Current and upcoming radio telescopes are being designed with increasing sensitivity to detect new and mysterious radio sources of astrophysical origin. While this increased sensitivity improves the likelihood of discoveries, it also makes these instruments more susceptible to the deleterious effects of Radio Frequency Interference (RFI). The challenge posed by RFI is exacerbated by the high data-rates achieved by modern radio telescopes, which require real-time processing to keep up with the data. Furthermore, the high data-rates do not allow for permanent storage of observations at high resolution. Offline RFI mitigation is therefore not possible anymore. The real-time requirement makes RFI mitigation even more challenging because, on one side, the techniques used for mitigation need to be fast and simple, and on the other side they also need to be robust enough to cope with just a partial view of the data.
The Apertif Radio Transient System (ARTS) is the real-time, time-domain, transient detection instrument of the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT), processing 73 Gb of data per second. Even with a deep learning classifier, the ARTS pipeline requires state-of-the-art real-time RFI mitigation to reduce the number of false-positive detections. Our solution to this challenge is RFIm, a high-performance, open-source, tuned, and extensible RFI mitigation library. The goal of this library is to provide users with RFI mitigation routines that are designed to run in real-time on many-core accelerators, such as Graphics Processing Units, and that can be highly-tuned to achieve code and performance portability to different hardware platforms and scientific use-cases. Results on the ARTS show that we can achieve real-time RFI mitigation, with a minimal impact on the total execution time of the search pipeline, and considerably reduce the number of false-positives.
Context. Apertif is a multi-beam receiver system for the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope that operates at 1.1-1.5 GHz, which overlaps with various radio services, resulting in contamination of astronomical signals with radio-frequency interference (RFI). Aims. We analyze approaches to mitigate Apertif interference and design an automated detection procedure for its imaging mode. Using this approach, we present long-term RFI detection results of over 300 Apertif observations. Methods. Our approach is based on the AOFlagger detection approach. We introduce several new features, including wa…
This paper presents an overview of methods for mitigating radio frequency interference (RFI) in radio science data. The primary purpose of mitigation is to assist observatories to take useful data outside frequency bands allocated to the Science Services (RAS and EESS): mitigation should not be needed within Passive bands. Mitigation methods may be introduced at a variety of points within the data acquisition system in order to lessen the RFI intensity and to limit the damage it does. These methods range from proactive methods to change the local RFI environment by means of regulatory manners,…
Several post-detection approaches to the mitigation of radio-frequency interference (RFI) are compared by applying them to the strong RFI from the Iridium satellites. These provide estimates for the desired signal in the presence of RFI, by exploiting distinguishing characteristics of the RFI, such as its polarization, statistics, and periodicity. Our data are dynamic spectra with full Stokes parameters and 1 ms time resolution. Moreover, since most man-made RFI is strongly polarized, we use the data to compare its unpolarized component with its Stokes I. This approach on its own reduces the R…
We investigate the effectiveness of the statistical radio frequency interference (RFI) mitigation technique spectral kurtosis (SK) in the face of simulated realistic RFI signals. SK estimates the kurtosis of a collection of M power values in a single channel and provides a detection metric that is able to discern between human-made RFI and incoherent astronomical signals of interest. We test the ability of SK to flag signals with various representative modulation types, data rates, duty cycles, and carrier frequencies. We flag with various accumulation lengths M and implement multi-scale SK, w…
Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) is a growing concern in the radio astronomy community. Single-dish telescopes are particularly susceptible to RFI. Several methods have been developed to cope with RF-polluted environments, based on flagging, excision, and real-time blanking, among others. All these methods produce some degree of data loss or require assumptions to be made on the astronomical signal. We report the development of a real-time, digital adaptive filter implemented on a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) capable of processing 4096 spectral channels in a 1 GHz of instantaneous ba…
We present the implementation of a spectral kurtosis based Radio Frequency Interference detection system on the CHIME instrument and its reduced-scale pathfinder. Our implementation extends single-receiver formulations to the case of a compact array, combining samples from multiple receivers to improve the confidence with which RFI is detected. Through comparison between on-sky data and simulations, we show that the statistical properties of the canonical spectral kurtosis estimator are functionally unchanged by cross-array integration. Moreover, by comparison of simultaneous data from CHIME a…
In radio astronomy, radio frequency interference (RFI) becomes more and more serious for radio observational facilities. The RFI always influences the search and study of the interesting astronomical objects. Mitigating the RFI becomes an essential procedure in any survey data processing. Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) is an extremely sensitive radio telescope. It is necessary to find out an effective and precise RFI mitigation method for FAST data processing. In this work, we introduce a method to mitigate the RFI in FAST spectral observation and make a statistic…

