Binary systems exert a gravitational torque on misaligned discs orbiting them, causing differential precession which may produce disc warping and tearing. While this is well understood for gas-only discs, misaligned cirumbinary discs of gas and dust have not been thoroughly investigated. We perform SPH simulations of misaligned gas and dust discs around binaries to investigate the different evolution of these two components. We choose two different disc aspect ratios: A thin case for which the gas disc always breaks, and a thick one where a smooth warp develops throughout the disc. For each case, we run simulations of five different dust species with different degrees of coupling with the gas component, varying in Stokes number from 0.002 (strongly coupled dust) to 1000 (effectively decoupled dust). We report two new phenomena: First, large dust grains in thick discs pile up at the warp location, forming narrow dust rings, due to a difference in precession between the gas and dust components. These pile ups do not form at gas pressure maxima, and hence are different from conventional dust traps. This effect is most evident for St ~ 10 - 100. Second, thin discs tear and break only in the gas, while dust particles with St > 10 form a dense dust trap due to the steep pressure gradient caused by the break in the gas. We find that dust with St < 0.02 closely follow the gas particles, for both thin and thick discs, with radial drift becoming noticeable only for the largest grains in this range.
Recent observations have shown that circumstellar and circumbinary discs in young stellar binaries are often misaligned with respect to the binary orbital plane. We analyze the tidal truncation of such misaligned discs due to torques applied to the disc at the Lindblad resonances from the tidal forcings of the binary. We consider eccentric binaries with arbitrary binary-disc inclination angles. We determine the dependence of the tidal forcing strengths on the binary parameters and show that they are complicated non-monotonic functions of eccentricity and inclination. We adopt a truncation crit…
In this paper we answer a simple question: can a misaligned circumbinary planet induce Kozai-Lidov cycles on an inner stellar binary? We use known analytic equations to analyse the behaviour of the Kozai-Lidov effect as the outer mass is made small. We demonstrate a significant departure from the traditional symmetry, critical angles and amplitude of the effect. Aside from massive planets on near-polar orbits, circumbinary planetary systems are devoid of Kozai-Lidov cycles. This has positive implications for the existence of highly misaligned circumbinary planets: an observationally unexplored…
Gaseous circumbinary disks (CBDs) that are highly inclined to the binary orbit are commonly observed in nature. These disks harbor particles that can reach large mutual inclinations as a result of nodal precession once the gas disk has dissipated. With n-body simulations that include fragmentation we demonstrate that misaligned disks of particles can be efficient progenitors of interstellar asteroids (ISAs). Collisions that take place between particles with large mutual inclinations have large impact velocities which can result in mass ejection, with a wide range of fragment sizes and ejection…
Although most of the circumbinary planets detected by the Kepler spacecraft are on orbits that are closely aligned with the binary orbital plane, the systems Kepler-413 and Kepler-453 exhibit small misalignments of $\sim 2.5^\circ$. One possibility is that these planets formed in a circumbinary disc whose midplane was inclined relative to the binary orbital plane. Such a configuration is expected to lead to a warped and twisted disc, and our aim is to examine the inclination evolution of planets embedded in these discs. We employed 3D hydrodynamical simulations that examine the disc response t…
Circumbinary gas disks are often observed to be misaligned to the binary orbit suggesting that planet formation may proceed in a misaligned disk. With N-body simulations we consider the formation of circumbinary terrestrial planets from a particle disk that is initially misaligned. We find that if terrestrial planets form in this way, in the absence of gas, they can only form close to coplanar or close to polar to the binary orbit. Planets around a circular binary form coplanar while planets around an eccentric binary can form coplanar or polar depending on the initial disk misalignment and th…
Recent observations have shown that circumbinary discs can be misaligned with respect to the binary orbital plane. The lack of spherical symmetry, together with the non-planar geometry of these systems, causes differential precession which might induce the propagation of warps. While gas dynamics in such environments is well understood, little is known about dusty discs. In this work, we analytically study the problem of dust traps formation in misaligned circumbinary discs. We find that pile-ups may be induced not by pressure maxima, as the usual dust traps, but by a difference in precession r…
