An equivalence is demonstrated, by an explicit first order quantum calculation, between the Minkowski photon emission rate in the inertial frame for an accelerating charge moving on a Rindler trajectory with additional transverse drift motion and the combined Rindler photon emission and absorption rate of the same charge in the Rindler frame in the presence of the Davies Unruh thermal bath. The equivalence also extends, for the Bremsstrahlung emitted by the same charge as calculated using the machinery of classical electrodynamics. The equivalence is shown to also hold for the case of accelerating charges moving on a Rindler trajectory with additional arbitrary transverse motion. Our results generalise those of Higuchi et. al. (1992) and of Cozzella et. al. (2017) for accelerated trajectories with circular transverse motion. Related issues and experimental implications are discussed.
The interplay between acceleration and radiation harbors remarkable and surprising consequences. One of the most striking is that the Larmor radiation emitted by a charge can be seen as a consequence of the Unruh thermal bath. Indeed, this connection between the Unruh effect and classical bremsstrahlung was used recently to propose an experiment to confirm (as directly as possible) the existence of the Unruh thermal bath. This situation may sound puzzling in two ways: first, because the Unruh effect is a strictly quantum effect while Larmor radiation is a classical one, and second, because of …
One of the most fascinating aspects of quantum fields in curved spacetime is the Unruh effect. The direct experimental detection of Unruh temperature has remained an elusive challenge up to now. Gradient optical waveguides manipulating the dispersion of photons are assumed to realize the great acceleration of effective particles, leading to a high effective Unruh temperature. However, experimentally achieving this optical waveguide has not yet been reported. In this work, we exploit a tapered fiber to simulate the accelerated motion of effective particles and obtain an effective Unruh temperat…
Within the context of quantum field theory in curved spacetimes, Hacyan and Sarmiento defined the vacuum stress-energy tensor with respect to the accelerated observer. They calculated it for uniform acceleration and circular motion, and derived that the rotating observer perceives a flux. Mane related the flux to synchrotron radiation. In order to investigate the relation between the vacuum stress and bremsstrahlung, we estimate the stress-energy tensor of the electromagnetic field generated by a point charge, at the position of the charge. We use the retarded field as a self-field of the poin…
Zero-point fluctuations are a universal consequence of quantum theory. Vacuum fluctuations of electromagnetic field have provided crucial evidence and guidance for QED as a successful quantum field theory with a defining gauge symmetry through the Lamb shift, Casimir effect, and spontaneous emission. In an accelerated frame, the thermalisation of the zero-point electromagnetic field gives rise to the Unruh effect linked to the Hawking effect of a black hole via the equivalence principle. This principle is the basis of general covariance, the symmetry of general relativity as the classical theo…
We investigate the Unruh-Fulling effect in a class of nonlocal field theories by examining both the number operator and Unruh-DeWitt detector methods. Unlike in previous literature, we use Unruh quantization to quantize the matter field. Such choice, as oppose to standard Minkowski decomposition, naturally incorporates the time translational invariance in the positive frequency Wightman function and thus captures the thermal equilibrium of the system. We analyze the Unruh-Fulling effect for a massless real scalar field in both the Lorentz noninvariant and Lorentz invariant nonlocal theories. I…
We analyze a generalization of the analogue Unruh effect based on curved graphene. To this end, we consider the fourth order in derivatives field theoretic version of the Pais-Uhlenbeck oscillator, for which the Unruh effect may be interpreted as the creation of two different particles with different masses, corresponding to two Klein-Gordon subsystems. For our model, unlike the standard case, electron chirality on the graphene sheet plays a main role as chirality is essential to distinguish the couple of particles predicted by the Unruh effect associated to the Pais-Uhlenbeck field model.
We aim to build a simple model of a gas with temperature ($T$) in thermal equilibrium with a black-body that plays the role of the adiabatically expanding universe, so that each particle of such a gas mimics a kind of "particle" (quantum) of dark energy, which is inside a very small area of space so-called Planck area ($l_p^{2}$), that is the minimum area of the whole space-time represented by a huge spherical surface with area $4πr_u^2$, $r_u$ being the Hubble radius. So we should realize that such spherical surface is the surface of the black-body for representing the universe, whose tempera…
A great deal of evidence has been mounting over the years showing a deep connection between acceleration, radiation, and the Unruh effect. Indeed, the fact that the Unruh effect can be codified in the Larmor radiation emitted by the charge was used to propose an experiment to experimentally confirm the existence of the Unruh thermal bath. However, such connection has two puzzling issues: (1) how the quantum Unruh effect can be codified in the classical Larmor radiation and (2) the fundamental role played by zero-Rindler-energy modes of the Unruh thermal bath in such a context. Here we generali…
It has been thirty years since the discovery of the Unruh effect. It has played a crucial role in our understanding that the particle content of a field theory is observer dependent. This effect is important in its own right and as a way to understand the phenomenon of particle emission from black holes and cosmological horizons. Here, we review the Unruh effect with particular emphasis to its applications. We also comment on a number of recent developments and discuss some controversies. Effort is also made to clarify what seems to be common misconceptions.