Radio spectroscopy provides a unique inspection perspective for solar and space weather research, which can reveal the plasma and energetic electron information in the solar corona and inner heliosphere. However, Radio-Frequency Interference (RFI) from human activities affects sensitive radio telescopes, and significantly affects the quality of observation. Thus, RFI detection and mitigation for the observations is necessary to obtain high quality, science-ready data. The flagging of RFI is particularly challenging for the solar and space weather observations at low frequency, because the sola…
Active Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) mitigation becomes a necessity for radio astronomy. The solution commonly applied by the community consists in monitoring the statistics of the received signal, and flag out the detected corrupted data. Subspace projection with array radio telescopes has been suggested as an alternative to data excision to avoid important losses of data and overcome its inherent ineffectiveness with continuous interference. Spatial filtering relies on the estimation of the RFI spatial contribution, and the projection of the subspace spanned by the RFI out of the observ…

In a search for short timescale astrophysical transients in time-domain data, radio-frequency interference (RFI) causes both large quantities of false positive candidates and a significant reduction in sensitivity if not correctly mitigated. Here we propose an algorithm that infers a time-variable frequency channel mask directly from short-duration ($\sim$1 s) data blocks: the method consists of computing a spectral statistic that correlates well with the presence of RFI, and then finding high outliers among the resulting values. For the latter task, we propose an outlier detection algorithm c…
Mitigation of radio frequency interference (RFI) is essential to deliver science-ready radio interferometric data to astronomers. In this paper, using dual polarized radio interferometers, we propose to use the polarization information of post-correlation interference signals to detect and mitigate them. We use the directional statistics of the polarized signals as the detection criteria and formulate a distributed, wideband spectrum sensing problem. Using consensus optimization, we solve this in an online manner, working with mini-batches of data. We present extensive results based on simulat…

We quantify the effect of radio frequency interference (RFI) on measurements of the 21-cm power spectrum during the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). Specifically, we investigate how the frequency structure of RFI source emission generates contamination in higher-order wave modes that is much more problematic than smooth-spectrum foreground sources. Using a relatively optimistic EoR model, we find that even a single relatively dim RFI source can overwhelm the EoR power spectrum signal of $\sim10\text{ mK}^2$ for modes $0.1 \text{ }h\text{ Mpc}^{-1} < k < 2 \text{ }h\text{ Mpc}^{-1}$. If total appar…
We explore how chromatic RFI flags affect 21-cm power spectrum measurements. We particularly study flags that are coarser than the analysis resolution. We find that such RFI flags produce excess power in the EoR window in much the same way as residual RFI. We use Fast Holographic Deconvolution (FHD) simulations to explain this as a result of chromatic disruptions in the interferometric sampling function of the array. We also use these simulations in conjunction with Error Propagated Power Spectrum with InterLeaved Observed Noise ($\varepsilon$ppsilon) to show that without modifying current fla…
The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) attempts to address the possibility of the presence of technological civilizations beyond the Earth. Benefiting from high sensitivity, large sky coverage, an innovative feed cabin for China's Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST), we performed the SETI first observations with FAST's newly commisioned 19-beam receiver; we report preliminary results in this paper. Using the data stream produced by the SERENDIP VI realtime multibeam SETI spectrometer installed at FAST, as well as its off-line data processing pipelines, we …

The project involves the Medicina, Noto, and Sardinia dish antennas and comprised the definition of a coordinated plan for site monitoring as well as the implementation of state-of-the-art hardware and software tools for RFI mitigation. Coordinated monitoring of frequency bands up to 40 GHz has been performed by means of continuous observations and dedicated measurement campaigns with fixed stations and mobil…
We have performed a new search for radio pulsars in archival data of the intermediate and high Galactic latitude parts of the Southern High Time Resolution Universe pulsar survey. This is the first time the entire dataset has been searched for binary pulsars, an achievement enabled by GPU-accelerated dedispersion and periodicity search codes nearly 50 times faster than the previously used pipeline. Candidate selection was handled entirely by a Machine Learning algorithm, allowing for the assessment of 17.6 million candidates in a few person-days. We have also introduced an outlier detection al…