The growing catalog of circumbinary planets strengthens the notion that planets form in a diverse range of conditions across the cosmos. Transiting circumbinary planets yield especially important insights and many examples are now known, in broadly coplanar obits with respect to their binary. Studies of circumbinary disks suggest misaligned transiting examples could also plausibly exist, but their existence would exacerbate the already challenging feat of automatic detection. In this work, we synthesize populations of such planets and consider the number of transits per epoch they produce, for…
We present resolved Herschel images of a circumbinary debris disk in the 99 Herculis system. The primary is a late F-type star. The binary orbit is well characterised and we conclude that the disk is misaligned with the binary plane. Two different models can explain the observed structure. The first model is a ring of polar orbits that move in a plane perpendicular to the binary pericenter direction. We favour this interpretation because it includes the effect of secular perturbations and the disk can survive for Gyr timescales. The second model is a misaligned ring. Because there is an ambigu…

We investigate the orbital dynamics of circumbinary planetary systems with two planets around a circular or eccentric orbit binary. The orbits of the two planet are initially circular and coplanar to each other, but misaligned with respect to the binary orbital plane. The binary-planet and planet-planet interactions result in complex planet tilt oscillations. We use analytic models and numerical simulations to explore the effects of various values of the planet semi-major axes, binary eccentricity, and initial inclination. Around a circular orbit binary, secular tilt oscillations are driven by…
We investigate the flow of material from highly misaligned and polar circumbinary discs that feed the formation of circumstellar discs around each binary component. With three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations we consider equal mass binaries with low eccentricity. We also simulate inclined test particles and highly-misaligned circumstellar discs around one binary component for comparison. During Kozai-Lidov (KL) cycles, the circumstellar disc structure is altered through exchanges of disc eccentricity with disc tilt. Highly inclined circumstellar discs and test particles around individual b…
With $n$-body simulations we investigate the stability of tilted circumbinary planetary systems consisting of two nonzero mass planets. The planets are initially in circular orbits that are coplanar to each other, as would be expected if they form in a flat but tilted circumbinary gas disc and decouple from the disc within a time difference that is much less than the disc nodal precession period. We constrain the parameters of stable multiple planet circumbinary systems. Both planet-planet and planet-binary interactions can cause complex planet tilt oscillations which can destabilise the orbit…
A test particle orbit around an eccentric binary has two stationary states in which there is no nodal precession: coplanar and polar. Nodal precession of a misaligned test particle orbit centres on one of these stationary states. A low mass circumbinary disc undergoes the same precession and moves towards one of these states through dissipation within the disc. For a massive particle orbit, the stationary polar alignment occurs at an inclination less than $90^{\circ}$, this is the prograde-polar stationary inclination. A sufficiently high angular momentum particle has an additional higher incl…
Misalignments within protoplanetary discs are now commonly observed, and features such as shadows in scattered light images indicate departure from a co-planar geometry. VLT/SPHERE observations of the disc around HD 143006 show a large-scale asymmetry, and two narrow dark lanes which are indicative of shadowing. ALMA observations also reveal the presence of rings and gaps in the disc, along with a bright arc at large radii. We present new hydrodynamic simulations of HD 143006, and show that a configuration with both a strongly inclined binary and an outer planetary companion is the most plausi…

Context. Dynamical studies suggest that most circumbinary discs (CBDs) should be coplanar. However, some theoretical works show that under certain conditions a CBD can become polar, which means that its rotation vector is orthogonal with respect to the binary orbital plane. Interestingly, very recent observations show that polar CBDs exist in nature (e.g. HD 98800). Aims. We test the predictions of CBD alignment around eccentric binaries based on linear theory. In particular, we compare prograde and retrograde CBD configurations. Then, assuming planets form in these systems, we thoroughly char…
We analyzed the young (2.8-Myr-old) binary system FS Tau A using near-infrared (H-band) high-contrast polarimetry data from Subaru/HiCIAO and sub-millimeter CO (J=2-1) line emission data from ALMA. Both the near-infrared and sub-millimeter observations reveal several clear structures extending to $\sim$240 AU from the stars. Based on these observations at different wavelengths, we report the following discoveries. One arm-like structure detected in the near-infrared band initially extends from the south of the binary with a subsequent turn to the northeast, corresponding to two bar-like struct…
