In this paper, we study a mean curvature type flow with capillary boundary in the unit ball. Our flow preserves the volume of the bounded domain enclosed by the hypersurface, and monotonically decreases an energy functional $E$. We show that it has the longtime existence and subconverges to spherical caps. As an application, we solve an isoperimetric problem for hypersurfaces with capillary boundary.
We study the stability of capillary hypersurfaces in a unit Euclidean ball. It is proved that if the mass center of the generalized body enclosed by the immersed capillary hypersurface and the wetted part of the sphere is located at the origin, then the hypersurface is unstable. An immediate result is that all known examples except the totally geodesic ones and spherical caps are unstable.
In this paper we prove that any immersed stable capillary hypersurfaces in a ball in space forms are totally umbilical. This solves completely a long-standing open problem. In the proof one of crucial ingredients is a new Minkowski type formula. We also prove a Heintze-Karcher-Ros type inequality for hypersurfaces in a ball, which, together with the new Minkowski formula, yields a new proof of Alexandrov's Theorem for embedded CMC hypersurfaces in a ball with free boundary.
In a round ball $B\subset\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ endowed with an $O(n+1)$-invariant metric we consider a radial function that weights volume and area. We prove that a compact two-sided hypersurface in $B$ which is stable capillary in weighted sense and symmetric about some line containing the center of $B$ is homeomorphic to a closed $n$-dimensional disk. When combined with Hsiang symmetrization and other stability results this allows to deduce that the interior boundary of any isoperimetric region in $B$ for the Gaussian weight is a closed $n$-disk of revolution. For $n=2$ we also show that a compa…
We establish a connection between capillary floating in neutral equilibrium and the billiard ball problem. This allows us to reduce the question of floating in neutral equilibrium at any orientation with a prescribed contact angle for infinite homogeneous cylinders to a question about billiard caustics for their orthogonal cross-sections. We solve the billiard problem. As an application, we characterize the possible contact angles and exhibit an infinite family of real analytic non-round cylinders that float in neutral equilibrium at any orientation with constant contact angles.
We generalize a theorem by J. Choe on capillary surfaces for arbitrary 3-dimensional spaces of constant curvature. The main tools in this paper are an extension of a theorem of H. Hopf due to S.-S. Chern and two index lemmas by J. Choe.
In this paper, we study capillary graphs defined on a domain $Ω$ of a complete Riemannian manifold $M$, where a graph is said to be capillary if it has constant mean curvature and locally constant Dirichlet and Neumann conditions on $\partial Ω$. Our main result is a splitting theorem both for $Ω$ and for the graph function on a class of manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature. As a corollary, we classify capillary graphs over domains that are globally Lipschitz epigraphs or slabs in a product space $M = N \times \mathbb{R}$, where $N$ has slow volume growth and non-negative Ricci curvature…
In this paper we investigate the connection between the index and the geometry and topology of capillary surfaces. We prove an index estimate for compact capillary surfaces immersed in general 3-manifolds with boundary. We also study noncompact capillary surfaces with finite index and show that, under suitable curvature assumptions, such surface is conformally equivalent to a compact Riemann surface with boundary, punctured at finitely many points. We then prove that a weakly stable capillary surface immersed in a half-space of $\mathbb{R}^3$ which is minimal or has a contact angle less than o…
We compare the results of our earlier paper on the floating in neutral equilibrium at arbitrary orientation in the sense of Finn-Young with the literature on its counterpart in the sense of Archimedes. We add a few remarks of personal and social-historical character.
In this paper we investigate constant mean curvature surfaces with nonempty boundary in Euclidean space that meet a right cylinder at a constant angle along the boundary. If the surface lies inside of the cylinder, we obtain some results of symmetry by using the Alexandrov reflection method. When the mean curvature is zero, we give sufficient conditions to obtain that the surface is part of a plane or a catenoid.
We propose a notion of stability for capillary hypersurfaces with constant higher order mean curvature and we generalize some results of the classical stability theory for CMC capillary hypersurfaces.

This survey describes some recent rigidity results obtained by the authors for the prescribed mean curvature problem on graphs $u : M \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$. Emphasis is put on minimal, CMC and capillary graphs, as well as on graphical solitons for the mean curvature flow, in warped product ambient spaces. A detailed analysis of the mean curvature operator is given, focusing on maximum principles at infinity, Liouville properties, gradient estimates. Among the geometric applications, we mention the Bernstein theorem for positive entire minimal graphs on manifolds with non-negative Ricci curva…
We study the prescribed mean curvature equation with a prescribed boundary contact angle condition in $M\times\R$ where $M^n$ is a Riemannian submanifold in $\R^{n+1}$. The main purpose is to establish a priori gradient estimates for solutions, from which the long time existence of the solution are derived.
In [3] and [11] the authors showed the existence of a Codazzi pair defined on any constant mean curvature surface in the homogeneous spaces E($κ$,$τ$) associated to the Abresch-Rosenberg differential. In this paper, we use the mentioned Codazzi pair to classify capillary disks in E($κ$,$τ$). As a consequence, the results presented in this paper generalize the previous classification of constant mean curvature disks in the product spaces $\mathbb{S}^2 \times \mathbb{R}$ and $\mathbb{H}^2 \times \mathbb{R}$ in [4] and [5].
We develop a min-max theory for the construction of capillary surfaces in 3-manifolds with smooth boundary. In particular, for a generic set of ambient metrics, we prove the existence of nontrivial, smooth, almost properly embedded surfaces with any given constant mean curvature $c$, and with smooth boundary contacting at any given constant angle $θ$. Moreover, if $c$ is nonzero and $θ$ is not $\fracπ{2}$, then our min-max solution always has multiplicity one. We also establish a stable Bernstein theorem for minimal hypersurfaces with certain contact angles in higher dimensions.
We consider a kind of Yamabe problem whose scalar curvature vanishes in the unit ball $\mathbb{B}^n$ and on the boundary $\mathbb{S}^{n-1}$ the mean curvature is prescribed. By combining critical points at infinity approach with Morse theory we obtain new existence results in higher dimensional case $n\geq 5$, under suitable pinching conditions on the mean curvature function.
This paper focuses on the problem of prescribing mean curvature on the unit ball. Assume that $f$, which is allowed to change sign, satisfies Morse index counting or certain kind of symmetry condition. By using a negative gradient flow method, we then prove that $f$ can be realized as the boundary mean curvature of some conformal metric.
We show that a capillary surface in a solid cone, that is, a surface that has constant mean curvature and the boundary of surface meets the boundary of the cone with a constant angle, is radially graphical if the mean curvature is non-positive with respect to the Gauss map pointing toward the domain bounded by the surface and the boundary of the cone. In the particular case that the cone is circular, we prove that the surface is a spherical cap or a planar disc. The proofs are based on an extension of the Alexandrov reflection method by using inversions about spheres.