Quantum steering is a perplexing feature at the heart of quantum mechanics that provides profound implications in understanding the nature of physical reality. On the other hand, the effect of relativistic features on quantum systems is vital in understanding the underlying foundations of physics. In this work, we study the effects of Unruh acceleration on the quantum steering of a two-qubit system. In particular, we consider the so-called quantum steering ellipsoid and the maximally-steered coherence in a non-inertial frame and find closed-form analytic expressions for the role of the Unruh a…
Traditionally the physics of the Unruh effect, i.e. the q.f.t. in the wedges $W_R$ or $W_L$ in Minkowski space is related to the physics in the Rindler Fock space, which is a proplematical strategy. In a careful analysis we show that the correct dual q.f.t. lives rather in the thermal Rindler Hilbert space and turns out to be unitarily equivalent to the corresponding Minkowski space theory in contrast to the Rindler Fock space theory. We show in particular that in thermal Rindler Hilbert space a new sort of objects occurs, viz., quasi-particle/hole creation/annihilation operators of thermal Ri…
We study the entanglement of families of Unruh modes in the Bell states $|Φ^\pm\rangle =1/\sqrt{2}(|00\rangle\pm|11\rangle)$ and $|Ψ^\pm\rangle=1/\sqrt{2}(|01\rangle\pm|10\rangle)$ shared by two accelerated observers and find fundamental differences in the robustness of entanglement against acceleration for these states. States $Ψ^\pm$ are entangled for all finite accelerations, whereas, due to the Unruh effect, states $Φ^\pm$ lose their entanglement for finite accelerations. This is true for Bell states of two bosonic modes, as well as for Bell states of a bosonic and a fermionic mode. Furthe…
We investigate the effects of field temperature $T^{(f)}$ on the entanglement harvesting between two uniformly accelerated detectors. For their parallel motion, the thermal nature of fields does not produce any entanglement, and therefore, the outcome is the same as the non-thermal situation. On the contrary, $T^{(f)}$ affects entanglement harvesting when the detectors are in anti-parallel motion, i.e., when detectors $A$ and $B$ are in the right and left Rindler wedges, respectively. While for $T^{(f)}=0$ entanglement harvesting is possible for all values of $A$'s acceleration $a_A$, in the p…
We report the existence of an Unruh like effect, for physical observers (cosmological and comoving observers) in the radiation dominated early universe, which is possible due to the discovery of a new vacuum state (referred here as the $T-$vacuum). Both the comoving and the cosmological observers, who are crucial in our understanding of cosmology, observe this $T-$vacuum as a particle excited state and are able to detect radiation due to particle creation. We draw a robust analogy with the Unruh effect, whereby -- (i) the physical observers here are closely analogous to the accelerated (Rindle…
We study the radiative process of two entangled two-level atoms uniformly accelerated in a thermal bath, coupled to a massless scalar field. First, using the positive frequency Wightman function from the Minkowski modes with a Rindler transformation we provide the transition probabilities for the transitions from maximally entangled symmetric and anti-symmetric Bell states to the collective excited state in $(1+1)$ and $(1+3)$ dimensions. We observe a possible case of \emph{anti-Unruh-like} event in these transition probabilities, though the $(1+1)$ and $(1+3)$ dimensional results are not comp…
We derive a master equation for the reduced density matrix of a uniformly accelerating quantum detector in arbitrary dimensions, generically coupled to a field initially in its vacuum state, and analyze its late time regime. We find that such density matrix asymptotically reaches a Gibbs state. The particularities of its evolution towards this state are encoded in the response function, which depends on the dimension, the properties of the fields, and the specific coupling to them. We also compare this situation with the thermalization of a static detector immersed in a thermal field state, pi…
The discovery of the radiation properties of black holes prompted the search for a natural candidate quantum ground state for a massless scalar field theory on Schwarzschild spacetime, here considered in the Eddington-Finkelstein representation. Among the several available proposals in the literature, an important physical role is played by the so-called Unruh state which is supposed to be appropriate to capture the physics of a black hole formed by spherically symmetric collapsing matter. Within this respect, we shall consider a massless Klein-Gordon field and we shall rigorously and globally…
We study the properties of the transition probability and entanglement harvesting phenomenon for circularly accelerated detectors locally interacting with massless scalar fields. The dependence of the transition probability on the parameters associated with the circular motion is first analyzed in detail. By a cross-comparison with the situation of the uniformly accelerated motion, we obtain that the transition probability and the possible thermalization behavior for detectors rotating with an extremely large circular radius are analogous to that for uniformly accelerated detectors, but for a …
We obtain a remarkable semi-analytic expression concerning the role of purely tidal curvature on accelerated probes, revealing some novel insights into the role of absolute vs. tidal acceleration in the response of such probes. The key quantity we evaluate is the relation between geodesic ($τ_{\rm geod}$) and proper time ($τ_{\rm acc}$) intervals between events on the probe trajectory. This is obtained as a covariant power series in curvature using a combination of analytical and numerical tools. A serendipitous observation then reveals that one can $exactly$ sum all terms involving the $purel…