A key discovery of the Kepler mission is of the circumbinary planets known as "Tatooines", which appear to be well aligned with their host stars' orbits. Whether this alignment is due to initially coplanar circumbinary planet-forming discs (i.e. nature), or subsequent alignment of initially misaligned discs by warping the inner disc or torquing the binary (i.e. nurture), is not known. Tests of which scenario dominates may be possible by observing circumbinary Kuiper belt analogues ("debris discs"), which trace the plane of the primordial disc. Here, the 140 au diameter circumbinary debris disc…
A disk around one component of a binary star system with sufficiently high inclination can undergo Kozai-Lidov (KL) oscillations during which the disk inclination and disk eccentricity are exchanged. Previous studies show that without a source of accretion, KL unstable disks exhibit damped oscillations, due to viscous dissipation, that leave the disk stable near or below the critical inclination for KL oscillations. With three-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations we show that a highly misaligned circumbinary disk that flows onto the binary components forms highly inclined circumstellar disks…
We report the discovery of a transiting, Rp = 4.347+/-0.099REarth, circumbinary planet (CBP) orbiting the Kepler K+M Eclipsing Binary (EB) system KIC 12351927 (Kepler-413) every ~66 days on an eccentric orbit with ap = 0.355+/-0.002AU, ep = 0.118+/-0.002. The two stars, with MA = 0.820+/-0.015MSun, RA = 0.776+/-0.009RSun and MB = 0.542+/-0.008MSun, RB = 0.484+/-0.024RSun respectively revolve around each other every 10.11615+/-0.00001 days on a nearly circular (eEB = 0.037+/-0.002) orbit. The orbital plane of the EB is slightly inclined to the line of sight (iEB = 87.33+/-0.06 degrees) while th…
Nearly all young stars are initially surrounded by `protoplanetary' discs of gas and dust, and in the case of single stars at least 30\% of these discs go on to form planets. The process of protoplanetary disc formation can result in initial misalignments, where the disc orbital plane is different to the stellar equator in single star systems, or to the binary orbital plane in systems with two stars. A quirk of the dynamics means that initially misaligned `circumbinary' discs -- those that surround two stars -- are predicted to evolve to one of two possible stable configurations, one where the…
The protoplanetary disk around the GGTau A binary system is so far one of the most studied young circumbinary disk. Observations of the dust continuum emission at sub-mm/mm wavelengths detected a dust ring located between 200AU and 300AU from the center of mass of the system. If the disk and the binary orbit are coplanar, given the observed projected separation of the stars in the binary system, the classical theory of tidal interaction between a binary system and its circumbinary disk predicts a truncation radius which is significantly smaller than the measured inner radius of the mm-sized du…
Circumbinary Planets (CBPs) can be misaligned with their host binary stars. Orbital dynamics, simulations, and recent observations of proto-planetary disks all suggest that the planet can stably orbit in a plane perpendicular to that of an eccentric host binary star (i.e., a polar orbit). No solid claim of detection of such a configuration has been made; the nine systems detected by the transit technique are nearly coplanar, but their discovery is also biased towards that configuration. Here, we develop Eclipse Timing Variations (ETVs) as a method to detect misaligned CBPs. We find that since …
In recent years an increasing number of observational studies have hinted at the presence of warps in protoplanetary discs, however a general comprehensive description of observational diagnostics of warped discs was missing. We performed a series of 3D SPH hydrodynamic simulations and combined them with 3D radiative transfer calculations to study the observability of warps in circumbinary discs, whose plane is misaligned with respect to the orbital plane of the central binary. Our numerical hydrodynamic simulations confirm previous analytical results on the dependence of the warp structure on…
All circumbinary planets currently detected are in orbits that are almost coplanar to the binary orbit. While misaligned circumbinary planets are more difficult to detect, observations of polar aligned circumbinary gas and debris disks around eccentric binaries suggest that polar planet formation may be possible. A polar aligned planet has a stable orbit that is inclined by 90 degrees to the orbital plane of the binary with an angular momentum vector that is aligned to the binary eccentricity vector. With n- body simulations we model polar terrestrial planet formation using hydrodynamic gas di…
