generates realistic velocity models when applied to a real data…

Neural-networks have seen a surge of interest for the interpretation of seismic images during the last few years. Network-based learning methods can provide fast and accurate automatic interpretation, provided there are sufficiently many training labels. We provide an introduction to the field aimed at geophysicists that are familiar with the framework of forward modeling and inversion. We explain the similarities and differences between deep networks to other geophysical inverse problems and show their utility in solving problems such as lithology interpolation between wells, horizon tracking…
In this project, a state-of-the-art deep convolution neural network (DCNN) is presented to segment seismic images for salt detection below the earth's surface. Detection of salt location is very important for starting mining. Hence, a seismic image is used to detect the exact salt location under the earth's surface. However, precisely detecting the exact location of salt deposits is difficult. Therefore, professional seismic imaging still requires expert human interpretation of salt bodies. This leads to very subjective, highly variable renderings. Hence, to create the most accurate seismic im…

Deep learning-based models, such as convolutional neural networks, have advanced various segments of computer vision. However, this technology is rarely applied to seismic shot gather noise localization problem. This letter presents an investigation on the effectiveness of a multi-scale feature-fusion-based network for seismic shot-gather noise localization. Herein, we describe the following: (1) the construction of a real-world dataset of seismic noise localization based on 6,500 seismograms; (2) a multi-scale feature-fusion-based detector that uses the MobileNet combined with the Feature Pyr…
One of the risks of large-scale geologic carbon sequestration is the potential migration of fluids out of the storage formations. Accurate and fast detection of this fluids migration is not only important but also challenging, due to the large subsurface uncertainty and complex governing physics. Traditional leakage detection and monitoring techniques rely on geophysical observations including seismic. However, the resulting accuracy of these methods is limited because of indirect information they provide requiring expert interpretation, therefore yielding in-accurate estimates of leakage rate…

Geologic interpretation of large seismic stacked or migrated seismic images can be a time-consuming task for seismic interpreters. Neural network based semantic segmentation provides fast and automatic interpretations, provided a sufficient number of example interpretations are available. Networks that map from image-to-image emerged recently as powerful tools for automatic segmentation, but standard implementations require fully interpreted examples. Generating training labels for large images manually is time consuming. We introduce a partial loss-function and labeling strategies such that n…
Machine learning and, more specifically, deep learning algorithms have seen remarkable growth in their popularity and usefulness in the last years. This is arguably due to three main factors: powerful computers, new techniques to train deeper networks and larger datasets. Although the first two are readily available in modern computers and ML libraries, the last one remains a challenge for many domains. It is a fact that big data is a reality in almost all fields nowadays, and geosciences are not an exception. However, to achieve the success of general-purpose applications such as ImageNet - f…
Deep Learning-based models such as Convolutional Neural Networks, have led to significant advancements in several areas of computing applications. Seismogram quality assurance is a relevant Geophysics task, since in the early stages of seismic processing, we are required to identify and fix noisy sail lines. This dataset is used to train a CNN classifier for seismic shot-gathers quality prediction.…

With the increased size and complexity of seismic surveys, manual labeling of seismic facies has become a significant challenge. Application of automatic methods for seismic facies interpretation could significantly reduce the manual labor and subjectivity of a particular interpreter present in conventional methods. A recently emerged group of methods is based on deep neural networks. These approaches are data-driven and require large labeled datasets for network training. We apply a deep convolutional autoencoder for unsupervised seismic facies classification, which does not require manually …