Warped accretion discs are expected in many protostellar binary systems. In this paper, we study the long-term evolution of disc warp and precession for discs with dimensionless thickness $H/r$ larger than their viscosity parameter $α$, such that bending waves can propagate and dominate the warp evolution. For small warps, these discs undergo approximately rigid-body precession. We derive analytical expressions for the warp/twist profiles of the disc and the alignment timescale for a variety of models. Applying our results to circumbinary discs, we find that these discs align with the orbital …
Martin & Lubow (2017) found that an initially sufficiently misaligned low mass protoplanetary disc around an eccentric binary undergoes damped nodal oscillations of tilt angle and longitude of ascending node. Dissipation causes evolution towards a stationary state of polar alignment in which the disc lies perpendicular to the binary orbital plane with angular momentum aligned to the eccentricity vector of the binary. We use hydrodynamic simulations and analytic methods to investigate how the mass of the disc affects this process. The simulations suggest that a disc with nonzero mass settles in…
High-mass multiples might form via fragmentation of self-gravitational disks or alternative scenarios such as disk-assisted capture. However, only few observational constraints exist on the architecture and disk structure of high-mass protobinaries and their accretion properties. Here we report the discovery of a close ($57.9\pm0.2$mas=170au) high-mass protobinary, IRAS17216-3801, where our VLTI/GRAVITY+AMBER near-infrared interferometry allows us to image the circumstellar disks around the individual components with 3 milliarcsecond resolution. We estimate the component masses to $\sim20$ and…
We investigate the formation and evolution of misaligned accretion discs around the secondary component of a binary through mass transfer driven by Kozai-Lidov oscillations of the circumprimary disc's eccentricity and inclination. We perform SPH simulations to study the amount of mass transferred to the secondary star as a function of both the disc and binary parameters. For the range of parameters we explore, we find that increasing the disc aspect ratio, viscosity parameter and initial inclination as well as decreasing the binary mass ratio leads to larger amount of mass transfer, up to a ma…
We analyse the evolution of a mildly inclined circumbinary disc that orbits an eccentric orbit binary by means of smoother particle hydrodynamic (SPH) simulations and linear theory. We show that the alignment process of an initially misaligned circumbinary disc around an eccentric orbit binary is significantly different than around a circular orbit binary and involves tilt oscillations. The more eccentric the binary, the larger the tilt oscillations and the longer it takes to damp these oscillations. A circumbinary disc that is only mildly inclined may increase its inclination by a factor of a…
Aims. We investigate the feasibility of planetesimal growth in circumbinary protoplanetary disks around the observed systems Kepler- 16 and Kepler-34 under the gravitational influence of a precessing eccentric gas disk. Methods. We embed the results of our previous hydrodynamical simulations of protoplanetary disks around binaries into an N-body code to perform 3D, high-resolution, inter-particle gravity-enabled simulations of planetesimal growth and dynamics that include the gravitational force imparted by the gas. Results. Including the full, precessing asymmetric gas disk generates high ecc…
Martin & Lubow (2017) showed through simulations that an initially tilted disc around an eccentric binary can evolve to polar alignment in which the disc lies perpendicular to the binary orbital plane. We apply linear theory to show both analytically and numerically that a nearly polar aligned low mass circumbinary disc evolves to polar alignment and determine the alignment timescale. Significant disc evolution towards the polar state around moderately eccentric binaries can occur for typical protostellar disc parameters in less than a typical disc lifetime for binaries with orbital periods of…
Most stars form in binaries and the evolution of their discs remains poorly understood. To shed light on this subject, we carry out 3D ideal MHD simulations with the AMR code FLASH of binary star formation for separations of $10-20\,\mathrm{AU}$. We run a simulation with no initial turbulence (NT), and two with turbulent Mach numbers of $\mathcal{M} = σ_v/c_s = 0.1$ and $0.2$ (T1 and T2) for $5000\,\mathrm{yr}$ after protostar formation. By the end of the simulations the circumbinary discs in NT and T1, if any, have radii of $\lesssim20\,\mathrm{AU}$ with masses $\lesssim0.02\,\mathrm{M}_\odot…
We use three dimensional simulations with coupled hydrodynamics and Monte Carlo radiative transfer to show that shadows cast by the inner disc in broken circumbinary discs move within a confined range of position angles on the outer disc. Over time, shadows appear to rock back and forth in azimuth as the inner disc precesses. The effect occurs because the inner disc precesses around a vector that is not the angular momentum vector of the outer disc. We relate our findings to recent observations of shadows in discs.
We present hydrodynamical simulations to model the accretion flow from a polar circumbinary disc onto a high eccentricity ($e=0.78$) binary star system with near unity mass ratio ($q=0.83$), as a model for binary HD 98800 BaBb. We compare the polar circumbinary disc accretion flow with the previously studied coplanar case. In the coplanar case, the circumbinary disc becomes eccentric and the accretion alternates from being dominant onto one binary member to the other. For the polar disc case involving a highly eccentric binary, we find that the circumbinary disc retains its initially low eccen…
Eccentric gaseous discs are unstable to a parametric instability involving the resonant interaction between inertial-gravity waves and the eccentric mode in the disc. We present 3D global hydrodynamical simulations of inviscid circumbinary discs that form an inner cavity and become eccentric through interaction with the central binary. The parametric instability grows and generates turbulence that transports angular momentum with stress parameter $α\sim 5 \times 10^{-3}$ at distances $\lesssim 7 \;a_{bin} $, where $a_{bin}$ is the binary semi-major axis. Vertical turbulent diffusion occurs at …

We analyze the eccentric response of a low mass coplanar circumbinary disc to secular tidal forcing by a Keplerian eccentric orbit central binary. The disc acquires a forced eccentricity whose magnitude depends on the properties of the binary and disc. The largest eccentricities occur when there is a global apsidal resonance in the disc. The driving frequency by the binary is its apsidal frequency that is equal to zero. A global resonance occurs when the disc properties permit the existence of a zero apsidal frequency free eccentric mode. Resonances occur for different free eccentric modes tha…
Gas and dust in inclined orbits around binaries experience precession induced by the binary gravitational torque. The difference in precession between gas and dust alters the radial drift of weakly coupled dust and leads to density enhancements where the radial drift is minimised. We explore this phenomenon using 3D hydrodynamical simulations to investigate the prominence of these `dust traffic jams' and the evolution of the resulting dust sub-structures at different disc inclinations and binary eccentricities. We then derive evolution equations for the angular momentum of warped dust discs an…
We present a 3D hydrodynamics study of gravitational instabilities (GIs) in a 0.14 M$_{\odot}$ circumbinary protoplanetary disc orbiting a 1 M$_{\odot}$ star and a 0.02 M$_{\odot}$ brown dwarf companion. We examine the thermodynamical state of the disc and determine the strengths of GI-induced density waves, nonaxisymmetric density structures, mass inflow and outflow, and gravitational torques. Results are compared with a parallel simulation of a protoplanetary disc without the brown dwarf binary companion. Simulations are performed using CHYMERA, a radiative 3D hydrodynamics code. The onset o…
How does the cavity size in circumbinary discs depend on disc and binary properties? We investigate by simulating disc cavities carved by binary companions using smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH). We find that a cavity is quickly opened on the dynamical time, while the cavity size is set on the viscous time. In agreement with previous findings, we find long term cavity sizes of 2-5 times the binary semi-major axis, increasing with eccentricity and decreasing with disc aspect ratio. When considering binaries inclined with respect to the disc we find three regimes: i) discs that evolve towar…
Stellar binaries represent a substantial fraction of stellar systems, especially among young stellar objects. Accordingly, binaries play an important role in setting the architecture of a large number of protoplanetary discs. Binaries in coplanar and polar orientations with respect to the circumbinary disc are stable configurations and could induce non-axisymmetric structures in the dust and gas distributions. In this work, we suggest that the structures shown in the central region of the protoplanetary disc HD 169142 are produced by the presence of an inner stellar binary and a circumbinary (…
The Kepler space mission discovered about a dozen planets orbiting around binary stars systems. Most of these circumbinary planets lie near their instability boundaries at about 3 to 5 binary separations. Past attempts to match these final locations through an inward migration process were only successful for the Kepler-16 system. Here, we study 10 circumbinary systems and try to match the final parking locations and orbital parameters of the planets with a disc driven migration scenario. We performed 2D locally isothermal hydrodynamical simulations of circumbinary discs with embedded planets …
